Kevin always treats me right. He's never tried to up sell me and in fact, has talked me out of things. One time, my dropper post was blown out. I was all set to buy a new one but he convinced me to send it in for repair. He then found me a temporary one to use while it was being repaired so I could still ride. Terrible experience. The owner, Kevin, doesn't answer the phone, doesn't return calls, and makes promises he doesn't keep. We had our bike on consignment, and Kevin said it should sell in about 2 weeks. After a month with no updates, we went to the store, and Kevin said he sold it. Great! Well, no, not so great. He wouldn't pay us !!! After 5 appointments with promises to pay and excuse after excuse, he finally paid us. I do not recommend Kevin or Hangtown Cyclery. read more

Hangtown Cyclery has terrible customer service, is dishonest, and the owner uses cheap products that raise serious concerns. I brought in my front wheel that needed sealant refreshed because it was due. I removed the tire myself and was unable to get it re-installed because I do not have a compressor and I was in a rush. I brought in the wheel and the guy replaced my Stan's Tubeless Rim Tape with Guerilla Tape (not a cycling product and not designed for high pressure Tubeless). In addition, when he returned the wheel to me, it had a wobble or bubble in the tire first ride out. He defensively said it wasn't him (I never accused him, this could have been me), but if I am paying you, how does a bike shop not inspect the quality of their work before returning to the customer? Ultimately I ended up needing to visit another bike shop down the hill who informed me the rim had been re-taped incorrectly and would not hold air. The other shop replaced the tire with a new one, showed me it wouldn't hold air, and then quickly replaced the rim tape with the correct tape for my wheel, charged me less, and had it back to me faster. The issues was resolved in one visit. After giving this guy the benefit of the doubt multiple times, he instead argued with me that Guerilla tape can be used for bikes (I know I worked in many bike shops) but it's not suitable for high pressure tubeless. In addition, even if it could, my tire would not hold air, and the service I paid for was never delivered. He refused a refund, didn't offer even a partial, store credit, or any solution for a follow up, he just wanted to argue. This shop has lost a customer for life over $30 and for not using suitable bike products. He rudely showed me the door and I am glad that's the last time I will have to walk through it and have such a terrible experience. As someone who has been recovering after their hospital visit from a very bad crash on this bike, I put my trust in this "mechanic" to give me reliable and dependable service to make my bike safe to ride. I was let down. I have never missed the friendly, professional, and self-accountable, atmosphere of Placerville Bike Shop more in my life. read more

I dropped off my bike for a tuneup and new tires and tubes. Was told it would take a week. After 10 days, I started calling. Nobody answered. I left messages. Nobody returned calls. I went by the shop several times during business hours and it was locked up. No sign on the door. No explanatory message on voicemail. I even went to the Placerville PD. All they could do was watch for him on patrols. The owner/operator is Kevin Bell. I found some social media posts to the effect that he just closes up periodically, without warning. I finally caught him there after 3 weeks and took my bike back. He had no satisfactory excuse for closing without notice and not returning calls. He runs the shop apparently as a vanity business. People say he is a nice guy and have served them well. Others say he's been doing this for years. I won't be back or recommend the business. Too bad because it is an prime location on Main St in quaint Placerville. read more

OLD FASHIONED FRIENDLY SERVICE STILL EXISTS! I came into Hangtown Cyclery for the first time to get a simple flat fixed on my way to Mammoth Lakes and Bishop for the July 4th, 2020 weekend. I received a level of service that I could only describe as exceptional: Enthusiastic owner Kevin and energetic sidekick Dustin repaired my flat promptly, unexpectedly weighed my bike (out of curiosity) and recommended a tubeless tire conversion while extolling its myriad benefits. One upgrade led to another, and I now have a very dialed-in Specialized Epic mountain bike! I brought my wife's old Trek mountain bike for a tune-up and shock overhaul and she is also a delighted customer! BOTTOM LINE: Kevin and Dustin are passionate cyclists first and foremost and clearly display and share their expertise through supportive advice and recommendations on bike repair, maintenance, and upgrade as if my bike were their own. I popped in to get help with a chain that had been falling off. Kevin was super friendly and helpful, and ended up putting a higher quality chain on my road bike. He made several other adjustments and charged me only for the chain, and all this was done in about 15 minutes. He's definitely my go-to place now for my bicycle maintenance. read more

Even though I came in on a busy Saturday afternoon, they still took great care of me. I slammed a sharp rock and completely blew out my tire. The guys hooked me up with a new, thicker walled tire, installed it in less time than it took me to hit Raley's and get back. They also greased up my chain and did a mini tune, without asking or charging extra. I was impressed that the owner and mechanic are big mountain bike riders themselves. I never trust anyone with my gear who doesn't play the game. read more

On Saturday at 4pm I brought my kids to this store to check out some bikes, we knew it closes at 5. When we got to the store the lights were off but the door was open a few inches. While we were looking through the glass door at the bikes and trying to figure out if we should go in, an employee rushed up and literally closed the door in our face and walked away. I understand that circumstances may cause an early closure, but to close the door in our face without a brief explanation or apology is just downright rude. They definitely lost a customer, a local one with return business. read more

