Always a good place to get your bbq fix in Roanoke. Be prepared when you get to the front of the line to order. And watch what they give you. It's all by the pound and they'll pile on more than you want if you aren't paying attention! Most meats are all one price per pound. Their beans are great and they're free if you eat on site. Solid BBQ joint - one of our faves. We've gone here three times and there have been lines each time. However, the line Isn't stagnant and people place their orders quickly. Very good bbq. The brisket was near perfection. The ribs were great, though next time I'd just stick with the brisket. The only drawback is the price. Paying market price style always seems to be more expensive. Before I knew it, it was 20 for lunch. While I was full to the brim when I was done, I really didn't want to be in that deep for lunch. So you sort of pick out what you want based on what is in the grill. Then you go inside and there are ALL THE BBQ sides you could ever want. Coleslaw, cornbread pudding, baked potatoes, fruit salad, some sort of cobbler (I'm GF, so I couldn't tell you what the cobbler was - because I have a sad life). As if Hard Eight needs another review... Food is good, I like that they're using wrap to keep things moist. I've had a problem in the past with slow moving items drying out while on the serving grill. If you're visiting at an non-busy time, pick the items that are going to move quickly, or which are wrapped; brisket is always good, ribs, kebobs, etc. Overall, food is very good and the atmosphere is 100% top notch. First time I got a ribeye steak and it was a bit off. I think the steak was a little overcooked and it was very much too salty - the guy cooking the steak needs to go very light on the season salt and you might want to make a point to explicitly tell him that. read more

If you have little room in your stomach, I'd say settle for the brisket! This is a must have if you love spicy food *Jalapeno corn: A creamy heaven that I can't get enough of. I'm visiting from CA & I told my family, "I want a TX meal. I want something we don't have back home." So my cousin brought be out to Hard Eight. This is like a cafeteria style BBQ, something we defitently do not have back in CA. We ordered a little bit of everything: chicken, brisket, pork sausage, ribs & the rib eye! My favorite was the ribeye, served on a hot plate & they have you cut right into it to check if it's the preferred temp before walking away. My kinda service! The chicken was very flavorful as well and the ribs were tender. Their Mac & cheese is packed with ooey-goey goodness & their fries reminded me of Wingstop fries. The reason for the 3 star review is the organization, portioning and temps. The line to get your meat is great but the line for sides was all over the place. You go through one day but they allow you to make 2 lines inside for the side dishes. The issue is the employees are standing in between the lines so it makes for an awkward passing. There was also no bbq sauce one side & we were told to go to the other for it. The side dishes are sold in very small containers with small portions. The Mac & cheese was a little less than $3 but I felt as though I needed 2 for my meal! Not to mention, by the time you get through both lines and find a seat your meat is cold! This is a simple, in your face bar and barbecue joint and the meat is front and center and you can smell it even before you enter the place. Vegheads be afraid. Hard Eight is not for you. This is just the mecca to all things meat. Ribs, chicken, sausage, brisket and bacon wrapped scallops. It is all waiting on you on a custom built smoker which holds so much meat it boggles the mind and makes your mouth think it's Niagra Falls. Grilled corn on the cob, potatoes are also side by side to the massive amounts of pork and fowl and that's even before you make it inside for all the other sides that they have. Jalapeno cornbread, beans, slaw, potato salad and various desserts. BBQ sauce in regular and spicy wait for you in large black pots all warm and sweet smelling. The thing that differs in this place is that you pay by the pound for the meal. It adds up quickly, and you better have an empty stomach because it's alot and it's allllllll gooooooood. I had sausage, ribs and brisket. The sausage was mild but had a great snap on the casing and the flavor was really good. The ribs fell off the bone and the brisket was moist and really great with or without the sauce. The regular sauce was thicker than the spicy, but I do like spicy. All I know is I rolled out of the place. This place is decent but very pricey and the ordering system is not my favorite. I don't like being herded through a hot, smokey, crowded line having to make quick decisions on what to choose from big piles of meat. Some choices are also very dependant on each individual slab of meat presented at the moment. The last time I went the beef brisket was TERRIBLE! Inedible amount of this fat, gristle and sinew. The pulled pork was delicious and moist but in the midst of tons of FAT you had to pick through to get the meat. The best thing was the turkey!!! Moist! No fat to pick through! Definitely get the turkey!!! The pork chop the person I was with ordered was fine for their liking. I thought it was dry. The sides are basic: unseasoned corn on the cob, unimpressive baked beans, small bowl of bag salad. Dessert was little cups of pudding or cheesecake I believe. We are always on the look out for good BBQ. Drove to Roanoke during race weekend traffic. This is a Hard 8 Hard Pass. If you visit from out of state this is not indicative of real TX BBQ. Meat had absolutely no smoke flavor....actually no real flavor at all. You had to use the vinegary bbq sauce to give it taste. Beans were ok, but the major seasoning used was a ton of black pepper. The buttered corn was the best thing about the visit. We also came to hear live music, but apparently who ever was suppose to play did not show up. The dining areas inside had absolutely no AC, so after eating a heavy meat meal we both felt sick from the humid heat. First & last visit. Off to try new places next time. read more

I went to the hard eight in Roanoke with some folks from work for some Texas bbq and was not disappointed. I believe that the hard eight is a small chain. The way the restaurant works is that you pick your meats and they are put on a tray with a price sticker (brisket and sausage for me) and you go inside for sides, beverage, sauce, etc and pay at the end. I picked up a piece of bread, some slaw, and a diet coke (yea I know, who am I trying to kid...). It was crazy hot that day (108 (at least to me being from the northeast)) and the indoor seating was full so we sat outside. The fans and misters on the outdoor seating area made it bearable. I think that it would be phenomenal at night when the temp drops to 95 :-) I thought the food was great, there was a nice bark on the brisket and it and the sausage were super moist. The sauce was a nice combination of sweet and tangy. The slaw rounded it out with a vinegar bite that cut through the richness of the meat. Nice job lads. read more

I ordered the beef brisket, three bone of pork ribs, grilled corn, salad, french fries and peach cobbler. Needless to say I ordered toooooo much food but I wanted to try everything. The meat and french fries were wonderful and hot (heat wise). The grilled corn was dry I didn't eat it. I couldn't eat anymore so I decided to hold my salad for the next day or later; but I left them in the car overnight. Overall the foods is great and the restaurant was clean and great service.
