I really like Harris Teeter (nicknamed by my friend's sister Hairy Teat. Come on, it's funny) probably because it's on the way to my friend's house. Since it's open 24 hours, we've stopped in for late night ice cream runs or grabbing some water and snacks before hitting the clubs in DC. The large extensive grocery store has everything you need for your grocery shopping and a mini Starbucks to give you energy to walk around the huge store. Sometimes, I need a map for the place, but I liked wandering grocery stores so I'm okay with it. Along with groceries, they have a very good beauty/skincare section carrying Alba, Burt's Bees, and Bumble and Bumble products so you don't have to trek all the way to Roots or a salon to pick up little things. Also, one time I was on a hunt for dried procini mushrooms, which is rather specific, but I literally went to 3 grocery stores before I found it at Harris Teeter. Keep in mind, it can get pretty crowded and hectic around 5 or so when people get off work. The best time to shop, in my opinion, is after 9 when no one else is around so you can take your time and you don't have to worry about a crowd. read more

The convenient location makes it worth the extra price, unless you have a long list. All employees are helpful and friendly. They have a good selection of everything. Discounts are available with a VIC card. They do have some organic produce, a deli, bakery, butcher, pharmacy. Online shopping and curbside pick-up. Starbucks. read more

Every store makes mistakes, but knowing how to remedy them makes a big difference to your customers. This is the closest grocery to my house, but I go out of my way to shop somewhere else. I've experienced expired food (twice. Eggs & Creamer), pharmacy delays (several times, over an hour wait time), cart restocking (twice. they literally took my cart of items and started restocking them), and overall poor management (there was never a helpful response in any of these cases). read more

I go to this Harris Teeter frequently because it's so close to where I work, but aside from it's location it doesn't have that much going for it. It's not a bad supermarket but prices on some items can be a rip off (random things like red bell peppers are much pricier than at a store like Giant) and the quality of produce isn't that great. One thing about Harris Teeter that I really like are their sandwiches. You can get a half sub made to order for $3.50 and their quality is usually excellent. Half subs here are a little bigger & more filling than a six-inch from Subway but smaller than one of their footlongs. I think they've really hit the sweet spot for size. read more

I would not shop at harris teeter weekly because the prices are pretty steep compared to shoppers or walmart. But I do have to say that this store is super clean, and almost everyone is super friendly. They offer kids free cookies and balloons, which is awesome to keep them occupied while I shop. Im a coupon shopper and they do super doubles frequently so that's why I come here, I can get out of this store for less than a dollar and have over 65 bucks worth of groceries. Awesome? I live very close to another popular supermarket in Columbia and am generally satisfied by what it has to offer. So I don't usually go to Harris Teeter But the other night I took a trip to this supermarket because it was late and the store stays open 24-hours. Wow, was I impressed. Rather than go on about every individual thing, I'll single out their vegetable section, which is first-rate. Specifically, they're the only local store that sells individual carrots. This might seem an insignificant thing, but it's a godsend for those of us who like to make big salads with just the right amount of each vegetable. It's little things like this that set supermarkets apart, and I'll be shopping here despite having to drive across town. read more

Harris Teeter in Columbia is a hidden gem of a grocery store since there are so many restaurants and fast food joints around every corner. I only know about Harris Teeter because a coworker showed me where it was one day when I needed a quick place to grab food for lunch. The deli is awesome, you can have subs or sushi made fresh right in front of you, trust me it's a heck of a lot better than Subway. A whole sub seems to be longer than any foot long I've seen at Subway and the price is about the same after tax. They have sub specials everyday most week days you can get a special half sub for $3.49 topped with whichever toppings you prefer. I think you just add a dollar for a drink and chips but I'm not entirely sure all I'm sure about is that its a good deal. I haven't had fresh sushi yet, but I'm working my way up to try it. In time it will happen, I enjoy the salad bar and Asian bar, you pick and choose what you want to eat and pay for it per lb. not a bad deal (cheaper than Wegmans and just as good). I've found that Harris Teeter has better prices and the quality of the products are great. I enjoy this grocery store very much it's convenient and I can usually find what I am looking for. read more

