We made a reservation on OpenTable for our anniversary. We were greeted upon arrival and brought to our table. The waitress came over and took our order. We asked what side she recommended, she said the mushrooms, so we ordered that with steaks and mussels as the appetizer. Mussels were great. We noticed that everyone had bread but us, so we asked one of the bussers or food runners (it wasn't the waitress because she was MIA). Bread never came, about 10 mins later we asked the waitress after we flagged her down and she brought us 2 pieces of bread. The food was delivered by the food runner and the waitress didn't come over to follow up. We had to again flag the waitress down. We asked for steak sauce, which they don't have. I was shocked by this seeing how they sell 60.00 steaks. The steaks were a little under cooked but we let it be. The mushrooms were awful so we sent them back. Steaks were not great and somewhat dry. Honestly we were highly disappointed with the service and the food. Then on the bill I was charged 12.00 for two diet cokes. 6.00 for one Diet Coke is a lot to begin with considering it was a small glass filled with ice, it was about 3 sips of soda. Our order: Two tasting menus, espresso martini, sparkling wine The Review: This was our first night on the town as a couple and we are both gourmands, so we were really looking forward to Harvest. They were able to make the tasting menu gluten free (this was end of March), so I was delighted by the accommodation. We booked 3 weeks in advance, and my boyfriend put in a (supposed to be a surprise) request for wine as we were seated, but none came. The service was rushed, the plates were almost dropped down in front of us. Now some of the courses were good, and don't get me wrong, the presentation was nice, but at this price point they all should be excellent. The good dishes were: the tuna crudo and the fish. The pork potato pancake dish (looks kind of like a hashbrown) was neither creative nor tasty at all. What really ruined it for us was the dessert. The cheesecake topping was incredibly acidic to the point of burning your tongue. Where the mousse ended, the jam-like purée began. Same acrid pH. Overall, I recommend Harvest for the drinks, maybe apps, and the nice outdoor fireplace. Would unfortunately not recommend the tasting menu. Perhaps they sell the good things à la carte? We decided to return to Harvest. The prix fixe menu was tempting, but at $125 it felt a bit steep. The oysters were outstanding--fresh East Coast quality. However, they weren't described or identified. Only when we ordered a second round did I realize there were two kinds, which I would've liked to know upfront. The scallops were tasty but could have used more crispness. But it was salty, The corn salad served with them was excellent, with a bright citrus dressing. The mashed potatoes were salty The swordfish was very good quality but again salty served over hummus. The filet mignon was excellent. The strawberry shortcake, skip it. Looks strange, tastes ok. Overall, strong flavors and quality ingredients, but more attention to detail in presentation and descriptions would have elevated the experience. read more

I had dinner at Harvest recently for a small family reunion. It's somewhat dim inside, as to be expected with more upscale restaurants. We ordered all our dishes to share with each other as we traditionally eat "family style". We ordered the 1975 Tower and chicken consumé as appetizers. I particularly enjoyed the crab salad. For entrees, we got the ribeye, salmon, swordfish, and duck. They were all enjoyable. The duck was my personal favorite; it was still pink on the inside and juicy. Great space once you find it- entrance is tucked away off Brattle Street. Love the heated patio area - comfortable even in ~35f degree weather. Brunch was good- enjoyed the steak and eggs, crispy panfried salmon over bed of salad (salad was a bit overdressed but the salmon with super crispy skin made up for it), crispy calamari with Thai chili sauce, and fried chicken with corn bread. This restaurant is hidden near Harvard Square. It took a little for us to find it. We had the tasting menu that was $125 a person. The menu seemed promising. The tasting menu is quite filling but I found it a little disappointing. The crudo was not bad, although I found that all of the toppings were a tad overwhelming. The potato cheese "pie" (?) was a little thick. And the ice cream part of the dessert was a bit gritty. We also expected more mushroom in the risotto. Overall the ambiance is a date night vibe, i would recommend trying this restaurant but it was a little pricey for what they were serving. read more

