Probably would not come back. The appetizers we got were good but the entrees were not great, with the exception of the butternut squash risotto (best dish). Appetizers: - bread basket which came with popover bread was delicious -- this made us hopeful! The bread was soft and fluffy - crispy brussel sprouts - not bad - rosemary garlic fries - nice and crispy Entrees: would recommend the butternut squash risotto. The risotto was deliciously cheesy and savory! We also got the montegro fried chicken salad which was decent but not amazing. It came with a nice Dijon mustard sauce. Items we would not recommend: - crispy tofu with coconut rice = big block of tofu, uncut. It was also not very crispy at all but rather mushy and unseasoned. The rice was ok but could not redeem the unusual tofu serving The waitstaff was friendly but service was very slow; our poor server was running around taking care of many tables so our food came out pretty late; we had to ask for our last dish to be packed in a to go box because it ended up being really dark out (we sat out in the patio area). Oh I'm sorry. I wanted to love this place so badly. Super cute location, cute house, homey feel!!! Gluten free paradise, so many options and so many things you can't typically find anywhere else... fried chicken, yes! Unfortunately everything was bland, like so bland... even with the much needed salt and pepper it still just wasn't very good. Augratin potatoes broke my heart, chopped potatoes drizzled in bland sauce and sprinkled with cheese. Couldn't even finish them. This is a place for the older crowds... But I still hope they do well! Since my husband's birthday was also around restaurant week we decided to choose the Hamrock restaurant to celebrate. I am so happy with the choice. They were so warm and welcoming in this beautiful colonial house turned into a restaurant. Our server was incredible very professional and the hostess gave us personalized menus that said "happy birthday" at the very top. My husband thought it was the birthday of the restaurant so he went around looking for another menu to see if it really was personalized. The food was in incredible. From what I understand risotto is not easy to make. The chef who created this risotto is incredibly talented because it was creamy flavorful and delicious. Everyone else enjoyed their meal so much that they took part of it home so that they can enjoy it again today I don't have that kind of control. Neither did my husband. The dessert was delicious too. Came for a gals dinner. The entrance was confusing. You'd think it'd be where the main door is, but it's on the side and the sign didn't say Hamrock's. The interior is like a big single house, like you're visiting a family member, which I thought was cool. Space was a little cramped though. As for food, it was so-so. One particular thing I was upset about was - one of my friends is vegetarian, but most of us still wanted to have protein for our pasta. I asked for the Cajun pasta with the shrimp and sausage on the side (knowing it obviously wouldn't taste the same). The server argued with me saying it shouldn't be ordered that way and I'm making the wrong choice - even though I said I knew, and it was due to a friend being vegetarian. I just wanted my meal the way I had asked for it and he wouldn't budge until the third time - almost making me feel guilty for trying to accommodate for a friend! We had family visiting and they mentioned having looked up Hamrock's and wanting to go for either dinner or brunch. Timing wise we ended up doing a weekend brunch. The building is pretty neat. I'm thinking it's a large, old historic house converted into a restaurant. We didn't see a lot of the interior as we ate outdoors. There's a nice wraparound porch. We ended up towards the back. The weather was ok, but since it was a little breezy it felt on the cooler side. The service was good. The waitress was helpful with any questions. The bread/muffin basket that comes out was a surprise. Some small corn and poppyseed muffins and popovers. You don't see popovers very often. Both of the items were tasty. The menu is sort of a mix of diner items which are sort of a bit elevated. I went with the breakfast platter with sausage, scrambled eggs, pancakes, and home fries. Admittedly I was a little disappointed as their home fries on the site and a lot of pictures look great, but I was given tater tots. I like tots and these were done well, but I think it kind of cheapened the dish overall. The sausage links were really good, the eggs were a standard scramble, and the pancakes were just ok. Came here on both Sunday and Saturday and had such varies experience. When I was here on Saturday for the first time might I add, I had the best time for brunch! We were quickly served & checked on & food came out fairly quick. I enjoyed the complimentary bread that was provided & the corn bread mini muffins were my favorite. I ordered the open taco omelet and very much enjoyed it. 10/10! I thought the taco shell bowl to hold the guac was such a cute idea & the sauces on top added so much flavor to the dish! Now... when I came back on Sunday for brunch (24 hours later) this experience completely changed. My friend & I were seated but after 30 mins went by we were never waited on. I had to ask the hostess where our waitress or waiter was and she had to go check. Someone did come out shortly after and said that she was not our original waitress and did not know where they are but she could help with the ordering (yay!). I decided to try the brunch bowl this time and the food was missing the sausage that came with the meal. By this time I was starving by the time the food came so I decided not to say anything. The brunch bowl was very plain & lack flavor. This was not my favorite and I barely ate it. The 2 broccoli was such a random addition to the meal & was not stated on the menu lol Overall this place is a hit or miss depending on the day you come & the food you get in my opinion. My wife and I went to Hamrocks for the first time the day before valentines day. It is exactly what you would expect from a historic (1842-ish) local American family-owned restaurant. Cozy atmosphere, friendly staff, reasonably priced food, and good flavor. Easy parking as well. The homemade bread basket was just like you find at home and we highly recommend the shrimp dishes, particularly the bang-bang shrimp / jambalaya pasta. All-in-all, this is a lovely, low-key locale that deserves its spotlight as a neighborhood classic. read more

