Always been amazing. Had so much fun nerding out at the knife counter, the younger fella whose name I can't remember was more than accommodating and really knew his stuff! I am hard to impress when it comes to pocket knives. Very reasonable prices for brick and mortar store, often seeing people charging a lot closer to msrp and higher in Seattle. Go get a sick spyderco pm2 in cruwear with canvas micarta, or maybe the salt serious pm2 in glorious magnacut! Or just a mora if you need an amazing 20$ knife. Best part of the store? At the end of January 2025 I took my leaf blower for service,which was purchased at Hardware sales. The blower was running rough . The service department charged me about $160 and claimed the blower was running correctly after the service. Due to inclement weather I had to wait about a month in order to use the blower. The initial problem was not corrected as the blower continued to run aberrantly. Then I returned to the service department explaining that the blower continued to have issues. Two days later, after another service check I was told that the reason the blower was not running well was because I used the pre mixed gas which was in a 16 oz "can" format. That product is being sold at the store, right next to the area where the blower are displayed. The service people said the gas becomes stale very quickly in those cans and I that I should always use "fresh" gas. I have bought four Stihl gas products from Hardware sales. No on ever told me to avoid using the canned gas after I bought those implements! Despite everything,"new" gas and a report that the blower was running perfectly the blower continues to run roughly. I used to be a 5* fan of HS. I first became acquainted with them in 1996. They were 6* fantastic in every department, items, hardware, tools, repairs, rentals, and the staff were extraordinary in their knowledge and eagerness to help; even finding work arounds when parts for an old something weren't available anymore. Prices were fair, and service, including returns or replacement, was paramount. These were experts, folks than had been in their trade for years, not just sales staff. I am also an advocate of shop local when you can. I hope they get back to basics...not sure what happened, but local isn't always best. Service has dropped off, selection is pretty much the same, and prices are questionable whether competitive or not. Sadly, after generations of serving whatcom, this isn't the same business it was even 10 years ago. read more

I own a local business in town and went to Hardware Sales to buy some supplies to paint over metal posts that had begun rusting. I was rushing towards the checkout counter when an employee named Megan stopped me and asked what my plan was. Once I'd explained my project she recommended that I buy some Ospho rust treatment to apply to the metal posts prior to painting, so I could actually deal with the rust appropriately by converting the red iron oxide into black ferric phosphate. It was a huge help and Megan was a total pleasure to work with. She was knowledgeable, kind and funny. This is exactly the sort of interaction that keeps me coming back to Hardware Sales. I needed a gasket/O-ring for our bathroom sink pop-up drain stopper. I found something similar to what I needed online, but nothing in the right size. I decided to go over to Hardware Sales because they always seem to have what no-one else does and if they don't have it, they can generally get it. I spoke to Davey in the plumbing department, showed him the plug and what I needed to make it work and after a bit of looking, he found exactly what I needed and saved me a ton of money because the alternative would have been to replace the entire drain system (something I doubt I could do). Pros: * Best selection in town, better than the big boxes. * Particularly when it comes to hardware - you know, nuts and bolts. * They have something of everything. * Staff always try to help out. Cons: * Prices are 10 to 50% higher than the best available. Sometimes that's the price you pay for having good things available right away locally, except... * Short hours - closed Sunday, and at 6pm most days. If you work a 9-to-5 it's hard to find time to make it in on your off hours. Of course this is less of a problem for trade customers who are here as part of their work. * If you're looking for something *specific*, odds aren't so good they'll have it. They don't carry a lot of specialty products. In particular, tool selection is a bit limited. Of course this is understandable, a lot of exotic products would just gather dust on the shelf. * No online catalog. It's frustrating, they know how to make an online catalog, because they already have one - for wholesale customers only. I often end up shopping elsewhere because I don't know what HWS has in stock and what they're charging for it without making the trip first. * Recommend doing your own research and double-checking advice. * Limited selection of "outdoor power equipment" (mowers, blowers, etc.). For example I was disappointed to find no Makita XGT. They have an outpost across the street that carries and services Toro and Husqvarna, but as with most things, prices aren't real competitive and selection is limited. Overall - I'm glad they're here, it's astonishing that a place like this exists in a little city like Bellingham. But they have their limitations and I oftentimes find myself shopping at their chain/online competitors. Ideally they'd focus on doing what the chains don't. read more