How banal and slightly sweet mashed potatoes and an indecipherable, odd stuffing were along side a lamb chop that tasted good but was half fat and bone. Very disappointing and dare I say mediocre. I frequented the Harvest just after it opened in 1975. It's not the same restaurant at all. Over the years it has changed from innovative fresh local food to a larger hotel like menu and preparation. Very disappointed. When making reservations we were told allergy could be accommodated. It turned there was only one, undesirable choice. One member of our party had steak which came with cheesy toast. The bread was moldy, which the replaced, AFTER we had all finished eating. Can't go wrong with Harvest! I've been here many times and I always find myself coming back. I love coming here during the summer/spring time because they open up the windows to the patio and you can sit outside. -I highly recommend their lobster roll with their homemade chips. -carrot cake: I was kind of expecting a regular piece of carrot cake but this was definitely more exciting and fun to eat. It looked and tasted great. -clam/seafood bake: this was part of restaurant week. Definitely an upscale place where people dress up. I was definitely not dressed for the occasion and yet all staff members were still very kind and attentive. It was pretty packed for a Tuesday night but service was still quick and my food was phenomenal! I got the salmon and it was delicious. I also enjoyed my cocktail. I came here in March but could see that they had a beautiful outdoor space. I will definitely be coming back in the summer to sit outside and enjoy this place again. read more

Lunch was very tasty and definitely worth at $32 for 3 courses. Great service and relaxed upscale environment. * Free cornbread was yummm * Apps: green bean tempura, escalivada. Preferred the green beans, came with a great avocado sauce. * Entrees: shrimp linguini, short rib quesadilla. The shrimp and sauce were good, noodles just average. Skip the quesadilla--little meat and cheese, weird flavor combo with pear. * Desserts: kiwi cheesecake, chocolate mandarin torte. The cheesecake was so light and fresh. Came here on a weeknight for a work dinner and we had a great time - good food, decent service, and nice ambiance. We had a larger party with a reservation and getting seated/situated wasn't an issue at all. Service was on the slower side, but they also were pretty attentive so perhaps there was just a lag due to the number of people in our party. The menu had a good mix of dishes to satisfy any sort of craving, although the portions were pretty small for the price and weren't super high quality. I must say, Harvest is one of my top restaurants in the Cambridge/Boston area. I came here this past week with colleagues who had flown in from the west coast. Once you actually locate Harvest down the little alley it is in, and you get around the somewhat confusing path to the restaurant, it is like a little--or rather, not to small--oasis. We were promptly shown to our table and offered helpful menu explanations from our server, who was very attentive. We shared the asparagus appetizer, and can I just say that I typically don't even like asparagus, but thought it was actually really good here? Maybe I will give this previously disliked vegetable another change. I ordered the lamb chops for my entree, which were cooked perfectly, and essentially were made the way lamb chops should be prepared. They had a very nice pumpkin dessert that had a nice crunch to it. This was really a relaxing dinner and is a great place to go, whether with friends or colleagues. Last evening we went back to what used to be a staple for my wife and I for years, Harvest in Hvd2. They were amazing for years, but seemingly took a downturn some time ago, so we stopped going. I understand they changed things up by hiring an award winning chef and redecorated, and our meal last night on Valentines Day was absolutely amazing. Every bite was savored and the service spot on. My wife and I are black belts in dining out and I have traveled the world for business and eaten at the finest restaurants on the planet, and this experience was one of the best I've ever had. touted by my father as "julia child's favorite restaurant in boston", we came here on a rainy saturday to celebrate my brother's birthday. harvest is tucked away and is a little difficult to find but the interior is very classy and has nice soundproofing on the ceiling so the ambiance is never too noisy, which is good in a busy restaurant. my family is unfortunately difficult to serve (think of 8 italian americans all talking over each other, and changing their orders as they hear what the others have to say!), so the service provided by the staff was excellent to accomodate for their high energy. the food was pretty good - this is new american, so you know i'm not going to give it a high rating, but it was pretty good. i was satisfied with the seafood tower, the greek yogurt parfait, and the fried chicken and cornbread. i snuck some fries and those were yummy. overall a good spot and it was enjoyable for the whole family, but i don't know if julia child was easy to please or if this was a different place back in the day. either way, good - but typical and expensive - new american brunch fare. read more

