I was coming back from camping a little past Santa Barbara and I'm so happy I decided to check out this coffee shop! Amazing coffee! The real reason I'm leaving this review is because of their beans! I got the Brazil and the El Salvador beans. I didn't take a pic of the El Salvador, but it was probably my all time favorite beans. Amazing floral notes and no acidity. This was definitely the spot to go to for coffee if you were visiting the area. While I did have coffee available for me at my airbnb stay, I wanted to checkout a local spot as well. I did not visit during it's peak hours, though there still was a line out the door when I went mid-afternoon. The wait in line didn't seem too long and I was entertained / distracted by the merchandise that was out on display on the way to the register. I ended up pulling two coffee bags -- one for me (Brazil) and one as a gift for my sister (Gibraltar). I would love to be able to try the entire assortment of coffee beans. Love the packaging. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The ambiance is open and spacious inside. Sitting right next to state street, this place had glowing reviews which pulled us here. There's street parking around so parking was not an issue. [[HIGHLIGHT]]There's place was very modern and open. Seating included booths, a sofa, a round table so it's good for all kinds of groups.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The staff was friendly, and happy to help. The glowing reviews led us here, however the coffee didn't live up to the hype. I ordered a vanilla iced latte, and it was definitely not as good.The vanilla flavor was not at all prominent neither was the coffee. Coffee tasted a like a dark roast, but the espresso shot wasn't as good as I'd expect from a local roaster. Overall a very average experience for a cup of coffee. read more

Second visit. The first time I was here there was a long line and they were very disorganized and it was very chaotic. I got a hot cappuccino. I was eating next-door for lunch so I decided to stop in for coffee again. This time I asked for just a cold coffee with no ice to go. I was surprised when it was served in a cup that hot coffee is served in paper with plastic interior. Was told that that's how they serve all their drinks. This is the first time I've ever gotten a cold coffee, drink, in a paper cup!! Not happy because I wasn't gonna drink it right away and with these cups, the coffee starts to infuse into the interior seam very quickly. I worry about the plastic getting into the coffee. Not sure why they don't have plate basic see-through cups they do have compostable ones if they're concerned about plastic. As for the taste of coffee, I really didn't like it. It tasted like someone took coffee and mixed it with some kind of Asian tea like oolong or Jasmine tea. I particularly do not like this coffee taste at all. I actually walked back two blocks to add a bunch of cream and sugar in order to be able to drink it. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I think the best thing about this place is the location across from the scenic Presidio and that they have outdoor seating.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I prefer coffee from other places as far as taste. Handlebar Coffee Roasters was the perfect first stop after a long train ride into town. We came in looking for a good pre brunch coffee and quickly understood why this place has such a strong following. There was a long line when we arrived, but it moved efficiently and the staff kept things running smoothly. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The energy inside felt lively without being chaotic, the kind of spot where both locals and visitors clearly know they are getting something reliable.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The coffee was smooth and well balanced, exactly what you want to reset after traveling. The chai was another highlight, nicely spiced without being overly sweet, warming and flavorful with every sip. Pastries were just as impressive. The cinnamon roll stood out, made with a pastry that reminded me of a papillon cookie, light, flaky, and buttery rather than dense. It paired perfectly with the drinks and felt like more than just an afterthought bakery item. Handlebar lives up to the hype. Great drinks, excellent pastries, and a well run operation that makes even a busy morning feel easy. Came here while on our way to Monterey area. We stopped here early in the morning. My husband and I both needing our morning coffee. My husband ordered a flat white and I ordered a vanilla latte. Stopped by here after brunch as I didn't get coffee from the restaurant knowing that Handlebar was right next door. My friend did get a latte at the restaurant we dined at but wasn't satisfied with it, so she also picked up another drink here. She ordered a vanilla latte, I had the mocha latte. She said it was fine. My mocha latte was fine. Nothing mind blowing or memorable. I liked that this place was so big and had so much seating - they occupy 2 rooms. It's very social, lots of activity, people socializing, kids playing. If you want to study, this place is not it. read more

