Got treated for my birthday! Super clean place (including bathroom) and the ambiance is really nice. It's more expensive, all around $19+ for a bowl of something but that's Vancouver nowadays. However, the portions are HUGE. I took some of my soup home. I got the Crabmeat Spring Rolls with Vermicelli and my girlfriend got the Chicken Satay Pho. I was pretty content with what I ordered. I'm from Hanoi so I sometimes miss home and it's nice to have northern spring rolls. The pho that she got is on the richer side. read more

Had the beef & beef ball pho. Had it as takeout but sat at the bar while I waited. Service was good. The broth was okay, not the most flavourful or rich but okay. The vegetables were mostly stems, so much so that i had a pile of cilantro stems in my bowl afterwards. Almost like i was given the trimmings and not what you'd actually use, it was so bad. Best fish I've ever had! I have been wanting to go here for a while because it always looks busy and pretty inside. The inside is nice and clean. Staff was very sweet and helpful. The menu had incredible options and not too many which I prefer. The beef roll appetizer was so good with the fish sauce on the side. It is not fried, so more flavorful with the fresh herbs, well marinated beef and noodles. 10 out of 10. The turmeric fish absolutely the best fish I can remember having. Each bite was so good! It was perfectly cooked, nice and juice and tender. The fresh herbs made it so delicious and healthy. And the noodles and veggies on the side was the best compliment. We went to Vietnam a few months ago and loved the food we had in Hanoi. This is one of the very few restaurants that offered the specific Hanoi dishes that we were looking for - cha ca la vong and bun cha hanoi. These are some of the dishes we ordered: - Papaya Salad: nice and refreshing appetizer - Pork and Crabmeat Spring Roll: Not bad but slightly different from the usual Vietnamese spring rolls I'm used to and preferred - Cha Ca Ha Noi (Turmeric Fish with fresh dill): If you're not sure how to eat it, the staff said they can definitely show you. Their sauce had shrimp paste, which is different from the cha ca we had in Vietnamese. Some of the people in our party preferred the sauce this way. - Bun Cha Ha Noi (Grilled Pork Belly and Patties): Loved this dish in Vietnam. Theirs come pretty close to it as well. - Beef Stew in Claypot: We ordered this just to try out and was pleasantly surprised how yummy it is. The bread they serve with it was delicious as well. Overall, I would definitely come back here when I'm craving Bun Cha or Cha Ca. I would likely reorder the papaya salad or beef stew as well. They also have egg coffee on their menu so I'll try that next time as well. This is my second time visiting and although they have a small menu, their flavours of northern vietnam are different from the usual pho restaurants. We tried out quite a few items including the steamed rice rolls with pork patties and spring rolls (subbed with meat filled rice rolls) and we really like the thin rice sheets! The spring rolls themselves were a bit oily but filled to the brim. The pork skewers were tasty but again, very fatty as they use pork belly and the chicken wings were a large portion of crispy and flavourful wings! The turmeric fish was recommended on yelp and other reviewers so we decided to try it out and although the taste was good, I again found the actual dish a bit oily (especially the green onions stir fried beneath the fish slices). The vinaigrette sauce that came with the rice noodles though was delicious and made a great bite when sandwiched with the fish slice. In addition, the beef stew with chunks of shank stood out as our favourite with some tasty bread to mop up the sauce! Last, the beef rolls had no complaints and weren't bad for the price! Overall, the prices here are a bit higher but the food is quite good and is a place I would return to! read more

Looks like the HK cafe here (AA Plus) has died and reincarnated again. Parking is available on the side streets, and along Victoria. The place looks quite modern. Cool and cute looking decorations on the wall. Staff were friendly. The menus are pretty neat, as they are etched boards. Hope they don't change the pricing anytime soon. Food is definitely a bit pricey here, but the quality is something different. I tried their tumeric fish with dill, which is served in a sizzling skillet, with a side plate containing fish paste, vermicelli, salad, and crushed peanuts. The presentation is definitely there. The fish chunks were fresh and fragrant. Definitely impressive. My only complaint was that the food portion was definitely smaller than other Vietnamese places. Both my buddy and I left hungry. Should've expected this though, as I had the same complaint about Mr. Red which has the same owners. After tasting their Amazing Salads, I know where to go when I am on a diet!! Since its a warm day and we didn't really feel like anything heavy, we decided to try their Green Papaya Salad with Beef Jerky, and I ordered my new found favourite : Free