Dined there this evening with family. Probably the worst meal that we have had during our week-long visit to Boston. The curry mussels were abominable. The chestnut agnolotti was not any better. The person in our party who ordered the rigatoni could barely take two bites. The service was disappointing with the server yelling at me (the host) across the table and trying to rush me into signing the check. While food tasted great, plate presentation could have been better. I brought this up on OpenTable, and management received the critique well and will let the kitchen know. Finally, service was okay. Our cinnamon bun came out cold. When we let one of the waiters know, he said that he'll pop it in the oven, which was tacky to say to a customer... Food was bland, mushy and overall mediocre. The service was inattentive and the server spent more time talking to his friends at the bar than attending to the customers. The ambience was lacking and the area we were sat had crumbs all over the seats. The meal was overpriced for the quality and poor service and we were charged a beverage fee for a soda water and a Coke after already being charged for both drinks. Which seemed very odd. I'm a Chef. While the service and professionalism of the staff deserves 5 stars, I chose 3 stars as there was only one dish that I would reorder (the duck confit). The paté was a generous serving, however it was underspiced/underseasoned. The beets were cooked well, however the presentation was overall unappetizing. The knife cuts on the beets were too irregular, the three green leaves on top were limp and past their prime, and the quinoa was slightly overcooked and overly sticky, lacked the desired light and airy texture, and could have used some color as to not blend into the cheese. The short rib tortellini was very disappointing. The menu should specify that the $28 dish is an appetizer portion, it's an additional $10 for the entree portion. I appreciated the fact that the sauce was defatted, however by the time it got to the table, denaturation had set in and that typical unappetizing plastic-like film had formed on top of the sauce. Make sure the serving plate is very hot to avoid this. The sauce was also incredibly under salted. Additionally, the tortellini were undercooked/almost raw where the pasta folds. Thankfully, the duck saved the evening. The skin was crispy enough, the duck itself was well seasoned and the hoisin sauce was delicious. I found the duck to be slightly tough for a confit but would definitely reorder. The leafy part of the bok choy was very nicely crispy, and the pickled carrots and onions were very good. No cocktails were ordered, the list was underwhelming. read more

A fancy-ish restaurant that had a great petite menu of choices that made it easy to choose what I wanted to eat. I went for the Benedict with smoked salmon that had a light salad on the side and a good portion of potatoes - I was stuffed. The complaints I had was the inconsistency of how cooked the eggs were across the table, as my friends also got the Benedict. I was lucky for my eggs were a great runny yolk, but two of my friends had no run in their yolk since it was cooked longer. I loved the egg muffin though, as I've never had such an easy time cutting apart the Benedict before at any other restaurant - it was so soft and soaked up the hollandaise. I also wish the potatoes were a bit crispier. The service was decent, waited around 15-20 minutes, but I was confused as to why we had bread plates and a butter knife since we weren't given bread. We stopped by for lunch on Friday hoping to take advantage of the Dine-out Boston prix fixe menu; we had reservations for 1:30, and when we arrived it was still quite busy, although definitely beginning to slow down a bit. While we were seated immediately, it was around 20 minutes later before anyone came by our table to offer us water, let alone take our order - and after we ordered, it was over 25 more minutes before we were served our first course. We all ordered the French onion soup to start, which was unfortunately bit of a disappointment (especially after waiting for the better part of an hour). The presentation looked sloppy, and the flavour was not much better either - the broth was so salty to the point of nearly being undrinkable, and the onions where both bland and overcooked. Unsurprisingly, all of our soups were left unfinished. Despite the restaurant slowly emptying out (it was approaching 2:30 by now), our second course took yet another 20 minutes after our bowls were taken away to be served. Two of us ordered the beer-battered hake, and one of my friends had the braised lamb neck. The hake was fantastic and by far the highlight of the entire meal - perfectly fried with a deliciously soft, flavourful interior and a wonderfully crispy batter. The mac and cheese side was disappointing - pasta overcooked and drenched in sauce. We waited a further 15 minutes for our desserts (and at this point, the dining room was literally empty except for our table!), and perhaps we'd have been better off without them. Rhubarb sorbet was surprisingly tasteless - neither naturally sour nor well sweetened - and we couldn't really eat more than a few bites. The carrot cake hit the other extreme - certainly sweet, but nearly sickeningly so. To top off this marathon 3-course lunch (2 hours and counting already), it took us another 15 minutes to get the attention of a server to pay the cheque. Price point was lower than normal already, considering the special Dine-out Boston menu, but for this quality of food and service, definitely much more than I'd consider reasonable. Overall, an extremely disappointing experience (and surprisingly, too, considering the generally positive comments I've heard), and it will be a hard sale for me to return again. read more

