If you are going to go high-end dining, and want presentation more than being completely stuffed with food, this fits the bill. We had a large group for a birthday party, so we worked with the planners in advance. It narrows your choices down but honestly that isn't a bad thing. They were very accommodating, we had a screened off place to the side of the entrance, and our own staff so service was pretty good. Let's just say no one's wine glass stayed empty for long. There is no wifi through the restaurant but you can use the Harvard University guest access if you truly need to check Facebook during the evening. The appetizer portions seemed a little on the small side, but that's because the Jonah Crab salad was magnificent and I wanted more. A lot of flavor in that little salad! I had the top sirloin and it was cooked perfectly, again tons of flavor. The potato puree was a bit on the salty side, but mixing it in with my bites of sirloin helped. The sirloin portion was a decent size, but the potatoes and vegetables were lacking a bit. Dessert was a tort, which I had to give the rest to my husband because it was just a little too rich for me. He was also still hungry, his cheesecake was much smaller sized than my tort. ;-) All in all it was a wonderful dining experience, and more importantly the birthday girl was happy! read more

There's a reason why this place is so huge: A LOT of people like to dine here. There's a sort of glitzy, affluent, and discreetly relaxed vibe in the air. The service is on the verge of being too-attentive but luckily it's not annoying. And the food was my best experience in Boston. For starters: - the potato-encrusted chicken livers with red-onion marmalade and avocado was pretty damn good although the pieces of liver had a breaded texture which was a bit of a negative distraction. - the Maine lobster with pea tendrils and bacon was an infinitely pleasurable experience. Lobster in Boston kicks ass. Entrees: - Char-Grilled Beef Ribeye: an obviously high quality cut of meat adorned with yukon potato salad and beans. You can't lose with this dish. - Pan-seared salmon: Fearing overcooked salmon, I asked for this medium-rare. The first time they brought the salmon, it was slightly above medium-rare, but the waitstaff very graciously and quickly replaced it with a perfectly cooked cut of fresh salmon with mustard and dandelion greens and sprinkled with pecans. This was a nicely done piece of work. The only bad dish I tried was the vanilla creme brulee which was bland. read more

This place is expensive, but as mentioned in other reviews, it seems to get its patronage from a lot of businesspeople whose companies pay for their meals. I've been here a few times, both for business events and for a couple dates. The ambiance is really nice, I'll give you that. The servers are only mediocre - while seemingly attentive, none seem to really love their job, and most seem less friendly than the average person on the street. My biggest issue with this place - perhaps why I don't love it - is the limited (often nonexistent) vegetarian selection. If there were at least the black rice tart (restaurant week menu) on the menu all year long, I would somehow feel more satisfied. At best, this place offers pasta dishes as the "vegetarian" option - but I would appreciate more options, especially something more creative. read more

