Wish I knew this place existed sooner! Everything we had was very good, including the lattes. I had a chocoweggli and the spinach and cheese croissant (next time I would get it warmed) but both were delicious. My husband had a pretzel stick and a raspberry berliner and enjoyed both, the raspberry jam filling was really fresh tasting. That was a pretty disappointing pretzel. Much more like a ballpark pretzel than what one might find in the German-speaking world.

This is the best find ever! What a fun treat it is to get to check out this bakery. They have awesome coffee, tasty fresh sandwiches for lunch and same for breakfast. The chocolate berliner stole the show this AM. I can't wait to go back and try more! Staff was super pleasant too. Can't wait for them to have more merch because I would def buy. read more

I stumbled upon this bakery at the farmers market outside of South Station in Boston - held every Tuesday and Thursday. I hadn't intended to purchase anything but was intregued because how often do you get to purchase Swiss baked goods in Boston? I'm recently from Wisconsin - home of New Glarus (Little Switzerland) and the 100-year old New Glarus Bakery, which I love love love and miss like crazy. So when I ran into Swissbakers at the market, I was thrilled. The gentelman running the stand was super friendly and incredibly helpful. While the prices are a little high, you do get what you pay for - treats that you can't source anywhere else, unless you make them yourselves. I bought some of the Choco Weggli's for the office. They are $1.35 each (reasonable!) and are made fresh daily from wheat flour, water, butter, milk powder, yeast, sea salt, organic sugar and chocolate chips. Like I expected, these rolls were sweet and delicious - not overly sweet with just the right density and smattering of chocolate chips. They also had "Animal Weggli's" for kids that were shaped as cute little animals. (These come without chocolate chips.) I bought the last one for a friend's daughter - it was shaped like a turtle. I wish I had taken a picture! If you're at the market, or in Reading, stop on by and take some of these babies home. You won't regret it! They also have some AMAZER-ING looking pretzels and pretzel rolls - you can bet your bottom dollar I'll be buying some of those next Thursday... read more

Their croissants taste so good. It's buttery, chewy, and flaky. I tried a choco weggli because everybody was talking about it but to be honest it tasted a bit dry to me. So cute! I love this little coffee shop/ bakery. I specifically come here for loaves of bread but always leave with a pastry as well that never disappoint. Service is always friendly. As a side note, you will also find Swissbakers with booths at many of the farmers markets in the area- definitely seen them at Andover and Wilmington Farmers markets. Another cool Boston place. I know this place is a chain, but I've never had it. Located right next to a train station, I was pretty skeptical. Came here early in the morning and it smelled fantastic inside. I am not going to attempt to spell or pronounce these Swiss/French mostly treats, but safe it to say they were all really good. They are really good about having samples and making sure people understand what they have and even throw in free stuff. I am not even a croissant person, but the one they had was awesome. Really great staff, went on and on telling me about their rewards program and gave me a red bag, which apperantly is a really big deal over there. Ask if you want a whole explanation. Probably could use a little better coffee, as that was just ok. Still another 5 stars place. Impressive. read more

Swissbakers was a bit disappointing for me. Based on the reviews here, I went in looking forward to a large selection of phenomenal items. Upon looking around, nothing immediately caught my eye. Ultimately, I decided to try one of the Berliners, which looked like a donut, but was informed are much lighter and healthier for you at only 145 calories each. I also opted for a hot chocolate, because I figured if there was one thing the Swiss known, it's chocolate. The berliner was light and fluffy and filled with a chocolate filling. The hot chocolate was weak. It tasted like there was far too much milk or water in it and not enough chocolate. For $3.75 I wasn't super impressed. read more

Well, I didn't come up to Reading for this but tried their goods at a farmers market in Downtown Crossing on a Wednesday. The man at the table was pretty polite and explained his offerings well. The raspberry beignet ($1.75) was okay, but tasted a little dry. The filling inside was nice though. The almond croissant ($3.00) had a good, crisp croissant exterior and quality almond filling inside. The prices are a bit steep for what you get. It's an okay treat though. I really enjoy their croissants, quiches, and chocolate-dipped cinnamon almond cookies. The space is small and their hours limited, but get in early for some good coffee and a small bite for a European breakfast if you don't mind the train-station, pit-stop feel. They can heat up everything on the spot if you want to stay, or ask for a to-go insulated tote... I received one for spending over a certain amount. I believe I bought a giant "game-day" pretzel for super bowl one year, and their spicy mustard was delicious. On a side note, these guys are often at the cambridge 5k races as a sponsored vendor and gave pretzels out to all the runners for free. Extra points for being a community, team player! A small bakery by the train station. Love love love their chocolate dipped prussien. Similar to Indian cookies called Little Hearts, but no, these prussiens are not little by any chance. Last year, I was caring for a 41 year old patient in hospice who had less than 2-3 weeks to live. Her husband ordered a strawberry whipped cream cake to celebrate their anniversary, along with their children @ the hospice house. Upon cutting into the cake, there were long strands of hair within it. Unbeknownst to the family, I took it upon myself to return the cake to the Swissbakers for a replacement. The owner couldn't have been more cold or condescending to me. He denied that the hairs throughout the cake were from, "His", bakery and would have nothing to do with replacing the cake for this wonderful couple! Needless to say, he was heartless and refused to do nothing for this couple who would be celebrating what we knew would be their final anniversary together. I encourage people to Not support this business! I was shocked and appalled by the owner's reaction. read more

