Favorites: fresh jumbo scallops flown in from Maine, tea smoked duck, minced lamb with eggplant in lettuce cups. We love going here for family nights. The food is always tasty and the ambiance is warm, elegant and beautiful. This owner keeps his restaurant sparkling clean! It has a to go pick up on the side also, which is very convenient. We usually order the sweet dumplings in large quantities and hit the beach. They are gluten free pork buns, that are lightly pan fried to perfection. Delicious and worth coming just for these! We also love to order the pot stickers, chow fun, sweet n sour chicken and mu shu chicken -- the plum sauce is perfect. Unfortunately, the beef dish we had once was very leathery and tough to eat. This dim sum restaurant has a peaceful, low-light interior, simple outdoor seating, and a very busy kitchen pumping out delicious dumplings and shiu mai. Service is quick and efficient, and the food is good. For Marin County, their prices are relatively reasonable--basic dim sum (2-4 pieces) start at just under $6. I have a degree in hotel/restaurant management and was in the "business" for almost 20 years before having an accident. I'm now a person with a permanent spinal injury who uses a wheelchair for mobility. I've been to every type of restaurant, including diners that serve overcooked hot roast beef sandwiches on white bread with gravy and boxed mashed potatoes as well as a few with multiple Michelin stars like the French Laundry in Yountville and Gary Danko in San Francisco. I've also been to Mama's Fish House on Maui multiple times. So I've experienced both the worst and best that industry has produced. And, in years past, have been to both Hong Kong and Kowloon, eating traditional Dim Sum in both locations. Last night, my wife and I once again decided to have dinner at the Harmony Restaurant, located in Strawberry Village in Mill Valley. The Harmony is owned by Norman Louie and is a full-service restaurant. The restaurant is also fully wheelchair accessible (including a few dining tables) with fully accessible bathrooms. The Harmony serves traditional Chinese food as well as Dim Sum but with a twist. And, in my opinion, and that of my wife, the Dim Sum clearly stands out as among the best, if not the best that we've tasted. I say that confidently because we are fans of Dim Sum and have eaten its varied styles in many Bay Area and worldwide Chinese/Dim Sum restaurants. Norman's Dim Sum has the freshest ingredients that are locally sourced, and his staff who create the dumplings are clearly well-trained. A good example of their exemplary creations is the Harmony Shrimp Dumpling, shrimp encased in a thin translucent dumpling wrapper and served in a bamboo steamer. We also ordered (for 2) the Peking Duck served with scallions and steamed tea buns. Absolutely the best Peking Duck I've ever tasted! There are many reasons we love Harmony. One is that Norman is seemingly always present and watching his cooking and serving staff to assure they are producing the best food and service possible. Also, and probably because I was once in the "business", the restaurant is actually clean! Most restaurants we go to these days have given up using tablecloths on their dining tables due to the cost. That would be OK if the staff kept the tables, silver, glasses, and yes, restrooms, spotlessly clean. Unfortunately, at most restaurants, the tables aren't clean and end up being "sticky", and the restrooms.......well, I won't go into details, but you get the idea! Those "conditions", to me, hold almost as much influence on my opinion as the food and service. And as to service, last night, our server, Winston, took amazing care in serving us. Even the support staff that bussed the tables, served my wife's split bottle of French Champagne and did it correctly, tilting the glass while pouring the Champagne! I've read a number of reviews of Harmony and must say that most give Harmony a few stars because of the "minuscule" servings at high prices. Normally I might agree, but in the case of Harmony, Norman uses nothing but the best (and most expensive) ingredients in all of the dishes, including Dim Sum. Yes, expensive, but given the quality (and I didn't read any reviews that said the food quality was poor), the prices are reasonable and to be expected. Since Covid, the prices for everything have gone crazy! Across the Highway 101 freeway from Harmony, the County's cheapest gas station, the Arco, now has regular gasoline at around $4.30 per gallon!! Now that's crazy! I hope you will try Harmony. We must support this local business. Norman, the owner, deserves kudos for his effort to bring Marin County residents the best Chinese food, including Dim Sum, in the Bay Area! And, hey, Michelin, you need to have one of your "testers" try Harmony. At a minimum, that restaurant should get at least one star!!! read more

