My neighborhood grocery store, this Harris Teeter is there for me when I need it. The hours are great; it's generally clean and organized; the selection is huge; the wine and beer selection is expansive. The produce is fresh and stocked throughout the seasons. Harris Teeter is also a great place to pick up some gifts like a gift basked, oversized bottle of wine, artisan bread or cookies, when you need it. I especially enjoy the fish department, they have all the good stuff at really affordable prices. The meat selection is also on point, with a variety of cuts and portions available. BONUS: There are more often than not samples laid out of fruit, cheese, bread and spread, and even sometimes (SUPER BONUS) sushi. In fact, the to-go sushi is just as good as any restaurants I find it at on a casual weeknight and half the price. The employees are friendly and seem to be enjoying themselves and eachother somewhat while at work, a quality that shines through in the service. Only gripe: in the produce section of the store, there is ALWAYS...always, a huge cart of boxes, sometimes more than one, blocking up the walkways and creating annoying bottlenecks in an already crowded area of the store. Even though this store is about 10-15 minutes further from me than the Columbia Heights Giant, I sometimes come here just because I like it that much more. They have free samples, a great selection of produce and bakery items, and their hot food and olive bars are the best in the neighborhood. I'm giving this place a 4.5, but out of pure happiness, I bumped it to 5 stars on here to bump the rating a bit. I finally got out to the NW District's new grocery store; I'm sure glad I did. If you don't know where it is, you can easily miss it. It's in a funky art deco building between 17th and 16th St. The grocery store isn't huge but has everything you want. It was a MUCH better shopping experience than going to the nasty Safeway in Dupont. First, the place was clean and had a nice layout. The employees were actually polite and helpful, and didn't seem like they wanted to put a gun to their head, or worst to their manager's or to the customers. The shelves were stock and I saw people restocking. There was one item they ran out of that happened to be on sale. The employee ended up letting me get a more expensive, similar item and put a new bar code on it. Harris Teeter knows about customer service. Things I like about this grocery store (a lot in comparison to the Soviet Safeway in Dupont): clean, stocked, free samples everywhere, pleasant employees, produce that actually looked edible, lots of sales and not obscene prices, salad/olive/soup/dessert/hot food bars, sushi chefs in house, made-to-order sandwiches, fresh meat and seafood section (not prepackaged crap), lot of open check-out lines, and not freezing cold in there (Safeway is set at at a temperature like a meat packing factory). If you live in the District and usually frequent Whole Foods and Safeway, definitely check this out by bus (or parking on-site) read more

Harris Teeter was supposed to be our default grocery store because it's within walking distance from our place and it was recommended by a few friends. There are two issues that I have with the place which is the reason for the two star rating. First, the quality of their produce is very low. We've now had completely overripe blackberries, lettuce that browns after two days and once we couldn't find a ripe tomato in the entire produce section. Second, I have to agree with a previous yelper that their seafood section needs some work. I have yet to see any fresh seafood which is confusing since we're not far from the ocean. This place is a slight step up from Safeway in regards to selection. However, we'll stick to Whole Foods and Trader Joe's for now and check back in with HT in a few months. read more

This is my go-to grocery store when I want a nicer selection than Safeway without the prices, crowd, or pretentiousness of Whole Foods. I have always had pleasant interactions with the staff here and I appreciate their selection of food, especially from their bakery. The deli meat selection is expansive, and there are always good sales. Self checkout at a grocery store is always a plus for me and Harris Teeter delivers where the nearby Safeway fails. The pharmacist here is very helpful, and will go out of her way to make sure you understand pricing/available coupon and discount programs. I'm a BIG fan. I can get my organic stuff and my diet coke in the same store - no more making two trips like with Whole Foods! For most things the quality is comparable, and the prices are lower. But, not for everything. The high end cheeses seem to be way, way, way higher than Whole Foods (like 200%). But, HT is very close to my condo and has everything under one roof, so I'll keep going there 90% of the time. One store for diet coke and one store for food is a huge pain, so thanks HT. read more

By default, this is the best grocery store in the neighborhood (AdMo, Woodley, Kalorama). However, it is still a very good grocery store. I worked at a grocery store for four years and am very picky with where I grocery shop. That being said, this Harris Teeter is fantastic. They have a great selection of produce, and feature items in season. They claim to have produce from local farms grown in season, which is awesome if you can't make it to a farmer's market. Full cheese bar, bakery (with lots of fresh breads), deli, meat counter, seafood, etc. The staff is fantastic. There is another grocery store closer to my house that is disgusting with rude employees. However, I have been very impressed with the help at Harris Teeter. I bought some cold meds, and the cashier ended the transaction with a "I hope you feel better". I was hooked. It's amazing how a lot of customer service oriented employees in DC have this "You are bothering me" attitude, but not at this Harris Teeter. Can't comment on prices as I don't know what to compare it to. It's on par with Safeway, pricier than Target (but what isn't?), and maybe slightly more expensive than Trader Joe's? I have been shopping at this Harris Teeter for about a year now and have no complaints. My other local options are Safeway and Giant. I find the Giant to be way too crowded, but Safeway is a good competitor. Parking is free in their garage and there is also street parking. I find that Harris Teeter has great sales (and with your Vic card specials, you do not need to buy two of the item to get the 2 for price which is a big plus). The store is clean and well stocked. The lines are never outrageous. The staff is friendly and courteous. I have no complaints and find that is a generally pleasant shopping experience with the salad bar as an added bonus. read more