Overrated and overpriced! Although they do have a great selection of varied items this store doe not deserve it's "customer friendly" reputation. The prices are deceptively higher than other retailers. The on site employees lack basic knowledge of hardware parts and could not even answer my question of what to use to attach two pieces of wood to each other. In Bellingham there is no competition for Hardware sales .They are very stingy with returns and I had to argue with the manager for a $10 credit. I will grant that it is easier to shop there tan the bib box store due to the stores small size.And they do carry various rare parts and equipment. read more

So when I think of Hardware Sales, it's always the Rental Department that I think of. My husband is always working on something and there are always tools he doesn't own. I believe they rent just about everything they sell...everything is of the highest quality and we have never had any issues until Saturday..we had reserved a "ditch witch" aka "groundhog". It was ready on time and John B made the check out process super smooth. Noah reintroduced my husband to the tool and we were on our way. Well, things did not go well at home.. my husband called and then unable to resolve issue, we brought it back. John B and Noah were able to resolve the issue/get us back to work in minutes knowing that this was a weekend project that we needed to get done ASAP. They even reduced our cost for our inconvenience for our time having to take tool back. Noted was the pure honesty and transparency of John B and Noah! We would never think of going anywhere else.. stuff like this could happen anywhere, but how Hardware Sales handled the problem? That's why we will remain loyal customers here! Everybody knows Hardware Sales is the place to go for pretty much any tool or other Fix-It type item you might be looking for. But as an avid sewist and crafter, I just need to mention it's a fantastic place to get supplies for making things like bags, accessories, and other items that you'd pay a premium for at the fabric store. For example, grommets are about 1/4 the price here that they are up the street at the fabric store - and you get twice as many! Just remember to ask one of their friendly sales people where to find what you're looking for, unless you've got hours to spend getting lost in their endless aisles of temptation (although that can be a fun way to spend a rainy afternoon too). I needed to get a car key cut, and thought of Hardware Sales... they gave me a hard time about cutting my key that I bought online that was a higher quality key than they have in stock. I bought two of their blanks, and wanted to get mine cut as a third. They would not do it, and had to call over a Manager who told me that is like Ford selling parts for GM... after I already had two keys made, and would have paid full price to have my third key cut... The Manager then just rudely walked away. This has been the typical experience with HS the last few years, they hate doing returns and if you don't have your receipt forget it. If you wait too long forget it. They want your money, charge more and have cheaper stuff in stock than other places. I'll get my key cut at a locksmith and I'll only go to HS in the future if I'm desperate. read more

Was looking for a particular brand of spray paint. Called all over and this was the only place that had it and at a fair price. Drove from Marysville to Bellingham. Got to the store and noticed there were tons of friendly staff ready to help. Appeared to have an endless selection of everything! I believe it's true that if they don't have it, you don't need it. This is my favorite hardware store in town! I found what I thought was an obscure part for my old Porter-Cable random orbital sander and other parts I needed for it. Been shopping here for nearly 20 years and previously would need to get supplies and parts while with a apartment and Home maintenance company. They always have the best selection of Plumbing, electrical, tools and painting supplies and parts. The Electrical, Plumbing and painting department staff are very knowledgeable and able to answer any question and find just what you need. Upstairs is an area commonly referred to as the balcony, you can get doors and windows rescreened. There is a small selection of Marine Hardware. Also find their rope, chain, grommets and Awning supplies. If you're looking for cleaning supplies and work clothes and boots and safety equipment it's also up there. There's also a recently expanded gardening and Landscaping section with many high quality gardening and yard work tools and newly remodeled washrooms. Hardware Sales is one of my favorite shops in all of the Northwest, they actually reminded me of Hardwick's Hardware in Seattle when I first discovered them. read more

