My wife dropped by to pick up a frozen apartment size pie so we could bake it later in the day. The pie was not frozen, it was placed in a box that was too small which squeezed it so that the dough had to be redistributed and there was a scoop of flour just dumped on top! Obviously someone was in a big rush! We have been buying from Harrows for a long time and the worst problem we had before was the potato's not being cooked enough(this is obviously in a baked pie) and the pie crust being under done ( the crust was mushy on the under side)so that it had to be baked some more! Also, there is too much gravy so that when baking the pie it overflows making a mess! More meat, add peas and more attention to baking time! read more

Okay. First off. You either buy the big pie, the day they make it... or... you freeze it for that " I don't feel like cooking tonight" thing. Both work well. So. Let's get down to it. It's a nice ( not great) chicken pie. Large or small. They're the same. The pictures they post I can't add to. It's a chicken pie. The contents are fairly unseasoned. Carrots were hard. The white gravy lacked any flavor. Just there to hold the ingredients together. The crust was, well, a bit heavy and overwhelming. Tip to the owners... lighten up the crust with a new recipe. After many years away, I made my triumphant return like Logan coming back to NYC from Staten Island in the hit series Law and Order. I had to bring some food for Thanksgiving dinner. I bought two dozen rolls and some very delicious and moist cornbread. Not as good as Courtney's cornbread at ye Old Pit Stop back in the day, but very good. And I bought some chicken salad that I have heard everyone raving about for myself. I would not say it is dry. I like my chicken salad with more mayonnaise than chicken because I am a mutant, but the quality of the chicken at Harrows has not declined at all over these many years. I love the chicken here. This stretch of rt 28 is still a great location for buying great produce and great food. If you are a foodie, I suggest you get up here quick. I spent under 40 dollars for all of this food so it is decent value for the food along with fast and friendly service. We love these chicken pies. You have to order ahead if you want a hot pie before I think 3 pm. Pies have no crust on bottom, which I wasn't used to but after trying these a few times I got used to it and actually found that the amount of crust they give is enough for the filling. I didn't like the buns they have. They are sweet rolls and I'm not into those but that's a preference thing. We love this place and have started to come about once a month. Really good. And you can use Phantom Gourmet gift cards here, which can be a bit of a challenge to use at other places. I haven't had a problem using them here at all. read more

I'd bring a fork and start in the car if I could. I'm surprised this place has mixed reviews- all I can really say is if you are not a fan of Harrows...You may not be a fan of chicken pot pie. I get the one with the vegetables (though they are available without). The gravy is fantastic...I would freebase it if I could figure out how. But any "pie" should live up to its filling- and the best thing about this pie is the chicken. You will find no non-descript by-products, fatty pieces, things that crunch, or dark stringy meat here. Pretty good version of a comfort food classic. I get one a couple of times a year. Big chunks of chicken in a thick sauce and a flaky top crust. I love Harrow's chicken pot pies! I could never seem to find a good chicken pot pie, but this place fills the void in my tummy for sure! Just a note though, I've bought the frozen pies from the freezer section of Crosby's Market (seems to be the only local place that carries them) and they really are not as good; just your standard frozen pot pie fare. I think the biggest thing I like about Harrow's chicken pot pies is the fact you can get them with potatoes. I'm not sure when it happened, but most pot pies don't have potatoes anymore. They will have all sorts of other veggies, but not the potato. It makes me sad! To me, chicken pot pie needs to include carrots and potatoes- all other veggies can vary but those are the two main filler staples. In case you don't like potatoes (or other veggies), Harrow's offers a meat-only pie. And, you can buy a side order of home-made mashed potatoes! The pricing is great. We always buy the family sized pie, and it is huge. Even the smaller pies are a lot of food for what you pay. I've been to other stores that charge significantly more for smaller pies. And, it's not all crust. There is a ton of chicken and veggies in each pie. The service is great as they have several girls working the counter. I've never had to wait more than a minute before being helped. Plenty of room to wait as it's not a cramped area at all. All in all, I am a huge fan of Harrow's! I've had the blueberry pie, and it was great, but the main reason to go there is for the chicken pot pie. You will not be disappointed! Great taste, great price! read more

As of this review, I think I'm the first disappointed customer at Harrow's. I've seen their ads on Phantom Gourmet and just happened to be showing a property nearby that I couldn't refuse to stop by and pick up one their pot pies. I bought one of the massive ones assuming that it would be so good that my wife and I wouldn't be able to stop ourselves from eating it either right away or for breakfast, lunch, and dinner in a matter of a day or two. That's right, if it's just the chicken and the flaky crust you adore, you can order a plain chicken pie. They even heat it up for you if you so desire. Whoa. You can also order Jumbo sized pies that they say feeds 6, but I just ate this with 4 others tonight (and I'm a good eater, let me tell you) and we have about 3 servings leftover. Anyway, take this stuff away and pop it in the oven. You'll be in hot, bubbly, flaky, tender, pot pie heaven in 35 to 45 minutes. My only issue about the pie is the lack of pearl onions and peas. I just had a frozen Harrows pot pie purchased from Johnny's foodmaster in Brookline. It was supposed to take about 60 minutes to cook, well it took well over that to try to get the crust to even look as if it was done. ( mind you I have no problems cooking or with my oven) There was hardly any chicken in there. It was almost disgusting. It's going in the trash! HARROWS is definately the best chicken pot pie that I have ever had. Tastes like home. Pies can be purchased cold to heat up at home, or call ahead and they will have a hot one waiting for you. The pies are fresh, never frozen, and come in four sizes. It's comfort food at a comforting price. The pies are full of chunky big pieces of pulled apart chicken, vegetables and a delicious crust. Make sure to get a dozen of their soft dinner rolls...yum...perfect for sopping up some of the sauce. They used to make other pies too...I haven't had a lemon meringue pie that compares..I wish they would bring them back!! read more

We do wish they could throw another vegetable in, like corn or peas... but we can always add our own if we want it that bad!