Why go to Finale, when there are better options right up the street? Capped a late summer night in Cambridge with an embarrassment of chocolate. First warmed up with the necessary cup of dark hot chocolate from Burdick's then headed over to Harvest late enough to sit for only desserts without depriving actual diners. Ordered the chocolate cremeaux on the advice of the waiter. Good call. Firm but smooth tower of dark chocolate matched well with the dabs of vanilla mascarpone (an ice cream substitute for the well-heeled)? Quantity was okay for two. I had very high expectations for Harvest based both on what I had heard and on the prices, but it was not up to par. The food was fine, everything is "quite good" but not excellent, probably 4 stars. What pushed the rating down to 3 was the bizarre service. Our waiter was overbearing, awkward, annoying, and uncomfortable in every way. During the first part of the meal he WOULD NOT stay away for more than 2 minutes, interrupting conversation after conversation, asking about dishes before we had even tried them, taking unused silverware from the table and replacing it with more silverware, etc. Then, when we finally DID need him to bring a sharing plate for a dish, he was nowhere to be found for 15 minutes. I can only really speak for brunch, and I think my review will echo most of the others on here. First off, the food is delicious. The chefs here are very inventive, change the menu fairly often, use lots of fresh, local ingredients, and overall make some damn good food. I had shrimp and grits, some of the best coffee I've ever had, and some delightful tart for dessert. Fantastic brunch. I was pleased. It is a bit pricy, though. Brunch is prix-fixe, $30. You do get a lot of food, and it's high quality, so I don't think $30 is exorbitant. Looking at their dinner menu, though, I think it may be somewhat overpriced. The place is a bit pretentious, too. It's in Harvard Square--arguably, a very cool, relaxed place to hang out, even at the upper scale places around the corner. Had dinner here this weekend and it was a mixed bag. The interior is a fairly enjoyable place to dine, although the benches against the walls are cheap-looking and cheap-feeling. The service was fine but nothing special, and we were given the check before we were done with dessert, which should never happen at a place like this. We ordered mixed drinks off of the menu and they were really good and really interesting. Off to a great start! The dinner menu is somewhat interesting. Apps: the rabbit gelee was good, and the pea ravioli were great. Entrees: the crispy hake was AWESOME (salty broth, gnocchi, and peas--good to the last drop) and the soft-shelled crab was BAD (crabs were OK [dusted in corn meal and fried] but the accompanying cous cous was a DISASTER. Dear Chef, what have you done? Candied ginger? Rhubarb sauce? With sea beans and peas? It was like a college stir-fry made with whatever was in the fridge and whatever came home from the beach. Really--what a waste of the 2009 soft-shell season. We only ordered it for the soft-shells, hoping the rest would surprise us in a good way. Even with low expectations, it surprised us in a bad way. Creme brulee tasted good but was way too heavy, like instant vanilla pudding. Chocolate souffle was awesome. Really rich. Coffee was really good but they really need to leave the little steel coffee pot on the table, a la Bouchee in the Back Bay, especially since our waiter was nowhere to be found for a refill. Overall, having eaten here a few times over the past few years, this place has seemed to go downhill a bit. There was an under-dressed young crowd at the bar having drinks, looking comfortable, which I don't mind, but that seems like a sign that something about the establishment is giving it away that the prices don't match the experience. I guess Harvest's competition has surged recently, which might explain the shots they take with the menu, but they need to replace the vinyl benches, replace that ugly neon window sign, and tighten up the table service just a tad. read more

You get three small pieces and it is quite filling. The Nutella pancakes entree is a bit misleading. The Nutella is actually minimal and between the two pancakes. Overall, this dish is nothing special. The apple caramel tart dessert is delicious and the presentation is creative. The style is very contemporary, with warm, neutral colors and an airy feel. The other diners seemed very Cambridge-esque, kind of pretentious to me. The service was really excellent. I had the Market Green Salad, Seared Atlantic Salmon and Soft Chocolate Cake. The salad was what you expect, nice and light, attractively presented. The Salmon was out of this world delicious - I loved the beets! The potato puree was pink from the beet juice and created a lovely visual. Jen didn't like her pork much though I never tried it. It apparently was tough and flavorless. My chocolate cake was good, very like a molten cake (my favorite) but served cold. I would have preferred it warm. Jen's sorbet was wonderful. Sitting outside on the patio on a lovely day, surrounded by trees, little sparrows looking for breadcrumbs and animated college professors in deep discussion just does it for me. I'm happy here at lunch time. The outdoor space is tranquil and quiet. I often wander over here alone with a book, and it's a welcome treat, like a fabulous mani-pedi or a relaxing massage. Over the years, I have enjoyed various sandwiches, salads and soups, accompanied by some very nice wine. The bread basket is filled with yummy choices for bread eaters. On more than one occasion, I have journeyed from a great distance just to settle in on the patio and enjoy myself as the afternoon rolled away. I am sorry to report that the menu is not too friendly for vegetarians or vegans, but you can work you way around it. And sometimes the service is unbearably slow, inefficient and impersonal, especially at dinner. This restaurant attracts a mature, somewhat refined crowd, and is best at lunch time when you have time to settle in and take advantage of the patio. read more

Went here for summer restaurant week 2010. I generally choose my restaurant week dining locations based on availability, menu, and value (i.e., would I normally be able to get out of there for $33 or less. If the answer is no, the restaurant stays in the hunt). We decided last minute on participating in restaurant week this year and Harvest had a 7pm reservation available and met my value criteria. Entrees on their regular menu are in the $28-35 range, making $33 for 3 courses a good value. Harvest is a little hard to find, tucked away behind clothing stores on Brattle Street. They have a nice back patio that we sat on, which was the highlight of our experience. We snagged the last table out there. Service was good, answering our questions, checking in, but not pressuring us to leave, either. That's particularly nice on restaurant week, when we know they want to turn tables over. The food was all good, though nothing blew us away enough to want to pay regular prices. The two ladies had salmon, which was medium rare-- a negative in one diner's book, and the men had pork loin, which got mixed review. Apetizers, wine pairings, and desert got higher marks, which the corn soup being the big winner. Overall, we had a lovely restaurant week meal at Harvest, but nothing that blew us away. read more