I recently visited Harmony for an early to go dinner. My attempt to read a menu online was thwarted by a non-functioning website. I got some help from yelp's photos etc. When I arrived, I requested a to go menu at the To Go entrance and told they didn't have one?? So I borrowed one from the dining room. I ordered several dishes including Chinese chicken salad. Wow, what a disappointment. It was chopped iceberg lettuce that was limp, chopped small pieces of chicken, and a lot of olive(?) oil, that resembled 5-20 wt. motor oil. The 'oil' stood out because it muted any vinegar. Worst salad for $25!!! ever. The service was stunted by employees who needed you to repeat yourself 2-3 times. Food server who needed you to repeat yourself, and an owner who needed me to repeat myself. I will stick with Fish Restaurant in Sausalito (2 miles south). Last week, I had a fresh Alaskan Salmon(rare) salad on a bed of fresh organic greens with a sassy vinaigrette dressing $28 with a front row picnic table looking at the Sausalito harbor and Tiburon Peninsula. read more

Save up your money, and do not bring your appetite. At Harmony Restaurant, you will pay at least twice as much as the next closest dim sum place and receive about half as much food. The menu says prices start at $4.65 per order, but most orders are more like $7. The Phoenix prawns are good, but only come 2 to an order. The brussels sprout potstickers (3 to an order) are innovative and taste pretty good. The scallop shu mai (3 to an order) have a decent flavor. The classic shu mai are okay, but very small (4 to an order). The shrimp gow (4 to an order) are very small and unremarkable. The crescent mushroom dumplings have very little filling and only come 2 to an order. The bbq pork buns also lack filling (3 to an order). Each dim sum order takes at least 20 minutes to prepare, so call in advance. There is sufficient parking at Strawberry village. The staff is friendly. They limit capacity to 3 people inside at one time. They also serve Chinese food like fried rice, chow mein, etc., which is pre-prepared and sitting behind a glass counter. Food is excellent, when it eventually arrives. Prices are outta sight even for multi-millionaire Marinites of 44 years! Problem is skinflint who owns the joint and refuses to employ more than one server (for 12-15 tables) so the poor man or woman, who singularly work from 11 AM to 8 PM, have to run from table to table and often screw up orders, et al, et al. Food: The food was particularly bland. I ordered the fried rice, which was simply white rice and all the add-ins with very little flavor. The other people with me also ordered chicken dishes, and it was agreed that the chicken was the best part, but it was still very bland in all of our opinions. Service: The service was OK at best. We got sat in a two person table by the window. Thick quality napkins were provided along with 3 dipping sauces. Service was quick and efficient as dim sum rolled out quickly in their bamboo steamers. Waitress came by several times to check up on us. Water was refilled constantly. Prices range from $4.5-7.5 per order. Higher end prices but the food is worth it with local ingredients, hand crafted dim sum, no MSG, trans fat free. They have also wheat free, gluten free and vegetarian items. There are a huge selection of dim sum and a little bit for everybody's taste buds. Overall, good experience. read more

Great dim sum. Inventive, delicious and varied. The crescent dumplings had the most delicious chicken, shiitake and bamboo shoot filling, another dumpling had leeks and corn, and another had mushrooms and pea shoots. All delicate with thin wrappers. The Peking duck appetizer is ordered by the piece and was perfection. Crispy crispy skin, juicy duck meat and scallions served with sweet warm buns. The meal here was easily the most I've ever spent on Chinese food and also easily the worst. My non-Asian wife makes better wonton soup and fried rice at home. The cherry on top is the owner processing your CC payment table-side, staring at you as you select the tip amount. She sneered as I rejected the preset tip amounts, which start at 18% on the low end and use the total bill amount (including tax) as its basis. Having really enjoyed their fresh, authentic potstickers from their attached takeout outpost, I decided to take Mom with me to try out a full-blown sit-down luncheon here. OF NOTE: I awarded this restaurant 3 stars because this is a nice, more upscale Chinese (Cantonese) restaurant, something fairly rare for Marin County. I feel confident that my non-Asian friends (and husband, even), along with my non-Chinese speaking compadres, who aren't so comfortable in typical traditional Chinese dives found in SF Chinatown, would feel totally at home here! Having said that, if you're looking for excellent traditional Cantonese food in voluminous portions at bargain basement prices, you'll leave very unsatisfied. This is not a "ho leng, ho peng" kind of a spot! (Loose Translation meaning, great food at great prices). Service: This was excellent! Our server, who also dubbed as the hostess, was very attentive, helpful and pleasant. Even though she was Caucasian, she understood the Chinese pronunciation of the dim sums and teas. That was definitely a pleasant surprise! Based on some of the mixed reviews regarding service here, I wasn't sure what to expect. No problem at all in this category, but that may be partly attributed to the sparse later midweek lunch crowd. Ambiance: Very relaxing, outwardly clean and very pleasant. An exception though, were the brief, but very