Kevin is a badass. I wandered in hoping to score a used mountain bike. I'm crazy short and the other shop didn't have anything ready that would fit me. Kevin luckily had one in from a trade the day before but it wasn't serviced yet. He could have blown me off or told me to come a day or so later but instead, he dropped what he was doing and jumped onto my future bike fixup! He replaced the tires, handlebars, seat, wiped it down, checked and tightened the brakes. He did some other tune up but I'm not a bike expert so I don't really remember what else. But he was super cool and efficient and quick. He's been working on bikes since he was a kid and dirt bikes. He and his wife are big into mountain biking and we're going on a trip that weekend, so instead of him sending me on my way, he totally put together what I needed that moment without making me wait. Kevin greeted my husband and I upon us entering shop, and has every time we have come in since. This shop is a local owner shop (I only see Kevin there, one man show!). I bought a bike needing one with mega shocks due to a neck, upper back and shoulder injuries. I purchased one he recommended and have zero regrets (most expensive bike I've owned but worth the price for sure). Kevin is a great guy, cares about his customers and personalizes our bikes even on a walk in basis this last time. I prefer purchasing from locals who are like Kevin. Customer Service is extremely important, and my husband (who did not purchase his here in Pville, rather in Folsom) switched to Hangtown because Mikes in Folsom was not available for a tune up (which hubby bought the lifetime service) twice within a 30 day period. On his second denial/put off by Mikes, he brought it to Kevin and was able to drop it off and pick it up within 48 hrs. BOOM! We both recommend Hangtown and thank Kevin for being a great owner with great service. read more

I've called several times, but he is completely ghosting me. I'm trying to get my other bike back, but no answer. Has had my bike for over 6 weeks and no return calls! It was supposed to take 2 weeks. Reached them on the phone after 4 weeks, told me he was behind but to come on Saturday after 11 A.M. Got there at 11:30 and they were closed! There were two other people that came while I was standing outside and both were also angry because they were told to come pick up bikes also. Both had been waiting a long time as well. I've called many times since with no answer or return to messages left. I drove down today at 1:30 and they were closed again. Recording and online says they are open 7 days a week. Don't leave your bike there! He is nice but has terrible customer service. A return call would go a long way to making me at least feel like he wants my business. I finally filed with Better Business Bureau today in hope of getting my bike back (fixed or not). read more

It's been over two months since I brought two wheels to them for new tires and bearing grease. The work was supposed to be done in 10 days. After three weeks I left several messages. No response. I went back about two weeks ago and they told me they would be done about 5 days ago. Today I went it and they had not started. No phone calls, no importance placed on communication or deadlines. Great bike shop in Placerville! Kevin, the owner provides great customer service. He's a young and friendly guy who is very passionate about bikes. His shop has a range of bikes for toddlers, youth and adults. His prices are also reasonable. If he doesn't have what your looking for, he can get it in a day or two. I am an avid mountain biker and very picky about how my bike performs. He's done some mechanical work on my bike several times now, because I know he will get the job done. Very disappointed in this local business. This is a hobby for the owner, not a business. Dropped off my bike to get a repair made. They are supposedly open seven days 10 to 6. I went to pick up my bike on a Monday and it was closed at 4 o'clock. No sign or anything. I wasn't happy because I live 12 miles away from the store. They don't answer the phone. All you can do is try to leave a message. I called and left a message that I came to pick it up Monday and wouldn't be able to pick it up for a few days. I'm back on Saturday at 2 o'clock and it was closed. It had a sign in the window that said "sorry, closed. back at 11". There's no way of checking to see if they're open because I won't answer the phone. I called and tried to leave a message to ask when they open. But, you couldn't leave a message. It asked for a pin/passcode. I went on on Facebook and sent him a Facebook message, but no response to that either. At this point I'm getting nervous that they are going out of business and I'm gonna lose my bike. I have my wife go by today and likely they were open. She asked about their hours and they said "oh yeah we were closed Monday and Tuesday to go riding." Could they have a sign in the window that says "gone riding"? Shouldn't they say their hours are "open most days." When I was thinking that they were going out of business, I asked the business next door if they knew if the owner was sick or something, and they just smiled and shrugged. So I'm glad that they got to go riding on Monday and Tuesday, because I couldn't. Nor could I go Saturday. I will never go to this place again and I think you should either. read more

Kevin at Hangtown Cyclery was attempting to install ceramic bearings into a new set of Aelous 5 wheels. He attempted to do this without proper tools, ruining the bearings and since these are carbon fiber, when he was pounding out (or attempting before I stopped him) there is a nick in the side front rim! This was confirmed by a local Trek dealer and also by a Trek dealer in El dorado hills. read more

Originally my son and I had visited Hangtown Cyclery as we were just walking around downtown for fun. We were greeted by a very cute Boston terrier and very nice people. I spoke with the owner, Kevin, and told him I'd like for my son to see how to fix bikes. He happily said "anytime!" Fast forward a year later, I brought my son's bicycle in with tires flat as can be. Kevin greeted me with a welcoming smile and I let him know what I needed and that my son's bike was in my car. He immediately offered to help me with getting my son's bike out of my car. He not only told me that the tires just needed air but also patiently showed me what to look for as warnings. He filled up the tires, adjusted the handlebars and seat and walked the bike back out to my car. What great service!!