Probably the first day of the year it was possible to eat outside and it was so perfectly timed, since they have a beautiful patio in the back. Harvest is fine, definitely not worth the money considering all of the better dining options in Cambridge. I started off with the asparagus soup, it was good, but nothing amazing. I thought it would be more unique. Then I had the duck breast- it wasn't tender like duck normally is, although the seasoning was delicious. Maybe if they gave me a better knife, the dish would be ok. Jacob got the lamb, ordered medium rare, and it came very well done. For high end dining, I don't think that's acceptable. I'm sure they would have been happy to take it back, but we were with a big group so he just kept the plate. Both entrees do not come with many veggies- the duck was supposed to have fava beans, and there were maybe 4 on my plate. So get a separate veggie side. The desserts were redeeming, and are what give Harvest their 2 stars. The ice cream is unreal- I had the sorbet and it was fabulous! read more

Made a reservation for my husband's birthday dinner after having a great experience the last time we were at Harvest.Good thing we made the reservation as it was a very busy night with the host turning away those without a reservation. The place was extremely busy - a little too full. Disappointed this time, as the menu changed but not for the better. We had the ceviche for an appetizer which was fantastic, however I was underwhelmed by the new entrees on the menu. Had I looked it up online before, we probably would have gone somewhere else. I ordered the scallops - nice size, but not for that price and I was hungry afterwards. Husband ordered the lobster, extremely overpriced for what he received. The waitstaff at the restaurant are fantastic and very attentive even during the peak dinner period. Too bad the food was overpriced. I understand paying for ambiance and service, but I would still like to be able to enjoy my food and not leave hungry. Don't plan on going back. read more

Came here for a nice dinner with a friend and the service and atmosphere is right on par with what you would expect from an expensive retaurant such as this one. And make no mistake. Its pretty expensive. I normally only say that when I dont think the price of the meal matches the taste. First off be prepared for the menu. It insists upon itself. Lots of ingredients you wouldnt normally see together at most restaurants. I would describe the menu like an episode of "Chopped" on the Food Network. If you are into that then you DEFINITELY need to try harvest. If you arent then I would suggest to stay away. One other warning. If you are a drinker DO NOT order ANYTHING with sour mix in it. Its house made and unbareably tart. On a positive note, the mac and cheese was really good and if you like venison you will certainly enjoy it. It was cooked perfectly and seasoned nicely. I have had some of my best meals in the area at Harvest but also a couple of really disappointing ones. So just know that your mileage may vary. First off, I'm really attracted to the space, which feels more traditionally upscale than many of the high-end restaurants in Cambridge. There are cozy seats, linen-covered tables, fresh-cut flowers, and a terrace here, offering a more timeless feel than you find most places. I won't bother going into menu details because it's relatively seasonal, but I think Harvest usually hits its stride at dinner. I've had some wonderful soups, pasta dishes, and meat-based entrees here, as well as an excellent dessert or two. Dinner is pricey, but I think generally aligned with the quality of the experience. On the other hand, I've also had a couple of disappointing lunches. The lamb sandwich and burger are both too bready and lack the right condiment compliments to keep them alive. The egg sandwich is nothing special either. Service has also been mixed. On my most recent visit we had to call the waiter over multiple times, but in general I find it reasonably attentive if not eager. All told, I like Harvest, and think it provides a nice retreat from the loud restaurants of Harvard square, but I never go expecting to be blown away. read more

I greatly enjoyed my dinner at Harvest the other night with my bf. Although I was a bit nervous that the food would be a little too on the traditional side, with not as much a focus on interesting flavors, I was happily surprised by the quality of food. From the meal I had, I would say Harvest definitely deserves a little bit higher than 25 on Zagat (and 3.5 avg here). Perhaps my favorite dish of the night was the Dayboat Scallop Crudo (avocado, blood orange, tangerine, saba). The scallop paired with the tangy citrus and creamy avocado was excellent. It reminded me of something I would be more likely to experience in an innovative sushi place than necessarily a place specializing in New England flavors. I also enjoyed the Rooibos Tea Marinated Duck Breast; the duck was moist and flavorful. I did end up preferring the Snappy's Butter Poached Scituate Lobster -- the lobster was amazing, and bolstered by particularly well prepared spaghetti squash complementing it. read more

