I like it overall! 3.5-4.5. General Tso's chicken is good and garlicky, with a spicy zip. Wonton soup is good. Almond boneless chicken (ABC) is double fried and crispy crunchy and has an addictive brown gravy that makes it similar to comfort food from the South. (It has no token almonds, but I do not miss them). Unlike some places, they don't bed the ABC on crispy iceberg lettuce- I miss it sometimes (but I also get how iceberg lettuce goes bad quickly and doesn't really work with leftovers). I did not like or enjoy: chicken chow mein. I have been spoiled by the quality of Chow mein at Nepalese/ Indian places around Ann Arbor and perhaps I am just used to that more. Did not like the soft/thicker noodle type they use here- but that might just be my preference. I'm also not a fried foods person or big into Americanized Chinese food to begin with -- if you are, this place may be just your ticket. Service was also great. Wow. I can't say enough good about Happy Wok! It was incredible! They have an expansive menu including a gluten free menu and a vegan menu. My husband got shrimp fried rice and General Tso's chicken wings and absolutely loved them. The wings were crispy and very flavorful and the shrimp fried rice was also full of flavor. I ordered off the vegan menu and opted for the General Tso's Bean Curd. It was 10/10 I could not be happier! Not only was it so flavorful and delicious, but the portion was huge! Service was incredible too. The staff were super nice and helpful, the food was ready quickly, and it was super fresh. The restaurant was clean and inviting. That exceptional customer focus is tops on my list. Still the best Chinese food in Ann Arbor and I have been here almost 50 years, since college, so I've tried many Chinese restaurants in the area. We tried Happy Wok for the first time yesterday and were pleasantly surprised given how long it has taken us to vary our routine from Hot Pot Chen which is down the street. Our order consisted of steamed vegetable dumplings (which were quite good) fried pork dumplings (which were deep fried which is not my favorite way to prepare dumplings, I prefer pan fried) Broccoli Chicken which was good and Hunan Chicken which was also good. We ordered our food online and it was ready when promised. The store itself is geared towards take -out which I suspect is almost all of their business but there are a couple of tables in case someone wanted to eat in house. For an in-house dining experience I would recommend someplace else. While this isn't the absolute best Chinese food we've ever had (Ann Arbor is sadly lacking in a diversity of great Chinese food which is odd given the significant number of Chinese students attending the many nearby universities) it certainly holds its own for a Chinese/American take-out experience. We will be back and look forward to trying many other dishes which they offer. read more

I have lived in A2 for two years now and thought I had tried and been disappointed by every Chinese restaurant. Happy Wok somehow escaped me. I thought I'd give it a try and ordered lunch to go. When I walked in I was struck at how clean and neat this restaurant was. I was greeted by a friendly man who promptly checked on my order. My food was piping hot and in very secure packaging. My egg roll was so flavorful with a crispy rice wrapper and lots of vegetables, fried rice was very flavorful and tasty and last the Gen Tso chicken was fabulous!! It's a small place but there are a few tables inside where you can sit down for quick lunch with friends. We selected this place for a casual ladies lunch gathering for catching up. I've been going to Happy Wok for my Chinese takeout for the better part of 5 years (it helps that I used to live there), and I've gotta say, they should win awards for consistent quality. In that entire time, I've been able to have such a uniform experience that I've been away for a year and a half and come back to EXACTLY what I've come to love about it. Since I've been going to Happy Wok, I've essentially only gotten two dishes: their Fried Rice and Lo Mein. Both are good but generally I float toward the Chicken Fried Rice, and even to this day if I'm going to have Chicken Fried Rice in Michigan, I'll do my best to find myself in Ann Arbor to arrange a pickup of Happy Wok Chicken Fried Rice. I'm pretty sure they have the usual fare that you'd expect from a Chinese restaurant, but seriously I stick to my guns once I find a dish I like. My one complaint is that even when ordering the dish "extra spicy", it still comes in under what I'd like as a spice enthusiast. Some basics: There's a good amount of parking in their strip-mall style parking lot (it's a one way, so just be mindful of that). Location is in a fairly convenient spot along Stadium on the west side of Ann Arbor as well. The physical footprint of the restaurant is on the smaller side, but you should easily be able to find seating for a small group (under 5). Usually the noodle/rice entrees can come in a small or large size; small is easily enough for one meal, and large is basically a meal for two people. All in all, I'd say Happy Wok is one Chinese restaurant in Ann Arbor you shouldn't skip, they excel at making quality meals quickly and consistently. read more

