I went on a pretty chill night so I can only speak to that! But it's a cute dive bar, bartenders are nice, people are friendly. There were two fireplaces that were actually warm! Only weird thing was that the bouncer kind of harshly went in on a couple with a dog who I guess they said was a service animal and told them to go outside. The couple seemed overwhelmed and knocked over their chair and were dropping their things as they were trying to rush out to the back with their dog. I felt so bad! I think they may have been autistic or had something going on. Their dog was sweet but she was excitable. I know because I asked to pet her. I think the bouncer didn't believe she was a service animal and may have been irritated that they brought her (they're not legally allowed to ask for proof that the animal is a service animal). Very chill vibe at Metropolitan. I ended up there late on a Tuesday with a friend. Bartenders were nice and drinks were so cheap-- $10 for two drinks? It was karaoke night which I personally dont partake in but is fun to watch. Mostly queer crowd here so very welcoming and accepting of all! They also have a pool table if you are into that. The bathrooms were a bit uncomfy mostly because the stall is so tiny (and i say that as a petite person). Don't know if I'd actively choose this bar myself on a night out but most of the people i met here were regulars so definitely a popular spot read more

This is a pretty awesome gay club in Brooklyn and I've been here a couple of times because I like going to gay clubs for all the attention that my body gets me. so they have a cover now? OK. Since this is new, or at least I don't remember there ever being one, I asked what the cover was for and they said "the barbecue and to pay the performers." There were no performers. There was no opt-out option if you just wanted to have a drink at the bar. The bbq was a basic set-up in their pretty (and pretty filthy) back courtyard, littered with rotten leaves and bird feathers--not on the ground, but on the tables themselves. Don't expect too much. But they wouldn't serve me any food unless I tipped them first. "We usually expect a tip," the woman behind the bbq table said, sternly, staring down at my empty plate making such a simple encounter an awkward one. First of all, my boyfriend had already tipped for the both of us (he was the one with the cash) and had told her so. Secondly, sweetheart, that's not how tips work, lmao. You provide the service (that we had apparently already paid for with the cover??) FIRST. Jesus... In happier news, the bar doesn't smell like a bottle of bleach just vomited anymore, so I guess that's good, but there weren't many people there. I liked that they played fun '80s music that wasn't pretentious. I wish it was cleaner, I wish the staff was a little sprightlier and a little more focused, and I preferred it without a cover, since there are literally 6,000 other bars within walking distance with better cocktails that don't charge covers (they play music too.) Sometimes, I really really miss TNT. They stamp your wrist for some reason, like this is Tunnel in 1998. The blue ink from their sloppy stamp stained all my clothes. They could have warned me? It's a nice, verdant, backyard that always feels dreamy, and I'm glad they survived the pandemic, but it's way past time for something better to come around. read more

This is literally the worse gay bar or club I ever been to in my entire life. When I went they had no working sinks,I think also no working toilets. The bartender named "Daniel" was EXTREMELY rude to me,VERY,I asked him why me and my friend were being asked to give up our seats when there were other patrons who were not asked to do so, being it was my first time there I did not understand,he answered in a very nasty shady catty mean way saying,"cause honey,life is unfair and it's about to be unfair for you now!",and he snatched the coaster from where it was infront of me. I responded with,"Actually life is very fair for me,may I please speak to your manager",He goes gets the manager,Steven McEnrue,and Daniel (the bartender proceeds to misgender me and starts to say,"She is mad because I told her," I corrected him and said,"Excuse me sir,I'm a he" since I am biologically born male I'm just extremely feminine (gender queer/non conforming),Steven,the manager proceeds to yell at me in a nasty horrible way saying,"Okay mister sister!","I said,excuse me?" He literally responded with,"You heard me bitch!" I have never in my life been more insulted, humiliated and disrespected by such low budget trashy cheap people in my entire life. It gets better,I tried contacting someone in a higher position to tell them the situation,I called,I emailed,I sent Facebook and Instagram messages,guess who runs all these things? Steven McEnrue and Daniel the bartender,that's why they feel they can do whatever they want to anyone,because they really feel they'll get away with it. I had to file a F.O.I.L. and for some reason I was unable to contact the owners,I will try again. This place is conveniently located near the metro stop. There wasn't a cover when we went, but that may be because it was very late at night. There was a little drag, and definitely a few dancers around. Decently crowded near the stage, but plenty of room to spread out. The music was alright, there were a few pop songs (think Nicki Minaj, ABBA, Rihanna, etc) songs thrown in every once in a while but I didn't recognize most of the music. read more

