Hanlin is located in Richmond along a street where every other business is a boba shop- the competition is fierce! The ceilings of this shop are high and the walls are decorated with shelves and cool displays. Their ground floor is where you order, and they have an upstairs for their main seating area. I ordered their seasonal longan osmanthus slush which was decent but underwhelming as both the fruit and the tea were very subtle flavors. If I were to come back, I'd have to try one of their more classic items. read more

First I thought it just another bubble tea place but no , this cafe not only have a variety of special drink but their desserts and pastries are phenomenal. I ordered Earl grey chestnut cake, The texture is Soft, moist and the sponge layers are infused with Earl Grey. $7.5 Uji matcha hazelnut The matcha brings a deep, aromatic bitterness while the hazelnut adds warmth, crunch, and a naturally sweet aroma.$8 Drink: Taro Mochi Latte , ask for 50% less sugar and the sweetness is just right from the handmade taro paste They also have savory pastry like the Portuguese egg tart and curry beef puff pie which I will come back to try. I like they have a upper level seating area and it looks very cozy up there. We came here after 4pm Thurs and the upper level is already full. Staff are very nice and friendly, highly recommended! read more

While I was waiting for appoinrment in Richmond, I had some time to visit some cafe to get some dessert or tea, so, I visited Hanlin tea house. I have been here a few times, and every time I visit, menu always different. So, I got Uji Matcha Latte and Uji Matcha hazelnut cake which I never tried. Cake was very good. There were layer of matcha mousse with hazelnut crisp at the bottom and side was covered by thin slice of matcha hazelnut chocolate. It was not too sweet, but, sweetness was pefect. Presentation was very beautiful. I really liked this cake. Highlight was Uji Matcha Latte! It had very bold strong flavor. Sweetness was regular level which was perfect. Size was very generous. Very delicious! I spoke to staff who made this drink, Uji Matcha was imported from Japan. It was very delicious drink. I found their other dessert looked amazing. I will visit again read more

I tried the Sunset in Thai cake which had Thai tea sponge cake, Thai tea cremeux, and coconut passionfruit. It was quite a big piece of cake and I enjoyed all the different layers. It was fairly light and not too sweet. For drinks, they had a few mochi drinks that looked interesting and I got the Mochi Longjing Tea which had lots of soft mochi and pretty strong tea flavour. The Super Mango Coconut was also pretty good if you don't want to line up for Macu Tea. Both were $7.99. They have some seating upstairs unlike most bubble tea places these days and there's also free wifi if you need to work or study. Also I've tried their BOGO milk teas on UberEats which are a great deal! read more

Hanlin gives other mango drink shops a run for its money. King of who? Mango mochi drink had a great balance of pomelo, mochi liquid(?), and mango chunks. Love me a mango pomelo sago spinoff but with the mango sticky rice rage? MOCHI IS PERF. Though I'd strongly recommend against getting the Uji Matcha Latte, my friend got it and tasted like pale green milk *.* But if you want some yummy dessert drink, mango mochi might be up your alley! Also love that the upstairs is a cozy spot for studying or chatting (min. of 6 plugs spotted in the outlet corner) read more

Did not want to wait in line for Macu Tea & gave this place a try. Unlike Macu, this place has an upstairs area to sit and limited seating downstairs. Their decor is very chic & cute and looks like a great place to sit, sip, and hang out. Their taro drink had lots of fresh taro and their mango sago was a good blend of mango, pomelo, and sweetness. Staff were friendly and wait was not long despite multiple orders being made by customers. read more

This place is a dream and anyone who can't see past Macu is seriously missing out! Great desserts, delicious drinks, and an inviting and neat seating space with an upstairs loft! Both fruit smoothies and tea drinks are delicious here! Mango Coconut Smoothie (5/5) Taste: This is by far my favourite drink, and the best part? It's lactose free! This drink is seriously a hug in a cup, full of mango, sago, and coconut milk! Portion: Great for 1 person (very loaded drink) Value for Money: While on the pricier side for bbt, if you're planning to sit down and enjoy the cafe, I'd say it's worth it more than waiting in line at Macu for takeout! read more

