My husband and I read a review posted in a local paper by a well known and very informative food critic. Having taken his advice in the past and seeing that he gave Happy China and excellent review, we ventured out into the cold evening to check out what all of the rave was about. First, as soon as we walked in, we were greeted with kind smiles and the ambiance made us feel very warm and welcome. The music was on a light sounding romance channel but not too overwhelming so it set the mood that's for sure. A nice young man showed us to our seat after first offering us a choice of where we would like to be. Quickly afterwards, a young lady by the name of Yuki approached our table to let us know that she would be taking care of us and offered a soft drink while we looked through their menu. Looking through the menu, we noticed that they had everything categorized fairly well with the "Americanized" menu options in one part, and leading up to the authentic Sichuan cuisine. We started off with an appetizer from both sides of the menu, opting for the pan fried pork dumplings, and the ox tongue and tripe in hot oil. The dumplings had just the right amount of crispness and not too greasy as they often times are. The ox tongue (served cold) was a great choice as well. Having had a beef dish similar to this when we had visited the Sichuan Province a few years back, it brought back that great taste for us again. After taking our time to enjoy our appetizers, we decided to order our main entrees. Keeping it authentic, we chose the spicy double cooked pork, fish in Sichuan sauce, the eggplant with garlic sauce and a special they had posted in the entry way which translated to lamb casserole. Yes, quite a bit of food but we wanted a bit of everything and do not shy away from taking home leftovers. As many of the places we encountered while visiting China, Happy China stayed true to the unique serving as they did over there. Our dishes were brought out as they were prepared and placed neatly in the middle of our table along with side plates so we may serve ourselves as we saw fit. With dinner, we chose a bottle of Malbec. I need to add that they have a GREAT wine list accompanied by a blend of Asian brews, each and everyone having a nice description. At a point during our dinner, the manager approached our table to ask how everything was. Very nice touch. Though not of Asian decent, this young lady knew so much about the cuisine and even mentioned when she seen that we were getting stuffed and still had a bit of the double cooked pork, that it taste great in an omelet. We laughed a bit and told her we would take her up on that offer. All in all, our experience was a great one from the food, to the service. I love how they stayed true to the style of cooking and to the ingredients such as the garlic and the hot oils, which, if you have ever, EVER been to that area in China, you would know that it is in so many of their dishes and to not be confused with "greasiness" . I will return very soon and I wish them the best of luck. Thank you for the excellent experience and thank you for bringing a REAL taste of China to the triangle! read more