If I had no sense of smell, this would probably be a 4-star review. Nice bartenders, reasonable beer prices, decent selection, laid back vibe...all positives in my book. But the smell, my heavens the smell. Imagine this: A flock of vultures is sitting on a mountain of dead sea cows that have been in 90 degree heat for a week and on top of that is a truck load of garlic, and this is sitting under a stand of gingko trees (in full bloom), surrounded by blooming Amorphophallus Titanum plants and someone has thrown 400 rotten durian fruits on top of the sea cows and this is all sitting downwind from a pig farm. This is what I compare the singular scent in this establishment to. Walking in I could barely control my gag reflex; it makes the dive bars I hung out in college smell like a lavendar-scented grandmother. If you can get past the smell, I say go for it. read more

The bouncer was like someone from the past - who doesn't exhibit a sort of kindness or empathy toward other humans something we seldom see since the covid 19 pandemic where people are just joyous and appreciative to be amongst other people. Nasty would be an understatement. We had people with us who had international licenses and instead of even talking with us she saw red and literally had a full break down. I visit this bar once in a blue moon but no longer. The bartender on Monday evening was not only rude as hell but I'm pretty sure he was racist. Upon arrival to the bar, he served the client next to me but then turned the other way as if I didn't exist. Then, he started talking to someone else at the other right side of the bar. Once he finally decided to do his job and come over and serve me. He was dismissive af. He started making my drink and began talking to the first person he was talking to when he ignored me the first time... and even realized it and told him to let him finish making my drink. When it came time for him to give me the check, he threw it down on the counter so hard that the pen flew on the floor. I asked him what his problem was, to which, he replied, what was wrong with me. Absolutely nothing was wrong with me and I remained calm, in fact, I even tipped appropriately. The problem with these queer bars these days is they aren't safe spaces. People like GREGORY ruin things for all of us. People like GREGORY shouldn't work at queer bars or spaces. People like GREGORY need serious training and help! The drinks aren't pricey, which is great. With each drink, they gave us a ticket for free BBQ outside, which included either a free burger or hotdog. The cheeseburgers were pretty decent and by giving a ticket per drink, you wouldn't get completely plastered if you wanted to stay on the safe side. The staff members are super nice and the bartender was awesome. The inside is dark but there is a pool table and some arcade games like Pacman. Outdoors was really cute but sadly, it had been raining so it was just wet every where and muggy. Inside, it was sort of on the cold side. Pretty much everyone comes here re one can cool off in between dancing to your favorite songs. During early evenings in the summer, sometimes movies are shown in the back patio. If you want to come to chill, it is best to get here before 9pm. However, the full swing dance (and flrting/hooking up)party starts around 11/1130 pm. I did a search on bars with pool tables. I wanted to play pool and i wanted to drink but i didnt want to pay pool hall prices. I found the Metropolitan. I was stoked since it was walking distance from my mothers house. My (then) boyfriend and I took a walk and ended up at the bar on two for one night. We had to leave and come back because they didnt accept credi cards (womp womp) but had no problem at all when we returned. I honestly didnt know it was a gay bar until much much later. It was always empty when i went. A good friend of mine introduced me to Stephen who is quite possibly the most adorable ball of energy in Brooklyn. Hes fun to be around and an excellent Mixologist. The juke box was awesome and its got a divey feel to it. The bathrooms are a little scary but thats probably because of all the writing on the walls. they lost a star for not taking credit cards (boo) read more

The bathrooms are unisex meaning 2 stalls one with a man peeing in a urinal and the other with a woman.. they were disgusting, but still nothing to warrant a bad review. This is one of the most regularly mixed crowd gay bar I've ever been to in NYC. I have been coming here for years and I love it. It is one of the reasons I consider moving to Brooklyn. Its a very inclusive place and welcomes all; the reviews that say otherwise are from people who have blatantly started causing trouble and assaulting the staff, resulting in them getting taken out by force to avoid a more violent and dangerous situation. I have lived in this neighborhood now for 9 years, I've seen LOTS of places come and go. Metropolitan Bar, however, is still here, as it has remained a consistent spot for friends, fun, and occasional frolic. The staff is always welcoming and friendly. The patrons can be social, or sometimes stand-offish, which is kinda like every other LGBT place ever. I appreciate the efforts the management makes to try new things, new theme nights, switch-up the decor from time to time. Sometimes things work, sometimes they don't. But overall I'm grateful for this gem at the Lorimer stop. Given the impending L shutdown, I look forward to supporting this community establishment and waiting out the Manhattan exile with the cool customers, cheap drinks, great music. For those looking to try it out - I HIGHLY recommend any Sunday afternoon between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Those Sunday afternoon BBQs are a beloved institution and part of what makes this spot so much fun. read more

