I'm a fan of Harris Teeter. When we're in DC this is our new go-to location (we had another location go-to when we would stay at Gallaudet). Great selection for beer and other beverages. Grocery and bakery items are usually fully stocked. Often buy birthday cakes or cupcakes here. Fresh and tasty. Overall, the store pricing is reasonable with good sales and loyalty shopper deals. Gets pretty busy but easy to navigate and get in and out. Friendly employees. read more

It ended up landing at 7.9/10, which currently ranks it 15th out of 40 grocery store birds I've currently tried. I was looking for some for a birthday party and they had all flavors and colors. We ended up getting some vanilla ones and they were great! the price was right and they weren't too sweet, which was great because I topped them with lucky charms marshmallows to decorate them. The grocery store is beginning to improve, as I think there is a new manager and although there is security guard checking receipts - these changes are to improve obvious problems that go unnoticed by residents like me. I'm happy to continue to greet staff and have small talk with the wonderful Spanish butcher/ seafood fella I seem to recall his name when I am there... lol. Overall, I enjoy my local grocery store and it's my go to place for meats/ seafood. Sadly, the Pharmacy is a one- star Pharmacy. Pharmacists are slow, don't provide guidance and say they are there only to full fill prescriptions and refills. They don't administer injectables, although they have signs that say they provide Flu / Covid shots. They're not even professional about it. I was told they can provide injectable Rx at this pharmacy as I did call first to make sure on the Rx, and taking time to get this done. If they don't administer like I was told by phone, they should be professional about the miss information and be a professional about recommendations or correcting the error. Not a high standard, proper service and professionalism goes a long way. This is a college degree and higher learning position, right? If you are looking for a little more guidance pharmacist, find them somewhere else because I've had two pharmacists at this location repeat, they don't do more than full-fill Rx and refills. True underachievers - they should have not gotten their degrees, and it reflects HT poorly. I like HT and most staff but am so irritated by the Pharmacy, I'm writing this review and finding a new Pharmacy that will help beyond a paycheck. You might have better luck but for me it was seriously lame professionals too many times. read more

I'm always impressed with their selection even though the store is not very large! I love their produce, fresh bread, and deli/meat counter. And ALL THE CHEESE. I feel like sometimes they have amazing BOGO deals too! I would go elsewhere for beauty items, but otherwise I feel like they have everything our family needs. Also, I usually walk here but was feeling lazy the other day and drove and parked in the garage for the first time. SO CONVENIENT. It also meant I could get some adult beverages since I didn't have to carry them all of the way home in addition to groceries! Every time I come here, which is less and less frequent, I have to spend nearly twenty minutes in the checkout line. I've got frozen seafood here melting because I can't pay for it in time. Employees are often rude, and sale items (when there's actually a sign available - they sometimes go missing) often ring up at full price. Not sure if this is intentional but it sure feels like they're trying to cheat me. Oh and the produce is crap. And I once found some moldy pomegranate seeds for sale that were a month past their sell-by date. It epitomizes the state of this place. read more

GROCERY STORE = ***** but PHARMACY = * The has the best selection and the best employees. Highly recommended. The pharmacy also has a fine and nice staff, but they are HORRIBLE UNDERSTAFFED. The manager needs to hire several people -- at least two, preferably three -- as quickly as possible because the few staffers they do have seem to keep quitting because it's too crazy! I have a recurring prescription for phenobarbital to prevent life-threatening seizures. Because this is a controlled substance, I cannot refill it through the computer system. (Believe me, I've tried.) I must refill it through a pharmacist personally. But because there are so few staffers working at the pharmacy, it is almost impossible to reach a pharmacist over the phone. As a result, I have run out of the pills more than once altogether. Again, this is DANGEROUS. This is a life-threatening situation.  I know hiring is tough right now but that's all the more reason to beef up the pharmacy with more than one staffer. I'm sure this is a life-threatening situation for everyone who depends on their medications being refilled. read more

