I had a quick trip to Boston on short notice. Jumped on to hotels.com and found Harborside Inn. This may be my new go-to when I'm not looking for amenities. Very friendly staff, clean rooms, central to everything in Boston financial district. They do have an agreement with a local fitness center about a 5-10 minute walk away. The real jewel is the attached restaurant Joia. Held meetings there over great Italian fare. read more

The Scarlet Vetter says..... I recently stayed in this lovely boutique hotel for the second time. I decided I would wait for two experiences to rate it. This hotel, located down by the water, is very hip. It has a lovely lobby and a full business center with multiple computers and a printer. When the printer ran out of ink, the front desk, very kindly offered to have me email what I needed printed to them and they immediately printed it, and they sent over a technician to make sure that the guest printer was reloaded with ink and paper. The entire hotel is nautically themed. It also has a great restaurant attached to it, which I will review separately. When you stay at the hotel, you get twenty percent off your dinner at the restaurant, which is a nice perk. So first.... my review of the rooms, they are very nice. For my second stay I selected a king size single room (city view) and it was well appointed with nautical style lamps and other features and a nautically themed rug. It was extremely clean and comfortable and very spacious for a city hotel room. For Boston, it was also very, very reasonably priced. The good things are, it was extremely clean, it was very quiet and also very very comfortable. They provide an actual room key, like a real metal key with the room number on it, which was an incredibly nice touch. A few of the things that might annoy very seasoned road warriors: the hot water took quite some time to reach the shower, when turning on the shower, but then it was great and the shower was excellent and you didn't have any of those nasty plastic shower curtains hitting your body while you are showering in a strange place.....it was a beautifully enclosed glass shower. The room temperature controls were also not that great. I have an app that tracks my body temperature at night, and it's easier to sleep when it's cooler than not, and it's also better for your body. I was at an elevated temperature all night because I could not get the temperature of the room down m. This could have been because it was a very, very hot night in the summer in Boston when I stayed there. At times, the room felt a bit stuffy and warm to me. As you will see from my picture of the items that are provided in the bathroom, there was no hair conditioner offered. I was extremely unhappy that there was no hair conditioner provided. In any given week, I'm in one or two hotels for multiple nights and I do not travel with things that should be provided by a hotel as basic amenities. If I did, I would be traveling with items that are above the limit for the TSA and I would be extremely weighed down. Again. But the room was quite gorgeous, really, it is very impressive. Maybe because it is in an older building, it suffered from the problem of not having enough outlets..... like literally, there were no outlets. There was no outlet by the desk which is where I had to perform a lot of work. As you can see by the picture, my computer cord had to stretch behind me, and I actually had to step over it, to get into the chair. About the chair. This room was not designed by someone who works for a living on the road. The chair had someone sitting way below their comfort level for the surface on which one would either be typing or eating......you were very far below where you should be and it was very uncomfortable. I ended up taking my computer down to the restaurant and sat at the bar to do a lot of my work, which probably was pretty fun for me but may not work for everyone. For those who hate sitting on the toilet and having your toilet paper behind you and having to reach back to get it, you would be annoyed at this bathroom, because that's exactly what the situation is. However, there is a bar in front of the toilet on which you could put the toilet paper and just leave it there for the duration of your stay. Now, for some of the great things.....the bed is extremely comfortable, and there were multiple pillows. The TV is extremely large. There are very nice amenities in the room such as a boston tourist book with a full city map and also an incredible, wide, full length mirror. There was also a stereo, a safe and a refrigerator. The staff at the hotel were extremely accommodating. Upon check in I was offered a mini bottle of prosecco or a bottle of water. I come to Boston often and have checked out a number of hotels. When I'm on a smaller client budget, I will definitely choose this hotel again as it is incredibly affordably priced and offers everything that is needed for most travelers! read more

I was in town on business and stayed here because it was close to the office. I arrived a bit early and had to wait an hour or so for my room to be ready. The lobby was super cute and there was a business center that I used to do some work. There is also a restaurant attached to the hotel and they offer a discount if you dine there. The front desk staff were so kind and held onto my luggage while I waited for my room. A gentleman who was sitting at a desk in the business center was assisting guests with attractions in the area. There was a 7/11 on the corner and a discount shopping area one block away. My room was super cozy and I really appreciated the travel sized items in the bathroom. The room wasn't huge, but it was a good size for my needs. I didn't hear anything once I was in my room either. I had a view of a wall and the lobby. The cutest thing about this hotel was that they use actual keys. That was really unique. The hotel is also in walking distance to quite a few restaurants. I was able to get out a few times to get food and walked everywhere I went. read more