I accidentally bought a loaf of $10 swirly sweet bread at their Dewey Square Farmers Market stand. The price wasn't marked and I was shocked with the vendor handed it to me and said "Nine ninety-five, please." I didn't want to be that jerk who haggles over prices with farmers market vendors, so I handed over my lunch money to the guy and took it back to the office to share. The bread was nice to look at, but I found it dry, heavy, and strangely textured. My coworkers told me it was delicious, but I think they only did so to help me feel better about spending $10 on bread. Maybe swirly sweet bread isn't their forte. But seriously. Ten bucks? I expect $10 bread to be mind-blowing, or else topped with golden fairy dust and with a toy inside. This was neither. read more

When I used to work various Farmers Markets a couple of years back Swissbakers quickly became one of my favorite tables to stop at. The employees were always great, and the treats they'd bring were delish as well. My sister and I have been talking about going to their location in Reading FOREVER and finally made it over. Coming from somebody who lived in Switzerland for 3 months and really got a taste for their culinary treasures- this place really does compare! We started with "small" sandwiches. I chose a pretzel roll for my bread, turkey, fresh mozzarella, dijon mayo, pickles, lettuce and onions. This sounds very ordinary but what made it so great was the fresh homemade pretzel roll, the mini crunchy pickles, and of course the home mayo. It was a great size for only $3.75 especially because we knew we were going to follow up with some treats. I may or may not have raspberry jam addiction... combine that with shortbread and its all over. This place had class Swiss Linzer cookes (cakes?) that were a soft cinnamon, banana like crust with fresh raspberry jam and topped with a heart. They also had the American version which was similar but with a shortbread cookie instead. I am VERY high maintenance with my raspberry delicacies and this was great. Also, we read the ingredients on the back and they use mostly organic ingredients! Cage free eggs, etc. which means a lot to us. We brought my dad home a chocolate raspberry croissant, and 4 extra pretzel rolls which were completely polished off before the end of the day. I definitely consider this place a hidden gem and we will be back :) read more

Where to begin... This is a small bakery with a decent size selection of baked goods. What they do have can range between very good to fantastic. I would highly caution you the reader that this is all baked with a european twist; Very tasty, very balanced, but not over-sensationalized like many American baked foods are so be prepared to enjoy something thats slightly different. The products are delicious, natural and made with simple ingredients. They dont taste nor look like they contain thousands of calories. Bottom line is that you will get a decent selection of delicious and relatively healthy and well prepared baked goods. I would love to see a slightly bigger selection and my American taste buds do prefer a slightly bigger volume of chocolate, but rest assured that what they do carry will leave you quite happy. I will be back many times and I encourage you to try it out! read more

This place is a hidden gem ! Right at the Reading Train Station, cute little spot. Staff was extremely friendly as all three of them behind the counter greeted me at once :) I've heard nothing but great things, and had to stop in. I got 3 filled croissants to go. 2 Chocolate Raspberry 1 Chocolate. They didn't make it through the day, all were gone. Delicious ! Flakey on the outside, sweet on the inside; pretty much party in my mouth. I will def be going back as I want to try the small sandwiches with the pretzel roll - YUM ! read more

Fresh Goods! Yummy Goods! Our first visit proved to be a great one. We ordered some prossiens(sp) that were out of this world. We ate these first and then proceeded to our Sandwiches - on pretzel rolls which were yummy and soft. One of us had the turkey and swiss the other ham straight up (don't ask...) mine was delicious and reports on the ham were also good. Yes the owner was a bit overly friendly but I will take that over the bored and unconcerned alternatives. I found the prices completely reasonable considering everything is fresh. Love this place! For one thing - I love being associated with the "beautiful" women that I was with when we drove up to pick up some bread today. The owner? was awesome and oh so friendly. He said that my car would look great with a swissbakers sticker on the back - so I asked him for two so I could put one on the front AND on the back. (This all transpired before I even got out of the car and walked into the bakery for the very first time in my life!) So I had to go in - and altho I am on the no-carb thing- I had to try their raspberry fluffy thing that was their sampler for today. and it was heavenly! My friend, Heather and her swiss hubbie, Uwe LOVE this place! They swear by it and let me tell you, they aren't one to swear anything. So rest assured, it is the genuine article. So yea, I'll be back when I can - and not only did I get THREE stickers but a genuine swiss chocolate bar that I will HAVE to give to my wonderful hubbie! read more