Hamrock's is housed in a lovely old mansion and the dining rooms have great character. Staff and service were terrific, parking was easy. We were seated at the exact time of our reservation, the food was served with perfect timing. Our waiter was just attentive enough, which we also appreciated. I wish the food was less salty and that the ingredients weren't so "industrial". I had the cavatelli pasta with shrimp and sausage. The pasta was not cooked completely ... at least half of it was still too dense/raw in the middle. The sausage seemed like a sliced hot dog, hardly any taste. We always have a nice time when we go to dinner here. The staff is friendly and the atmosphere is cozy with several different rooms in an older house. The meal is always good but sometimes it's delightful. Tonight my meal was a little cold but we had a large group and sometimes those things happen. I had the three course meal. They started us w/ a basket of bread and mini cornbread muffins; bread was cold and muffins were hard and stale, inedible! We ordered 2 entrees of the meatloaf, a shrimp dish and a seafood pasta entree. The best part of the meatloaf was the mash potatoes and green beans. My wife's seafood penne pasta was undercooked. The noodles were stiff and firm, not cooked long enough. I would NOT recommend this restaurant, after trying it twice. The service was apologetic. read more

Noise was a bit of an issue once the place started to fill up, they could do a little more work dampening the sound. This is a great restaurant if you eat gluten free. So many options!!! Food is really delicious. The $40 3 course menu is a really good deal. I had the salad, my husband had the lobster bisque and it was really good. For mains he had a chicken dish and I had the crab/shrimp cakes. I was initially skeptical because I'm a crab cake purist but I was pleased. Taste was great and the potatoes they serve on the side are to die for. Chocolate cake for dessert was divine. It doesn't seem like they do a lot of cocktails there, just beer and wine. Came here for brunch. The hostess asked if I had a reservation. I said "no" and she told me there were no seats and she wouldn't be able to seat me. I stepped outside, got on my phone, made a reservation, and magically there were seats available immediately. I assumed maybe they were understaffed and just didn't want any additional customers. I thought the restaurant itself was charming. It's an old historic building. Our waitress was sweet but obviously overwhelmed. I think she probably had way too many tables. The wait for the food was very long. We ordered the bread basket, deviled eggs, pancakes,waffles and breakfast scramble. The bread was very yummy... they had delicious popovers. Everything else was mediocre. Not bad, not good, just decent. I will try this place again for lunch (not brunch). I want to sit on their gorgeous wrap around porch. For my birthday, I wanted to try a restaurant in Old Town Fairfax. We picked Hamrock's for their cute interior and exteriors and unique dining experiences (reminded us of Ms Mary Boo Boos in Lynchburg). We both ordered from the three course dinner - which included an appetizer for each of us, entrees and two desserts. We really enjoyed the lobster bisque soup and the salmon deviled eggs. The deviled eggs had a surprisingly spicy kick to them. Our favorite part though - the bread. Absolutely delicious. The lamb chops ordered were on the small side - limited meat and a bit of fat. The lobster and crab ravioli was 10/10! We had hoped for the s'mores cake dessert but there were all out (we went early!). We settled for the chocolate cake and limoncello cake and enjoyed it. This is my favorite restaurant. I love the setting- old historic Fairfax house turned into a restaurant. The chef was trained at the fanciest culinary schools and worked in top restaurants in NY and DC before opening this place. It is cozy and informal. The food is great- traditional American menu, meat and mashed potato style, and NOT EXPENSIVE. I think this must be a labor of love for the chef/owner. I ordered the fried chicken platter. It is a breaded chicken breast with gravy on the side in a little pitcher. Best chicken I ever had. And served with mashed potatoes and carrots. So delicious. The rolls are these puffy air filled muffins, warm from the oven. Coffee is good, desserts simple and delicious. Cozy and historic- not a bit modern. It is hard to find a regular American food restaurant where every dish is prepared perfectly. Hamrocks is a lot like the historic Inn at Mt Vernon but easier to get to. Caution- Noise can be a problem with the hard wood floors, no curtains no rugs to absorb the sound- but you can request a quieter room. Make a reservation to be sure you get a table. read more