Aesthetic interior and food. The inside has 2 levels and most of the seating is on the 2nd level so you have to bring your food up the stairs. View is nice up there but the seating is pretty crowded - lots of students with laptops studying there. I got their Fruit Tea and compared to other places, its flavors did not stand out. It was not very sweet and the tea taste didn't come through. We tried some of their desserts too since they look really good. The Earl Grey Chestnut cake had a nice earl grey flavor on the cream, but the cake itself was again, not very sweet and a bit bland. The Hazelnut Chocolate Roll Cake was delicious though - very chocolatey hazelnut shell and had a nice touch of chocolate hazelnut cream layering the inside of the roll cake. Overall, would come back for the Hazelnut Chocolate Roll. read more

Amazing customer service and a great overall experience! We ordered three drinks: mango coconut sago, jade tea latte, and kyoho grape fruit tea crema. The grape drink was the standout--absolutely delicious! It was perfectly sweet with fresh grape bites, grape jelly, and the salted cream added a perfect touch. The mango drink wasn't as great, likely because mango isn't in season. The sago was hard, and the mango was sour, but when I mentioned it to the staff, they remade it for me without hesitation. They were super friendly and accommodating, which really stood out. The place itself is cute, with a cozy loft area to relax and hang out. Overall, the experience was wonderful, and I'll definitely be coming back! Great drinks and even better service. read more

I came here to study with a friend and I loved the calm and quiet ambiance with the great drinks and food. Located inside of a strip mall, they are next to a bunch of other small shops. Despite their outside appearance, the inside is actually much bigger than I thought and includes an upstairs seating area. They had quite a few of drinks and food options, but my friend and I just decided on a cake and milk tea. Service was alright, a bit slow and not very nice but I didn't really mind. The cake was so so good. There's a hard layer of cream on the outside to break through when you get into the cake but it's SO good. The cake is light and airy, and not too sweet. The hazelnuts go with the matcha so well and add something new and complimentary to the cake. Highly recommend. The inside of the shop is also pretty quiet and has dim lighting, but they do have wifi for you to study at! read more

We got the matcha roll cake and peach with foam drink. The matcha roll cake was really matcha. It contained just the right amount of matcha. The outside was a little hard (made it hard to cut) but other than that I really liked the texture. The inside was nice and fluffy not overly dry. The cream was creamy and not overly sweet. The peach with foam drink was okay. It wasn't overly sweet as I asked for 50% sugar but it didn't really taste like peaches at all. The foam was nice and savoury. Overall a cute place to hang out with friends over a dessert but definitely on the pricier side of things. read more

Just discover this tea shop and wow, the inside wall decor was amazingly impressive. They do have two floors which Im looking forward to try it out when they open for dine ins. I was actually looking for dessert luckily they still have some cake left where I ordered four flavours that they packed in a nice fancy box. All the cakes were not sweet which is my type of cakes as well as so aesthetically beautiful, I got the hazelnut matcha roll, chatramue, matcha fog and hokkaido. My favourite would be the hokkaido as its so creamy and tasty the other three are okay but not that flavoursome. Its a little bit pricy but guess thats what you get from the beauty of the cakes and delicious taste. They do have lots to offer, especially with drinks too which I will definitely will try to come back to try it out. read more

Came here on a weekend evening so it was pretty crowded. Ambience is gorgeous, with a split-level upper floor that has more seating and can accommodate larger groups. I had a Hanlin Black Tea Latte and a Strawberry roll cake. The drink was very sweet, but the flavour was kinda meh. The cake was delicious -- with soft sponge, cream, and topped with half a strawberry. I liked that it wasn't overly sweet. It was a little overpriced though, at $8.99 for a pretty small slice. It's a nice place to chill with friends, but I doubt I'll return again anytime soon. read more

Very aesthetic interior and bubble tea. Prices are ok, bubble tea could be better. I happened to be here when they had their brown sugar pearl macchiato on promotion for $4.70 instead of $6.39. I don't know where they advertised this, as their Instagram is not updated and the promotional sign is inside the cafe. Anyway, for this price, I'd get it again, but for regular price, probably not. I felt like it was on par with Xing Fu Tang's brown sugar pearl milk drink, and it looks very similar too. I tried to go again while the promotion was still on, but they were out of brown sugar pearls. The only substitution they could offer was regular pearls, even though brown sugar pudding costs the same as an add-on ($1 for brown sugar pearl add-on). So that was disappointing. Another downside is they don't have a stamp card. My dad got a hot milk tea, I can't remember which one, and he liked the tea taste, although it was a little on the sweet side. On a side note, I don't know how I feel about having a plastic seal and using a plastic straw to drink hot tea. At least the cup was paper. The interior is very nice and fancy looking. The chairs are comfortable; I could see myself hanging out here for awhile. If they have more promotions, I'd come back to hang out, but other than that, I probably won't come back to try their other drinks. read more