So this is my neighborhood gay bar, and it's alright. Brandon is the only bartender that's ever been nice to me and the rest are rude and take ages to make drinks. They seem to cater to regulars and have full conversations while others sit back and wait. The crowd is pretty much like every other bar and the backyard is nice. Stay away from the older bartender with the white/gray beard and hair, he is always incredibly rude and takes his time helping you. If the owners see this, you're pretty much the only gay bar in BK now, maybe try and make the smell go away? Also some general upkeep would be nice, i.e. the slowly deteriorating backyard and the pretty much destroyed bathrooms. read more

Worst Karaoke Night, Best Bartender I rarely write reviews, but this place left a lasting impression. As a world traveler and karaoke connoisseur, I have been to over 40 karaoke bars around the world, & I'm sorry to say this place took the cake for #1 worst, mostly due to the KJ (Karaoke DJ) on 5/24/22. The KJ was disorganized, with no displayed list of singers on deck & all the request slips scattered around his table. It took us **3 hrs to sing one song**, despite getting there early, and it became clear that unless you personally knew the KJ, your odds of singing were slim to none, with the KJ changing the order & giving preference to his friends and roommate--I get it, it happens, but when it happens to that extent, it really does not make newcomers feel welcome or respected. When my friend asked roughly how long the list was, the KJ simply replied, "Are you gonna sign up or not?" We watched people walk in and/or sign up hours after us and sing--some 2 or 3 times! In the end, my friend who signed up 45 minutes after me got to sing, and it was only after telling the KJ this that he let me sing. To top it all off, he was cutting songs short for the last hour, and I could see his cursor constantly popping up on my screen, hovering over the pause button as I was trying to sing, and then he cut the music mid-song... after waiting 3 hours!! We definitely did not feel respected or like coming back. Plus, it doesn't work as a business model, making people wait 3 hrs to sing, because I don't like to drink too much before singing, so it deterred me from ordering more drinks... but maybe I'm the exception in that. As for the talent in this place, if that matters to anyone, the average quality of singing was significantly lower than any other place I've been, with maybe only 3 people singing on pitch all night. Now, for a bit of a silver lining: the handsome blonde/redheaded (it was dark) bartender with the scruff was absolutely amazing. He had the kindest smile and a very welcoming demeanor. We then overheard him standing up for a customer by sternly cutting off another customer who was getting handsy, all while remaining calm and respectful. He also mentioned that the "usual" KJ is more organized and returns next week, so hopefully it is usually better, but it's unfortunate that my first visit was enough to deter me from ever returning. read more

If you're looking for a CLASSIC gay dive bar with affordable drinks and decent music, you've found it. However, don't expect clean bathrooms or anything super creative behind the bar. My friends and I popped into Metropolitan last night for some quick drinks and dancing, and we were not disappointed. The music and DJ were on point. Big variety of tunes from pop to disco to rock and all really well mixed. Then there were the drinks, we paid only $14 for a HUGE glass of white wine, a rum and coke, and a deliciously refreshing club soda. That's a pretty decent deal considering Metropolitan being in one of the most expensive cities in the world. But THE BATHROOMS. We've gotta talk about the bathrooms because they were gross. Not just dirty but seemingly beyond repair. The stalls were TINY (probably in an attempt to prevent multiple people sharing a stall), but that meant that my arms couldn't help touch parts of the walls which were wet from who-knows-what. And then there were the floors which were soaked. :-( Listen, I get it, it's a busy, Friday night, but these bathrooms need to be gutted and reconfigured. Otherwise, this place is a great stop in a night of bar hopping, and I will most definitely be back. read more

First time here! Great place. Wish I could give them 100+ stars! I was here with a friend & when he got up to go to the RR a random guy was trying to kiss me... Garry noticed it and asked me if I wanted the guy kicked out... I don't like to give anyone trouble so I said "no" but he clearly noticed I was upset. Right away, without me asking, told me he'd ask this guy to leave the club. I even told him not to worry because I'm not drama. Needless to say, Garry REFUSED to allow me leave and kicked this Individual out... overall i was super happy with their service and their attentiveness to me.
