Agedashi Tofu Soba
Mary A.

Nice hidden gem in East Bay! Not out here all that much, but this spot caught my eye initially for their poke. The menu prices looked pretty reasonable at first glance, so I stopped by. I came on a Wed evening, and I was quickly seated. The interior is quite cute, as it's decorated with Japanese decor. Upon looking more closely at the menu, the Agedashi Tofu Soba caught my eye and decided to order that instead. The soba had a nice chew to it, and the dipping sauce had a lot of flavor. The tofu was quite silky, and fried just enough on the exterior. The sauce with the tofu was absolutely delicious. This meal was very comforting and was just perfect for me. While I'm not vegetarian, it was a comforting non-meat dish. The price point was quite solid for it too, coming out to $15.95 before tax and tip.

seafood ramen with abalone squid and shrimp

We really enjoyed our first meal at Hanami. we were greeted by a friendly server and she brought us menus and chopsticks. We ordered seafood ramen, katsu ramen and a veggie roll. my fiance enjoyed his first time having abalone! We really liked how they prepared the squid as well. My katsu was lightly fried and perfectly crunchy. The veggie roll was fresh and delicious. The ambiance was our favorite part! So many pretty things to look at! And we really enjoyed the music as well. thank you for the yummy meal!

Poke bowl with hokkgai (big ol clams)

Hanami immediately caught my attention because they do traditional Japanese bentos. Think jewel box-style presentation, the kind you might remember if you've traveled in Japan. I went with their poke bowl, which was surprisingly affordable, and loved the option to serve over soba noodles instead of rice. Such a fun switch. The protein was hokkigai (Arctic surf clam), which you don't see everywhere, and it was fresh, clean-tasting, and nicely balanced with the rest of the bowl. Overall, Hanami feels like a quiet gem. If you're into traditional Japanese flavors, careful presentation, and a menu that does something a little different without being fussy, this place is absolutely worth checking out.

Ramen was A1 here Small, cute cozy spot in San Leandro! Street parking only, but wasn't too hard to find. Ramen was packed with ingredients and lots of flavor, especially garlic. Pork was meaty and plentiful!

10/23/25 - Hanami Super Combo F - Unagi Roll, Salmon Sashimi, Croquettes, Tempura Shrimp, Edamame, Ginger, Radish, Miso Soup (not shown)

Our friends wanted to come here so we did. Luckily, I got a parking space right in front again! We walked in and were greeted. There were three other guests sitting at two separate tables. We were directed to the six-top at the back of the restaurant. Glasses of water, a carafe of water and menus were presented. A tray containing napkins and individual set-ups was also put down. The set-ups were probably convenient for the restaurant but also created unnecessary waste as each set was plastic wrapped with a small napkin, wood chopsticks, plastic spork, and paper wrapped toothpick. Service was adequate but lacked personality as if the server was simply not engaged in her tasks. Five guests at our table, five entrees ordered and served one at a time. Seems simple enough, yet when the last entree was delivered, instead of putting it in front of me (the only person without food), she still announced what it was to see where it went. We ordered: Crispy Fried Oysters - 5 - This plate of 5 Oysters and a ramekin of Tartar Sauce was placed on the table as our appetizer. While we each had our set-up with chopsticks and spork, none of us had a plate to eat off of. Salmon Sashimi Teishoku - 3 - The Miso Soup was excellent. Served hot with plenty of tofu and flavor. The Salmon Sashimi consisted of decent sized pieces of fish that were good. The Gyoza were okay but I've always preferred panfried and steamed over deep fried. The Wakame Salad tasted like most Wakame Salads, nothing special. The Mashed Potato was more like a Smashed Potato, chunky, not creamy. The Rice Ball, while tasty was rice that had been smashed into a mold. The Tamago was non-existent. Finally, the Crab Salad was not Crab Salad but Krab Salad. The fresh mango on top was a nice touch, but Krab is made from Surimi (a highly process fish paste), not Crab. Combo F - 2 - Without having looked at our review from last year, my wife ordered exactly the same dish that she ordered last time. She also enjoyed the Miso Soup. The Unagi Roll was okay but not generous with Unagi. There also did not appear to be any Unagi Sauce. Her Salmon was the same as mine. The Shrimp Tempura were crunchy but did not come with a dipping sauce. The Croquettes were crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. Tonkatsu Sauce would have been nice. The Edamame was fine. Our friends seemed to have enjoyed their dishes, but I did not ask them to rate their food.

Shrimp Tempura (4 Pieces). My son ate faster than I could take the pic. They were that good.