Range Chicken Pho. The Salad came first and wow, the presentation is great and it is so FRESH!! The dressing is just right with all the right elements! Perfect balance of saltiness from the fish sauce, tartness from the lime juice, natural sweetness from the different vegetables, and of course the natural crunch from the green papaya!! After finishing our first salad, we thought we would also try the Chicken Feet Salad, with a different texture altogether, this has cucumber, jicama, bean sprouts, carrots, boneless chicken feet, this is another salad that will make you want to eat more, I added some of their homemade pickled Garlic & Chilli and it elevated the whole dish!! We went here for dinner after hearing many good things about this place. We got there around 6:30pm and the restaurant only had two other tables. The decor was very quaint and cozy, and as soon as we walked in we were greeted by the waitress. All throughout the night, service was very speedy and friendly. We ordered the chicken feet salad, the deep-fried chicken wings, and the pork and crab meat spring rolls as our appetizer. For our main course we want it the vermicelli noodles with pork hock meatballs, but we were told that they ran out of the meatballs that day. So we opted for the Stir fried beef noodle soup instead, as well as the steam rice noodle with pork patties platter. The chicken feet salad was pretty good. The chicken feet was deboned and slice thinly. The salad dressing was sweet, sour and savoury. The crab spring roll has a nice crunch on the outside and had a generous filling of crab. Dipping sauce though was a little bit bland. The chicken wings had really good crunchy batter on the outside, but the chicken wing itself can use a bit of marinade as it was lacking flavour on its own. The stirfried beef noodle soup was full of flavor, the broth was super tasty. I like the big sheet of rice noodle with the pork patty platter. Overall food was very nice, the presentation was exactly how you see it online. The atmosphere was quiet and great for conversation too. I had Gia An: Grilled pork patties (meat balls?) and prawn spring rolls. I have no idea what Gia An is. But as it seemed their signature, I decided to try it. Along Victoria Dr. , there are lots of Vietnamese restaurants and $15 for one plate lunch might be pricey here. But I always respect where they serve something authentic/original/region special. I just hoped $15 dish was worth to try it. The result was yes! I love it! I enjoyed by my eyes first and by tongue later. The pork patties were so delicious. I found kinda fatty. But good fat. Duck too? I had little by little because even small piece was very flavorful. Green vegetable on the plate rinsed off the fat later. I loved the combination. The spring rolls were good too. I love trying new restaurants and since I live in the area, I knew I had to make a trip here. We came here for lunch yesterday around 1:30pm and were seated right away. When I look at their menu, I noticed it's not your typical Vietnamese restaurant items. We ordered avocado rolls, lemongrass chicken, deep fried chicken wings and bun with deep fried tofu, Vietnamese sausage and pork hocks. Avocado rolls were super fresh and it came with peanut sauce. I personally like it dipped with fish sauce instead (although their fish sauce needs some improvement). The chicken wings were delicious and full of flavours. Lemongrass chicken was normal but still tasty. The bun's platter had a decent portion and I enjoyed everything that came with it. I will definitely come back to try their other unique dishes. It is a clean restaurant with good service. The only thing is that it's fairly pricey for Vietnamese food. Place has only been opened 6 months and decided to give this place a try on the advice of a friend who is from Vietnam. The decor is pretty unique with a Vietnamese theme. Their wooden menu followed suit and is much simpler than your typical Pho restaurant. I ordered the Bun Doc Mung Bat Dan (Pork hock, meatballs, vertical noodles in soup). Never had this kind of noodle soup before in a Vietnamese restaurant and I have to say it has a unique taste, but nothing out of this world. Portion size was a little on the low end. Came for dinner last night. Beef stew in clay pot with bread was excellent! So tasty and pipping hot! Noodle soup with chicken prawn egg ham had minimal fixings. The soup was ok but nothing spectacular. Chicken feet salad was refreshing. Spring rolls and crab spring rolls, like some reviews say, were very blend. Steamed rice rolls with pork balls, spring rolls for $16 was overpriced. This entrée has 2 tiny meatballs, small and blend spring rolls, rice noodles but and lots of shredded lettuce isn't worth it. (Not in photo) I came once b4 had the stirred fried beef pho which was just ordinary and egg coffee which was no difference than a regular small latte. Nice presentation and service are what I like. Overall verdict: Taste was ok but not the value. Small portion size and overpriced for a lot of beans sprouts and veggies make up most of the dishes. A