I've eaten here twice, and really enjoyed myself both times. This is fancy-pants for me, so take my review with a grain of poor-person salt. The host and waiter were both very gracious and helpful. We split the ceviche appetizer -- there was plenty for two. My husband had (and enjoyed) venison, and I really enjoyed my arctic char. There were freshly cooked artichokes on my plate, which made my day. However, I would really recommend going when they have a prix fix menu, so you can also three courses for a pretty reasonable price. The only caveat I have about this place is if you are a vegetarian, the vegetarian dish they have is really boring. But they are probably upscale enough that they could whip up something else for you. read more

Martini: Our first venture into the Harvest occurred several years ago where we stumbled upon their Blood Orange Martini (the menu lists this libation under a different name). Since that first sip I keep coming back for more whenever I am in the area. How can you not like a mixture of blood orange puree, orange vodka, and Chambord shaken into a cold frothy frenzy, poured into a chilled Martini glass, and then topped with Champagne. Hmmm. Hmmm. Hmmm. These drinking delicacies can be made from your own home, but quality blood-orange puree is hard to come by and the second-rate bottled variety doesn't do the drink justice. You can make your own puree, but you can only find the blood oranges during the winter months. read more

So, Restaurant Week is always sort of a mixed bag, especially at the high end places that tend to under-deliver either in portion or quality--which was exactly the case for my experience at Harvest. I opted for the Vidalia Onion Soup for my appetizer which tasted as though it was running a bit low or watery so quite a bit of cream was added to thicken the consistency. In an area like New England, where a particular cream-based soup reigns supreme, it's pretty clear when such an approach has been employed. For my entree, I didn't fare much better. Though I'm not one to shy away from the red meat, I went with the vegetarian offering on the menu--a black rice tart with roasted root vegetables. I thought the vegetables were some of the best that I'd had in awhile until after a few bites I realized that this was because they were heavily flavored with butter and salt (or seasonings to that affect). Much like popcorn at the movies, a small indulgence is plenty and easily crosses the line to gluttony. While the portion seemed small at first glance, it ended up being more than enough. The wine selection was great and my dessert was good (hard to screw up sorbet though) not to mention our attentive server however, I will not be frequenting Harvest again for Restaurant Week or otherwise. Very disappointed that I wasted the only night I was able to make Restaurant Week reservations on such a poor selection. read more

I will start out by saying that the food (and specialty drinks) were delicious. I got a gin and ginger martini and it was quite possibly one of the best drinks that I've ever had. For an appetizer, I had the beet salad and it had the most amazing restaurant-made herbed ricotta cheese that I have ever encountered. For my main meal, I had the pork cheek (cooked to perfection) and as I was there with other people - we sampled all the desserts and none of them disappointed. Having said that, we made our reservation (for 6 people) and were promptly seated. That's the last time you will see the word "prompt" in this review. Unfortunately, a large party of 60 people were in the main area of the restaurant and the smaller, lesser tables seemed to get lost in the mix. We arrived at 8:30 and didn't leave until 11:45. This was not because we were savoring our food or imbibing on spirits - it was because the service was THAT SLOW. It took them 15 minutes just to come and get our drink order, then 30 minutes for them to come and get our food order...and you can imagine how long it took for them to bring our appetizers, main course, dessert, etc. I'm giving it a high rating of four stars because the manager and our server made sure that our drinks were comp'd as well as our desserts. This was very generous of them and we appreciated them making up for the long wait. read more

