Came on a Monday and there was a small line, loved seeing the smokers and operation occurring while going through the line, very organized and structured for busy days. You better know what you want when the pitmaster asks for your order there's a menu to look at before hand. You get your meat sliced and any corn or potato sides given to you before walking inside where you'll find other hot sides and all your fixings plus desserts! I was most impressed by the selection of meats this place offers whatever you're in the mood for they smoke up or serve. I was disappointed in the okra as it was mushy and not crispy at all and the sausage while it had some spice lacked some flavor. As a Cali native this lived up to my bbq dreams! I couldn't leave Dallas without trying and thankfully a friend who is a Texas native recommended the place. We came during lunch on a weekday so did not have any long wait and went through the line smoothly. I was a bit unfamiliar with this time of set up where you order food in a buffet style, but the staff were nice and made it easy. Be sure to keep in mind that there are many options before making your way to the cashier! My fav was the brisket paired with the spicy bbq sauce & I also loved the onion rings which I haven't had in forever. Ok Ya'll... I wanted to give Hard 8 a higher rating but I was disappoint. I'll start off with the wins. That brisket boy.... delicious, juicy, tender, and flavorful. I tried a little bit of everything. The pulled pork wasn't dry either. The hot link was spicy and flavorful. The ribs were ok but not terrible. The meat department, overall, is really good. Someone one previously mentioned the smokiness when you walk in and they were right. It hits you as soon as you walk in. I loved that you ordered the meat by the pound. I ended up ordering, in addition to what was previously mentioned, roasted and buttered corn, potato salad, and I got the free beans because we dined inside. I would give the meat a solid 4.5 stars out of 5. But that was about it. It takes a minute to get through the line. When we arrived there wasn't a line but as we were leaving, it was a slow as molasses moving line because they don't rush you to make your choices. After choosing your meats you go inside the restaurant and are able to choose a few extra sides. This is were it started to lack for me. I got the potato salad and it was not very flavorful. It tasted like dry potatoes and mayonnaise. It needed a little more salt, pickles, or paprika or something. I also got some sweet tea for a drink and it just wasn't brewed properly. There is a wrong way to make sweet tea and that's what it tasted like. It was very watery. I got the beans and I thought for sure they'd be flavorful because I saw jalapenos in the mixture but I was sadly mistaken. Again, I needed more seasoning. The roasted corn was super dry. I could've added some butter or something to try to make it better but I was hoping the smokiness of the grill would give the corn a nice char. Oh it charred it alright. That's about all it tasted like. The buttered corn was much better. But it wasn't out of this world better. I've had better corn at the fair. I did like the service and the restaurant was definitely unique. The table set up is like cafeteria seating. You got cozy with your neighbor really quick. The staff was friendly and super attentive with clearing your space when you were finished. I just wished it was a little better flavor-wise. If you're going just for the meat, you're in luck. All I can say is wow I got 1lb brisket, half chicken, sweet potato fries, buttered corn, and peach cobbler. The brisket was so tender and juicy and very smokey tasting! The chicken was amazingly tender and delicious! They gave a great sized portion. I wouldn't order the sweet potato fries again because they were pretty squishy and I prefer crunchy fries. As for the peach cobbler I wouldn't reccomend it. It had a weird taste. Regardless, this place still gets 5 stars because it was my first Texas BBQ experience and I thoroughly enjoyed it! read more

Oh man this place is great. Got taken here by some local co-workers while visiting for work. This place does not disappoint. From the moment you walk in you can see and smell everything they have going on. Then you snake around this line and walk past everything they have cooking on display. It was like waiting for a Disney ride and the anticipation built up. There were a lot of choices, but it was easy since they do everything by the pound. So it's not too tough as long as your eyes aren't too much bigger than your stomach. After the weigh in there's a quick line where they show off the other stuff like desserts and some sides before you get to the end for payment. They also offer beans at a station for free so keep that in mind as you like on the other choices. They have pretty plentiful seating and a very efficient operation. You can tell they take that part of the job as seriously as they take the food. Highly recommend if you are looking for some great Texas BBQ in that area. This is my first ever Texas BBQ and I had high hopes and they remained high hopes after. Loved the food it had great flavor and was really good. I had the jalapeño sausage(my favorite), brisket, bacon wrapped jalapeños shrimp, and some sides. The sausage was my favorite by far. The shrimp was close second and the brisket a respectable third. Wow some of the BEST Jalepeno Sausage and Brisket that I have tried. This was another one of the things I was missing from Texas: BBQ. Going in you wait in a line where the guy takes meat directly