I recently had a great experience with catering at Harris Teeter. We placed an order online through their Party to Go site and when I arrived to pick it up, the staff were very friendly and got our order ready to go quickly. Then when I went to check out, the woman manning the self-check-out counter offered to scan my items so I didn't have to remove them all from the cart. I don't mind this place that much. I have noticed the produce will run out of stock if you're shopping late. I shop here frequently because they stock gluten free food and label it with a purple tag so it's easy to spot. I enjoy this because I have no idea what the hell I'm doing in a grocery store. I know this isn't Harris Teeter's fault, but a crossfit gym recently moved in below the produce level. It is very loud and obnoxious on that end. If you're shopping for fresh produce, I'd suggest doing it quick or wear head phones. Other than that the place is pretty good. Staff is very friendly and talkative. As others have said, this is on the 2nd floor. There is no escalator, only stairs and several elevators. Parking is underneath so you need to use the elevator if you drive. There is an excellent hot bar, but the salad bar is closed on weekends and lunch opens at 12:30, at least on Saturdays. If you want the hot bar for lunch don't come before 12:30. They have a breakfast bar until 1:00 on weekends also. There is a made to order sandwich bar, house-made sushi, excellent deli counter and artisan cheese section, and large health and beauty section. There is indoor counter seating, excellent bakery dept, and very good fresh seafood. Somewhat higher end than safeway or giant, but much fewer of them in the DC area, so a nice change of pace to get things you might not find in the larger chains. Very close to the Columbia Heights safeway so if you can't find anything you usually get a safway you can stop there on the way back. Like Pom tea, for example. I've tried and I've tried and I've tried to like this store. Mostly because it is super conveniently close, and also because 80% of the people that work there seem friendly and professional. It's the other 20% that kills it for me. I think I won't be spending another $ at this store. 1. Lazy employees. I usually do my grocery shopping later in the evening. The crowds are gone & its a more convenient time for me. I understand that at the end of the day, I shouldn't expect the same stock as earlier in the day, but I do expect the same level of customer service. When I walk in, invariably there will be 2-3 employees outside smoking (gross, but whatever). Then another 4-5 standing around by the customer service area gossiping and paying no attention whatsoever to customers. Not a single register will be open. When it comes to check out (and mind, I'm doing some serious grocery shopping--a cart full of items--not simply a late night grab & go), I am directed to use the self-check out. Ummmm, no. This is YOUR job, why am I paying your wages to do your job for you? The self-check out is supposed to be convenient for ME, not YOU. Then I'm told that they will scan it for me. Yeah, ok. Except they don't, because they get called away and wander off to whatever little back room they have and never come out again. 2. The self-checkout is excruciating. Those times when I do opt to use the self checkout (because its more convenient for ME), it becomes a giant hassle. There is supposed to be employee at the kiosk to monitor the self-checkout registers to assist with errors (which are constant). They are never there, and when they are there, they wander away constantly! I've stood for 10 minutes at the damn self-checkout waiting for an employee to reset the register just so I can check-out a bottle of diet pepsi. I left. 3. Those few times when I manage to get a staffed checkout register, the employee never assists with bagging the items. When I ask them to do it, they balk. The bagging area is on YOUR SIDE OF THE DAMN COUNTER. Again, why am I expected to do your job for you? If I wanted to bag my own groceries, I'd use the self-checkout. I'd get exactly the same level of customer service as I'm getting from you. Except the machine is more pleasant to talk with. I don't understand why that if this is their level of customer "service", why they don't just do away with all checkout staff and install self-checkouts completely and do away with the middle man/woman. Then they won't have to pay them to not do their own jobs, when the customer can do it instead! 4. The produce is area is never well stocked (no matter what time of day) and it's usually not fresh. When I went today, there were a bunch of empty shelves, yet pallets of un-packed produce sitting next to them. Seriously? 5. Beer/wine selection is limited. The wine selection is slightly better, but the beer selection is terrible. 6. Sometimes the meat I've purchased from there has been a little iffy. The butcher selections are great. But the packaged stuff scares me a little. 7. I've come across refrigerated items that were not refrigerated. I don't know if it was a malfunction or misplacement, but its happened enough times that I avoid certain sections. 8. The layout of the store is confusing, and I often can't find certain items because it's unclear how they categorize things. Anyway, I'm going to try shopping at a few other grocery stores for awhile just to compare customer service. Who knows? Maybe lazy employees are just a thing now. But if by some miracle there's another grocery store where the customer isn't expected to perform the employee's jobs for them, you can find me there. read more

