How is this place still in business? I went there at 6 pm on a Thursday and the door was closed and almost came off the hinges when I opened it. All of the lights were off except one over the desk in the back. A young woman came out and asked what I wanted. She was polite and friendly. I told her I was picking up an order for my husband. She grabbed the only bag and handed it to me. The tables were empty, no one else was there, and the large fish tank was filled with trash or something. It was sad. The food had a mushy quality as if it had been microwaved many times. It was very salty. We ordered soup, oyster beef, sweet and sour pork, and rice. The won ton soup was filled with pieces of chicken, pork, shrimp, vegetables, and mushy wonton. It was not horrible but not good. The others were inedible. We threw everything out. Even the rice was hard and stale. I'm sorry to see more business failing and I don't want to leave a bad review, but argh!! read more

Stopped by there last weekend on a whim. We hadn't been there in many years. It was quiet in the dining room. Ordered the Wonton Soup, Chicken with Black Bean sauce, Crispy Pork Chop, and Fried Shrimp. We were pleasantly surprised. Everything was delicious and we gobbled down every morsel. Horrible. Dimly lit. The food came out so fast it was obvious that it had been sitting in a vat. The meat (supposedly pork) was so thoroughly marinated that all you could taste was the soy sauce. They deep fried the eggplant (who does that?!?) but because it had been soaking in the sauce the batter was soggy and separated. The sauce was Dead Sea salty but otherwise flavorless. I'm not sure what menu we were looking up online but when we came to pick up the food we ordered we were absolutely shocked that it came out to $65... The online menu didn't match that at all. We paid it without saying anything because we never asked for the total over the phone. So for $65, how was it? Well, it was very average and no better than other Chinese places that cost half as much. When it comes to the specifics of the food, the Walnut shrimp was flavorless, the sweet and sour pork was ok, the lemon chicken was meh, the chicken chow mein was fine, and the veggie egg rolls were decent. And for $65, I shouldn't be using words like "ok" to describe the food. And that's why China Villa gets 3 stars from me. read more

I've had a very tough emotional few days and I called in at closing to ask if they'd still take an order - I was fully expecting to be told no. Much to my surprise the woman I spoke to kindly said yes without hesitation. One thing - chicken chow fun. My order was piping hot with plenty of flavor and salt just as I'd hoped. Chewy noodles amongst, tender chicken and crunchy cabbage. Excellent. The food was good but the woman who was so kind as to take that order deserves a 10/10 in my book. The takeaway menu here includes vegetarian/vegan options and our entrees have so far been generously portioned with clean and well flavored sauces - not too oily, not too salty. This is kind of a big deal for us because it might become a more regular takeout option ! It's also very close by and incredibly convenient - I hope they plan on being great indefinitely! As an aside, if there were ever a mild, eggplant, bamboo, and shiitake mushroom stir fry with tofu - I would likely order it all the time.....please and thank you lol read more

Meh... The food was alright, but the service was seriously sub-par. I don't even blame the server; she was the only worker in the restaurant, and, between helping us and taking phone orders, she did the best she could. Our food took forever and arrived at different times. Checks took even longer. Water refills seemed to be by-request only, and it wasn't easy to attract her attention from across the room. I tried the vegetarian chicken and broccoli. My friend got prawns with peanuts, and what he considered to be far too many water chestnuts. We split a pot of steamed rice and got some hot chili oil for drizzling. For the most part I enjoyed my entree. The sauce was superb and there was plenty of broccoli. Sadly, though, there was something a little off about the "chicken" and I couldn't place what it was--the texture?--the taste?--both? I'm still not sure, but it had an overly soft musty quality that I wasn't a fan of. I probably would have enjoyed it more had I ordered tofu instead, but our server didn't speak the best English and I chose not to confuse her with any alterations. My friend ate the prawns and left the rest, so I tried a bit of his as well, and it was good, particularly the peanuts. Came here on a weekday and dine-in. Only three tables available to eat at as they are still following COVID regulations. Ordered the house combo chow fun (pork, shrimp, and beef), seasoning was so flavorful, but all the protein was over cooked. Also ordered the egg flower soup and I was surprised it had tomatoes. We have ordered takeout food from here about three times now. The sauces are always so flavorful and they give great portion sizes. I also feel like the food isn't overly oily either, which I love. This is one of the closest Chinese food places to our apartment and this is very good. While we haven't dined inside the restaurant yet, the inside was very clean and a very pretty environment with lots of authentic looking decor. I believe they even had a koi pond! This has a lot of the feel you get from family run neighborhood places in SF , where the staff is relaxed but will attend to you as needed , and where the food is as a rule home style , So for most of the dishes its best to go in with an understanding that flavors are not going to be delicate , that said there are some dishes that I liked that made it worth the trip , We has an order of Fried Rice & also one of Green Beans , both were what I expected What was better then I had anticipated where the orders of Mango Chicken , that had large thick slices of Mango , in a sauce that was not to sweet , and a Hot Platter of Black Pepper Beef , that had large well sauced pieces of Beef , that were flavorful and fork tender. The Platters are finished table side and in my opinion they get extra attention making them a good choice My suggestion , order one or more of the Platters , to get the best China Villa might have read more