Holy moly what did I just eat???? Omg so yummy. I am totally blaming my pregnancy on stopping here and eating two pastries for breakfast, but oh well...it was worth it. I had a little chocolate filled donut, which isn't named a donut but rather something else. It's a "lighter donut with less calories." HAHA -- tell a pregnant lady it has less calories and she'll order an extra pastry on the side. In addition to my delicious donut I also order a pastry that was like a chocolate chip scone/bagel/pretzel texture. It has chocolate chips & giant sea salt pieces (yum-o!!). I'm docking a star for their coffee. That is not their specialty, pastries are!! So if you're in the mood for a delicious pastry, grab one here...go up the road for coffee to Starbucks or somewhere else! But this place is awesome. I've been to the Reading Swissbakers about 8 times now. I've always been happy with the pastries, (chocolate weggli, ham and cheese croissants, cookies, etc.) that I've ordered. The pastries are very dense but are somehow not greasy. They have an awesome selection of baked goods that, to me, transcend predictable, boring bakery fare. Being able to try something new each time I stop in is a definite plus. Swissbakers offers some really nice packaged holiday items during the holiday season too. E.g. I got a nice anchor-hocking pyrex cookie jar full of cookies here for a holiday gift that was very nice. I didn't feel like I was "cheaping out" on the recipient by getting them some crappy box of greasy North-end pastries. The customer service has always been awesome here! The first few times I went in the owner personally greeted customers as they entered. Good customer service is rare in the Boston area so Swissbakers' customer service may be misinterpreted by some as "overbearing". The location is VERY small though, so the staff really does need to keep the line of customers moving. (There's no room to stand at the counter gaping at the menu for five minutes.) My tips would be to plan what you want to order before you go in and then take it to go. This is not really an "eat-in" type place although they do offer sandwiches and some other lunch items. Bottom line: It's worth the frustration of the tiny location. The food is well made and interesting, and the staff is eager and helpful. read more

I can't speak to many of their offerings here. I know Swissbakers has soups, sandwiches, egg pies, and a bunch more but all I know about them are their pretzels and their berliners. Both are incredible and I find myself driving a bit out of my way from time to time just to have one of either of them. Totally worth it. If the prices were lower they'd get 4 stars. I've only come across them at the Dewey Sq farmers market but they deliver some of the best (pre-made) sandwiches! $7 is tough to swallow when you have Clover just a few steps away, but it is definitely worth trying. The sandwiches are on pretzel-baguettes and they are soooo good! I had a plain turkey which came with a very generous amount of good quality turkey, tomatoes, lettuce, pickles, and a mayo-dijonaise. It was delicous. I also picked up a "chocolate ganache" beignette, which was not at all worth the $1.75 I paid for it. I've had better doughnuts at dunkins. Also, there was NO CHOCOLATE IN IT! I threw it away after eating half of it because it wasn't worth the calories. Boo. Hiss. Get a sandwich or just pick up some of those awesome pretzel rolls. read more

I first tried their weggli at the farmer's market in Lexington. It was excellent, a nice treat without being overly sugary sweet. Took the edge off the afternoon hunger. When I was in Reading yesterday, I decided to stop by their shop and try something else. It was lunch, so I bought a ham and cheese croissant. It was to die for. Absolutely delicious. Nice and flakey pastry and the ham was of excellent quality, not watery and tasteless. I bought a chocolate berliner for dessert. Again - excellent!! I must say I am glad I do not frequent the REading are too much, or I will gain weight. You can tell the pride and joy this bakery/cafe has for its products and customers. I wish there were more Mom and Pop businesses like this around. If you are in Reading, you must stop by this place. It may be more pricey than Dunks, Mickey D's or BK, but totally worth it!!!! read more

I really like Swissbakers, but I can't give it 5 stars because the price is pretty hefty for breakfast foods. The Berliners are a great alternative to donuts, but at like $1.75 a pop, it's not like I'm going to bring a couple dozen into work. The coffee is pretty good as well, but again, it's like starbucks prices for Dunkin Donuts level coffee. I'll still go here because it's convenient to the commuter rail, but I wish it was a tad easier on the wallet, since the comparable doughnut-and-a-coffee combo at other places will run you a buck or two less. read more

Admittedly, the service can be a bit over the top friendly, bordering on pushy. The couple that owns the place is Swiss, so maybe it's a cultural thing. But the food is fantastic. I love the berliners, croissants and sandwiches. I just wish they were open on Sunday in Reading! read more