Delicious and good selection of drinks. Their cakes are also pretty good, but I find their choices a bit limited. Edit (Feb 3, 2020): their drinks are inconsistent. I normally love ordering their black sesame matcha latte with pearls, but this time I was thoroughly disappointed. The black sesame was all clumped up. The pearls were bland and not cooked thoroughly. We also tried their black tea latte with herbal jelly and pearls.... also meh. Their Matcha Fog cake was still good, but that's about it. SN: I've been here at the cafe for 25 minutes now and they've left the milk on their counter table the entire time. And it's not even because they're busy. (No new customers at the counter). Bubble tea and dessert house with a very polished but comfortable aesthetic. I was a bit let down because I called ahead before visiting to see if it was possible to order any of the sandwiches from their formulé box individually and the person on the phone said it was, but when I arrived and tried to order an individual salmon roe sandwich, they said the sandwiches only came in a set. I don't eat meat so I couldn't eat the other sandwiches in the set, and the croissants which they seem to sell individually also contained meat, so I ended up just getting a drink and cake slice. The drink and cake were very good though, and filling enough on their own, so I didn't leave unhappy. I had their Watermelon Fruit Tea Slush with Cheese and Black Pearls and a slice of Thai Milk Tea Cake. The slush had a nice natural watermelon flavour and the texture wasn't too icy or too watery. They apparently use green tea but the taste of the tea was so subtle I wouldn't have noticed if I wasn't expecting it. They gave a nice thick layer of cheese foam and I was actually surprised by how well it went with the watermelon. I got this at 30% sugar which is their minimum sweetness level for this drink and found it to be a nice mild sweetness, I think getting it at full sugar might overwhelm the natural sweetness of the fruit. The Thai Tea Cake is a custard cake on top of a crumb crust. I liked the toasty flavour of the cake and thought it captured the essence of a good Thai tea pretty well. Although this was definitely sweet, I appreciated that it was less sweet than most Western-style desserts. Although they were inconsistent with my sandwich question, the service was super friendly and because they weren't busy when I visited at about 1:30 on a Sunday, they were able to make my drink pretty quickly. The prices are a little steep but it pays off in high quality and decent portion sizes. read more

I've spent 2 years trying just about every boba place in Richmond, and this is certainly the worst I've had so far. I ordered the seasonal special, a fruit tea with peach and cream, and I added white pearls. Worse, they were cut bigger than the straw so you had to literally eat the peaches with a spoon. Do not rexo read more

Hanlin Tea House - definitely a pricer bbt place but the aesthetic is poppin and high quality tea whether you're willing to pay closer to $7 for bbt is your choice! Matcha black sesame tea latte 8/10 It was delicious but nothing expectational Saw the worker make the matcha in house so that's pretty good There's a rich foam at the top Not sure if I was supposed to sip or use a straw Unique combo and haven't seen it before It's smooth but has bits of black sesame not gritty which I enjoyed Fresh Jade lemon tea 9.5/10 Surprised how much I enjoyed it It tasted bright Super refreshing and a perfect mix of tart and sweet There's a rich tea flavour with lime and lemon slices to enrich the flavour Matcha cake 9/10 Strawberry cake 8.5/10 Personally enjoyed the matcha more than the strawberry But my friend adored the strawberry Usually strawberry tarts are overly sweet but this one wasn't Matcha had an interesting appearance and was incredibly creamy like butter It's black on the outside and green on the inside It wasn't necessarily bitter but it wasn't sweet Reminds me of how coffee isn't sweet but bitter like that kind of rich taste! read more

From the music, design to decor - absolutely stunning. The finishing touches were captivating. The use of real plants, roses as centrepieces, and little pillows on the benches. Service is good. The staff were able to answer our questions and offered to give us recommendations. The "panda" drinks have both white and black pearls, but they don't recommend adding pearls to other drinks because they alter the taste. BUT if you are feeling rebellious, you can add black pearls to other drinks for an additional $0.50. Drinks can be a little pricey depending on what your order. They are priced from around $5 - $7 or a little more depending on whether you add pearls or not. We ordered their tea lattes and honestly, the drinks tasted watered down. The tea flavour is weak. This is before the ice melted! The pearls were on the softer side. Maybe the fruity drinks are better? I saw they were cutting real fruits. This place is absolutely beautiful and nothing like other bubble tea place in Richmond in terms of design and ambience. In terms of the drinks, we thought there was room for improvement. 2/5 for drinks + an extra star because of the lovely atmosphere! read more