off the smoker and hands to you. Brisket and Sausage are ~$16/lb. Ribs are $25/lb. I will be coming back. Prices were super expensive but they were higher than Rudy's. Management here was super nice and even spent 3 minutes walking us to the line and talking through all the different types of options we had. Brisket: My oh my so soft and moist it was ridiculous. I felt like i was in heaven. Jalepeno Sausage: Dang so much flavor doesn't seem spicy until you finish eating it and then you are like "where is the water?!?" Ribs: Just stay away from these. We ended up getting a pound, but they were pretty dry and not moist. Rudy's ribs are better. BBQ sauce: meh experienced better but still decent. FREE BEANS: Weren't spectacular but they were free nonetheless, and there were bits of sausage in it. And some FAT BRISKET. I love the format where you enter through the smokehouse and the pitmaster serves you portions of whatever meat you like - however much you want, an ounce to several pounds - then you pay by the weight. We arrived in Dallas and immediately began looking for great BBQ. It was a coincidence that we were located near Hard Eight. Upon approaching the restaurant, we were overcome by the delicious smoky aroma. This could be their advertising tactic. We selected the half rack of pork ribs. In addition, we had a side of bread and a side of beans. Unfortunately, no corn bread. On the plus side, the beans are self serve from a large hot pot of beans. Good bbq spot. They didn't have moist brisket, so the brisket is going to be similar to a lot of other spots, which is still good but not elite. I should have tried some of the other specialties. I also had the jalepeno sausage which was really good. Fries were just OK (I know that isn't a traditional side for bbq, but I couldn't go heavy with Mac or creamed corn, maybe next time). Had a group of 10 bbq fanatics for Texas/OU game and decided on Hard 8 as I'd been there years ago and it was pretty good back then. Ordered pounds of brisket, turkey and sausage. Very disappointed overall. Brisket was the best part. Good flavor and texture. Turkey was pretty bad. It wasn't cooked completely and about 1/4 of it had to be thrown away. Taste of the remaining turkey was marginal. Super chewy and not much flavor. Sausage was so hard it was difficult to bite through. I thought it was OK, but I think I was the only one. As for sides, even the kids wouldn't eat the Mac and Cheese. The slaw was a soupy mess. The potato salad was just not very good. Oh, and my favorite part of Hard 8? The beans. When you eat there, you can have all you want complementary. When you order take out? Try $12.50 for a quart.....of pinto beans! Why charge so much for something that you give for free on dine in? The final insult was given this nearly $300 order we received exactly 4 (yes, 4) slices of Mrs. Baird's bread...for 10 people. Hard 8 has definately gone downhill in my opinion. read more

A group of us visited Hard Eight recently on a weeknight Tuesday. While the restaurant has a lot of parking available, its seems to be packed daily. The night we went it was a very cold night and it had rained earlier that day. The weather didn't seem to deter the many patrons from coming to have some of the best BBQ around. There was even a line out the door to get inside. Once inside you experience the warmth from the grills and smokers cooking the various meats so we weren't cold anymore. There are two moving lines for ordering the meat of your choice from the grill. At a point early in the line you have the option of ordering a rib eye steak 16oz or 8oz. They have a menu of other delectables to choose from. They even have something for vegetarians. Once past the steak ordering section you see the smokers for the briskets, and you begin to see the grill of all the wonderful meat (chicken, sausage, ribs, and brisket). There is also corn-on-the-cob, and baked potatoes on the grill. Once you request the types of meat you want from the grill, expect to take home a plate full of leftovers because they give you a lot.of meat. I had the ribs and brisket and both were so good, I have to say the ribs were slammin!! The other sides available include a pot of beans at the end of the meat line, you can get bread, cold slaw, green salad, potato salad, I believe they also had macaroni and cheese. They also have a variety of desserts to choose from. I had corn and cold slaw and a sweet tea to go along with my large amount of meat. The pricing was reasonable all of the food I had came out to only $25 which wasn't bad at all. Seating is sort of rustic with wooden like stools to sit on, and seating both inside and the covered patio. On the patio are there was also some entertainment with a guy singing and playing the guitar. This place is also good for large groups. We stopped in here with a large group and as soon as you walk in and smell that smoky aroma, you know you are in for something good. It was nice that you pay in line and then bring your food to the table, so you don't need to worry about splitting the check. If you are eating in, make sure to get the beans next to the soda fountain. The consensus of our group of ten was that the spicy sausage links, brisket and mac and cheese were out of this world. I personally can't stop thinking about the mac and cheese and brisket. I highly recommend coming here and it's great for large groups. How dare they show me the meats before I open the door! Wow, that's all I can say. This place is my kind of joint, everything is bigger in Texas and this barbecue experience lived up to expectation.