TLDR: great menu with LOTS to offer. The food is delicious, just be patient with service as they don't have enough staff on hand. We had a party of 9 arrived just before 6pm but with only 6 four tops and 4 two tops, we had to wait a bit before they would give us 2 four tops together. Luckily, the family sitting at one of the four tops were finishing up their dinner. The waitstaff was obvious trying to do too much waiting on all the tables as well as managing the order pick ups. She forgot to give us water as well as chopsticks/napkins. My son ended up walking up to the cabinet to help fetch the missing chopsticks. When the food arrived, it was heavenly. Everything was delicious and perfectly made. The chef almost timed it so everyone was served at the same time.

This place is cozy, fresh, and really comforting. They offer unique teishoku set meals and combos that you generally won't find at other Japanese restaurants, which makes this place much more casual and homey. The employees are always very kind and accommodating, and the price is very fair for what you get. If you're a lover of sashimi, this is a good place to go to get your sashimi itch scratched. Parking is a bit challenging as there's no designated lot, but there's usually plenty of residential parking you can find in the surrounding blocks. I've only gotten the poke here (it's such bang for your buck!) but I'll definitely have to come back to try the ramen.

Allison H.

This restaurant is super cute with adorable decor. My friend ordered the 6pc salmon sashimi teishoku and I ordered the Tonkatsu ramen with pork flavor. The plating of the teishoku was appealing. The salmon was very buttery and everything in the box was tasty. The tonkatsu ramen had great flavoring and the noodle had a nice texture. I recommend this cute little shop if you're looking for good vibe and comforting food.

First timer here after looking for a local random spot to have lunch. Popped up with great reviews and it did not disappoint. Cozy with such a cute vibe, even with one worker, she got to us quick and efficiently. Great service and food came out fairly quick. We got here and most tables were full but we were able to snag one of the small side tables to grab a bite. Wish it was a bit wider because I got the soba which came in a big tray it barely fit the table with all the extra stuff we got but would def stop by again:)

Hanami wood serving box; chopsticks & napkins

Our absolutely favorite healthy local restaurant in the neighborhood. We enjoy customizing our lunch with the multitude of options to make your bowl your very own. Here's our latest creations that are colorful, delicious and appealing. Enjoy, we look forward to next adventures in the culinary journey. Service was very attentive. Ambiance is Asian themed.

Tonkatsu
Jeff N.

The tonkatsu ramen here is top tier. Comfy, cozy, and just enough seating. It's one of the hidden gems in the city. Service is good, the food is quality, I'd definitely be back on a rainy day.

Sly C.

In a nutshell; such a cozy place to dine in , with good Japanese food. Parking is a bit tough since there really isn't a dedicated parking spot but once you're pass that, this place gives you a really cozy atmosphere as you are sat. The server's very well mannered and accommodating. The menu has a good variety of choices and wasn't too long on the wait either. The food is great and prepared really well and presented nicely. Overall very pleasant experience and a place you should try if you dont mind kind of walking a bit off where you park if you can't find a parking nearby.

Black garlic broth Tonkotsu Ramen
Kenneth T.

Black garlic tonkotsu ramen was delicious. Seems to be right on and been having this every single time we're at Hanami. The rich broth, and the springy ramen noodles. And the tonkotsu was flavorful, tender and just the right balance of meat to fat portion. Tonkatsu was alright, though some pieces were dry and didn't seem to be consistent to the rest of the portion served. Causes me to wonder if some pieces came from another tonkatsu. The miso soup that came with it tasted very watered down and so it wasn't appetizing, and even my kids rejected it. Chicken karaage was by far the greatest let down, not only was the chicken tasteless which should t be the case with true chicken karaage, but seems to be pieces of meat form together with some dough in between giving it a weird texture. It was very off-putting.

