I'm a fan a this beautifully bizarre little bar. Complete with a picnic table (and umbrella!) just to the right of the entrance, a projector that screens seemingly random films in the back, and an outside patio area, how could I not be? This past Saturday I met a couple of friends here for a couple of rounds of drinks, and it provided colorful refuge from the gray day. Starting out with a mango chili margarita, which I spotted on their "fancy drink" list, it was tackily served in a plastic "glass-" the perfect touch! We then shared an order of the nachos, which would have been exactly like those I ate at swim meets in the 1980's and 1990's had it not been for the chopped tomato, onion, and pepper that sprinkled the liquid cheese. Mmm... My second round consisted of their $7 tequila/Tecate deal, which was a good way to go out. And I'd definitely go back! read more

Hipsters galore - barf. I've graduated from that phase of my life. I do, however, live around the corner; and this past Saturday while my roommate was in the shower, I really had to take a piss--so bad that my vision was blurred--so I ran to Happyfun, used their restroom (admittedly, decent) and out of sheer politeness, ordered an IPA. It was somewhat early, the hipsters weren't out yet--another words, the place was tolerable. When it's low key, it's an OK venue. A little too ramshackle for me, but I do love the fact that they play old films and cartoons. Anyway, I ended up ordering a few IPA's that night and even bought an out-of-town hipster that I briefly struck a conversation with at the bar a beer. She had ordered the cheapest beer there--one of those godawful Mexican beers. Somehow my bill came to $40. I didn't call them out on it because by that time the place was swamped with hipsters and I wanted to get the hell out. The point of the story is that though the place appears cheap, they will try to pull a few fast ones. Be razor sharp and alert; especially if you don't look the hipster part. I think that's when the bartenders discriminate/judge. The ironic thing is though it's definitely not my favorite place in the world, I am naturally a generous tipper and tipped enough that each bartender could have bought a new t-shirt at Beacon's Closet. No need to be greedy I got enough to feed the needy. read more

I always try to be supportive of LGBT safe spaces but in the middle of December my partner and I couldnt stay past one beer due to the thick, humid air. Maybe it was a bad night, but it reminded me of the bathrooms at Penn Station during Pride. Prices were reasonable, and I'm curious as to how their mixed drinks taste. I really, really want to like this place. The location is bomb, and the vibes are nice. BUT...the entire bar smelled like dirty socks. Either I was having a stroke, someone next door had died and left a pile of wet laundry for his poor landlord, or the bartender wasn't aware that showers are a thing that people do. By no means am I a neat freak or a clean freak or any kind of freak save for in the bedroom, but I'm a little freaked out by the stench of feet when I'm just trynna drink my shitty beer. Happyfun Hideaway is a great little Brooklyn bar. Usually full of young locals. It's a great place to pregame with your friends before going out or if you want to just chill for the night. It's not the place you go to go dancing but it doesn't try to be. The inside is decorated like a trendy tropical hideaway. Lots of pink neon signage paired with a lot of foliage. There's even a picnic table with an umbrella inside. That's what I call commitment to a theme. There's also an outside garden for when it's warmer out. Happyfun is also super inexpensive! Drinks are so cheap compared to most NY bar standards. I don't think I have ever spent more than $20 there. They always have a $6 PBR and shot special going on making it a great place to pregame and save money before hitting up the rest of your bar list for the night. I can't forget to mention how nice the staff is. The bartender always makes sure he gets to serve everyone at the bar. Definitely hit up Happyfun Hideaway whenever you get the chance! read more

Yes, there are hipsters here. Yes, sometimes it smells weird. But look, drinks are pretty damn affordable for rapidly gentrifying Brooklyn, the back patio during warmer times and off-peak hours is WONDERFUL, and while I've had to roll my eyes while eavesdropping on conversation, I've had some pretty fantastic run-ins with random people passing through. Give it a shot, but if you see that it's too crowded, make like Bonnie Tyler and Turn Around. read more

Love this place and wished I lived closer! Chili Mango margarita and the Dark n Stormy are my favorites. Always cute and friendly bartenders and if you need a snack you have to get the frito pie, be sure to let it cool down first and don't drunkenly burn your mouth like I did - ha! I know that I can always come here for a great time with my partner and friend group. Very trans friendly! A group of us were in Bushwick visiting our two friends who were selling jewelry at the flea market on Charles Pl. We decided to have a drink and chat after they closed up shop for the day and the first bar we came across was Happyfun Hideaway. Atmosphere: Divey, but has a very cute back area. Service: Meh. Touch and go. Fare: The food is mediocre and overpriced. You basically have standard American concession snacks for a premium price. Unfortunately, I happened to be starving, so I ordered a corn dog, which took forever to be warmed up. When it was finally ready *and I saw the bartender take it out of the toaster oven*, he didn't bother to notify me even though I was at the table next to the bar. I had to go over and ask him about it. And well- it tasted like a frozen corn dog. Nothing special. The cocktails were much better- I had the dark and stormy, which was flavorful and strong. My friends stuck to the happy hour specials. One random cool thing that did happen while I was there: I had an interesting conversation with a skinny bloke who sat at the bar reading an Angela Davis book about the prion industrial complex. I'm a fan of this place. It's a gay, hipster bar with the crowd and ambiance to match. I'm certainly not a hipster, but I found it to be fun. Drinks are priced well and fair for the area and definitely a good change from the Manhattan gay bars. It's definitely a "hang out bar," not something you go to if you expect to dance. Cute little gay bar. It's laid back. As much dive vibe it gives off, people there in general are residents of the neighborhood that are catching up in their own little circles. I wish it were a little more relaxed than it is and it'd probably make me want to go back there more often. I love this bar. It's trashy, divey, and has fun drinks, all whilst weird videos play from a projector onto the back wall. I've luckily only been here once where it was too crowded for my preferences. Usually when I go, it's not too crowded, so perhaps I'm just lucky whenever I go. Bartenders have also always been super friendly to me, so that's a definite plus in my book. Worth checking out if you happen to be in the area! read more