One of my favorite things to do when travelling is definitely visiting different coffee shops, especially local favorites. [[HIGHLIGHT]]This store is so cool! Like many parts of Santa Barbara, the buildings are steeped in history and reflect the Spanish heritage of the city.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]I walked in my dog (they're dog friendly!) and went straight to look for the menu. My dog immediately found the bike pump and the snacks they leave for dogs.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Service is super nice! They all seem very jovial and cheerful - making it a really nice local vibe. It was great to see the community in the coffee shop. Sadly, the coffee leaves something to be desired. Their menu is pretty standard - you got your flat whites, cappuccinos, lattes - and nothing special or standout from the menu. That's fine - you can still be a standout coffee shop with a standard menu. I ordered two vanilla lattes - one hot, and the other iced with oat milk. Unfortunately, I think my order was misheard as my iced oat latte was missing the vanilla. - Vanilla Latte: Fine. My partner typically orders this everywhere and he said it was fine, but nothing standout. 3/5 - Iced Oat Latte: Already mentioned it was missing the vanilla I asked for, so I'll discuss the other elements. They use a darker roast - thus, making it more susceptible to a bitter taste. That, and I believe an over-extraction or a longer pull made the coffee quite bitter. They also served it in the same cup as the hot coffee. My main issue with this is that I'm a slower coffee drinker, and thus my cup began disintegrating as time passed. Their cups aren't constructed to uphold iced coffee well. 2/5 [[HIGHLIGHT]]It was such a prime location nearby the USPS and is sat in a great historic area.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Handlebars has great staff, who clearly enjoy their jobs, and have a great community surrounding it. It's sad that their coffee is subpar. Strongly recommend you order your coffee hot, to drink in-store, or just avoid. read more

Service was very friendly and welcoming. The ambiance is very spacious with two large rooms and outdoor seating. The room next door from where you order is more moderate to lower noise level. I stopped by Handlebar Coffee Roasters for lunch in Santa Barbara, California. They are located across the street from the historic De de la Guerra mission. The coffee shop is rumored to have had the best cappuccino in Santa Barbara. The rumors are true by the way I also enjoyed a delicious homemade croissant. The ham sandwich is also super delicious. BEST coffee in all of Santa Barbara! I've been coming here for years since 2015. The OG location across from the historic El Presidio is my go-to spot. This place is such a vibe--great for congregating, lounging, people-watching. Saw the rave reviews for Handlebar Coffee and had to come over while visiting SB from LA. It's a cute little spot with plenty of seating inside and out. Service was... fine. Not bad, just kind of "Tuesday morning energy," if you know what I mean. The guy at the register didn't seem thrilled to be there, but hey, maybe he hadn't had his coffee yet. My drink came out quickly and was tasty--on the sour side for my liking, but still solid and worth trying if you're into that lighter, fruity roast vibe. This turned out to be one of the best coffee shops I've ever been to. What surprised me the most was their pricing -- I ordered the largest coffee, with oat milk and decaf, and it was only $7. That made me genuinely happy, especially considering that many other places charge way more for the same quality. The pastries were also very reasonably priced -- I got a bagel for just $3, which was another pleasant surprise. The space itself is awesome -- great vibe, beautiful design, packed with people, and clearly a very popular spot. They have a huge number of reviews and an average rating close to 5 stars, which is exactly what brought me here. And once I arrived, I understood why. People really love this place, and now I do too. The coffee is incredibly delicious, the staff is super friendly, and the atmosphere is just fantastic. Everything was absolutely perfect. I truly believe this is one of the top coffee shops in Santa Barbara, and I sincerely wish them continued success and growth. Highly recommend this place to anyone! read more

Very spacious cafe but I lived nearby I can see myself studying or hanging out in this place. Loved the option of indoor and outdoor sitting. Also love the option of drinking with glassware or taking it to to go. It was a double type of drink day. The cortado was great. Espresso was amazing. Iced matcha to slowly sip. The coffee is reasonably priced, all things considered (fancy flavors, Santa Barbara, crowded location) and the flavor was nice and not one I've personally had before. I ended up throwing most of it away. Their staff was okay, but nothing stood out about their service so the experience here overall was pretty mediocre at best.

On June 5th between approximately 9:00 AM and 9:15 AM, at State st location, I ordered a Strawberry Milk Matcha at the State Street location. The drink I received looked significantly different from the advertised product and appeared improperly prepared. When I politely asked about it, the employee immediately became defensive and repeatedly insisted that the drink was correct instead of taking a moment to understand the concern. Fortunately, another employee stepped in and offered to remake the drink, which I appreciated. What disappointed me most was the customer service. When I asked the employee for his name so I could provide feedback, he told me that I did not need to know his name and that it was irrelevant for me to know. I found that response surprisingly unprofessional. Mistakes happen. Drinks can be remade. What matters is how customers are treated when they raise concerns respectfully. I spoke with a manager afterward, who apologized for my experience, but I left feeling that the issue was minimized rather than truly addressed. I choose local businesses over large chains whenever possible. That's exactly why this experience was disappointing. I hope this feedback is taken constructively because Dune has built a strong reputation in our community and I would like to see that standard upheld.

