I really wanted to give a higher rating because the husband and wife who own this restaurant are so kind and welcoming, but the food just wasn't satisfying. Deluxe beef rice noodle soup: their rice noodle soups only come in one size. They offer medium-rare beef (unlike other restaurants that serve their beef rare). I liked that there was a lot of green onions & cilantro, but the broth was flavourless...like eating noodles in a bowl of hot water. I like to add Sriracha to my pho, but they had a cheap hot sauce that is spicy/sour. Not sure if this is due to the Sriracha shortage or if it's their norm. Charbroiled pork, fried egg, and lemongrass chicken on rice: usually when we order this at other Vietnamese restaurants it comes with soup, but this one didn't. The portion was also really small. Hanoi Pho is in a really rough neighbourhood (Downtown Eastside) so we were surprised that their prices were so high. read more

I had not been here in 8 years, so time for an update. Turns out there's not much to update, other than the prices. The place is still the same run-down pho joint, located in the same rough neighbourhood that's not pleasant to walk around in. They have a separate vegetarian section of the menu. Since I got the standard veggie pho last time, this time I opted for the hot & soup tofu & vegetable noodle soup (with veggie broth; $16 plus tax). The soup came out in about 10 minutes, with plenty of veggies (loads of broccoli, cauliflower, carrot), deep fried tofu, and medium-width rice noodles. The broth was quite tangy and sour, with some sweetness, and light lemongrass; but it wasn't particularly complex or well-balanced. Decent overall. Friendly service. When I went to pay, they had automatically selected 15% tip -- which I would've given them, but I don't like that they had done that for me. Got the $9.00 tofu veggie rolls 1:00 PM on a Wednesday. Staff was friendly and my take out order was ready in under 10 minutes. Take out items consisted of a plastic carry bag, clamshell styrofoam container, 2 rolls individually saran wrapped, 1 large peanut sauce, napkins The warmed rolls were chewy and sweet. I believe the sweetness came from the marinated bean curd but I could be wrong. The large peanut sauce was also sweet with savory peanut flavors. Maybe a bit too sweet as there was flavour fatigue near the end of the meal. The peanut sauce was huge compared to the thrifty rolls creating disproportionate portions. Overall the rolls had rich sweet and savoury flavors that was a bit much when combined with the sweet peanut sauce. The pricey rolls yielded small portions and poor value. I always pass this place on the bus so decided to stop today. I ordered the veggies pho without the tofu and it was freaking amazing. Now I googled the menu first and thought for the area $8.50 was a little steep. Once I got my food and saw the effort they put into it I felt it was worth every cent. My bowl was loaded full of veggies. Literally like half a head of broccoli, cauliflower, snap pea, mushroom, carrots and crispy onion. I love how they topped it with cilantro and gave me tons of basil. The broth was not greasy at all; it was flavorful and clear. The owner was sooooo sweet and kind and spoke good English. Hanoi is my go to pho place in Van. I've been to a lot of them, and it's extremely hard to ignore how good their broth is. A worry everybody has when I give them directions to meet me here is that it's on Hastings near Main. Do not be perturbed by this! Its always spotless, always friendly, and always so tasty. Michael serves food quick, with a smile, and makes sure you have gum when you leave. If you are wondering what to get, go either with the classic pho, spicy chicken soup (pho is only with beef), or the vegetable soup they're famous for. Don't forget to add spring rolls! If you can handle the location, you'll find one of the best and most authentic Pho restaurants in the city. Located on East Hastings St, about 2 blocks east of Hastings & Main, Le Pho Bistro is also known as Hanoi Pho. There's lots of food options, but I can't seem to break away from my favourite - rare beef pho. The large will easily feed someone with a large appetite or offer a smaller appetite 2 servings. They make their broth from scratch, and it's flavourful, with just the right amount of spice. This is definitely something anyone who likes asian foods should try! read more