Okay, we loved this place and I will probably make it my go to when we visit Boston. When we checked in, the girl checking us in was super sweet and made the experience really fun. I can't remember her name, even though I asked later and described her as the girl with glitter and they knew exactly who I was talking about, she was lovely. Anyways, they have actual KEYS for your room, which I love. The rooms have super high ceilings and some of them have VHS players.. not that we had time to watch a whole movie but it was fun to pick one off the shelf and let it play while we got ready in the morning. Very comfortable and clean large room. The 2 queen size beds had 2 pairs of pillows of different firmness on each bed. Shower easy to work and had two types of sprays. The desk clerks were always friendly and helpful even during a rush of new guests. My gosh, the location is perfect. It's near every historical landmark. Quincy Market is across the street! We recently stayed 7 nights in a City View Room, which basically faced a back alley, at least it wasn't a cabin room. Pros: Bed and pillows were super comfortable. Location is great for site seeing, the North End is just blocks away, the Aquarium is also close, Quincy Market is basically across the street. For Boston the price per night couldn't be beat. Staff were really friendly and helpful giving advice on how to get someplace. Cons: Hotel is looking a little tired in the lobby. The Restautant/lounge is not part of the hotel. (BTW, do not order the Pasta Pesto!!) No coffee options or vending machines in the hotel itself. Housekeeping is by request only. Breakfast options close to hotel are pretty much nonexistent, except for the restaurant next to hotel (very limited offerings) or Dunkin Donuts a few blocks down. Most dining close to the hotel are Irish Pub style or the Quincy Market. Anything else is a bit of walk or you need to Uber. After awhile, both options just got old. The subway line outside the hotel is the Blue Line, you will need to make connections to see most of Boston. read more

We absolutely loved using the old-fashioned keys and then they had individual containers of soap and bar soap to use instead of the ones that were on the wall in the shower. This should be a 3 star hotel on par with the typical Marriott; it was clean, fairly priced, staff was pleasant, room was small but adequate, and so on. No hotel lobby shop or vending machines that I saw but a 7-11 next door open 24/7 meant I could do even better at fair market prices too. But this hotel is dated in ways that are not OK with me. It was a laugh to see a combo DVD/VCR in the room along with a stereo receiver. What wasn't a laugh was being handed a physical key to my room and spending the time I was checked in wondering if a previous guest had made a copy of the key and would come in to take my stuff. This is absolutely inappropriate and unacceptable in 2024; it wasn't OK when that DVD/VCR player was made. I have been a fairly frequent traveler for 20+ years and have only had a physical key twice before, both times at no-name hotels that a corporate travel person booked for me in an effort to save a few dollars. My husband and I stayed here in January right after NYE (great time to go to Boston since everyone has left the city to go skiing in Vermont!) and really loved our experience. The price point is great for the location. From the hotel, you can easily walk to Faneuil Hall, Quincy Market, the North End, Charles Street, etc. The staff was extremely attentive and helpful. I went to college in Boston and thought that I'd seen everything, but Tony at the front desk gave us all the hot "goss" on the hip things to do in the city. (I'm not going to tell you! You'll have to ask Tony ;)). One night the hairdryer started smelling like burning rubber and completely shut down. They immediately brought up a new hairdryer with two champagne splits for the inconvenience which was very thoughtful. Please be advised that the building is very old and the HVAC system is not subtle and acts as a white/brown noise machine. If you are someone who loves these noises, wonderful, if you don't (like me), bring very good ear plugs. We also ate dinner at the hotel restaurant, Joia. I am celiac with other pain in the "A" food allergies and our server Carmen and the kitchen went above and beyond to provide a wonderful meal for us. We'll definitely be back to peruse their VHS collection again! read more

