So I went to Ace hardware in Bellingham and talked to an older gentleman that I felt should know their products. I told him that I needed a blower vacuum to suck up leaves. Now I figured he would realize that the leaves were wet since it was raining. He showed me the Toro blower vacuum and he said his brother in law has this and it works great. I took it home and started to try and suck up wet leaves and it kept getting clogged. I finally gave up. and just raked the leaves. The clerk never did tell me that this has a mulcher and works best with dry leaves. I have a blower vacuum that just sucks up anything at home. I went to return it, because it wasn't doing what I was told it would and since I don't live there, I couldn't wait for the leaves to dry. I was told by the same guy that sold it to me and one of the younger clerks that I can't return it. They gave me all kind of excuses and I finally gave up. I will never shop there again. I would not have had this head ache if I had gone to Home depot or Lowes. At least they know what they are selling.

While they also sell online, being able to see and play with all of the tools from the website is just awesome. I was almost giggling while walking the aisles. Staff were helpful, and were very personable. With their assistance, I was able to find almost everything I was looking for. Yes the tools are ridiculously cheap, and yes the quality isn't up there with the likes of Snap-on or Milwaukee, but in terms of bang for your buck, this place blows almost any other store I know of out of the water. Some people have had bad experiences with some of their tools, but I think it's honestly bad luck. The reason I keep coming back here is because I feel their tools are pretty solid. Finally, Anne, the older woman, moved away from the register to go put something away and looked right at me, but didnt offer to help or get someone to help. She's always like this-rude and condescending to the women, but oh so nice to the men. Its pathetic. Later, as I was paying for my items and my coupon didnt work, Anne came over to help the cashier and said "we're just having one of those days" while giving me a dirty look. Every time I'm in there, she acts like its a personal insult to have to help anyone. Just retire already. While I was waiting, I saw no less than six people working at the store on a Tuesday afternoon, so if any employees actually cared to help out, it would be a well-staffed store. Instead its just a bunch of paid dead weight. There's an older gentleman there, I believe his name is Martin, who is wonderful-very helpful and knowledgeable, but the rest of the staff is miserable. Given the multiple reviews over a span of years about the same issue, its clear that the manager and owner dont care, so now I drive all the way out to Lynden and support that well stocked store and kind and knowledgeable staff. I'm trying to call as I'm 30 seconds away so I don't have to come into the store. I told the you girl on the phone that I will be around the back, ad it was water softener salts. The conversation was literally "ok" *hangup*. So I pull in around the back, waited about 5 minutes. Nothing... called again and said I'm around the back. "Ok, I'll send someone right out." Of fine. The young chap comes out. Grabs what I thought was my product, and went around the front. Not long after that, he came around the back. So apparently communication doesn't thrive at this place. The nice young man came and loaded the item into my car. I get home and he had loaded pool salts. Not water softener salts. If I had filled that softener tank with that, who knows if any damage to the appliances, or skin damage could have occurred. Since pool salts are to chlorinate the pool. I took the item back to swap the correct one, waited in line as there was someone ahead of me. I don't know if it was a supervisor at the other register, but she could have at least acknowledged me standing there and tell me someone will be right with me. Like, you see me, right? I get the product swapped, but no apology or anything. And seeing some of the other comments here, I think the owner needs to reevaluate the work atmosphere there, because it's so basic. I didn't feel welcomed. This needs to change. Until then, I'll go elsewhere.

However, a certain-special-someone in my life recently took on this fascinating hobby and I, being the loyal-and-devoted-spouse, took it upon myself to visit North Corner with him on a recent supply trip. (Okay, that's a lie. He "just happened" to stop by there while we were running errands and I had two choices: either wait in the freezing cold car or go in with him. So I went in. THIS, as Ma Ingalls would say, is marriage.) But I digress. North Corner is a really cool place! Just spending some time in there made me think, hmmm, maybe I *could* possibly considering giving some thought to someday pondering brewing my own beer. They have everything you could possibly need to do this (and a lot of things you probably don't need but would love to buy anyway - just like any good hobby store). From recipes posted on the wall to bottling equipment, you could walk in here with nothing and walk out with enough stuff to start your own brewery (well, in your garage at least). The guy at the counter is also super-helpful - always a bonus when you're in new territory. If I post a pic of my super-awesome-amazing homemade brew in a few weeks you know it worked!

I'm fairly new to wine making but I'm the type who does a lot of research before jumping into…read moresomething new. Last fall I went around to at least 6 wine supply stores in Skagit and Whatcom and settled on getting all my supplies from here. The reasons are simple: The owner was the most helpful and didn't try to sell me the high-end stuff, the mark-up was less than all the other shops, the big equipment you need is free to use when you buy your grapes through them and prices quoted for grapes were very competitive. I ended up buying 3 wine kits through them because we were too late in the fall to get grapes but so far so good. I'm completely satisfied with the wine we produced which worked out to $2.55 to $4.33 a bottle. The price of the kits was significantly less than the exact same kits at other shops and the wines produced compare to $9 to $24 a bottle retail. Next fall we are looking forward to making wine from grapes. In the meantime I think I'll try making a couple batches of beer!