I hate to leave a low star review, but this place's food was terrible. There was no one in the restaurant when we walked in and when we tried to call ahead we got stuck with 5 minutes of hold music. The chicken on a stick/ teriyaki chicken was off. It was either bad chicken or just incredibly overdone... something. We had to throw it away. My kids didn't like it either. I appreciated that they had the optional brown rice, which is a better option than white. I got the steamed rice with steamed chicken and mixed veggies. It comes with a soy/ garlic sauce on the side. I've never had "bad" soy soy sauce before, and I can't describe the flavor, but it just wasn't very good. I have driven past this place for years and finally went there last Saturday night for the first time. We ordered a large egg drop soup, an egg roll, Vegetable Egg Fu Young and Kung Pau Shrimp and it was to be ready to be picked up in fifteen minutes. We picked up the order and took it home. When we opened it up, the soup was great, the egg roll was OK, the Egg Fu Young was very good and the Kung Fu Shrimp was something else. I called the restaurant to tell them about the mistake and the owner listened to my story, said "Sorry" and hung up. This was a test run. I doubt we will return. "Sorry!" Tried Happy Work because I had a GrubHub coupon. Definitely out of my norm, but had to spend over a certain dollar amount and wanted to try a couple things. I'll start by saying, prices are decent and there is a pretty big menu. The veggie spring roll is excellent. The only reasons why they are getting three stars instead of two. Veggie sushi is a hard pass. I've made veggie sushi rolls better at home. The rolls were mostly rice and pretty tasteless. I eat veggie rolls all the time and, although the price was great, not worth it. I was torn between the tofu and veggie with peanut sauce and the tofu red curry. I'm sad to say I opted for the curry. It's just "off". Not sure what kind of paste/seasoning was used, but it wasn't very good. There was a lot of tofu, which I appreciate, but not sure I'll be revisiting my leftovers. read more

I went out to their website and found that they had Laksa Noodles with Shrimp... man, I was excited. So I placed take-away/carry out/to-go order... I order the Laksa Noodles with Shrimp and Beef Mongolian. The guy told me 15 minutes and it'd be ready. Happy Wok is located right across Big George, the parking lot is one way street... I had to pull into the parking lot twice, because the restaurant's sign is kinda hidden as you drive on the one-way street. It was around 1:30 pm on Friday, so I expected the restaurant to be busy, to my surprise, the place was empty... my order was waiting, I paid and headed back home. I took a large empty bowl, placed the noodles and poured the broth over it. The smell was excellent and I took my first bite... sadly I was disappointed... it didn't taste the same as the one in Singapore... I know I know, you can't compare dishes from respective motherlands in another country... Why I ordered Beef Mongolian I don't know... it seems I always order food in pairs. The dish came in a single carryout box, half was filled with pork fried rice along with Beef Mongolian... there were more onions then slices of beef... but for $5.50 lunch combo with egg roll, one can't complain. I threw all $13 of their lunch in the trash. A friend brought me take out. The oil the egg rolls were fried in was rancid. Smelled terrible when I opened up the bag. In addition, the oil wasn't hot enough to actually fry them. The wraps were slimy with the rancid oil. The mu shu vegetables weren't rancid, and I liked that the cabbage was sliced a good size and there was plenty of broccoli. Yet there was something wrong with the sauce. It didn't taste salty, yet my tongue and gums are as sore as if I'd eaten a whole bag of extremely salty chips. I only had 3 bites too. Ordered online from Happy Work's website and got our food in about half an hour (shortly before the dinner rush on a Saturday night). We were greeted at the restaurant by a friendly young girl, presumably the owner's