After interviewing several caterers for my mother's milestone birthday party with about 85 guests, and not finding what I wanted, I met with Bill Hamrock. He listened to our wants and needs and presented us with two reasonably-priced options for small plates that accommodated vegans, pescatarians, celiacs as well as carnivores. We had been there a couple of years ago so checked the website to see current offerings. On it they had a Sunday $40 3 course lobster menu, choices for starters, mains and desert. Lobster main choice was +$10. We made 5 PM reservation for Sunday, 22 June. After being seated, we were told set menu was no longer available but hadn't come down from the website (it's still up as of two days later.) Disappointed, we ordered lobster bisque(OK, but not great @$7.50), I had lobster ravioli (again OK but...), salmon salad was the other main and we skipped desert. With a glass of wine and a beer, the total was $102+tax. We should have walked out after hearing there was no set menu. Lesson learned. read more

Quaint historical home in Fairfax City so ambiance was cozy and welcoming by the young staff. However, the management did not prepare properly for the advertised Easter Brunch. Our reservation was at 11:45am and we were not seated until 12:45pm due to overbooking, patrons overstaying and general laze faire attitude about the many people waiting on the covered porch. No attempt was made to ease our discomfort by offering beverages or small appetizers while we endured the long wait in a downpour of rain. Since I was contacted 3xs prior to confirm my group reservation, they had to have known that this was going to happen. Thankfully the food was good and the wait staff worked hard to get the tables turned over as fast as patrons were willing to leave. The wait staff gets 5 stars. The management zero stars. The food 4 stars. A little preplanning by management would have gone a long way for a better experience. read more

This is absolutely the best gluten-free food in the northern Virginia area! Their gluten-free fried chicken is amazing. I cannot give Hamrock's a 5-star rating due to the mediocre service and how uncomfortable their small restaurant is. It is very noisy inside because it is so small. The chairs are not the most comfortable which is why my family will not go there. Moreover, Hamrock's closes for a few hours in the middle of the day until reopening for dinner. Many years ago, they sat me for lunch. Then they told me to leave because nobody was available to cook my meal. Needless to say, I was very disappointed. I attempted another time to eat lunch there in the summer on their porch. One of the other customers came up to me and said, "You are all alone!" Of course I laughed it off, and it's not the restaurant's fault that so many snotty people frequent this establishment. I have resorted to having Hamrock's delivered on occasion, and I have never been disappointed. It's always such a treat to eating a delicious gluten-free meal. read more