Despite the fact this amazing Vietnamese restaurant is located in an iffy area of town, it is otherwise impeccable in every way. The owner/manager Michael (who is always there) clearly takes a lot of pride in his business. This comes through in his consistently polite service, the cleanliness of the entire shop, and the generously portioned and delicious dishes. I really love this place and after many visits, have never been let down. The veggie pho is not oily or MSG-laden like at other Vietnamese restaurants. This one comes packed to the brim with broccoli, cauliflower, mushrooms and carrots -- and the aroma of browned onions really comes through in the broth. The spicy version is worth trying out too, especially if you enjoy Thai flavors. The springrolls are crisp and light. The salad rolls are perfect and the peanut sauce they come with is the best in the city. I'd much rather walk through Chinatown and eat here than spend double the price to eat half the amount at a pretentious hipster bar in Gastown. Hate to be tough on just one visit, as love to support local restos especially in Chinatown but considering there'a much better one right on Main/Pender, this one's an easy pass. Not only was the pho marginally better than the salad roll, the worst part was the 'plastic smell'; at first i had thought it was the fish oil sauce, as that can be bad too, but even my friend thought it wasn't right. so finally we traced it to perhaps the blue surgeon-like gloves one of the workers was wearing! No exaggeration she kept those on the whole time, from the time taking down the order to getting the bill. ice coffee was ok. Does offer WIFI and free parking on front. not a repeat visit for me. This amazing place beats all the pho in the area! I order the #17 with brisket. The broth is super delicious and flavorful, the meat is nice and succulent. The noodles are good and it comes with lots of delicious aromatic vegetables like thai basil and cilantro. The portion is perfect for me, my fiancee gets an extra meal from the leftovers. This is a real hidden gem, it doesn't look like much from the outside but it's cute on the inside, the service is fast and the owner is super nice! Either their BBH has prawns and beef brisket and regular pho noodles or they gave me the wrong order. But that's okay. It was still uber delicious! So really this is more like 3.5 stars. I tried asking the lady if my mysterious bowl of noodles was in fact their version of BBH but I don't think she understood me so I just went on eating. So whatever bowl of noodles I got it was delicious. The soup had a very shrimp paste-ish taste and it worked quite well. They have a good selection of vegetarian pho which I like to see (I'm not a vegetarian but I'd like to know that I have that option). Their location is situated by the sketchy part of town but if you find yourself in the Chinatown/Strathcona area and don't want to line up at Phnom Penh but still craving some pho, I'd recommend Hanoi Pho. I fought the cold and the cold won. Ya I am sick, that nasty mouth-breathing that makes your teeth all filmy disgusting sick. So what's a diva to do when she gets sick? Tell her BF to take her for Pho and then watch Disney movies with her until she falls asleep. Well, one out of two ain't bad right? Based on some reccomendations from friends, we decided to check out this place, which was pretty much empty on the weeknight we rolled in.... that just means we'll get all the attention we want! I had the hot and sour noodley veggie soup, which was pretty durn good, although ridiculously hot (temperature-wise) so I burned my tongue *cry*. The BF had a deluxe veggie soup with no noodles and it wasn't really all that deluxe. The broth was kinda meh, so he had to add some hot sauce and stuff to flavour it up. We also had some spring rolls which were pretty average but the dipping sauce I found to be too sweet and it weirded me out. This place was pretty average, I'd go back if I was in the area and had a hankerin' for some hot soup and Kenny G (seriously I think they played the whole freakin' album) but its not exactly close to home. Also it was weird that the server dude gave us our soups and then vanished for like 20 minutes while we ate but as soon as the BF put his spoon down he magically appeared and knew it was time to take his bowl away. The service is the friendliest, the restaurant is the cleanest, and oh yea, the food is the tastiest!! I see a lot of negative reviews where people complain about the price, the minimum charge per person, the service, etc... But i didn't mind it one bit! You know why there's a minimum $5.95 charge per person? Because a lot of restaurants along that part of East Hastings have a minimum charge. It isn't for you, you East Hasting newbie, it's to keep out people who will want to hang out drinking a cup of tea indoors for as long as possible. Don't get your panties in a knot, and if you come back here with a friend who doesn't want to eat, politely ask if that's a problem before writing an angry Yelp rant about it. I mean, this place is stumbling distance from a methadone clinic, yeesh. Also, while the prices may be a tad higher, this place was CLEAN! Have you ever been to the Pho place around the corner on Main Street and used their bathroom? Sure the place may be cheaper, but when you're taking a pee in the bathroom and wondering what creature got stuck in the wall and is presently decaying there, making that awful smell... you just might wish you went for a slightly pricier meal option. Besides that, the broth was the best damn Pho broth i've had in the area, and the portions and service were way better than i've had at other restaurants! This place gets bonus points for being able to clearly communicate what items contain what ingredients! When i asked what sauces came with our salad roll and was told peanut, i could say 'can we get something else? I'm allergic to peanuts' and our server