Fun and interesting menu -- different than your typical bbt shop. They have fruit teas, milk teas, coffee and mixed drinks of coffee and bbt. ***PSA: you can substitute the milk for soy milk for any of the drinks!!! Just let them know! The interior is super cute, clean and fun. They have these little drink-shaped tables and designated waiting areas. There are stairs that lead up to a second floor balcony decked with tables and chairs -- perfect for studying. The shop reminds me of a bougie café. They have a display that sounds while flashing your order number so you all you need to do is look at the number displayed on the screen to figure out when your order is ready. I got the Soy Milk Tea Latte with pearls. Not bad...drinks are on the pricier side--averaging around $6 per drink. I will definitely be coming back to study here with friends. read more

I tried a variety of drinks at Hanlin before and I would say they're definitely on the less sugary side for drinks. I would say you never have to get a drink with 'less sugar' because their drinks are naturally not very sugary. (Aka Healthy!) My favourites are the fruit and tea-related drinks the most. Their Orange Fruit Tea is THE BEST for a nice hot summer day. It's super refreshing and filled with so many oranges that, if you would like to, you can go home, add more tea/water, and you got yourself another cup cause the oranges are just that flavourful. They also serve cake WHICH IS GREAT cause during the beginning of the lockdown, they were one of the only places to serve cake (and boba). Their cake is pretty decent too. The interior is super nice (a warm cozy loft feeling) but unfortunately, the 2nd floor is not open due to no seat in but recommended to enjoy the interior once seating is possible again! read more

Stopped by this cafe because I needed a place to study with my friend! There are two floors, and you order from their counter on the bottom floor! The interior is decorated really cutely and had some cute panda statues! They have a decent variety of both savoury and sweet goods and a larger variety of drinks from coffee/latte, milk, to tea. I got two of their daily featured cakes, Hokkaido Milk and Peach Cake! I headed upstairs and there was a pretty spacious are for people to sit - definitely very cozy! The cakes itself were pretty good, very light and airy HOWEVER the price for the cakes are definitely more expensive, so be warned! I think overall this is not a bad place for chit chat and studying. Unlike most bubble tea places that doesn't offer food, they offer a decent amount of seatings. We ordered a matcha latte, panda puer latte and 2 cakes. I would recommend ordering 80% sweetness instead of half or lower sweetness otherwise the tea flavor is too strong and can't tastes the sweetness at all. We ordered a matcha cake and ask strawberry cake. The matcha cake tastes great but the strawberry cake tastes really dry. Overall, the decor of the place is so cute as well. read more

There are so many bubble tea shops opening it's hard to keep track of them all! I've been to Hanlin twice now, first time to try their black sugar pearl macchiato and today the cheese foam green tea. Taste wise, both were excellent, but to this day I still don't get the hype over black sugar pearl milk. The macchiato is on special right now for $4.70, but I doubt I will be getting it at regular price. The cheese foam tea was good, their tea flavour is bold and I like how all drinks are customizable in sweetness, even their black sugar drinks. The only con to the drinks at Hanlin is the price, but it serves well as an occasional treat. The shop itself is very aesthetically pleasing, with a high ceiling at the serving counter, ample lighting and wooden interior. I haven't tried the cakes yet and not particularly inclined to since they look way overpriced for the tiny portion. read more

I typically come here for their signature 'panda' series milk tea ('panda' in reference to a 50/50 tapioca pearl to standard pearl ratio). I particular love this series of drinks because they are so great at cooking the pearls to its *prime* chewiness - highly recommend! I tried the Thai milk tea today, I was surprised they don't overwhelm the drink with evaporated milk (a major plus for my evaporated-milk-sensitive-self). Though the drink and pearls tasted great, this drink is priced on the steeper side, approx $6 for a medium sized drink. Another drink I got was the mango slush with cheese. This was a bigger disappointment than the last, my drink was so icy and bland, was only 3/4 full and costed closer to the $9 price point. This is not the drink I'd come back for. So the drinks menu is a hit or miss, but I have to point out that Hanlin is one of the most aesthetically thoughtful bubble tea shops I've been to. The extent of thought put into the interior design, the intricacy of their millwork install, and the daintiness of everything else in the space is definitely a +1. read more