We really enjoyed our dinner here! We wandered in on an early weeknight, mostly because it was geographically desirable to two appointments we had in the nearby area, but with about 2 hours to kill in the middle. China Villa is located in the traffic-busy "hub" of San Rafael, Kentfield, & San Anselmo. After a great Indian summer, Marin was finally turning autumn chilly. Walking into this restaurant, you would wonder why it is so deserted and that maybe something was amiss. But soon you realize that the phone is ringing off the hook with phone orders - about a dozen people walked in to pick up their orders while we were there for an early dinner. Nicely appointed, we started with fried won ton skins with a delectable sauce and then promptly asked for another (and received!) Addicting and fattening, they were great and such a simple idea! We ordered the BBQ pork chow mein with fried noodles - we loved and devoured it promptly. We also had lemon chicken which was not like the traditional chinese lemon chicken, but rather a whole breast sliced and coated with the delicious lemon chicken crust (usually they are chicken tenders and the texture is more bumpy than smooth - at least in our experience). We found it good, nonetheless. The service was very polite; since we know our way around a chinese menu, they didn't have to help much, but we were delighted when they gave us more wonton skins! They also had someone there playing a stringed instrument (like a japanese koto, but not too sure what it was); he may have been practicing more than performing, but it was kind of nice for atmosphere. The price was reasonable and I'm sure we will be back. If you are looking for reasonable dining and/or good take out, this one is a good one to put on the rotation! read more

I agree with the previous reviewer: new name (China Villa), same location, same food. I'd agree on good service. But I'd add that the wine list says China Villa and that the menu says Ming Garden. That should have been a clue... Now, it could be I was spoiled by so many decades in The City eating great Chinese food. Pot stickers were doughy. Oyster Sauce Beef had mushrooms but no oyster sauce taste. I like the beef seared on the outside and a little pink on the inside. I like rice that has a nice gluey taste and doesn't look like it's been sitting around. The tea was good. Net net I thought the new name would imply new ownership and a rise in the level of quality of food. read more

This place isn't the BEST but it's not the WORST. Freshness wise -meh. It's so so. There is never anyone dining in (from the times I've been there) so it's always empty. The waiters are very nice and attentive. They do not have any sort of edible hot chili sauce, just some weird old fermented one. The sweet and sour chicken is pretty good - and the hot and sour soup is just ok. The lunch special has hot and sour soup, choice of entree, and either fried rice, chow main, or white rice (you can't do half and half which is a bummer!) All in all it's just alright! read more

Wow! We were on vacation and staying in San Anselmo when we happened across this hidden gem. We ordered one of the dinners for two and an order of pot stickers. Biggest and best pot stickers I've ever had, and then the dinner course started with the biggest bowl and best won ton soup we've also ever had. We were stuffed after that, the rice was awesome as was the sweet and sour pork and beef and broccoli. Just an amazing dinner. Please move to Seattle! read more

Like others, used to come here a lot especially for lunch. Stopped coming when owners changed hands, been awhile, thought I'd try it again. Lunch: 9.25, comes with soup , rice and chosen entree. Tea costs $4.75 and its NOT good. ( why am I paying for bad .25 cent tea). Asked for green bean chicken in black bean sauce received mixed vegetables chicken in black bean sauce. Chicken rubbery actually spit a piece out. The soup was burn your mouth hot. The fish tank was super low in water and empty boxes stacked up all around walk way to the bathroom. THIS LOCATION IS NO LONGER MING GARDEN. China Villa moved from San Rafael's Northgate Mall to this location recently, and all the signage has changed, as has the menu, which appears to be the same as China Villa offered in San Rafael. I had a wonderful lunch here, it was light yet satsifying, and a great value. The lunch specials come with both soup, and a Chinese Chicken Salad. The service was prompt and friendly. We got the crab cheese puffs, veggie potstickers, sweet & sour pork and some kind of beef that my husband ordered and I can't remember what it was. It was the first Chinese takeout we've had since moving to San Rafael and it was pretty good! I look forward to ordering from them again and trying some different things. I wasn't super blown away by what we got (except the potstickers!) but felt it held potential. The cheese puffs would have been better hot out of the oil, I am sure. The beef was fine, I guess just the pork was kind of meh, but not in a greasy gross way, just less flavorful that I had hoped. Overall, I have to say their customer service was excellent, from the guy that took our order to the delivery driver.