It my "job" to do the food shopping in our household. I get text message what need buy and I go store my way home from work to buy. So, I've been to every food store in area. This is the best yet. The cash register people more the line fast. They are nice, friendly and helpful. Since I do all the food shopping, I can tell you that the prices are better than Safeway or Whole Foods. The produce is always fresh and they have a great variety bake goods. I got delicious cupcakes yesterday for St. Patrick's Day. This is my favorite grocery store in DC, maybe even the world. It's so nice and clean. I used to split my time between the Logan Circle Whole Foods (for produce and fresh food) and the Dupont Safeway (for staples like Pop Secret or Kraft mac and cheese - brands that you can't get at Whole Foods). Now I'm all Teets, all the time. You can find anything you need here, including a decent selection of organic and local items. There is a salad bar and a hot food bar. A deli counter with a sandwich maker and selection of pre-made meals if you want to grab food and go. A bakery, a huge cheese section, a sizable sushi counter, 2 large aisles of wine options, and lots of samples to taste most days. If you are worried about the prices and prefer to hunt for bargains, you can even do it here despite the slightly higher prices; Harris Teeter has good deals with their discount card, and they even send a weekly email opt-in newsletter that notifies you of sale prices on items that you regularly buy. Plus, they occasionally run double coupon promotions. So if your argument is the expense here, there are ways to work around that. The only thing I haven't yet found at the Teets is a man, but I've seen some cute ones strolling the aisles, so I wouldn't even rule it out. read more

We don't have Harris Teeter in California (that I know of), so I wasn't sure what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised by their value items, not just because of cost but the quality. Other name brand items are priced comparably to other markets. The staff here are also super friendly. Not a huge crowd whenever I've gone, which has been at all times of the day. After having shopped here, I won't go to other markets (unless it's Whole Foods or Trader Joe's for specialty items). read more

4.5 stars. This place is so much better than any other options in the neighborhood. Safeway is a joke (pretty much no matter where you go in the U.S., in fact...). Trader Joe's has ridiculous lines. But this place has short lines, fairly good prices (and really good sales if you look for them), and very nice employees. My main complaint has to do with the size of the produce section. They try to squeeze way too much in there, and there seems to always be at least one, and sometimes up to three, employees re-stocking produce with giant carts, making it nearly impossible to walk around the produce area. Harris Teeter is awesome! I've waited so long for a decent grocery store in the neighborhood - Safeway is a dismal, crowded dump. The staff at Teeter are impeccably friendly and there are delicious free samples everywhere. The sushi bar and deli are great. Freshly baked gourmet bread is coming out of the oven all day and they even have someone staffing the bread desk. Compared to the Safeway on Columbia, this grocery store is amazing. Bright, clean, large produce area, etc....some things may be a little more expensive, but they have a good store brand and overall there is a much better selection here. The fresh bread has been delicious and they have a decent amount of organic food, for those of us who find it difficult to make it to Whole Foods or Trader Joe's sans vehicle. As another yelper mentioned, their bath and body area is really lacking- I kind of hope this will improve, since they did just open, but it's extremely small and will have shampoo but not the conditioner, etc. and not many beauty items. Definitely stick with Target or CVS for the toiletry shopping. The layout and design makes going to Harris Teeter a really nice shopping experience, and the quality and overall value make it easy to switch from Safeway/Giant. read more

Since I have to eat and I haven't hit the lottery and can't eat out all the time, and besides, I like to cook, I have to shop for food. Before Harris Teeter opened in Kalorama we would shop at Trader Joe's for wine at a good price and interesting food, then go to the social Safeway in Georgetown for meat and vegetables and other things because it was at the time the best stocked, and last to Whole Foods if there something we needed that we couldn't get at any of these two, and if we missed something, there was always the Columbia Heights Giant in a pinch. That's a lot of back and forth to keep the pantry stocked. But then Harris Teeter opened and it has pretty much become our one stop. It's clean and trendy looking, well stocked with good prices, good to great quality. and it has most everything we usually need. They've a great wine section with a wide range of prices (cheap or go broke, your choice) and the rough equivalent of Trader Joe's Two Buck Chuck, a 3 for $10 brand (Oak Creek) that is a passable everyday wine. Their meat and fish counter is also worth mention. They generally have a few daily specials that are irresistable for the price value and the quality is generally excellent. We're converted. Harris Teeter has us hooked and I know I'd be horrified to total up the value of our purchases since they've opened in Kalorama. read more

This is my default supermarket in DC. I think that it's cleaner, larger, and the staff are friendlier than at Safeway or Giant. They have a big selection. My only complaint is that they often run out of popular produce items on Sunday afternoon/evening. It's never very busy which makes for a very positive shopping experience.