We would have given a five star review, but we ordered the mussels with french fries and the french fries were simply dumped on top of the mussels in their sauce so that the french fries were not crispy but soaked in the mussels sauce. The mussels and in their sauce were good, but the french fries should be served separately, as are typically done for other dishes served at this restaurant, and as we have eaten them in Europe. read more

I find it difficult to write this review, because my wife and I absolutely love this restaurant and have enjoyed dozens of fantastic meals here over the years. However, our experience yesterday with the prix fixe Mother's Day brunch for our party of four left a lot to be desired, and has rattled our opinion of this otherwise excellent establishment. Firstly, the service was painfully slow and uncoordinated. * Our table of 4 was promptly seated at 12:45pm. We waited 15 minutes for the server to take our drink orders, and 25 more minutes for the drinks to arrive and for the server to take our food order. We then waited 30 more minutes for the first course to arrive. Over an hour from when we were seated, until the first food hit the table. * We ordered a tray of oysters as an appetizer, which we asked to be served first. It arrived 15 minutes after the first course and only because we asked "where are the oysters?" when the first course arrived (clearly, you lost that part of our order). * We waited long periods between courses, and didn't leave the restaurant until 3:15pm. Two and a half hours for brunch. We weren't in a rush, and it was nice not the be rushed thru the meal, but boy that's a long time. Secondly, and this is very unlike Harvest, but the food was meh at best. Two of us ordered the prime rib, two of us ordered the branzino. All of it was stone cold, overcooked, and dry as sawdust. I'm willing to chalk this up to Mother's Day brunch being an insanely busy day for Harvest, and your strategy of offering a prix fixe menu. But man, the overall experience yesterday was extraordinarily poor and you really let us down. You are damaging your hard-earned reputation as an excellent restaurant, with service like we experienced yesterday. We will come back for regular dinner service, but this will be our first and last time dining with you on Mother's Day. read more

Shortly after we arrived we were told that there was a party outside on the patio who, like us, were already celebrating the birthday of a one-year-old. We were also celebrating the birthday of a 40-year-old. First of all, strawberries advertised for the French Toast, were unavailable and were substituted with blackberries. The food was fine, when we finally received it. Next, we had a significant amount of time to evaluate the ambience because it took close to an hour and a half to receive our meals. We only received attention regarding the delay after we complained to our server. Third, although the server was pleasant, the meal delivery was terrible. The reservation for 8 was made about three weeks prior to the event: so, there was sufficient time for Harvest to staff for our party. The manager apologized and offered to pay for our beverages. Too little, too late. Both of our family birthday celebrations were tainted by Harvest's lack of regard for our service. We will neither return, nor recommend Harvest to anyone. read more

Classic American upscale dining. The lighting and spacing of the tables made it easy to talk to my friend throughout the dinner. The food was good, we came during Dine-Out Boston restaurant week, and they had a good selection. I left feeling very full, but the food felt heavy. I have heard a lot of negativity lately of how quality has dropped here. It been about a year since I've been here and I again had a great meal Rabbit: 4/5. Rabbit was tender and tasty and the sauce was tasty too Boar pinwheel 4/5 while tasty it was not really creative. A sausage and some sweet potatoes. Like I said, it was good, but Harvest is usually a bit more imaginative and playful with flavors Sticky toffee pudding 5/5. So decadent. So much flavor. This is a home run slam dunk. Coffee ice cream with a paper thin wafer on top and delicious toffee sponge cake underneath. Another great experience. Made the mistake of celebrating my birthday at Harvest and was appalled at how rude the staff was. A manager rolled her eyes at me when I asked about purchasing a meal to go for a friend who was home sick with COVID. Totally uncalled for and a manager should never behave this way and no one should have to deal with this on their birthday.