I don't love you anymore HT!! Not after I was in the self checkout line and the lady in charge gave me attitude. Not once, but twice!! First, she came over and told me that I need to press a "my bag" key to let the register know I have my own bags before I start ringing up my things. Apparently she was getting annoyed that she had to keep resetting the weight where the bags sit, as my canvas bags were setting something off. So why don't they have a sign at each self checkout stating this? Esp. since it is a new law in DC to bring your own bags or pay five cents for each plastic bag. Then, she told me I also had too many items in the self checkout line. WHAT? They do not have a limit posted ANYWHERE. and...I had 10 items! Are you kidding me? I have seen people in this line with huge full grocery carts in this self checkout area as they do not have signs discouraging such. I asked her to call a manager, and she did not. So as I was leaving I spotted a manager who was very helpful when I politely, calmly, and in a low voice, spoke about the situation. The cashier actually came over while I was talking to her manager and yelled at me. "Really?" I said to the manager. "Are you kidding me? Is this the way you allow your employees to treat your customers?" He apologized profusely. Honestly, everyone at this store is amazingly helpful...I was shocked at this situation. I will wait and see how this is handled, to decide if I will go out of my way to shop here again. I used to love the shopping experience here...very laid back...much different than the store I do not like to shop at two blocks from my house in CH. SHAME on you HT!! read more

Now I know where all the hot guys shop! On both my visits I spied more eye candy here than at my usual HT's in the MD 'burbs. Perhaps, I guess that is because I shop on the weekdays in the middle of the day. The place is expansive and it took me a while to get my bearings of the layout. They carry good selections, but like other reviewers mentioned the prices are a bit high. I tend to shop for what is on sale (I get their emails on Wednesdays) and I always use my VIC (not WIC) card! That saves $$. Plus, they are the only store that occasionally doubles coupons with a face value up to $1.98! That means I can get certain items for practically free! Walked in this store and was furious at myself for never coming here before. Why was I spending my time in really crowded grocery stores when I could move freely about a really pleasant, new-ish Harris Teeter? The parking was really easy, too! Well, there's a reason there was nobody here - there's no food at this store. At 7:30 on a Wednesday night, they were out of literally every single item that was on sale (which is the only way to make shopping at Harris Teeter remotely affordable). Additionally, since a large portion of the items at Teeter are on sale every week, that meant that they were out of really basic staples such as non-organic yellow onions. The items they were out of weren't limited to the sale items, of course. The produce prices are horrendous. One red pepper cost 2.79 (sale price!). The meat prices are horrendous and the selection at the meat counter makes no sense (why did they have fresh chicken Italian sausage but no regular Italian sausage?) I encountered one helpful staff member, the assistant manager. He was really helpful when our self-checkout machine didn't work at all, a process that cost us the ten minutes we saved with the easy parking. (I have used Harris Teeter self-checkout hundreds of times, and this machine was just busted). However, the non-managerial staff members were surly and/or just not helpful at all. The person working the bread counter left her station for a large period of time and then acted all incensed when some yuppie kids tried to get bread for themselves. The baguettes were 3.00. If you're rich and don't have a shopping list, this place is probably great. If you aren't trying to throw your money away and actually want specific items, no thanks. read more

I really appreciate Harris and the fab people who work there but this review is to reflect the fact that corporate has not provided their staff with masks, gloves and ample sanitizer. I don't know if they have gotten a bump in pay but given that they don't have basic supplies, I doubt it. This is grossly irresponsible of corporate HT and I won't be going back until they provide for their workers. Grocery store workers are on the front lines, providing a crucial service. They deserve the basic protections they need to do their job AND hazard pay. HT corporate is endangering workers and our community at a time we need to be pulling together and supporting one another. read more

I live on 14th Street and is in walking distance of several markets. However, I needed a major supermarket for specific items. This was my very first and last time ever shopping here. It's EXTREMELY cluttered and it was like going back in time, a few centuries actually. As a black transgender woman, this was the most awkward and uncomfortable experience ever. I literally forgot that I was in DC. There was literally one guy who asked if I needed help, Roger, I believe . He was extremely sweet and very helpful, considering he appeared to not know the store well. However, other than that, not one friendly face or helping hand. It was Roger that suggested I not leave the store without speaking to the store manager named Ed From the moment I walked in, the employees were staring at me like deer staring into headlights. I was reluctant to speak with the manager because by that point I was extremely anxious and eager to get out of that plantation. I even left without getting some items I needed. I ended up speaking with Ed, who too appeared unconcerned and even stated that customers never complained and that the location was one of the higher end ones. What frustrated me the most was when I shared with him that no one asked to assist me, yet, they were staring at me to the point that it made me very uncomfortable. He actually had a nerve to ask why were they doing so as if he was oblivious that he had a 6'2 black transgender woman wearing spandex standing in front of him. Words simply can't explain how terrifying it was attempting to shop. The store is extra small and entirely too cramped with staff who appeared to be from the 1800's . One plus side, the store manager was rather handsome and Roger's attempt to help but hey .....That's what the one star is for read more