A window doesn't mean a view Here is a review where "technically the truth" applies but you still feel you got taken. This hotel/inn is centrally located in the heart of downtown Boston. When my college freshman son wanted to visit Boston for Spring break, I happily agreed to pay for his time to discover our founding state. He found this place in the financial district. The lowest cost room was $200 (plus tax) and they correctly described that it had no windows. My first reaction was about safety. I told him that every room should have a window. So I told him to pay the extra ($30) for a windowed room. Here is where I failed to teach him to ask for more details. A window looking to another brick building is not what I thought of. I'd say 3.5 stars. Best selling point for this hotel was the price point. It was very affordable compared to other hotels in the area. It is conveniently located to so many great eateries and popular sites. The Quincy Market is literally right around the corner. They have a bunch of different food vendors and shops. This is perfect if you're traveling with a family who has different food cravings. Service was ok. Staff was approachable and friendly. However, one hotel employee wasn't very helpful when we were trying to setup our DVD/VHS player (YES! They have these vintage pieces in the room and plenty of DVD/VHS' to pick from lol). We called to get help and he just made some suggestions, then the next day, we stopped by the front desk to ask what were were doing wrong and he just gave the same suggestions. Not helpful. We were not a fan of this hotel not having a gym, the smell in our room (musky/humid), and our room window - It was facing the atrium (which was small and brought in very little light) - might be good for ppl who don't care too much for daylight. We were grateful for the restaurant attached to the hotel. It is called Joia Restaurant & Lounge. They offer great food and cocktails. We stayed here for one night, and loved how accessible this location was to a parking garage and Fanueil Hall. The staff was very friendly and helpful, giving us directions for parking (at a discounted rate). We loved how modern this boutique hotel is, using real room keys The room was clean and the bathroom was nice. We had a nice closet, complete with iron and ironing board. You can easily get to the orange and blue train lines which is a short ride to places such as: The airport North station (the hub which links to other train stations which are local and the commuter train which takes you outside of Boston) - this is also close to TD Garden Chinatown Downtown State This hotel is also a short walk to Faneuil Hall, Quincy Market, Italian District, the Aquarium, the Old Statehouse (my favorite building in Boston!!!!), Granary Graveyard, the Old North Church. We did a quick overnight stay on a layover in Boston. The hotel is clean, in a great location, and cozy. The employees we interacted with were friendly. We liked the ship-themed decor. The room was a good size, nice bathroom (hair dryer included), mini fridge, and we got a good night's sleep - no noise issues and the rooms seemed pretty well insulated. We just stayed at the hotel for three nights and would give it a very mediocre rating. It is in a great location if you are in Boston as a tourist, but the rooms are in great need of a renovation. They try to pass as funky but are more like depressing. The front desk was helpful, but we did not get our room cleaned when we requested it (it's not automatic), and it looks like the hotel may well be understaffed. I would not stay here for business. As a small hotel, it also lacks amenities, but does have a restaurant connected to it which we did not try. It's next to a 7-11, with all that implies, including a lot of dirt and trash. read more

Price very reasonable for downtown Boston. Could not find channel guide on TV. Not a big deal (we are not here to watch TV), but a bit irritating. Internet worked on MAC. Not on Chromebook. Place has potential, but design is shortsighted on a number of issues. Breakfast choices very limited on weekdays (eggs). Hard to understand this, as we could see people going out in the morning to Dunkin Donuts to get breakfast and bringing back to hotel. Not only inconvenient for customers, but seems like a easy place to make more money at little cost (e.g bacon, sausage, pancakes, toast, breakfast bar, etc.). Does not change sheet daily. That is ok. But also did not change towels or empty garbage. Weekend breakfast (Fri-Sun) has good selection. However, price is a bit steep ($55 for three of us). They also add 3.5% for kitchen staff. Friendly and helpful staff. We had room in basement. Room was clean and nice. But not nearly enough lighting in the room. read more

Harbor side Inn's location can't be beat. It's right next to Quincy Market, the Long Wharf, and a T stop. It's an easy walk to most of the historic sites, to anyplace in North End, etc., and it's a very quick trip to/from the airport. We received excellent service from the front desk. The rooms were impeccably clean. The mattresses are comfortable. And, the decor is kind of fun. It's funky enough to be interesting but not over the top into the weird. A few drawbacks: Rooms are kind of small. We asked to the biggest room available for one of the rooms in our group, and it got the job done but was still average-ish for hotel room sizes while the other rooms were a little smaller than average. They don't have coffee machines in the rooms, and while they have coffee service in the lobby, the hours for that are limited. And, they only have two elevators, and when we were there, one was out of order, so you might have to wait for an elevator. The hotel has some limitations, but if you're looking for a clean, comfortable hotel with good front desk service in the area and don't need more than that, it's a great option. read more