Watch out for stale-dated food. It's happened to me at least 6 times that I know of. Enough that I reached out to them via their survey function on their website. I had a response. They indicated "someone from the store will call you to discuss ". Didn't happen. I'm super cautious when I shop there now, and have had to put various produce and store-made deli items back on the shelf. Most recently I got burned again. They sold me their store brand hummus on November 9th with a "use by November 6th" date on it. Not "sell by". "Use by". Yuck. Thankfully Wegmans is close by. I'm done with Harris Teeter. read more

Harris Teeter is my favorite grocery stores,I actually used to work their. At first I was a start bucks lead and then moved over to meat department. I was let go because I had a family emergency and the store dad manager acted like he could care less. All he said is "so are you finish your shift"? He had know compassion for my situation, I told him it was important and I left. My grandmother died 6 days later. I talked to HR and I was told I would be hired back but problaby not the same store which wasn't fair to ethier but I guess that's the way it is. The store manager and me and all the othe employees in the store would agree with me on his behavior, anyways other then the store manager the rest of Harris teeter is amazing all the employees are sweet and want to help you, and that's because of the employees tho not because of management. I know a ton of people who shop at Whole Foods or Wegmans, but honestly I love this Harris Teeter. The service is consistnetly excellent, and in the rare case that an error is made they always fix it. The produce is excellent, and frankly for a "premium" grocery store, the prices are consistnetly less than Safeway or Giant. Specials change weekly and are an excelent way to stock up. read more

This is absolutely my favorite place to shop for groceries. The store is large, well-lit, very clean, and open 24/7! They stock a wide variety of items and have a fantastic deli/sub shop and a great big salad bar. Produce, seafood, bakery, and meat departments are fabulous! The employees are super friendly and helpful and they make shopping here a consistently good experience. The manager and assistant managers go out of their way to provide wonderful customer service. The customer service at this branch is beyond exceptional. I started going here out of convenience but continue to go because of the service. I shop here every week and they are great. I love seeing the usual faces every week and they know they will see me every week as well. The prices are reasonable (not even Walmart has better on food stuff, I checked) and the store is always clean. I freaking love this store. The rundown: - Open 24 hours - Good selection - This one lady bags groceries the way it's supposed to be done, with frozen foods separate from dry goods, heavier foods on the bottom... she even put a plastic bag between my two Promised Land 2% chocolate milk (which I haven't seen anywhere else) bottles to pad them since they're glass. - The deals with the free Very Important Customer card are usually pretty good. What I get when I'm there: Aside from the aforementioned Promised Land chocolate milk, they also carry Rachel's cottage cheese. They have jalapeno pickles and Wickles, and the HT brand peach mango salsa is yummy (especially with TJ's panko crusted tilapia). The downside: There's no cafe/dining area like in Rockville/Bethesda location with. I wish they'd restock more often. read more

HT has a reputation for high prices, which isn't entirely justified. They carry some high-end items, but their house brands balance that out. Most I've tried were quite good (the notable exception was the reduced fat cream cheese - yuk!). They also have really good sales, though you have to have their "loyalty" card to get them. That's SOP for this region, though. They also have a nice atmosphere. The aisles are wide, and not blocked with pop-up displays (take the hint, GIant!). Their music is played at a reasonable volume (looking your way, Weis!). Check-out lines have an odd layout, but move quickly. I leave with what I came for, and usually in a better mood than when I went in. That's more than I can say for any other grocery stores in the area. read more

I LOVE HARRIS TEETER! Even having had lived in NC (home of HT) for 8 years-it wasn't quite like this store. Everyone that I encounter there is nice-consistently, each time that I go (weekly/bi-weekly). They are clean, have a good produce section with regular and organic foods, odd-hard-to-find produce like bok choy, great potato salad, great single-slice cakes, $5 subs on Friday (footlong and have more meat than Subway), a great selection of frozen veggies, yogurts and fresh seafood. They also have so many different breads, it's really almost like a bakery. I will admit the deli egg salad sucks, but they make up for that in so many more areas. I even got a mini ceramic flat iron there for $15 that works great and their clearnace bins in the front by the beauty/pharmacy have tons of deals-folic acid (100 count) for $1.37-GNC can't beat that! They have a RedBox and coin casher box in the store, they are 24 hours for the occasional night owl like myself and the carts are not run down and make tons of noise or have dust bunnies the size of a coyote in the wheels. In terms of pricing, I don't think I'm an uppity type person like some may equate HT shopper to. And though I am big on quality. I'm frugal, but not cheap and figure the more I can save, the more I can buy of what I need and many times of what I want. HT has the E-VIC card that offers online choosing of coupons that you simply scan at the store and you get the coupon. They also have triple coupon days and double coupons most all the time. Compared to Giant, Safeway and Weis (all places that I go in the alternative) ....I honestly get more for my money at HT. I mean I can spend $50 and actually have some fish/meat too :-). At the other places, I migfht spend $50 just to realize I got 1 pack of salmon that's good for 1 lunch and a whole bunch of sides and cereal, but no real substance. I get the whole shabangabang at HT. I wish there were more in the area, but even when I move further down into PG/MoCO, I will still travel here for my fridge-stocking. read more