Ive been here before and had a good time but this experience i recently had (2 weeks ago?) was so bad i had to share my review... i came out because friends invited me as they were performing there that night... i got there around 2am and the bar was half full The bartender would not serve us..I dont know if they are racist or have something against black queer folk but the bar wasnt that crowded (it was a week night) and she would not look our way to give us a drink. normally i woulda walked right out.. but i was there to support my friends art and no racist bartender was gonna stop that. I waited and waited even moved close to the bartender and she would not serve. I asked my white friend to order our drinks and she IMMEDIATELY served them no questions asked...I never had this experience before there but this night left a bad taste in my mouth and we will not return as long as this person works there. the bartender was Asian and i was told her name is "Green" or "Gream" not sure of the exact spelling but if u are black and she serves ur drink make sure it presealed and not a mixed drink i got the vibes she would spit in it or worse. i would have spoke to a manager but i believe she is the manager so that says ALOT... I was introduced to this spot as a safe place for queer folk and POC but i guess due to gentrification in the area their mission has changed... this bartender named "Green" was really bad....maybe she didnt speak english? even so thats no excuse for treating queers/blacks as less than human anyway.. read more

We walked into this bar by accident while looking for Birdy's (yeah yeah, I know, Birdy's has a big-ass neon sign outside, we're dumb yeah yeah). Typical dingy divey bar. Fellow Yelpers, I was very rudely removed from the premises by an extremely verbally aggressive middle aged man swearing blindly at me and driving my wife to tears. Happyfun Hideaway was the perfect place for my boyfriend's surprise birthday party! The bar let me put balloons and steamers. Eli the bartender was so sweet. He got me a ladder and tape to decorate. He stored my cake and birthday supplies for me also! And then when it was time to blow candles, Simon another gentleman who worked there helped me get my cake and silverware for the birthday boy! I literally only yelp when someone at an establishment is completely inhospitable. Really mean fellow with a beard just now didn't greet us, didn't respond when I said hi, huffed and directed me to read a chalk board when I asked what the specials were, shamed and lectured my friend for touching the outside of some decorative garnish receptacle when she was saying it was cute and asking what it is for, something she only did because she was nervously trying to break the ice of hostility and establish some kind of human rapport. In the end he asked what we would like but I asked his name first and he rolled his eyes and insisted that I just tell him what I would like. We got up and left. Fantastic low-key neighborhood hangout bar. Warm unpretentious ramshackle vibe, wonderfully strange selection of movies playing silently on a couple screens, super friendly bartenders (no surprise seeing as I think it's the same owners as Secret Project Robot), cheap drinks, tasty (vegetarian) snacks, cozy backyard with plenty of seating, a pinball machine, great eclectic not-too-loud music. Open nice and late (except Sunday, when they close at midnight). Crowd is mostly small groups of friends, pleasantly chatty loners, Silent Barn peeps having a meeting over drinks, that sort of thing. Really easy to meet people here. In short, my favorite Bushwick bar. If you see a guy with Waldo glasses and a big black beard working on his laptop (he'll be the only one there doing that, probably) and drinking Pacifico, come say hi. read more

Crowded, shitty service and zero professionalism. The only thing good is the music. I have been here about three or four times for various dope QPOC DJs and artists. Their shows I have always enjoyed but the crowd and bar service leaves much to the imagination. Constant shoving and lack of spacial awareness on the part of the crowd--I have lost many a drink in the herd sans apology. Bartenders barely looked at me. Twice I have ordered from a bald headed bartender who consistently serves attitude. The first time I asked for an old fashioned and got a watery mess. I asked for a better made drink which the bartender begrudgingly prepared ("I'm pretty sure there's alcohol in there..."). The next time I came I asked for a rum punch: "I don't know what that is. Do you mean gay juice?" I informed the staff that the service was subpar and was in so many words told to kick rocks. I regrettably had to leave zero tip, only to find a $13 tip added to my $22 bill the next day. I tried to call the bar back and reached some rando named Phyllis who asked me to leave a message. I don't know who runs this gentrified establishment but they clearly have no respect for their customers and I recommend you give your service to a true local bar where bartenders acknowledge you and treat you with dignity. read more

Spent a night happily drinking champagne out of a mini bottle with a straw. So thankful not to be surrounded by any stem wine glass snobs who describe themselves as "living the dream" and mean it. This bar belongs on a little island in Thailand. So cute. read more
