The food is consistently good. The staff is efficient and friendly. I know it has been difficult for restaurants and I have seen that the quality of the food remains excellent. We normally order the grilled Saba shioyaki as well as beef dishes and sushi; all very tasty. We have been going to Hanamaru for over 10 years and remains a great experience. Mixed feelings about this place.... It used to be our go to sushi place in the neighborhood but the quality of food, service and freshness of food has been going downhill. Not sure why, but am hoping they get their act together soon. Pros: -Its a cute little neighborhood spot, popular and always full of people -well priced food -- Their plates come With soup and salad (both yummy), so you can enjoy an assortment of sushi with soup and salad for under $13. They have lots of combos and bento boxes with teriyaki and tempura - they have an interesting selection of Americanized rolls with names like funky monkey and jalapeño bomb. - KIds enjoy the little sushi boat. Cons: - the food is not the freshest.... The funky rolls With tempura fillings and spicy sauces are probably made with day old leftovers.. Don't feel or taste fresh - rice does not taste fresh - some of the rolls are really big and hard to eat - The seaweed in the rolls seemed really tough and it was hard to chew - my Japanese friends tell me that it's not Japanese owned... Not truly authentic... - The tempura is greasy - Avoid the sushi boat.... I see the same food floating around for hours. Even if you're really hungry, wait for your order to come out.. The same food keeps going round and round and I rarely see them add new plates of food. And the water that the boats float around on gets kind of gross. They need to get their act together! I really like their different rolls (although a little on the pricey side I think). For four rolls it cost $45. My favorite are the Joy Roll, Shrimp on Fire, my husband likes the XXX. Their bento boxes are also very good. I am a medium sized woman and I can finish every last bite of the box and be perfectly full. The Ika fry (fried squid) is cooked perfectly, but there are a bunch of times we would order it and they did not have it. The staff is very friendly, and the sushi chefs are all asian (I know it is important to some people, even though I do not care personally). I do recommend this place. Lion queen was very disappointing. Let's start with the craft of the sushi roll. While it appeared fine at first , when I detached it , it fell apart. I got takeout from here recently and ordered the lemon drop roll, dragon roll, and salmon maki. First off, the salmon was not fresh at all and tasted a bit old. The lemon slices on top of the roll were sliced so thick that it was hard to enjoy the lemon. I usually love lemon slices on my rolls because they're usually slices really thinly and it adds a nice taste. These lemon slices were so thick that it didn't even look appetizing at all when I first opened the box. It was also hard to even eat the roll because the lemon skin was so hard to chew. The California roll of the lemon drop roll was probably the worst I've ever had. Worse than eating a California roll at a sushi buffet or getting it from a Safeway. The only bearable roll here was the dragon roll. Obviously wasn't the best I had, but of all the 3 rolls we ordered this was the "best" one. read more

We ordered the UFO which was all fish wrapped in cucumber with no rice, some type of crunch roll, and the Harley Davidson roll which had seared albacore and imitation crab on the outside (FYI they note on their menu that they only use imitation crab). Overall I felt like everything was too saucy or had too much panko. All the bells and whistles overpowered the flavors of the fish. I came here for the sushi rolls, and while I did not have the opportunity to explore the entire menu, there was enough to conclude: There is a great variety at a reasonable price. The staff is fantastically receptive. The chefs at the bar were warm and accommodating: taking orders amicably, offering helpful explanations, adding a friendly buzz to what might be too quiet an atmosphere--all without being intrusive to the meal. We just placed a to-go order from this shop. in particular, we asked for a Poki Salad with sauce on the side, because it was labeled as "spicy" and we weren't sure if we would be able to handle the taste. When it arrived, we opened the box to discover a container that seemed to hold the sauce. It had nothing but oil. I stirred the bottom to confirm there were no seasonings or peppers, and as expected, it was pure oil. They gave us a cup of nothing but sesame oil- judging by the taste. I would understand if they put the wrong type of sauce in, or if they forgot the sauce, but who would put a cup of complete OIL in? I'm very disappointed by the food and do not plan on returning in the future. read more

*Vegetarian review only* Ordered the tofu and vegetable teriyaki bowl and some edamame as part of a larger DoorDash order to my partner's work. I was pleasantly surprised-- the tofu was very delicately fried (think: agedashi tofu), the rice was perfectly cooked, and I really enjoyed the teriyaki sauce. The vegetables, on the other hand, were undercooked, soggy, and did not taste good. Next time I will just ask that they be omitted. The edamame were well-cooked but bland. I would guess there was salt in the cooking water but not much on the edamame themselves. From what I saw of the food others ordered, I wouldn't feel comfortable ordering raw fish from Hanamaru, but I can definitely see myself craving their tofu teriyaki and rice. Without the vegetables, it's hands-down the best tofu teriyaki I've ever had. read more