I like this place because it is super close to my apartment, it is clean, the employees are very friendly, and its inventory is pretty decent. What I don't like about it: 1. produce is too expensive. I hardly ever buy fruits or veggies here. 2. Prices in general are pretty high here, but meat isn't that badly priced, and milk is pretty reasonable. Nevertheless, I get most of my groceries at TJ's in Foggy Bottom simply because it has much better prices (and better products). read more

Grocery stores are hard to find in DC. I'm giving this one 4 stars because it's in an area that really needs a decent place to buy food. It's an odd location; the corner of the building is vacant and has been for a while, the entrance is kind of hidden, and the whole place is above ground level (the ground level is a parking garage, which is important for some). That said, it's huge, has a good selection with decent produce. Not competing with the farmer's market, but it's better than the other grocery stores. Like any HT, you have to get a free VIC card and buy sale items. If you don't, the prices are very high. If you do, they're competitive. Also, I've never run in to any meaningful line there, even though it seems to have plenty of customers. They do a good job keeping things moving. read more

What's up with the latest trend of security guards in grocery stores? I stopped going to Safeway on Columbia Road because like clockwork, the security guard would follow me around. Now flash forward, Harris Teeter has now seemingly picked up the same tactic. I'm on the last aisle browsing through frozen foods and the security guard WALKS UP RIGHT BEHIND ME. And, says with a nasty tone, "EXCUSE ME!" I didn't even see him and he actually startled me WHILE I WAS SHOPPING! Does your security guard follow white patrons around? Keep your security guard at the front of the store near the registers and entrance where it makes sense. Stop following me (and other people people of color through the aisles). It might be weird to review a grocery store, but three things keep me coming back here over the other grocery stores in the area: 1. The quick check-out/general well-staffed-ness of the place. Whether I come in late at night or during the post-work rush hour, they always have enough cashiers (plus a self-check out lane) to keep things moving. Plus, the cashiers generally know what they are doing/get you through pretty quickly. 2. The pharmacy! It's never crowded so you never have to wait and the pharmaceutical staff is super patient and helpful even if you have complicated insurance/discount cards/etc. The hours are a little more limited than some competitors but it's totally worth it. 3. General food quality/cleanliness/organization. Harris Teeter generally stocks most things I need, even if it's a little specialty, and it's usually pretty easy to find. Yes, it's slightly pricier than Safeway, but the product quality is better and the people who work here make Harris Teeter a really nice place to shop and I really appreciate it! The location of our home is such that there are no grocery stores within a half a mile. Therefore to simplify our grocery shopping, we have tested all the stores within a mile and chosen to frequent the one that will most likely have everything we want at the price we want it. Harris Teeter is that one. Not solely because they have a free parking garage, but it helps! What I love most about Harris Teeter is how friendly the staff is. You cannot pass an employee without them saying hello or asking if you need help. I have always believed that happy employees are the direct result of good management. So kudos Harris Teeter executive staff! This store has large produce, bakery, deli, beer, wine and meat sections and the selection always seems fresh. The floral department is small and I do wish they had a better seafood department however. There are lots of organic choices in both fresh foods and groceries. Regular prices are decent and sale prices are even better. They often have items marked down on clearance as well. The store is large enough that even on busy days it does not feel very crowded and checkout lines move quickly. The store simplifies our shopping as it's a great one stop shopping kind of place. read more

