I was impressed when I found out that there was a place in New England that only sells chicken pot pies, and I had to try it. I thought the chicken pot pies tasted very good and homemade. We took an uncooked pie home and baked it in the oven. I baked it for an hour and a half and the crust still didn't get very golden brown, which is the way I like it. Tried the chicken pot pies because of recommendations here. Not all the impressed. Crust was nice and lots of white meat. But too much goo ( gravy ? ) and very light hand on veggies of carrots and potatoes. Maybe not the local tradition, but I was expecting peas, onions, maybe celery. Tried the apple pie and was completely disappointed. It was dry and full of nutmeg. I made the mistake of taking it to a work function and was completely embarrassed. How disappointing!!! I hadn't been to Harrow's in quite a while and found myself in Reading on Saturday and thought on seeing the store -- now that's an easy dinner. When I served the pie, the only vegetable was carrots and I don't consider potatoes a second vegetable which is what I was told when I inquired and she said, yes there are two vegetables. Actually what I was expecting was peas and carrots. Luckily I purchased a container of squash, but that too, was not very good. It was very very watery. It also seemed like the amount of gravy was lacking and so much salt had been increased. I also made another mistake when I bought some corn bread which my family wouldn't eat because it was so dry (and salty!!). I guess I'll have to get to Ken's Kicking Chicken in Salem because I just checked out their website and they do have two vegetables!! read more

I drove by this place a few times and decided to go in, man, was I a happy man. They would even cook the pie for you if you call ahead of time. This is definitely a pilgrimage spot for chicken pot pie lovers. I kept wanting to go but never knew how easy it was to get to off the highway. I have only been once so far but I will be back. We picked up a medium size one with veggies to heat up at home and it was great! Nice crust, lots of chicken and great gravy. I also got a small frozen one with no veggies and it was still good but not as good as the non-frozen one. I can't imagine eating a larger one with no veggies but to each their own. Just ordered my first chicken pot pie with the potatoes and carrots yesterday. I like how I can get such a convenient meal that you can tell was homemade - without having to make it yourself. The pie was pretty good, could have used a bottom crust and more veggies as other people have mentioned, but tons of tender chicken. The chicken pot pies are good, but at one time they were great. Definitely order a pie that feeds more than you need as serving size recommendations as on the small side. Cranberry sauce is good, very sweet and tart. Rolls are ok. I always get it with vegetables( carrots and potatoes) and make peas at home to add to it. Chicken salad is always great. We just got 2 chicken pot pies here & they were delicious! The chicken was all white meat & very moist. They veggies were diced carrots and potatoes. The crust was delicious too (perfectly golden)! If you want a nice warm home cooked meal, you can call ahead and have a hot pie made for you and waiting! They also have grab and go you can heat when you get home. Thank you Harrow's for not skimping on ingredients or quality! I hate ordering take out, but this I do not consider "take out" - it tastes just like (errr...okay way BETTER than) homemade! read more

Wow! These pie's are fabulous~I mean when they say home made, they mean HOME MADE! I have bought frozen & fresh. (didn't know you could keep the fresh in fridge for up to 3 days) as good as the frozen are, the fresh are that much fresher. They literally have a full course meal for you to purchase. "mashed potatoes, squash, cranberry sauce, rolls & pie" When they say the jumbo feeds 6, it really does. I have a healthy appetite & it's more than plenty for me. Oh, they even sell sides of extra sauce if you want it, although; they give you a lot in the pie. You can choose with or without vege's, I prefer without....I order take out food frequently, & I have to say; this is by far the most delicious & cheapest way to go!!! The pies are good, yes. However, they are not out of this world considering the price you pay. My issue, though, is the customer service and the sanitary conditions. First and foremost, Harrows tends to generally hire teenagers. Now I'm all about helping young kids out when they need jobs, but only when they can act responsible. I've been in there a few times when the people were goofing off, ultimately resulting in rude behavior and bad customer service for myself and the other customers. Also, the place was not the cleanest. It just makes you wonder about the cooking areas. read more

We bought a Harrow's chicken pie tonight for dinner. With potatoes and carrots. Good, quick, friendly service and a reasonable price for the Family sized pie. Crust, gravy, chicken and vegs cooked well and properly according to directions. Crust was tasty. Overall OK but bland. salt and pepper perhaps but no other spices apparent. Nothing green. Reminded me of cracker barrel. Fills you up but not memorable. an easy dinner, body fuel but not something I would seek out. Overall score: Better than supermarket chicken pies but still boring. My husband picked up a Harrow's chicken pie for dinner last night. He got the pie without vegetables (okay, we had a salad!) to cook at home. This used to be a real treat, but no more. When I cut into the pie, it was hard to find any chicken. Really. This pie used to be loaded with meat, but not any more. The gravy was thick with flour and without seasoning. There were 3 of us eating so we bought the 4-6 serving size pie costing about $17 or so. Well, the crust was delicious and there was plenty of gravy in the pie, but where was the chicken? Was at the Tewksbury Harvest Festival and they were giving out samples of this chicken pie. It was amazing! TONS of chicken, flaky, delicious crust, carrots, potatoes, and a wonderful gravy that was complementary to the ingredients and not over-powering of them. You can't beat this place! Call ahead and they will cook your chicken pie and within minutes of getting home, the family can sit down to a homemade and delicious dinner! I called in my first order today for a cooked chicken pie with vegetables, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce for a 5:30 pick up, walked in to a piping hot pie that stayed hot for my 30 minute drive home. The pie crust reminds me of my grandmother's cooking and the sides were a good compliment. This place is simple and seems to stick to what they are obviously good at...making chicken pies! Big fan of Harrows! I've had them at the Phantom Food Festival before, but never went to the store front. Finally tried it out and loved it! The location is easy to reach off the highway. The store is simple -- we usually get the apartment style pie which says 2-3 servings, but we get 4 out of it. I love the chicken. I only wish they would add peas to the pies! Oh and I LOVE the rolls! Haven't tried any of the other sides. read more

Just tried the chicken soup and could not believe how bland the taste. Added salt and pepper and small amount of butter. I believe you chef needs to have his/her taste buds checked out.