This is one of the nicer places for a cosy dinner in Harvard Square, especially if you want to get off the main drags on Mass Ave and JFK Street. We were there on a weekday evening, so it wasn't as crowded as the weekends must be. The ambience was nice and the place felt warm and cosy. I'm glad I'm stumbled upon it, because it's not really on the main street so you've got to be looking for it to find it. The food is excellent - I had a steak as a main, and the soup was great too. They make their own sea salt that is used in their entrees, and it's proudly advertised by the servers, so that turned out to be quite the conversation piece during our dinner. Our server even showed us a local magazine which had some pages featuring their owner, who would drive out to the coast in Maine to collect buckets of sea water that he would then turn into home made salt himself! In terms of taste, I really couldn't tell if the homemade salt was any different from regular salt, but I'll just give them the benefit of doubt! I've only ever sat at the bar here, and it has never disappointed. My wife LOVES the poutine here, and it's tough to argue with here. The gravy is always thick and rich enough that we ask for extra bread to sop it up with when we're done. Their beer list is small but pretty diverse, so no real complaints there either. I'm a sucker for deviled eggs and they do them exceptionally well and the charcuterie plate was on point as well. Cornichons rock. We love it and will definitely be back. read more

I came here for lunch recently. I had the Verrill Farm Pear & Brie Tartine. It was a toasted open faced sandwich with good quality prosciutto and brie. The pear wasn't overwhelmingly sweet, so it went well with the rest of the sandwich. For dessert, I had the Taza Chocolate Crèmeux which was a real treat. I could have done without the brown sugar granola which comes with it, but everything else was wonderful. One of the best desserts I've had in a while. A really nice mixture of chocolate and caramel and mascarpone instead of whipped cream. Based off of food alone, I would have given them four stars, but unfortunately there were multiple issues with them giving us the wrong orders at the wrong time and it created confusion and chaos. So I'm docking them one point for that. read more

It has been many years since I have dined at the Harvest, but that ended when my nephew made reservations for a family celebration of (4) January birthdays. The ambiance and the attentive staff were excellent. Around the table of 10 were echos of, delicious!!! superb!!! excellent!!! regarding the various entrees. Sliding into Barfly mode, when a bar menu is good life is grand! that said I am only reviewing the bar since that is as far as I got. (Try to restrain yourself from commenting on how there appears a trend with this in my reviews) If you can find the place, the Harvest bar environ and menu is as good as it gets for the bar dining experience. The environment is cozy, refined minus the staunch you may expect in the catacombs of Harvard Square. There are a few good beers on tap and a great wine list. The bar menu is so perfectly balanced with something for everyone, all locally raised or at least organic and reasonably priced (lower than I expected for the surroundings). There is also a nifty little nibble menu in case you are not looking to spoil dinner elsewhere but feel your drink going to your head. Go, and cheers. read more

Pros: Delicious Sunday 3-course prix fixe brunch with plenty of variety. Classy and intimate restaurant. Ability to customize three course menu. Cons: Slow(ish) service, some food items don't stack up to descriptions. I went to Harvest for a birthday brunch outing with family. We were seating roughly ten minutes after our 1:30 reservation, which is much better than I've had at Upstairs in the Square, another well-known brunch restaurant in the Square. Harvest offers a delicious three-course prix fixe brunch menu for $35 (appetizer, entree, and dessert) on Sundays. I was happy with the variety, and you also get to choose two appetizers + entree if you want to forgo the dessert option (which I did). I chose the oysters and Gulf coast shrimp for my two appetizers and the bavette steak and eggs for my entree. I loved the steak and eggs-- four people at my table got it and we were all really happy with the dish. The steak was tender and filling, and the mushroom and hashbrown addition to the meal added a nice balance with the eggs. The service was a little slow, especially while we waited for our first course. I was a bit surprised because we didn't order until after 2 pm and the restaurant wasn't super busy at the time. The waitress also forgot our orders a couple of times and had a few mix-ups with some of our dishes, but these errors weren't egregious. It was simply a little more clumsy than I had expected for a restaurant of this quality. Overall, I think Harvest offers an upscale brunch option-- if you're celebrating something special or just want a really nice Sunday treat, I would definitely recommend this restaurant. We had brunch for 9 people on Sunday morning at noon. The weather was bad, which may have kept the crowds down. The fixed price of $35 for three courses was high, but I found what I ordered really very good. Started with some sort of root vegetable soup made with cider and bits of apple. I think one of the 10 best restaurant soups I've ever had. My entre was a lovely piece of roasted salmon on their hash (sweet and gold potatoes and chunks of bacon) and red cabbage. Cooked perfectly, the flavors blending just right. Dessert was a fruit crisp. A generous portion, very sweet but not cloying. Coffee was top rated as well. As far as service goes, I was impressed. We had two or three waiters serving the nine of us, our three courses all came out at the same time so no one was left yearning for another's plate. Water and coffee refills offered.