couple things are pretty good but won't bring me back again. On my second stop on Victoria Drive, I decided to try the sister restaurant of Mr. Red Cafe, Hanoi Old Quarter Restaurant. Similar to Viet Mama Cafe, they feature fresh and high-quality ingredients and don't use any MSG in their dishes. It is clean, cozy, and spacious. It can get busy even on a weekday evening. Unlike other Vietnamese restaurants on the street, you can't find pho or salad rolls on the menu. Instead, it has a handful of food selections, with unique dishes that you can't find elsewhere. We ordered a bit of everything from the menu - starting with Deep Fried Chicken Wings for the appetizer. For $11, you get around 6 chicken wings, which is a generous portion. The chicken wings are evenly coated with a crispy skin. There are salt & pepper and lemon as sides. The meat is juicy, with fresh, crispy skin; however, the chicken wings are quite salty, to begin with. Otherwise, it would be a perfect appetizer to start the meal. We ordered two entrees. Pork Hock, Meatball, and Taro Stem Noodle Soup (Bun Doc Mung Bat Dan) are one of them. The portion is generous, with few pieces of pork hock. I enjoyed the broth, which is light and best for the cold weather. However, I'm not sure why the noodles are choppy, which I found it difficult to enjoy a big bite of noodles on its own. For our second entree, we ordered the Steamed Rice Rolls, which comes in a platter of Grilled Pork Patties and Pork & Prawn Spring Rolls. Though the portion is generous, unfortunately, I had to admit it looks better than it tastes. The plain rice roll is not silky enough, and the fish sauce broth is too salty which overpowers the overall flavor. The shell of the spring rolls is thick and not crispy, but the filling is flavourful and delicious. I would prefer the steamed rice roll from Viet Mama Cafe. Last but not least, we ordered an Egg Coffee to share. It is rare to find this in Vietnamese restaurants in Vancouver. It is Vietnamese coffee topped with whipped egg yolk and condensed milk texture. It is served in a hot water bath to keep the drink warm. Make sure to stir the drink before trying it! The bitterness from the Vietnamese coffee is covered by the sweetness from the condensed milk. As a die-hard iced Vietnamese coffee lover, this is not my cup of tea. It was too sweet to my liking. Hanoi Old Quarter Restaurant Hanoi Old Quarter Restaurant is a unique Northern Vietnamese restaurant, and you won't be expecting the regular pho or salad rolls here. Instead, you won't be able to find some dishes elsewhere. Overall, I enjoyed the Pork Hock Noodles and Deep Fried Chicken Wings the most. However, I would say the seasoning for some dishes can be toned down a bit. As for the Egg Coffee, I would treat it more like a dessert, which is best for people with a sweet tooth. Hanoi Old Quarter is a great little restauraunt located in a very competitive area for delicious Vietnamese eats. They specialize in northern Vietnamese food, similar to their sister restauraunt Mr. Red although they offer a slightly different menu. While they offer some tasty noodle soups like the Pho Gà (chicken noodle soup) which are great for cold rainy Vancouver days, their other special dishes are where they really shine. We've been here a bunch just for their Bún đậu mam tom (vermicelli noodle with vietnamese blood sausage, fried tofu, pork hock and a pungent shrimp-based sauce) which is impossible to find in most Vietnamese places in Canada. I also highly recommend their Bun cha ha noi (Hanoian fried pork belly and meatballs with vermicelli with pickled carrot and daikon sauce). Service is fairly fast and very friendly. The atmosphere is great, with lots of vietnamese decorations and plants setting the mood. All in all a great place to stop by if you're in the area. read more

Hanoi Old Quarter is one of the many Vietnamese restaurants that dot Victoria Drive. The sister restaurant to Mr Red Cafe, Hanoi Old Quarter similarly focusses on northern Vietnamese cuisine. I dropped by in late November to pick up an order of Bánh Cuốn Nhân Thịt, Ruốc ($12) and Cánh Gà Chiên Tẩm Bột ($11). I found that the banh cuon (steam rice rolls with meat and shrimp filling) was not as thin as the ones from nearby Viet Mama Cafe but were still pretty light and tasty. I really liked the texture of the deep-fried chicken wings which were both super crispy on the outside and juicy and tender on the inside. I highly recommend you to try it at least once. The price tag makes it not worth it to be an everyday drink. However, it is an experience to taste an item not found at most restaurants. The pork and crab meat spring roll was interesting but the crab meat lacked flavour. The steamed rice rolls brought back memories of my mom's cooking when she used to make these. The noodle soup was average. Covid precautions were in place. Everyone had to sanitize their hands and get their own water or tea. Staff wore face masks. Hanoi Old Quarter is the side of Vietnamese cuisine that Vancouver doesn't often see. Sure we have a ton of good pho