Because everyone was drunk during their meals since the alcohol here's sooooo cheap. $5 for a strawberry sake cocktail that tastes completely like sake? Give me! I couldn't stop eyeing the sake jello shots on the menu but decided to forgo them and behave like the unbelievably demure and classy whore that I am for a night. We started with the Sumo Puff appetizer, which was supposed to be a crab croquette. It was dry and filled with chunky imitation crab. I guess you get what you pay for since the appetizers here are as cheap as the alcohol. I tried the toro and it was WOW! As in, "Wow, that was terrible!" That had to have been the worst toro I've ever had in my life. It was pretty evident to me Hanamaru is the type of sushi joint that focuses on creative, Americanized rolls and probably doesn't serve top-grade sashimi. Being the genius that I am, it obviously wasn't me who came up with the brilliant idea of ordering their toro. My dubious suspicions were confirmed when the platter arrived with extremely thin slices of fish that were not only chewy but had a strong refrigerated taste. I ate two pieces and pushed the plate away like a fancy snobby princess. The rolls, on the other hand, were decent, but not as good as Katana's creations. My favorite was the Harley Davidson, which was huge and piled high with spicy krab salad (I'm pretty sure it wasn't real crab). It packed more heat than I had expected and had a nice kick. I ate the Red Dragon and Rainbow Rolls without complaint, but neither gave me an urge to drop my granny panties. Boohoo. No peep show for you, Hanamaru. read more

It's not the RItz, but it is clean and the wait staff is attentive - I recommend Hanamaru. The Sushi Chefs are Japanese, and they are Big Japanese guys. They are in charge. The sushi is not the best I have had but it is VERY GOOD for the PRICE. The Sushi Sashimi combo is Good for $26. Comes with Miso Soup and Salad. The Cold Saki was fine at $12. There's a large convivial Dining area and a good bar. A rotatiorCal anymore, but I visit when ly goes by you to catch your eye, but nobody seems to touch the stuff on this track. The Chefs are good. The Sushi is Good, The atmosphere is Good. Nothing is outstanding, - except the price is GREAT! I have come numerous times over the years and I can say confidently that tonight was the worst service I have ever experienced as a customer. We went out as a family for both of my cousins' birthdays and was very disapppointed with our experience. Our sever from the very beginning was quite unfriendly. The first words out of her mouth directed toward me were "Let me see your id." I had just sat down after a long day of work and had picked up a sake glass that my cousin had already been drinking. I don't know, that just rubbed me the wrong way. I prefer hello first before demanding my id (i'm going on 30 anyway, ya know!!) Over the course of the dinner it really didn't get any better. My mom, bless her heart loves napkins. We had a group of 7 and the waitress only gave us 4 napkins. My mom got up and asked for more, and according to my mom, the waitress gave her a "dirty look." She never smiled at us, gave us a kind word, or even said Thank You. I understand it may have been a busy night but that doesn't mean we deserve to be treated so unkindly especially since we ordered tons of booze and food. Plus we tipped her fairly and not mention we live in the neighborhood. We're returning customers and that's always the best customer, right? I don't know if i can return here after this experience. I made a delivery order through Eat24 to this place and boy do I regret doing that. It says that estimated delivery times are between 45-90 minutes. No problem, that's pretty standard. 2 hours later. Still waiting. Once the driver finally arrives we have cancelled our order through Eat24 (and have gotten In N Out in that time) and the driver tries to tell us that he's so late because he's the only driver. I guess our food not arriving on time is not his problem either. Whatever. We didn't take the food and sent it back as we'd already eaten in that time. I guess the old adage is true, if you want something done right (like getting food in the time promised) then I guess you have to do it yourself. read more

I've gone here a few times for lunch with a coworker, because the lunch is pretty fast, very cheap, and the food is decent. I would give Hanamaru maybe a 3.5 for the food and a 4.5 for the service. As soon as you walk in the door, the staff very enthusiastically says hello. I know they do this at most Japanese places, but the staff here really seems happy to yell hello instead of tired of saying it for the hundredth time. The servers are also very friendly and pretty efficient. From my experience here, the udon is not worth ordering (but I'm pretty picky about udon), the lunch bentos are pretty average tasting (but super cheap), and the vegetarian rolls are good. I really enjoyed the inari and the avocado roll I had last time I was at Hanamaru. This is a good alternative if you want to avoid the Murphy Street lunch madness, but still want to have lunch in Sunnyvale. read more

Terrible experience. I went there for the first time to have lunch and my experience wasn't good for the following reasons: 1. No customer service what so ever. I wasn't greeted upon coming in. 2. After being seated, I was not provided with any drinks and had to ask for water. 3. Had to keep asking for refills. 4. All tables were set with condiment trays. We weren't even offered any and had to grab the sauces from another table. 5. Credit machine failed and they ran our card multiple times. They had to void transactions because they didn't know if we even got charged. I do not recommend this place. If you want real sushi and real service, go to Kenji sushi in San Jose. Every time, my order only took 10-15min before it was ready, the order was always correct and the service is always friendly. They even offer you water or tea while you're waiting. For some reason, some restaurant's foods taste slightly different when you order it via takeout but this place is always consistent as if I were eating in. Compared to TGI sushi in sunnyvale, I would definitely come back to this place.. Their sushi rolls are the right portions.. No massive rice rolls to cheat our hungry stomachs.. I ordered several wrapped hand rolls with unagi.. and crispy skin salmon .. they were delicious and perfect size to enjoy every bite out of it. It was packed from every table when i came here on a friday at around 7pm.. there's a sushi bar, which is pretty long and about 10-13 tables all around.. Service is overly friendly.. and overly just means beyond happy people.. which means.. kathy gets super happy and likes giving more tip to happy people! Overall, my experience and observations with this restaurant are: lazy, inattentive and disrespectful staff; slow service; and average to subpar quality of food.