daughter? Anyway, here's what we got: - Wonton egg drop soup: Edible, nothing terribly off about it, but also nothing to write home about. But I mean, it's just soup, and I won't rate a takeout place by its soup... - Curry chicken (hot) w/shrimp fried rice: This was pretty good, although like every other experience I've had with curry chicken, it was slightly bland. I wonder if this is just how curry chicken is supposed to taste. It tasted better the next day though! The fried rice was also good and had a decent amount of shrimp in it. - Singapore noodles (hot): These were significantly spicier than the curry chicken, and they were tasty! I'm tempted to order this every time I eat here. The portions were decent for the price, and my boyfriend and I had plenty of leftovers. It wasn't obvious where the Malaysian/Thai/Japanese/etc. dishes were on the menu when I ordered online, but I am curious now, especially if any of the items are as good as the Singapore noodles. In any case, Happy Wok will be my go-to takeout Chinese spot over on this side of town. [07/11/14]: I've tried more dishes since then, and they've mostly all been good. The Empress Chicken was tasty in small quantities but got sickly sweet after a while. The curry samosas are made with wonton wrappers and kind of small, but I got 8 instead of the 6 listed on the menu, and the filling was flavorful. The cha(r) kway teow was soooooooooooooooooo good... and greasy for when you're craving the lard. It was a nice combo of sweet & salty with just a hint of spice. Gah. I could eat the whole order myself in one sitting, but then I'd feel bad because I KNOW it's unhealthy. On one of my many trips to Michigan this summer, I had a craving for some Chinese food. I went to trusty Yelp and found this place. It's a small place, but that didn't stop me from walking inside and placing an order. The staff was very friendly and helped me make my decision. The place was clean and yes, fluffy people friendly. I ended up placing my order to go because I was just exhausted from driving that day. The first bite of my meal was all I needed to get hooked. The egg roll was crispy and a stuffed full of yummy goodness. I ordered the chicken chop suey and it was fantastic. The chicken was soft and not hard like some places. I'm disappointed. Went back for the first time since they remodeled in the Fall, 2022. New management, new menu missing the diverse Malaysian and Indonesian items, fewer combos, prices up about 15-20%, money spent on the remodel could have been better spent on a chef that knows how to stir fry onions (undercooked and pungent) than on decor with all the warmth of a dentist's office. I ordered my old favorite, Curry Chicken (which I no longer see as a Dinner Combo on the menu). What I got was salty and thin Cantonese-style sauce, chicken was generous but pale white, not the aromatic yellow-green of the old chicken curry. No egg rolls or hot and sour soup option for the combo anymore. Now it's just a pair of small, sad spring rolls. Fried rice tasted slightly fermented, but that could have been the soy sauce I added. Was going to try them again but got an answering machine when I called. I hate to make generalizations from a single data point, but it's obviously not the same restaurant anymore. I called and the person I spoke with properly and reasonably offered me a refund. 30 minutes later, at almost 11:00pm, I get a totally unexpected call from the manager. It got bizarre. After asking me if I received a refund, he began yelling at me that I shouldn't have received a full refund for the restaurant's incorrect order. I tried to respond, but he insisted on talking over me. What in the world? You got the order wrong. You delivered it late. Food was cold. And then after very reasonably doing the right thing and refunding me, you then decide to gratuitously call a regular customer and pick a fight? Huh? But then he said something terrible: that he was going to make the clerk pay for the refund out of her own pocket. In other words, wage theft. If you don't want harassing phone calls at night from restaurant managers threatening to steal employee wages, then you might want to avoid this place. read more