The burger comes with a side of pickles and has two patties inside. The fries come with two sauces. We chose the special sauce and chipotle aioli. Both sauces were delish with the fries! And the burger was amazing- crispy edges to the patty and juicy center with the brioche bun and pickles. I highly recommend.

The absolute standouts that we kept ordering over and over again were the Elote Cups, which are essentially esquites served in a clever, edible tortilla bowl, the Bacon Poppers, which are cream cheese-stuffed jalapeños wrapped in crispy bacon, and the Riding a Pig, which is smoky BBQ pork with a perfect, crunchy slaw served on bread. Since we had been wine tasting all day, I switched over to a few rounds of their refreshing sangria, while my husband stuck to their beer and absolutely loved the unique craft selection they have on tap. I haven't had any complaints about service, they're usually communicative and will get to you as quick as possible. There are paid parking lots nearby (free after 12a and free street parking nearby). I'd come with friends when they hosted bingo nights and when they have happy hour. During the bingo nights, you have the opportunity to win free drinks and some other prizes. For drinks, I highly recommend the tangerine spritz, Jamaican 10 speed, scooby snack shooter, or the red sangria!

The coffee was fine, actually decent. However this review is based on the horrible customer service and experience. Being an owner of a coffee shop myself and also being in the food, beverage and hospitality industry all my life, I understand fully how busy places can be, so this review has that viewpoint into consideration. After ordering two macchiatos and one cappuccino, my mother waited for our order just like you would at any other coffee shop, 10 minutes went by and a lady who seemed extremely flustered and irritated(she was trying to teach a younger trainee I believe and the place was very busy) my mother complied and sat down, 5 minutes later, my mother came up and received the first macchiato and cappuccino but no second macchiato, the older woman(the owner) told her to sit down again for the third macchiato, and again 5 min later she brought the third macchiato. But all of that was fine, no harm no foul, it was busy we understand. However the way things were handled was what was extremely unprofessional, the owner when coming to drop off the third macchiato dropped it off and pretty much tosses three dollars on the table without a single word and a face full of attitude. Although the gesture was correct and by the book, the delivery was utterly disrespectful and out right rude. Constructive Criticism: If you own/manage a place and are not good with customer interaction and service, do not interact with customers at all. People are at your establishment to enjoy your drinks and ambiance, not to be treated with disrespect. #customersarealwaysright read more

Perfect spot in the middle of beautiful SB, and it's neatly tucked away from the hustle and bustle of State St. There's plenty of seating, so whether you want to take your coffee to-go or grab a cup and sit with some friends, Handlebar's got you covered. I'm simple and go with the latte, which is nice and creamy with some warm steamed milk. Their brewed coffee is a bit on the acidic side, so take that into consideration when you're adding your milks and sugars. Recently they added kombucha on tap, which is awesome! My favorite is the lavendar lemonade. Simple and refreshing for these hot summer days. Ample bike parking in front of the place. Might be kinda hard finding street parking, so keep that into consideration. read more

Arrived here early on a Friday morning and it was kicking! Ordered a Blueberry lemon scone and two vanilla lattes. The wait was short and we able to find a seat! The coffee was served in a glass. A hot coffee in a glass... With no handle... I just don't understand. As for the flavor of the coffee - it was okay. I felt that the flavors were muted and it left me a little dissatisfied. The blueberry and lemon scone was delicious though. It was thankfully moist and deep in flavour. I can imagine it would be difficult to find parking if it got any busier than it was. I had a HOT chai tea with oat milk. It literally tasted like water, so I asked the barista if it had water in it, he said they have a chai powder that they mix with water and then use that and add milk. I very kindly told him it taste like too much water and asked if it's not a hassle if he could remake it, he said he would. He pulled the cold chai water out of the fridge and poured it in a cup and didn't add the oat milk or even bother to warm it up. He handed it to me like he didn't even care. I ordered a hot chai and ended up with cold chai water. Such a waste of money. read more

I wanted to like this place better than I did. My cap was actually bitter, almost sour and I was unable to finish it, my throat was becoming irritated and I had assumed I'd be receiving fresh ground and great coffee. My pastry was okay, too sweet for my taste but the shop offers little in the way of accompanying foods. They were very crowded and busy with a fun atmosphere but that also meant a long wait. I bumped them up a star, from 2 to 3 for being dog friendly.. a very big plus! Also expensive but many shops are. read more