I really like coming here... The employees are respectful (although I've never met the scary produce manager as mentioned in other reviews). The store is very clean and they have a huge assortment of items -- more so than Wegmans in some ways. I love the boars head produce, the wide array of vegetables, and the fresh baked breads that they slice for you. Little things like these can really make a grocer stand out. I did notice today that Some of the items can be close to expiration date. Keep an eye on that. Lastly, be sure to utilize the excellent deals that they offer. Lots of buy one, get one deals and 10 for $10 goods. The "ht" brand is great too!!! It's always cheaper than the alternatives. read more

I've worked with the HT manager and employees over several years for fulfilling some special large purchases. They have always worked hard to meet our needs and have gone out of their way to get our items on time and always with a smile. This store has the very best customer service attitude I've ever experienced in a retail outlet. My review is not for the grocery store, but for the ready-to-eat food. There is a salad bar, a hot asian food bar, sushi, as well as a deli counter. Though I have not ordered at the counter I have tried both the hot bar and the salad bar. The salad bar is one of the better ones in the area. The items are very fresh and there is a diverse selection of veggies. Additionally, there is a daily special salad i.e. strawberry spinach salad, moroccan salad, etc. The hot bar is also decent. I have only gotten the chow mein, but it was seasoned well and not too greasy. I would say the pricing is in line with other grocery store salad bars - I believe it is 5.99/pound for the cold bar, and 6.99 for the hot. Definitely cheaper than Whole Foods, but comparable quality and selection. read more

I was very excited to move nearby this Harris Teeter. It does have a friendly staff, and is very bright and clean. My one big complaint is the produce. This is one of my biggest purchases at a grocery store and I've been very disappointed. Very very nice. Huge, brightly lit, gorgeous produce, great pre-made options - which I actually don't generally pay any attention to, but their items look great. Very impressed with the fish counter. The prices are perhaps a little high, but I don't care. There's no comparison between the shopping experience here vs. Giant. I hate that place. I cook a lot, and search out unique items and recipes, so a place like this is like a play ground for me. The cheese selection is awesome, but is wicked expensive, though, so maybe go to Trader Joes for cheese. read more

Update: I've been to this Harris Teeter on a weekly basis since it opened, doing the family shop and spending about $150-$200 each time. I still think it's way better than Giant/Safeway. I still hanker for Wegmans (come ON Wegmans, we love you). I knocked off a star for some of the same things others talk about below and one new thing. I think it all comes down to not so hot management: (1) They seem to do a major restock only once or twice a week meaning that they are frequently out of everything that's on sale, and I mean everything. Then, (2) If you happen to go in during the restock, you have to dodge carts and staff in every aisle. (3) the prepared food has gone drastically down in quality since they opened. The spicy penne is now a revolting mass of too much sauce with almost no pasta (and the pasta ranges from barely cooked to completely overcooked and on one interesting occasion, burnt). The macaroni cheese tastes so plastic-y you wonder why spend the $5, just mix up your own box of Kraft. Some of the holiday side dishes at Thanksgiving and Christmas tasted and smelled so bad after opening them, they went straight into the trash. I had given up on this aisle then last week, I had a weak moment (oh how I love Wegmans prepared foods) and I hovered over the braised asparagus, and another shopper helpfully told me how woody and overcooked the one she bought the other day was and how she'd never recommend it, which brought another person into the conversation and he told us the spinach was clumpy and over-salted and he'd never recommend it. Hey, we formed a pity club right there in the aisle, even moving onto the topic of our collective experiences with (4) how snooty the customer service is when you try and helpfully tell them the prepared food was bad when you bought it, their attitude is "so?" from the counter person right up to the slightly scary store manager... The bread counter has improved - the people know what they are doing these days, which is nice. Still, in general, in terms of management and prepared food, this place is going down not up, and I will not feel guilty at all when Weggies opens and I take my entire business there for ever and ever (and live in my car in their car park). read more