We have lived near Happy Wok for years but didn't discover it until the pandemic. It is now one of our favorite places. They created an excellent ordering system early in the pandemic--very easy to order and pay online. We always get pot stickers and fried rice, and the various entrees we have tried have all been good. It is the ultimate American Chinese food. I won't get Chinese take out from anywhere else. The Combination Platters consisting of a main dish, fried or white rice, and eggroll or soup, are fresh, tasty, with large portions. I usually get both an eggroll and soup for an extra dollar. The whole deal comes out to under $10 for dinner (under $8 for lunch) and is always up to my high standard. My favorites are shrimp and broccoli (huge, fresh shrimp that actually taste like shrimp should taste); Singapore rice noodle (just the right amount of spice and incredibly flavorful); General Tso chicken (large chunks of perfectly fried dark meat chicken, with a tangy but not overly spicy sauce). Many of the negative comments relate to the decor (yes, small, somewhat dingy, and not a place for date night) or delivery time. So, do what I do. Call ahead, come pick up your food within 10-15 minutes and take it home to enjoy. read more

We had dinner here tonight and were quite satisfied with the entire experience. The Happy Wok is about a 6 minute drive away. The parking is right there in the small plaza. We found a booth immediately and were served soon after placing our order. The food was tasty and we had to take home about half of our order. The menu includes many dishes from various Southeastern Asia countries in addition to an extensive offering of Chinese dishes. We plan to return in the future. read more

Gem on the west side of town. When I want to relive my time in Singapore & Malaysia, I come to Happy Wok for their Curry Laksa and Beef Rendang. Nasi Lemak is good. The coconut rice is delicious but their fried sardines and chicken could use a little help though. Still though, it hits the spot. Hainan Chicken is deceptively simple but by god, it will change your life. For those new to Hainan Chicken- it will change your life! They boil the chicken and the remaining juices is what the rice is cooked in. It's the essence of chicken on plate and it's unbelievably flavorful. I won't explain all the dish cos I'm sure you can google what they are but I will say that I can't satisfy my craving any where else in A2! I used to go to Penang's in Chinatown, NYC and I would say this place is up there. Delivery. Can't speak on this because I pick up or eat there. Traditionally, in Singapore, hawker centers (food stands) are the place to go for a quick bite. So I wouldn't wait too long to eat Roti Canai (pancakes), because it'll get soggy. I can't believe we waited so long to try this place...it's awesome! It's in a tiny strip mall on W. Stadium, in the same mall as the gigantic Little Ceasar statue. The restaurant is pretty humble on the inside, but clean - if a bit cluttered. There is seating for around 18 customers inside total. They have a good website with full menus, so you can take a peek and get an idea of what they offer. Staff are friendly~ Our recommendations (all from the Specialty Menu except for Garlic Chicken...the restaurant doesn't have all of these items every day, but it's a good excuse to be adventurous in ordering) - Roasted Duck Noodle Soup. Savory, flavory duck meat, rich broth, and medium rice or wheat noodles. I like to add a bit of chopped cilantro at home. - Garlic Chicken. Tender chicken, lots of veggies, a sweet/savory/garlicky sauce that was really very good! I wasn't expecting anything great, but this was really yummy/comfort-foody. - Roti Canai - thin, buttery, layered bread - like really, really delicate Naan, with a thin curry dip. Mmm, so good. Order comes with two pieces, enough for two as an appetizer -- it's rich. - Samosas - in wonton skins, fried crisp, vegetables and mildly spiced...kind of greasy and heavy, but still good for a craving. - Chicken Satay - tender with a sweet peanut sauce. The pork variety is just ok. - Fried pork dumplings. You get 8 of these babies for around 5 bucks...are filling and hit the spot. I also like the veggie dumplings, spinach noodle outside and mushroom/cabbage/tofu inside. These are similar to many other restaurants veg-dumplings (aka, probably come frozen in a bag), but they are still good. - Beef Rendang - Beef stew meat, cooked tender, with a rich curry brown sauce, potato, onion. Every once in awhile I'll get this dish and it's WAY too fatty/weird cuts of beef...but most of the time It's been good. - Chicken Mee Rebus - Rice noodles, chicken, egg, sprouts...I get cravings for this, and ever-so-often they're able to make a batch :O) - Pad Thai with Tofu...not too oily, good flavor and blend of sweet/sour/salty - the tofu is flavored and in thin strips so it has a wonderful texture. With peanut garnish and a split lime. - Donuts. Plain fried dough with cinnamon sugar...SO good when fresh, 10 of them for $2. You've been warned. DO NOT get any of the other Thai dishes, they are spectacularly bad...some of the worst food I've set tooth into. That's it for now!