understood completely! I love salad rolls, but sometimes i can't order them because the server doesn't understand whether i want MORE peanuts sauce, less peanut sauce, or just like the sound of my own voice emphatically saying 'no peanut sauce' again and again. After quite a few recommendations for Hanoi Pho, I knew I had to try it. Today was that day. I was excited after hearing about the Vegetarian section on the menu. Usually all I can find is Vegetable Pho which mostly likely has fish or something in the broth. Ehhhhh :( However, the menu CLEARLY states that it is VEGETARIAN, and also tells you that if you want fish sauce you should tell them and they will give it to you. I love the clarity of the menu. I didn't really have to ask a single question, except for when I inquired about the size of the spring rolls. The spring roll was pretty good, but not really necessary, now that I know how filling the soup is. Oh my GAWD, the soup. THE SOUP. The broth was flavourful and comforting. I just want a hot steaming cup of that all the time. Add a little hoisin and hot sauce.. mmmmyeeeeeahhhh. It was super full of veggies like broccoli, carrots, cauliflower, and salty little fried onions that add a great little bit of flavour in a mouth full of noodles. All the veggies were cooked perfectly. There were also 2 kinds of tofu! Soft white cubes and triangles of fried tofu. Man, that was one satisfying bowl of soup. I think I'll be here a LOT this winter. Also, pretty sure this pho is vegan. My friend ordered it as "vegan pho" and I didn't see anything in it that wouldn't have been vegan friendly. So, yeah. There you have it. The employees are all very very sweet and kind of adorable. Definitely give it a shot. read more

Before I start with the review, I must confess I am friends with the family and most likely my review will be slightly biased but here goes. Great little Vietnamese joint in the worst part of town. It's situated right next to the methadone clinic on East Hastings and the number of sketchy characters can be a little unnerving. Still, the Bui's run a homey, cozy little restaurant. The menu is huge, they have anything and everything and I'm sure you can ask for stuff off the menu because I've seen people eating food that I couldn't find on there. The prices are cheap, the soups are good, the vermicelli dishes are good and the rices are good. Because I know the family, I almost feel like I am visiting a friends house when I come here and can always expect delicious and cozy Vietnamese home cooking. read more

I recently had Vietnamese food for the first time, and being a devout vegetarian my only option was essentially a bowl of hot water with rice noodles. And then I moved in half a block from Hanoi Pho, and my life was forever changed. Holy smokes. Yes, yes and more yes. Not only do they have that amazing (and now somewhat famous) vegan pho, but they have a lovely array of other vegetarian and vegan dishes to chose from. And it is all really, really good. I was in the area, I needed a 'pho' like snack to entertain my cravings before doing some walking, I always remembered driving by this place, and now I was able to go in and try for myself to see what I thought about the experience, and I can say it was 'middle of the road' for my expectations. I know this place has been around for quite some time, I used to have friends live a block away, so I would always cross this place, and always wondered how good the Vietnamese food was in this little place. This time with my partner in tow, I had a chance to 'try' exactly what this place was about. I wonder how much business this place really gets? Reason why I ask this question is the enforced 'minimum charge' per person rule, that is all over the walls and in the menu. Do people just sit around here and chill out for hours in a day? I think the minimum is $5.99, it does bug me as what if I am the only one hungry, and my guest is just tagging along? That just forces me to order food that will be 'doggy bagged' and not as fresh when I get home. Another thing, if you are mad busy, I can understand the tactics of this, but this also deters business away. Pho is a sit down, shove food down your throat, and get the 'F' out type meal, and unless your food is 'god' like, and the flavors are causing and orgasm in my mouth, and I'm dripping wet (from the mouth of course!) then by all means, charge me the minimum... for an experience like that... you might be able to double charge me and get away with it! I ordered the vermicelli with spring rolls, and two types of cooked pork, and my partner had the Bun Bo Hue. My dish was not special, it hit the spot, but nothing to wave my arms around like a chicken and promote the place further. My partner's bowl had no pork knuckle in it (I thought Bun Bo Hue always had it) this one didn't, the noodles used were that of pho, and not the round noodles she was used to eating at every other joint, and the soup was different, not overly fire louded, with sweat dripping from your head, and you gasping for water, but it was subtle, and different. The bill was more than shocking, as I have had my fair share of Vietnamese food, where