I have a love/ hate relationship with Harris Teeter. I'm going to break it down by departments. PRODUCE: Love: A modest selection of organic produce, some interesting veggies, POM pomegranates, Kennisaw juices, fresh chopped pineapple Hate: Many veggies are more well traveled than I am, coming from Europe and South America. Also not a fan of the generally wilted condition of organic veggies. Fruit selection is lacking. Local produce is rare and disappointing. They keep produce on the shelves long after it's obviously past its prime. CHEESE/DELI: Love: The modest cheese selection has a few satisfying options and the cookie cakes are dangerously good. Hate: The deli is much more like Safeway, with questionable sushi, a scary salad/olive bar, and blah baked goods. MEAT: Love: Homemade andouille sausage- it is awesome. Decent beef, pork, and poultry selection. Hate: Mostly frozen fish, many of the butchers don't seem very educated or passionate about butchery, and it's not always the cleanest looking department... when it should be the most sterile and organized. GENERAL GROCERIES: Love: The consistent sales, the palatable Harris Teeter brand products, and a decent selection of specialty foods (sauces, artisanal pastas, ethnic foods). Prices aren't dirt cheap, but they aren't Whole Foods either. Hate: It's not exactly the nicest grocery options and they could definitely use more local and small production items. Also, you can't buy individual beers. PHARMACY: Love: It's across the street from my house and the manager is a friendly guy. Hate: Everything -E-V-E-R-Y-T-H-I-N-G- else. This is quite possibly the most inefficient, inept, unhelpful pharmacy in the country. Their newest employee is completely sub-par. There's never more than one employee at a time and a line of 3 people can take up to thirty minutes. I cannot stress how much I hate this pharmacy. I have heard the Manager listening to messages -from doctors, containing confidential patient information- ON SPEAKER PHONE! Like, I was standing there listening to other peoples' prescription instructions being called in by doctor's offices. It was so offensive and shocking, I didn't know how to react. And then he offered to call my doctor when I had a problem... and ALSO did it on speaker phone! I had to ask him not to talk about my confidential health information in front of the entire store. Are you kidding me?!? Bottom Line: This pharmacy is terrible and I'd move my prescriptions were I not so lazy. I've been placed on hold for over 10 minutes dozens of times and have finally stormed over to Harris Teeter just so I can speak to someone about why a prescription refill hasn't been completed despite the fact that I requested it days ago. If I could rate the pharmacy alone, it would get 1.5 stars. OVERALL: The grocery store is good and much better than it could be (Giant, Safeway, etc.). Many of the employees are extremely friendly, although my favorite clerk from San Diego seems to have moved on :(. I'd rather have Whole Foods' selection, but not their prices and certainly not their crazy store teeming with people. The pharmacy sucks. Unfortunately, it appears good ones are difficult to find in my area. A semi-recent CVS on Columbia experience led me to come running back to my lesser of two evils: Harris Teeter. read more

First things first: ever been to a Harris Teeter? No? OK - the prices are going to be about 30% higher and the selection is going to be a lot more bourgeoisie. Think one box of dried rigatone pasta, and six different brands of capers. What does that extra 30% get you? Clean floors, stocked shelves, fresh fruits and vegetables, high quality meat (if low on selection sometimes) and helpful staff, which is worth its weight in gold if you ask me. (by "helpful" I mean "helpful by DC standards", which is to say they won't go out their way for you but if they know where a product is they'll point you in the right direction, with perhaps a smidge of attitude. still 1,000x better than the service at Giant). So in summation, I go to Giant and Safeway when I need the basics for cheap: pasta, frozen vegetables, etc. I go to Harris Teeter when I want fresh produce, the hard-to-find Bisquick cheddar biscuit mix that no one else carries, and buy-one-get-one free bags of cheese. One time they had a special of buy 2 microwave pizzas get 3 free. That sealed the deal for me. read more

I never thought I would be addicted to grocery store sushi, but H-T has become a game-changer for my shopping and eating habits these days! Great selections on pretty much everything I want, and very helpful staff, which is generally rare in DC grocery stores IMO. I'm really in love with the wine selection, which includes more than a few bottles and brands I haven't seen outside of Northern California (the prices are much higher, but with shipping it evens out). And this sushi thing? The chefs will answer any questions and even customize a roll for you if you request. Its all reasonably priced, and again, for this service I'll pay a little extra. read more