loud conversations in Cantonese taking place among the cooks in the kitchen. Please have management inform them that they're not cooking at home! Value: You won't find it here! You will pay, but you just won't get. The Colossal Prawns we're $21.00 for 5 prawns or $4.20 PER prawn!! Look at the dish, and decide for yourself. These are par for the course prices here. Just know that going in. Food: Won ton soup - Wouldn't get this again. Unsure how fresh the meat was. This had a slightly freezer-frozen taste to it. However, I liked that they were wrapped in the traditional way, the way I knew it to be growing up. Phoenix Prawns - Now, we liked these. Perfectly fried with ground shrimp. However, they were $7.50 for just 2 pieces!! Huh? Multi-grained Rice - Nice variation from standard white or brown rice. This is something you'd find in nicer Chinese restaurants. Baby Spinach Dumplings & Fun Gor Dumplings - The wrappers we're very fresh and held up with good texture, but the fillings in these were so mushy that I couldn't decipher any of the ingredients inside. Colossal Prawns - Enjoyed the light sauce, and the fact that my request for very little salt was precisely prepared accordingly. Mom and I enjoyed it for what it was, but as two Chinese gals looking for better value in Chinese food, we don't see making this a regular stop. This used to my favorite Chinese restaurant in Marin. Key word "used to". Why? Well I started eating here 8 yrs ago back in the days of acceptable customer service, decent portions and prices. Nowadays all 3 of this restaurants strengths have become tragic weaknesses. The portion size has decreased over 50 percent in the last 5 years years while the price has increased by 20 percent. Even in a situation of hyper inflation these increases don't seem justified. Furthermore, sauces are no longer free- if you ask for more than three, apparently they are 25 cents each. Apparently it's the managers policy but I highly doubt he would care as happy customers mean more revenue. The word of mouth goes a long way and the last experience was abysmal. See attached picture. I am conflicted. The food was awesome. Brian and I love Dim sum after first being introduced to this concept last year while in San Francisco. We were excited to try it again this year. Unfortunately, we waited over twenty minutes to be greeted by a host. I had to flag her down and she still took another five minutes to address us. There were empty tables -so we were confused. She indicated that they were short staffed. There were lines for pick-up, take-out, and indoor dining and no one knew what line was for what service. The phone rang off the hook the entire time we were there which indicates to me that the food is delicious, but Harmony is understaffed. The Dim sum was great. Once we were seated, we were served quickly. Parking is on the street or in a small lot. Bathrooms were clean. Bring your wallet-Harmony is pricey. Very Loud. Terrible! We ordered 5 take-out dishes all of which were extremely bland and tasteless. Included were 6 little plastic cups filled with various spicy concoctions. Evidently the chef must have wanted us to decide which spice went with which dish. Seriously? We tried and failed at improvement. I can't say enough about this restaurant. Ambiance was very nice, contemporary, clean, airy. Service was excellent. Very attentive staff, never had to ask for refills, friendly and knowledgeable. Norman, the owner came to our table and told us about how he travels the world to find the best recipes and vendors for the best products. He has some long term employees and it is obvious that he treats them well. His passion for food and the restaurant clearly was conveyed to us. Food was the best! Everything was hot, delicious, tasty, not oily, fresh tasting, all with a different twist than the normal Chinese food. Chicken salad was excellent, with the hot mustard twist. The lamb lettuce wrap with eggplant and chili flakes / basil was out of this world! What a nice combination of flavors. My favorite was the tea smoked duck. Crispy skin, nice smokey flavor, lean and tasty meat. Harmony signature beef (certified angus) was excellent, very tasty and tender melt in your mouth meat! We had the jumbo scallops (they were so huge!), cooked just right. Norman explained to us that he found a vendor in New England that will deliver them fresh to him. It clearly does not cut corners and tries to find the best quality food for his restaurant. We had two vegetable dishes, each not overcooked, just right, fresh tasting. For dessert we had banana sesame balls, very unique and tasty! We waited more than 40 min for our food and had no silverware. Food wasn't good at all: We ordered the Shrimp Fried Rice and Beef with Broccoli. Shrimp was chopped up in small pieces and had the nerve to be scarce. The rice was undercooked. Beef was rubbery. Beef with Broccoli didn't even come with rice! I had to ask for fried rice as an accompaniment, was charged extra, and we had to keep asking for it and wait another 15-20 min to get that. I couldn't even enjoy it to eat with the beef and broccoli IF it had been good! For a bill of $50+ for 2 people, I expect a lot better! We won't be returning. read more