What a great addition to the Kings Contrivance center, especially after the terrible Safeway that was in the same location before. The staff are helpful and check out lines are short. This is my favorite grocery store in columbia. I drive across town to go therefore as it is the only store that has everything I want. First, I will say I am a gourmet cook. Second, that I used to live in northern Virginia and where there are more grocer stores and third, I'm a food snob. I like high quality foods. When we lived in northern Virginia in Fairfax county I went to Whole Foods frequently and to Wegmans. Harris Teeter doesn't offer as much specialty stuff as either of these, but it does offer similar quality and the bulk of what I buy. I can buy organic and air chilled chicken at Harris Teeter that is infinitely better than the so called organics at Giant or Safeway. I can buy nice lamb and bison and veal as well as good cuts of all meats. The produce is fresh and bountiful including farmer markets stuff. The deli is better than Safeway and Giant too (or anywhere else around here). And it offers good bulk packed dried nuts and a good selection overall. Checkoutnisnalways quick and friendly. I'm also switching to their pharmacy as its way morer professional than my local Safeway or Giant. So happy to have discovered this store and go their despite it being an extra 10 minutes to get there. read more

I usually do my grocery shopping here and it is a great store. In one trip, I bought a jar of pasta sauce and for the life of me could not get it open when I got home. My husband and my 2 sons tried and nothing. I then took it back to the store and asked if I could exchange the jar of Ragu for another. The strapping young manager then asked if he could try to open it. I laughed and said have at it. With no effort whatsoever, he opened it like magic. I was perplexed! He then leaned in and said, "By the way, I'm Captain America and it has been a pleasure to serve you" and walked away. I stood in the aisle for at least 4 minutes just staring into space! It was breathtaking! I was speechless! I can't believe super heroes really do exist and work at our friendly neighborhood grocery store! Thank you, Captain America! read more

One of the worst. I go there for lunch once in a while simply b/c I like to get some fruits as well but whenever I got there, I never got good service. 1. Can't get sandwiches before 11:30AM. If sandwiches won't be available then put up side to indicate that. 2. Long wait. I'd be standing in front at the sandwich stand for 10-20 minutes before someone shows up. 3. Staff are rude. 4. Salad bar is not fresh. Only one good thing to say is the fruits are decent. Got to find myself a better place to go to get lunch, and fruits. read more

This may not seem like a big deal, but to me, it is an annoyance. I am allergic to cherries. So when I go to Harris Teeter and thank I am purchasing an apple turnover (because that is what the sign in the case says), I would really like to bite into an apple turnover when I get home. Why can't the employees of this store separate the apple turnovers from the cherry ones when they put them out? Is this beyond their English skills? read more

I have a fondness for this Hairy Teets (as I am wont to call it) and I can't even pinpoint why. I used to work in Columbia and it was convenient for me to hop over at lunch time for a sub, or sushi. I love their sushi! I no longer work in Columbia, and live in AA Co, so I will go out of my way to get some sushi at Hairy Teets. I usually purchase the spicy California roll with brown rice and another roll (they have some kind of jumbo lumb crab roll that I can't remember the name of at the moment). I visited Saturday night and just purchased the spicy California as I knew I would not be able to eat 2 rolls by Sunday (I am not one to push an expiration or sell by date). They did not have spicy California with brown rice in the refrigerated case, and I inquired with the sushi chef that was there. He said no, they didn't have it, but he seemed to have a whole bin of brown rice on the counter so why he couldn't make it for me I don't know. I didn't inquire as I wasn't in the mood to get in to it. The store itself is clean, and well stocked (except when they have super double coupon days and the crazy couponers come out). I usually go thru self checkout unless the line is long and the another checkout lane is empty. This is my main store to food shop so I often do not have a lot of items. read more

We really like this Harris Teeter! Very clean and alllllllll the employees are so nice. I have to give a special shout out to Nicole in the meat department! She always goes the extra mile when we come and bug her about a certain meat we are looking for. Very sweet and if they are out of something on the shelves, she'll help us find it.