I went here to try it out, although the Safeway on Corcoran is close to my house, and I have to say, this Harris Teeter has a LOT more stuff, but it's freakin costly! When you walk in, make sure to sign up for their discount card, much like the ones at Safeway and CVS. However, even with the damn card, I paid more here than I would at Safeway. ALSO, um, I asked for paper bags for my stuff because they are easier to carry, and on the way back to my apartment, they BOTH BROKE. I ended up having to take a cab two blocks just to get my food home. I don't know if I'll ever shop here again, just for that reason. The good thing? Oh my god, I have finally found my "poor man's Whole Foods!" That is the thought I had as I worked the aisles looking for everything on sale: Ribeye Steaks $5.99 a pound, Lamb Chops $4.99 a pound, wow, I thought I had fallen into heaven. So I stumbled upon this Harris Teeter's on their first day of business. Between the 2 protesters outside (I never knew that opening a competing business was unconstitutional - have to ask my Con law professor about it, but I'd be protesting too if I were in their place), the people applying for jobs, and the construction workers/corporate guys milling about it was a bit hectic so these are just a few of my first impressions. The bulk of the grocery store is on the second level of the building, so you have to go up stairs or use the elevators (4 or 5, i think). The produce department had very good looking produce, but seemed a bit small. They had a selection of both organic and conventional. A little bit over there was a decent fresh bread and cheese department, a sushi station, and hot lunch and salad bar area. Samples abounded. For the meat-eaters, the department looked pretty good, and they have house-made sausages that I'll be cooking up for dinner. At least half the sausages were chicken, which pleased me. The fish selection also looked good, but it should for the store's first day. As someone constantly disappointed by grocery store fish (ewww!) I'm going to wait awhile before I give them a permanent gold star. The personal products section seemed tiny to me but did have a mix of high end and basic (think Mrs. Meyers next to dial hand soap). Everything else about the store seemed, well, like a grocery store to me. I'm not convinced about the layout. The shape of the building is unconventional for a grocery store and there were a couple of aisles that didn't quite make sense to me (you'll see once you get to the milk/beer section). It's not the usual grocery store layout that's easy to do laps around, as I frequently do. The employees were all very kind and helpful, almost to a fault. But then again, it was their first day and management was hovering. I hope they keep it up. Overall, good experience. Minus 1 star because this is a preliminary review. To sum up my feelings: thank god there's another option in CH than Giant or Safeway. Oh, and for you drivers, there is parking, but please don't regularly drive there. I give 4 stars for H's salad bar. As far as grocery goes, H has almost everything you are looking for at any g-store, but not much bargain though.. I found the prices of most of things (not on sale) are a bit more expensive than others like giant or safeway. But, salad bar is a good deal. You can get fresh berries, a few types of pre-made salad like spinach salad, ceasar salad, and etc.. and some desserts like pudding, cream pie and etc.. and at least 4 kinds of cheese. $1 more ($5.99 per lbs) than giant but you get more options and freshly stocked stuff. Unless you are looking for something unique (you might find at wholefoods?), H's salad bar is a good spot to get your lunch or light dinner. read more

I worked for another local grocery chain for 15 years, both in the store and as a buyer. So, I can be pretty critical of my grocery experience. I've had great anticipation for this store's opening for so long, it almost felt like it would never happen. Let's say I'm seriously underwhelmed with the other options in my neighborhood. The Columbia Heights Giant is huge and carries lots of stuff, and the prices seem to be lower. But their staff are gruff, poorly dressed, and generally not pleasant. Every time I go, staff members on the floor are talking on their cell phones, while supposedly doing their work. My last visit, the cashier never once looked me in the face or spoke to me. Izzy Cohen would close this store immediately if ever he walked into it, no doubt. Safeway on 17th St tries, but their store is so microscopic, it just can't be very pleasant. Whole Foods on P St is very nice, but also pricey. And they don't carry the full breadth of grocery items, and their lines are generally long. Plus, I've often been unable to park when I'm trying to get more groceries than I can carry the several blocks home. Here at Harris Teeter, I found my first couple of visits almost shocking with how openly friendly and helpful the staff were. I've seen that's already changing. They still ask the same "nice" questions about whether I found everything I wanted and if I need help getting bags to my car. But they don't really seem to care now. It's just a script they are forced to repeat. All in all, I'd rather just a friendly greeting and no further questions to this indifference. I've come to hate this place. I'm shocked at how expensive it is and it's not even that nice of a grocery story. I've done some spot comparisons and Whole Foods is definitely cheaper. This is the closest grocery store to me but I will not be shopping here. You'll find me a Whole Foods for much better pricing and better produce. read more