Restaurant Week Brunch in the rustic old house in old town Fairfax. Solid food and good service made it a nice treat. The lobster bisque was exquisite and the navy bean and tomato was good as well. Entrees of salmon and stuffed Avocado were beautifully displayed.the seafood salad in the Avocado was very good, the chicken curry was okay, really not as flavorful as one might expect. The salmon, while a generous portion, was overcooked and again not as flavorful as other pieces we enjoy at other establishments. Plenty of fresh ice creams to choose from (loved the butter pecan!) and several cake and pie options. Parking could be a challenge as the lot is shared with other neighboring businesses. I had been wanting to try this place for a long time and it was worth the wait! On a nice summer evening, eating on the patio outside is a must. The tables are spaced out nicely and provide an intimate experience while dining. The interior of the mansion (which has an interesting history behind it) is very nice and really takes you back in time. We tried the southern fried chicken and a crab cake sandwich. Both were amazing. The fried chicken portion was huge! The bread basket was the only forgettable aspect of dinner. It was very bland, but I still give them credit for at least providing something to munch on before the entree. Our server was very friendly and quick to assist us. Anna Lee gave AMAZING service the night I came. If I came back I would make sure to have her again. The ambiance was nice outdoors on the patio just beware it's not handicapped accessible as there are stairs to both entrances, and being on the main road it can get a little noisy with traffic. I don't typically prefer New World wines but the Cab Franc was great. We recently went for a Fairfax restaurant week date night! $40 per person for 3 courses each. $100 later we were confused. It was our first time so we hope the experience was because of restaurant week volume. We may try again next year but I would not return with the regular prices based on the quality and portion sizes we received. We were first seated inside. The ambiance is very "antique home" which I loved! It's cute and decorated well, but it in an old historical building and the lack of modern sound proofing shows. We were seated in a small room with a group of 4 women. Immediately after sitting down the sound from the other table was overwhelming. Can't imagine how loud it would be if the other 2 tables were taken! Way too small of a room for the 10 chairs In it... We were quickly reseated outside. Since the front tables were taken, and it was a bit warm, we were the only ones seated in the back. Which was fine, except that it was harder for our waitress to check on us. Which means we waited with empty plates for awhile before we could order our next course. Thankfully the bread basket and butter was delicious so we survived! I had the tuna poke, the shrimp and crab cakes and lemoncello cake. The tuna poke was flavored well but I was confused that it was served in a plastic tiny bowl. I mistakenly assumed "shrimp AND crab cakes" meant I would have shrimp. And. Crab cakes. But that apparently means that there's shrimp in the cakes. Very misleading. It was VERY well seasoned but it was basically deep fried. My sides of scalloped potatoes tasted a little burnt and the 2 bites of zucchini was barely seasoned. Lemoncello was very good and light! I of course tasted all of his too! He had the lobster bisque, the swordfish and s'mores cake. The bisque was small and barely warm but had nice flavor. The swordfish was cooked really well! I wish the orzo wasn't so overcooked and mushy because the sauce was pretty nice too. I dipped a lot of my meal in it to help give my food flavor... The s'mores pie came with a flamed marshmallow on top with was fun! Everything we ate tasted fresh but lacked overall. I like to try to re-create restaurant meals at home, and I feel like it wouldn't be any sort of challenge to re-create what we ate. read more

We had take out for holidays during the pandemic and really liked the food. So, we thought that we'd finally go in person for the Easter brunch buffet. Starting with the pluses: the restaurant itself, in a 19th century house, is very cozy and appealing, if a bit chilly (I was sitting next to a vent and the AC was going). Secondly, the food at the buffet was as good as the food we got from takeout. There was a good variety of items (more lunch than breakfast stuff, maybe becuase we got there at 1:30), all prepared well. Our 17-year-old filled his plate three times, so he was happy All of this was countered, however, by a big disappointment. NO server came to our table. I don't drink, but it would been nice to have been asked if I wanted one. Also, omelets had to be ordered from the table, since there was no omelet station, so we missed out on those. We wanted dessert, so we finally lost patience and called someone over to take our order. She was apologetic, but it was too little, too late. If there hadn't been a buffet, we probably would have walked out. I suppose this is atypical, but it's still unacceptable. Cute and quaint little restaurant in Old Town Fairfax. I have driven by it a couple of times, and was curious as I always see people dining out on their wrap around porch! My friend and I decided to give this place a shot during restaurant week. For the appetizer we ordered what was advertised as their 'Roasted Duck Tostada' and received a plate of tortilla chips with some meat and mango salsa. If i knew that's what I was actually getting I would have went for another option. Most of the Duck was fat and I also noticed they left out the kimchi. Womp Womp. The scallop entree wasn't bad, but could have used some garlic/salt and the polenta was dry. My friend enjoyed the lobster ravioli but I thought it could've used some more flavor also. I have to add that even though we ordered our whole meal within 15 mins of being seated, we ended up having to wait over 30 mins before being served each course. It was pretty hectic. We decided to get our desserts to go because it was already pushing 9pm and we had been there since 6pm... Beatrice, our waitress was lovely. She was so calm and inviting, I enjoyed my few interactions with her.