A Hidden Mom-and-Pop Ramen Gem Worth Finding!…read more I've driven past this little plaza countless times, never realizing that tucked inside was this small, humble mom-and-pop joint. But boy, once you get your hands on a bowl of their tummy-warming ramen, you won't regret stopping by! Just thinking about it has me salivating all over again. And here's the cherry on top: they surprise you with a complimentary side of goodies! We're talking waffle fries, fried pickles, veggie egg rolls, red bean-filled sesame balls, or popcorn chicken. Hold that thought, because we're definitely coming back to those sesame balls in a bit. OMG, this sweet gesture alone deserves some love! How to order: They have a self-service kiosk if you prefer to place your order yourself, which is what we ended up doing. Or you can order directly from the owner-chef, if I'm not mistaken. Then, grab yourself a seat and wait for the goodness to arrive! What We've Tried So Far: Tonkotsu Ramen (Red) - Spicy OH. MY. GOODNESS. This bowl brings a beautiful kick of spice that slaps the back of your throat in the best possible way! It's that wake-me-up heat that lets you savor the rich pork-bone broth while giving your taste buds a little thrill. And the chili oil on the side? WOW. You can really taste that homemade goodness, and it's downright addictive! I also LOVE their curly noodles. I'm just not a straight-noodle person when it comes to ramen, and these noodles hit the spot. The thin-to-medium cut makes them so satisfying to slurp up with that flavorful broth. If you love spicy ramen, this is a MUST-TRY! Tonkotsu Ramen (White) - Original Yum, yum, yum! If you love the Red but aren't into the heat, the White delivers that same comforting, satisfying ramen experience without the spiciness. A great choice for those who want to enjoy the pork bone broth in all its glory. Tonkotsu Ramen (Black) - Black Garlic Black garlic lovers, this one's for you! If that deep, savory black garlic flavor is your thing, you'll want to give this bowl a try. Now, Let's talk about those complimentary sides! One thing I absolutely LOVE about this little mom-and-pop joint is their thoughtful gesture of surprising customers with complimentary sides. And guess what? The selection was different on our two visits! Extra First Visit: Waffle fries, fried pickles, a veggie eggroll, and those heavenly red bean-filled sesame balls. Second Visit: Waffle fries, a veggie eggroll, sesame balls, AND popcorn chicken! The fried pickles were swapped out, but hey, they added popcorn chicken instead. Not a bad deal at all! Fried Pickles - My first time trying these, and I'm glad they only gave us a few! That crispy, tangy, salty combination can get dangerously addictive. Who knew pickles could be this fun? DRUM ROLL, PLEASE... RED BEAN SESAME BALLS! OMG. These little babies deserve their own spotlight! They're so light, the filling is delicious, and the mochi has just the right amount of chew. That delicate, chewy texture is everything! Here's my advice: ORDER AN EXTRA SIDE TO GO. Seriously, you won't regret it! How sweet is it for a small mom-and-pop shop to offer these little extras? It's such a thoughtful gesture that makes the whole dining experience feel extra special.

The authentic Japanese style food prepared in the Japanese tradition. The flavors of the orient were unparalleled. I was not sure if I was going to find any other restaurant that would compare. Then today, I can proudly say Kaisen don did it. I ordered unagi don, fried salmon head, my husband order chicken teriyaki with miso soup. It was served hot and well prepared. The presentation was excellent and visually inviting. The server was polite and attentive in the traditional Japanese style making us feel very welcomed. The soft Japanese rendition of American jazz playing softly in the background was perfect to set an ambiance of perfection in our dining experience. I most assuredly will dine there again and recommend it to anyone who enjoys great Japanese food and at affordable prices. If you are entertaining guests or are on a date night, choose kaisen don.

First of all- the miso soup had NOODLES ? I've never experienced that before. It was filled with thin wheat noodles, mushrooms and carrots. I didn't care for it. The spicy tuna roll was just okay, just a very small portion. The salted mackerel dish was pretty good, but the rice was super bland, not the traditional sushi rice I love. Made a trip to NorCal and was looking for somewhere open late, and I'm so glad I found this place!…read moreI love Japanese food, and I feel like most restaurants specialize in one particular thing, but this place has a little bit of everything for whatever you're craving: sushi, sashimi bowls like salmon don and chirashi, ramen, yakitori, and more! I ordered the salmon don and some lamb skewers. There is a 3-skewer minimum, which was totally fine because it's hard to stop at just one anyway. The salmon don was fresh and delicious, and the lamb skewers were super flavorful. Prices were pretty reasonable too, especially considering the variety. The atmosphere is casual and laid-back with cute Japanese-inspired decor throughout. Service was friendly as well! One thing I really appreciate is that the staff actually remembers my preferences every time I come in. That kind of personal service makes such a difference and really keeps me coming back. The 16-Piece Sashimi is definitely my favorite. The fish is always super fresh, and the portions are surprisingly generous. With how expensive everything has gotten in the Bay Area, I really appreciate finding a place where you still feel like you're getting good quality and a good amount of food for what you're paying. That's honestly one of the biggest reasons I've stayed loyal to this restaurant. My second favorite is the Oh Fish Roll. The combination of fresh fish and those crispy tempura bits is SO good. You get the freshness of the fish along with that crunchy texture, and somehow it all just works perfectly together. I've been to plenty of sushi restaurants, but this is one of those places where I genuinely look forward to coming back. The food is consistently good, the portions are generous, and the staff makes you feel remembered rather than just being another customer. Definitely one of my go-to spots in the Bay Area. If you haven't tried it yet, I'd absolutely recommend giving it a shot -- especially the 16-piece sashimi and the Oh Fish Roll. I'll definitely be back!
