OK, so here's the deal. This review is specifically about the repair shop (the one they just bought), not the hardware store itself (which is fantastic). I also would give 0 stars if I could, because you should get zero stars if you take my money and do not fix the problem. I took my Poulan chainsaw in to have it looked it, as it was not starting (and yes, I was specifically following the instructions on how to start it). They "cleaned the fuel filter", told me it was running great....and charged me $30+ for the privilege. Great, I thought, no problem. In a stupid move on my part, I did not test the saw before taking it all the way up to my property (45 minutes away) to cut up a tree. Lo and behold, it doesn't start. In fact, fuel is leaking everywhere after only one attempt. I took it back in, and they agreed to look at it again. Today I pick it up, and ask what the issue was, and why it was leaking fuel. "It was flooded. He tested it this morning and it ran", the guy at the counter tells me. "Hmmm, I followed the procedure I normally follow, so I don't think it was leaking fuel because I flooded it". The guys says "Let's go outside and start it". Sure enough - it does not start! "You're sure he started it?" I ask. "Yeah he did - I mean he did sometime today, I wasn't here". He tried a few more times, no dice. He says "okay, we'll check it back in". I just said "I've been here twice, they couldn't fix it, I'll just take it somewhere else". His response "well, OK." Now you might be thinking this in and of itself doesn't warrant a one-star review. You are right - in fact, I likely wouldn't be writing this if that was the only issue. However, I brought it in to test a theory. My friend was having problems even getting his saw worked on there. It had been there over a month. He was told repeatedly over many weeks that his saw was "the next one up", or "the parts have been ordered". I figured I'd take mine in to see if that's a one-off issue, or if I run into problems as well. Now we know. Oh, by the way: after two months my friend, normally a very nice guy, finally called and asked "Are you working on my saw or not?" The response was "Absolutely not". He came and picked up his saw yesterday. I don't know what he said to them in the shop, but I'm sure he probably (in his nice way) told them he'll never bring it there again. "Absolutely not". Nothing something you say to a pissed off customer whose saw you've had for two months - I mean, who says that? I'm not even convinced anyone is working on these things. My understanding is that the place was fantastic until Hardware Sales bought it. Now there are nothing but problems. I would find somewhere else to take your equipment to be worked on, because you likely won't get it worked on here. Let me rephrase that: they will work on it, and your parts will be "on their way" for the rest of time, or they will have started it....maybe. I hold out no hope that this review will even be responded to. Why would they? They have my money. read more

Hardware Sales is the best! Has everything you could ever want to get your projects done and their staff is extremely helpful to find whatever you're looking for. I was in the rental shop the day before thanksgiving trying to get a saw for a quick cut on a door. They said "no no no, we got a table saw here, and since you are just making one cut go ahead and set it up out back." They let me use a drill for the hinge holes too, I made my cuts and holes and was done with the project. These guys made a great start to my holiday being so incredibly generous. read more

The only con I have about it (other than getting lost in all the stuff, a plus also, no?) is that about half the time whatever I want is on the balcony level. Of Bellingham's many fine gems, I would happily argue that no business serves the local handyman better than hardware sales. Today the cashier says to me "we don't make that much money on some products so therefore I'm going to pick and choose your discount" WHAT A LOAD OF CRAP! I spend $900 and that's how I get treated??? I shop at Hardware Sales when I want EXCELLENT customer service and advice OR if I want something unusual. Sometimes I bring people here when they are visiting from out of town; it's that amazing! The store is labyrinthian and I occasionally find a whole different part of the store I'd never seen before. For someone that lives far from home, it's like having a Dad on call whenever you have an odd project. They've spent a good chunk of time helping me find just the right sized screw, that ultimately cost only a few cents. These guys know their stuff. These guys have a ton of stuff. Although I didn't find what I was looking for here, an employee pointed me in the right direction. Better yet, told me where I could get what I was looking for used and about a fifth of the price! (dishwasher wheels, $10-15 new at maytag vs. $2 used at Appliance Depot). A Bellingham treasure. Honestly I would give them six stars if I could. Here are the reasons: 1) They have people who know things - lots of things. Lots of people to help you. They have help on every aisle, skilled and knowledgeable. I suspect many of the help are retired or semi retired plumbers, contractors, etc. They have salvaged my PVC, pex, and general repair projects. Lots of times. 2) They have pretty much everything. I shop in hardware stores in Seattle that are good, but really not in the same league. 3) They can make custom hoses from polybraid, Goodyear heat-tolerant rubber, etc. 4) They have every fastener known to man (that someone can lead you to immediately and you can buy in any quantity you want). 5. You can use their rebar cutter for free. Frankly there are many more reasons as well. They are just the best. I love this store. read more

Many times I've gone in with a limited understanding of what I needed, and the floor staff have listened to my questions, found exactly what I need, advised me on bargains and quality, and told me how to use or install what I'm purchasing. They're locally owned, have competitive pricing, unmatched knowledge, a huge inventory, a fair and straightforward return policy, and take the time to help you do a good job. I've been in a lot of hardware stores with a lot of strange projects and really dumb questions, but none of the others can even come close to Hardware Sales for inventory, stock levels, staff levels, staff knowledge or customer service. This place is simply amazing. If they don't carry what you are looking for (unlikely), they will gladly order it for you, or it is no longer made, or you don't actually need it because the amazing staff will walk you through how to do what you want to do with something better and probably cheaper. They have a huge inventory, which is well organized and well stocked. They rent another very large inventory at very reasonable rates. They also sell used office equipment out of a warehouse that is, on it's own, easily four times the size of most hardware stores where I live now. I have found some great stuff there. And they do kitchen & bath remodels. Only, at Hardware Sales you get a lot more choices for a very competitive price. The employees are outstanding. They ask me if I would like any help--I don't have to hike all over the store looking for someone who is willing and capable of answering a question. These people want to help customers and they have the knowledge and skills to do so. I can go into this store with a strange idea of something I want to build. They get excited about the project and come up with several ideas on how to make it. They find all the parts, try them out.... They will also explain to a complete novice how to fix plumbing, lay tile, install almost anything. And, if I forget some crucial detail, I can call and someone will explain it again. Where else do you find all of this? You might pay less at a box store. Then again, you might not. Either way, did you get the best widget for your project and for your money? Shame on anyone writing a bad review of Hardware sales, what can you even compare Hardware Sales to? Lowes? Home Depot? These big stores have there place but are not even close in service, and staff. I walked in with a fuse from a house built in the dinosaur age, no one else had it. Must have been an oddball because no one else even knew what type it was. But Hardware Sales Staff takes one look and says "dang haven't seen one of these in a long time,,, hmm,,, I think I saw one stuffed up here" the guy dig's in and finds one that they happen to have stuffed into one of there shelves!