joints and our favourite hole in the wall spots, but most places are just pho and banh mi and lemongrass meats. The broth was rich without being overpowering, and the beef slices were flavourful and tender. The steamed rice rolls were silky soft, and perfect for dipping into the fish sauce to pair with the patties. Also, this is one of the first places I've had egg coffee in Vancouver. We came here for dinner on a Thursday night. We just walked in without reservation. Indeed the restaurant was filled with customers quickly. We ordered the green papaya salad with beef jerky, gia an with grilled pork patties and pork and shrimp spring rolls, crab meat spring rolls, and duck stew and green banana in clay pot. All of them tasted delicious. - the green papaya salad tasted like ones at other Thai restaurants. This restaurant added beef jerky to the salad like an accent to the dish. - The gia an was the rice rolls that tasted so smooth, soft and delicious as it came with the sauce. The pork patties were like meat balls in the bowl of sauce. The pork and prawn spring rolls of course tasted excellent as it was crispy outside and soft and juicy inside. It also came with some salad on the side. - The crab meat spring rolls came in three pieces. Each piece was cut into half. Again this tasted excellent. Who wouldn't like crispy spring rolls? - The duck stew and green banana tasted very interesting to us. We never had something like this before. It was about $20 person (three of us) including tip. Short story: you must try this place! This was the Bun Cha Ha Noi I have been looking for since we visited Northern Vietnam over 3 years ago. It was perfect! The fried rolls were the best. A new Northern Vietnamese spot, Hanoi Old Quarter Restaurant, opened up along Victoria Drive. It's run by the same owners as Mr. Red Cafe. It's close to Kalvin's Szechuan but Cafe Dang Anh is also nearby. The inside is modern and clean with about 9-10 tables (about 34 seats). They have chili oil, sriracha sauce and pickled peppers & garlic slices on the table as condiments. Same as what you'll find at Mr. Red Cafe. Service was good the first visit then mediocre second time around. Wish they would bring you out a pot of tea and waters without you having to ask every time for a refill. The menu is one page consisting of appetizers, gin an (steam rice rolls), entrees, rice dishes and desserts. Trip #1 We dropped in on a Wednesday evening (around 6:30pm) to find the place half full. - Banh cuon roi cha thi nuong, nem ran ($15.00) - grilled pork patties and pork & prawn spring rolls. This also came with cucumber, bean sprouts and herbs. Spring rolls were delightful; light, crispy and stuffed with a delicious filling. Pork patties were tasty but a tad salty. The steamed rice rolls, topped with fried shallots, were fresh and homey. - Bun doc mung bat dan ($13.00) - pork hock, meatballs and doc mung (taro stem). The broth was super clean with an underlying depth to it. The doc mung was interesting; neutral in taste but added some texture. The meatballs were the most interesting aspect of this noodle bowl. - Banh mi sot vang ($15.00) - beef stew in clay pot with banh mi. This was the least interesting thing we ordered. You can get this at a couple other Vietnamese spots (Au Petit Cafe comes to mind). Broth was tasty and came with tender beef and chunks of carrots. The banh mi didn't leave a lasting impression on me. Trip #2 We dropped in on a Friday evening (around 7:00pm) and just missed the rush. - Vietnamese coffee with condensed milk ($5.00) - Deep fried chicken wings ($11.00) - these were pricey but fantastic. You get 8 pieces of hot, juicy, crispy wings. The sauce was an interesting; creamy with the slightest under lying layer of heat. - Cha ca ha noi ($17.00) - turmeric fish with fresh dill. This included a platter of vermicelli noodles, chips, fresh herbs (mint, cilantro and perilla), crushed peanuts and mam nem (a fermented shrimp paste sauce). The mam nem was very distinct with it's own musky, funky aroma but in a good way. I was super excited for the fish but it was a complete miss. Salty to the extreme. Very, very disappointing. - Vit om chuoi ($17.00) - duck stew and green banana in clay pot with a side of vermicelli noodles. This was the best dish of the night. The pieces of duck were tender but still retained a satisfying chewy bite. Broth was flavourful with depth. Only complaint is that I wish there was a bit more meat given. Felt like it was half bone and half meat. - Bun dau mam tom phat loc ($17.00) - pork hock, deep fried tofu and Vietnamese sausage. This also came with the same sides as the cha ca dish except there was bean sprouts and cucumber. Best thing on this platter was the Vietnamese sausage. Reminded me of blood sausage. Deep fried tofu was standard. I enjoyed the pork hock more from my first trip (in the bun doc dish) than plain and cold on it's own. Always enjoy places that try to bring something different to the table. HOQ does that but beware of the smaller portions and higher price point. Cash or debit only. 3.5 stars. read more