I was given lower class room type from what I booked, they tried to tell me it was the right one. I booked a King Atrium room for 4 nites. After getting into our room (513), we discovered the bed was a queen, which is also a smaller room. I called to the front desk, and Sara told me "our system shows that room has a king bed". Stunned, I hung up, looked at the bed again (definitely a queen), then called back. I was able to convince the person who answered this time that the bed definitely was not a king, but a queen. She then said she "could see what went wrong", then told me they were sold out for the night (we arrived after 8pm, so in other words, we could not get into the room type we booked & were charged for). I asked for the room to be discounted, and the room rate did get adjusted to one more appropriate for the type we were assigned. If a hotel cannot properly manage their reservations, that is a huge red flag for me. If you want to gamble on this place and book a higher class room type, then hope they put you in the right one upon arrival, then this is the place for you. If you tend to book the cheapest rooms available, then you may luck out and get assigned a better room when you arrive. As for me, I would never recommend such a hotel to anyone. The only positives I can offer is that the atrium room was clean and quiet, and the hotel location is great. read more

The hotel rooms are very spacious- at least the one we stayed in and the rooms have very comfy beds. I loved that the rooms had a very large mirror as well as windows. Literally across the street from both Quincy Market and The New England Aquarium! The location is perfect! As for the room. Pretty decent. Nice big bed, big windows, loved the brick. Shower and bathroom was fine. TV is a little outdated but who stays in their room to watch TV I guess. Staff was very friendly, even called me a cab. And parking was pretty cheap, they have a deal with a garage close by, was about $79 for 2 nights. Would def stay again! read more

You'll see exposed brick inside, combining historic features with modern stylish decor. There is an onsite bar lounge. The location is ideal for exploring downtown Boston. We were walking distance from shops, restaurants and the harbor. Rooms are ample sized and include a safe for valuables, a small fridge, and free WiFi. I was originally supposed to stay at a hotel in Medford but something happened with my reservation. Nonetheless, I was able to book this hotel on the way to Boston (only 4 hours before my arrival!!). I did not check in until 11 but it went very smoothly. The room was honestly great. We stayed in a queen room with a view of the atrium. Although there wasn't anything to view, the room itself was very spacious and the mirror was HUGE. The bathroom was also nice, I loved the newer shower design. The only downfall about the room was that the shower itself was pretty small and the towels were a little rough. The lounge area closes after they serve coffee/tea in the AM (7am-10am). Overall, it was a great stay. Right in the heart of the city. SOOO close to all the major attractions. I highly recommend this hotel. read more

This hotel was recommended by the company I visited during a recent 5 day business trip in Boston, likely because it's in walking distance on State St. Moreover, it's fairly close to Logan int'l airport and directly in front of a T (subway) stop. Harborside's pre-arrival communication was awful. I had to call twice to obtain an email receipt/confirmation, each time I was made to feel like I was inconveniencing them. At first glance, this warehouse turned "boutique" hotel, with a semi-contemporary lobby, appears to be a good find. Check-in was relatively painless until I found out: A) their idea of a quiet room was $229+tax per night for a small spot immediately next to the elevator with huge mirror (to make it look bigger) and terrible window views (not related to mirror). Of what? Brick walls and other suckers suffering the same "quiet" fate on lower floors. It was also so dark, I felt like I was squinting by candlelight even with full lights on. B) "boutique" meant no amenities. Gym? No. Pool? No. Robes? No. Coffee pot in room? No. Coffee in lobby? No. USB charging ports? No. Ice machine? 1 in the basement. Elevator? 1 (with 1 out of order). WiFi was spotty and had to be reset every 24 hours. My room was fairly clean thanks to the hardworking housekeeping staff. Harborside did store my bags after checkout which was nice. I discovered I paid the same price as my coworker but she got windows with views of the city. Take home point: if you're looking for value and familiar amenities, look elsewhere; if you're low maintenance and just looking for a clean bed, Harborside will work. read more

Recently stayed for 3 nights (an adult and teenager). This hotel was less expensive than most in that area but a great value. We had a king city view room. The room was very clean. When we first walked in, the air was off so it was a little musty. We turned on the air, went to dinner and when we returned it was great. There is a mini fridge in the room which was nice. I do wish there was a microwave to heat up leftovers. There was plenty of space for 2 and the room included a small table and little sofa (I think it could be pulled out but we didnt try). There is a great video library to use but if you have one of the newer tvs, which we did, the connections with the DVD player are not compatible so you can't take advantage of the library. As some mentioned, there is no bottled water but there was a large pitcher of lemon water with cups available in the lobby. We walked to the Golden Goose market near by and got waters and such to have in the room. The staff is wonderful! Very nice and helpful. It is not a big hotel with tons of amenities but reviews and their website make that clear so there shouldn't be a surprise and in return, you get a nice clean place to stay at a competitive price for the area. The attached restaurant was fabulous! Amazing location- we walked almost everywhere we wanted to go but there is a t station outside and ubers are easy to get.
