Happy + Hale is a trendy, healthy and hip eatery on 9th street in Durham. I had an amazing chimichurri steak bowl and I added extra shrimp. While they were generously putting on the chipotle ranch I asked them to go easy so I could be healthy but then they told me it was made out of Greek Yogurt. And it was delicious! Awesome spot with great food. I can't wait to return to try the poke and acai bowls. Excellent service as well. read more

I love everything about this place. From the energy of the people working there, to the fact there is a tiny (and awesome) yoga studio in back. They even give the older gentleman who hangs out on the sidewalk bench outside water and food. Fresh and good-for-you food! Only drawbacks is I've had my order "lost" during two separate lunch periods in a row and had to ask about it. They were super apologetic and made it up really quick both times- probably just kinks in the system. Also- may I suggest/beg that you keep the kitchen open until 830 or 9? It's horrible sweating your butt off in yoga to the thought of a delicious smoothie/shake or salad as a reward just a few steps away and when you go to order it be told the kitchen is closed when you get to the counter! Major bummer :( They did suggest when they saw my sad face to pre-order food next time...but maybe there should have been a sign to remind us at the studio check in to mitigate the disappointment ? #firstworldproblems I know. read more

This place isn't cheap at $10 for a bowl, but it is is a great place with healthy choices. I enjoyed the quinoa bowl, which was a pretty large serving of quinoa topped with tomatoes, black beans, feta, avocado, onions, and a delicious sauce. We went in the mid-afternoon, between lunch and dinner hours, and the service was relatively quick and it was easy to find seating for our large group. It's probably a lot more crowded at actual lunch times. I didn't try them, but the smoothie menu and fancy waters looked great, too. read more

I tried Happy and Hale when they first opened, and my salad was pretty good! But the service was slow and disjointed, and the place was PACKED. With the super-trendy industrial decor and nothing to absorb the sound, my lunch companion and I ate without talking because we couldn't hear each other over the sound what appeared to be an entire sorority gushing over their avocado toast. We tried it again the other day and thanks to the holiday break, it wasn't crowded at all. I got a similar salad to my first one, and it was not as good. Maybe it was my bad for ordering something with a lot of out-of-season ingredients (I know of other local restaurants that don't offer ingredients when they're out-of-season--just sayin'), but my husband wasn't happy with his autumnal salad, either. I also wasn't given the opportunity to specify that I wanted the dressing on the side and the thing was DOUSED. Finally, the service was still slow and disjointed--one employee even made a comment to another about poor communication on their end. This is my go to smoothie place! I have had the following smoothies and they are all delicious: almond bros, Hale Mary, green no envy, and pink drink. The only smoothie I didn't absolutely love was the aloe-ha and I think I just wasn't expecting the aloe flavor to be as strong. The almond brothers is my favorite, but is the least healthy! Their bowls and salads are also pretty good- I'm a big fan of the breakfast bowl! read more

This is probably my favorite place to eat in Durham. Definitely the place I frequent the most. H+H is a spot that offers customers a food option that is both healthy and tasty. I typically go back and forth between the protein bowl and the scramble. Both are great. Only downside to this place is it can be a bit of the pricey side. Healthy and creative food at an affordable price point with stellar customer service. The eye-rolling-ness of the yoga quotes on your bowls aren't taken overly seriously, and to hear an employee teasing another about being mindful of his energy brings a nice lightness to a place that could really easily step into being snobbish. (Just like how you could be perfectly happy ordering vegan here, but no one's going to judge the bacon you put on the bowl. Or you don't get any 'grain brain' monologues when you're tempted by the beer on tap). A recent customer service issue led to not just an apology, but a handwritten greeting card and making the issue right. From food to service, these guys have it nailed and deserve your business. If I had one request, it would be just a tiny bit more of operating hours. 8pm can be an early shut if you're a late diner like me. And heads up -- they start slowing down at even 7:45 or so, so don't push it. read more

Being from CA, there was a plethora of places there to grab a quick, healthy salad or smoothie whenever the craving hit. Not sure why, but there are far fewer such establishments here. I'm just glad that Happy & Hale gives me some options in that regard. So far I've tried their acai bowl which is filled with delicious granola, coconut shavings, and fruit - really hits the spot on a hot, humid summer afternoon. I've also tried their Walter's Harvest salad which had nuts, cranberries, and chunks of butternut squash in a lovely orange dressing which was really delicious. They have a ton of other salad options, including letting you make your own combination, as well as juices/smoothies. I would come here more frequently if it was located a bit closer. Maybe one day they'll open a location in CH.. here's hoping! read more

Visiting from California with my husband and we were in search of a vegan spot. We were pleasantly surprised with the "build your own" option, as well as the portion size for the $10 each bowl. I made mine with arugula, spinach, beets, tomatoes, sweet potatoes, chimichurri pesto, and lemon tahini dressing. Goodness! It was satiating and extremely flavorful. Perfect combination. I didn't think I could finish it but loved it till the end. My husband got one with hummus and loved his as well. Will more than likely visit again when we eventually find a house in North Carolina. We had the unexpected pleasure of being greeted and served by one of the founders Tyler. We also met the chef who made our DELICIOUS banana toast. The Pink Drink and Aloa Ha smoothies were very good. We just never know, and we always ask each other what we guess today's surprise iteration will be. The last straw was yesterday. I placed an advance order for two salads to be delivered today. That order arrived yesterday and sat on my desk all afternoon because I was not in the office. Ordered the Thai Chicken Crunch bowl and a City of Oats smoothie. They were very quick and had my order ready immediately. It is such a cool menu and fun spot on Ninth Street. Unfortunately the food bordered on inedible. I knew the smoothie had oats in it, but I didn't take into account that the smoothie itself is very thin and runny so you end up chewing bits of raw oats. Finally ! Happy and Hale came to Durham! This location has both indoor and outdoor seating. This is my all time favorite place for a salad. The BIG salad is my favorite but everything I have had here is amazing and fresh ( who doesn't love roasted sweet potatoes on their salad???) All of the dressings are homemade( my favorites are the avocado ranch and honey siracha )and their service, though counter service, is always friendly. The owner also makes an effort to say hi and introduce himself if he's working. I can't wait to try a beautiful acai bowl from here. read more

So, I'm on the fence about this place. I love the business model and wish more restaurants would focus on clean eating but I feel like H + H is missing a few things. First off, the staff here are marvelous. My girlfriend was torn between two salads and the girl helping us out suggested a create your own bowl that somewhat combed the two. She loved it and felt the young lady hit the nail on the head. I went with the Thai Chicken Crunch and thought it was delicious minus the chicken served in it. I don't discriminate against white or dark meat chicken but please take the fat off of it. We were both totally grossed out by it and if the line had not been so long, I would have said something. Speaking of long lines. The folks making the salads were killing it but there was a major hold up when paying. I do not know how much google pay/apple pay costs to purchase but the owner needs to at least look into it. Finally, for a "health food" place there are no macronutrients listed for anything on their menu, let alone calories. You would think a place like this would proudly displace these numbers.