Ever since the power went out, I've needed a big heavy cable to mate a portable generator to the electrical panel in the garage. I found one online that was close, but I'd have to modify one end to make it work - and that's assuming I did it correctly. Before I threw $99 at Amazon for something that might not work, I took photos of the plugs on the generator and the electrical panel and headed out to Hardware Sales. Angus looked at the photos, asked how large long I wanted the cord to be and set to work. He gathered the parts and built the cable right there at the counter. He even installed a short jumper wire to allow the cable to better support the electrical load. I was not expecting this level of service - but I'll take it! The whole thing cost me $75.00. If it is there the guy goes off and after dodging down an aisle he ends up on a ladder 20 feet up! I stopped at Hardware Sales to rent a trencher. I have a Luverne heavy-duty rear bumper rated at 9,000 lbs towing capacity. It's built of 1/2" thick steel (thicker than the frame) bolted directly to the frame. The symbol V-5 indicates its certification of compliance with all requirements contained in Vehicle Equipment Safety Commission Regulation (Chapter 204-70 WAC). This is not your typical stock bumper, which are basically sheet metal, and rated for 2,000-3,500 lbs. However, despite them renting me the exact same equipment at least twice before, and having the same conversation, where I showed them my hitch is rated at 9,000 lbs (over 3x the trailer and equipment), and they inspected it, they declined to rent to me because I had a "bumper ball hitch". I understand their position against bumper ball hitches in general, because most of them are not strong enough, but they refused to make an exception or listen to reason, and were not friendly about it, either. It is the equivalent of a school having a zero-tolerance policy on knives and suspending a kid who had a plastic knife, reason be damned. They effectively cost me $200 and a wasted weekend for having to buy and install the type of hitch they want to see, made of 1/4" steel, rated for 6,000lbs. read more

The more I write the less justice it will do this place. I've never gone to this place without coming out a better man. The big box stores have their place, and as far as I'm concerned it's in 2nd place F-A-R behind Hardware Sales! Not only does Hardware Sales have an amazing array of inventory (if you can't find what you need here, it's probably not made), but their staff is nothing short of amazing. Take in a do-hickey that you don't know anything about, and they'll explain what it is, what it does, how to repair/replace/install that do-hickey, and walk you to where it's located in the store. We recently took in a lamp that wasn't working, thinking we were needing replacement parts. One of the staff took us directly to the parts bin, pulled out the pieces he thought we'd need, and offered to install them right there. He started to pull the lamp apart and discovered it would require a simple fix with no replacement parts, and took care of the problem on the spot. No charge and no sale, but a pair of satisfied customers for sure! I'm a fan of Hardware Sales and would encourage you to become one too! read more

Simply awesome. The staff are amazing and helpful, they can help you with anything in the store. An example is my visit today where I had 2 oddball bolts from doing work on my boat engine that were a bit worn and needed to be replaced. I wandered for about 15 seconds in the screw and bolt section before some helped me. He found the exact bolts I needed, and I was on my way in about 2 minutes after going into the store. read more

They've transformed themselves over the decades to become the most amazing hardware store in the universe. Men of Whatcom County, we have pretty much dumb-lucked ourselves into having a hardware purveyor this amazing in our own back yard! It's been said that you can walk into Hardware Sales with a broken hardware item in your hand, and a friendly, helpful employee will send you out the door with a fully-functioning version of that item. Quite a bit of experience, careful thought, and know how, have made me come back. Traveling through the labyrinths of stock; I always wind up with one question. How is it that I can find anything I need in this cavernous place and have such a hard time at a big box store ten times bigger? The staff are quick to help and very thoughtful. I will rate their rental department negative 5 stars if there is such an option. I rented a drywall lifter for a month and they charged me $680. A brand new lifter, 15 footer, costs only $249 at home depot. Half of the charges on their final bill are hidden charges and the lady behind of the counter is completely not reasonable. That one month rental time, Hardware Sales Rental divided it in to three periods : 2 week + another 1 weeks + another few days, so that they finally charged me for almost two months! why? Because I was "VERY UNLUCKY" just happened to be cut in between their checkout time point. Isn't that rediculars? read more

All I needed was a specific bolt for my bike and with the help of a friendly employee, I was able to find it without a problem. I like the fact that there is plenty of staff here to help while that can always be a problem at the bigger stores. Lastly, the guy that was checking out right before me had a bird on his shoulder!