the total with tip came up to over $20. Really? Yes, I had to shake my head, you do realize what your serving? Going back to that minimum charge per head thing.... most of the dishes are over the $5.99.... so I can say all of the dishes on the menu are overpriced. In some sense, I felt ripped off, at least it was a cold day, so the steam of my anger heated me up better than the plate of food. Still a fan. These guys make consistently great vegetarian soup. I was away for several months (18) but came back and tried them out again and I was not disappointed. This time I even got the basil and bean sprouts (we did double check with the waiter - again possibly owner, to get them). Sketchy neighbourhood, yes. Delicious soup, yes. Go here, YES! I've eaten at Hanoi Pho twice, both times ordering the spicy vegetarian pho. The first time I was pleasantly surprised to find delicious pho that is vegetarian. After the second time, I had food poisoning. Suffice to say I have not gone back. Since it's close to work, I've been going a lot so I've ventured into trying random dishes besides my usual pho tam (regular pho with the thinly sliced beef). The tofu and veggie pho is great if you aren't feeling like eating meat. Super flavorful! Today I tried the pork broth, chicken and rice noodles pho and really loved it. I really, really want to like this place. The staff are very warm and friendly and seem to care a lot about their business. I love the fact that they make vegetarian pho. So I was really disappointed that by the fact that I was so disappointed by the food. I ordered vegetarian pho for a takeout lunch. I asked for lots of tofu, but I only got three pieces, along with what seemed like approximately five noodles. The veggies were fresh, but the whole thing was 99% broth, which tasted bland and pre-made compared with other veggies phos I've tried. After eating this pho, I had to run out for a real meal. At nearly $9 a bowl, it didn't seem worth it. I so wish that the quality was better. Other reviewers have mentioned that the location is sketchy, but this is my neighbourhood for both home and work, and I really like the people who run it. read more

I was doing some grocery shopping in Chinatown and was craving some pho for lunch so I yelped what was near by and Hanoi Pho came up. The exterior can be deceiving as it looks to be a hole in the wall. But once I walked in, the place was really nice and clean. I ordered the special pho and an order of pork spring rolls. Oh...my...word.... The pho was absolutely amazing. Broth had a very deep flavour profile and it came with lots of meat. It was so delicious I basically licked my bowl clean. The pho only comes in one size and is a bit on the pricey side but it's really worth it. The spring rolls had a perfect crisp to them and were not overly oily. The neighborhood is more than a little sketchy but definitely worth it. The staff was super nice but I wish the service was a tiny bit quicker. I was also in a little bit of a rush so maybe that's why I felt it took a little longer. The menu is extensive but I came here for the Pho and that's what I've gotten the few times I've been here. The Pho is really good. The beef broth is probably one of the most flavorful I've had so far. I believe it's made from scratch so there's no icky MSG taste. The spring rolls is something I've also gotten a few times. They're a tiny bit on the greasy side but nothing more than what you would expect from something deep fried. The one thing I haven't tried here yet is the vegetarian pho option. I've heard a lot about it. The only problem is every time I go to order it I crave meat. I've been here 3 or 4 times . I've only had pho. Its excellent and is made the way all pho should be. Slightly sweet, fragrant, piping hot with basil and sprouts on the side. It also contains quite a bit of offal at various times such as tripe, tendon , blood and a few things I cant describe . The noodles are always perfect and the broth never seems to vary. The price is a little more than most places. $10.00 for a smaller than usual bowl but the ingredients are there. The place is right in the very thick of the DTES The place is packed with nurses and social workers most days. If you love the colour of the DTES and I do , its has the making of a great day. Combined vegetable shopping and a trip to Chinatown or homestead junction. There ya go, don't say you don't have anything to do the next time your bored! read more

The food and service here were wonderful - the owner (I assume) was attentive and it was obvious that everything was freshly made. I got the Vietnamese special Bun (I think?) and wow, was it amazing. It had pork of two types on it and a friend spring roll and WOW, it was awesome. I'd eaten bun before but nothing as tasty as that. The restaurant was clean and well cared for which was a stark contrast to the area around it. I went while it was still light out but if it was dark, there's no way I would have ventured that way. Hastings on that end is basically an open air drug market and though I didn't get hassled/panhandled, it was definitely jarring to walk thru the doped out people littering the streets.
