I have lived in a number of states, and one of my favorite stores is HRO! Living in AZ now, finally visited the Phoenix store. This chain is outstanding! Knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful staff. Can't praise HRO and all their staff enough!!! Needed to replace an old Tram 1185 and sketchy cable in my Jeep (2M/70cm). I asked Paul (HRO Phoenix) for a recommendation and he took me right to the antenna and cable I needed. Installed it, testing proved significant improvement in RX/TX!!! You guys rock!!! read more

I love Ham Radio Outlet. We affectionately call it the "Candy Shop". I mostly shop online, but was in a pinch this week and made the trek to the store. The place is well stocked with most of what you need and the staff are friendly and helpful. Also, they really are competitive with their prices, matching or beating the price of most of their competitors. They do have some great deals! This day, we were in a bind to find a back-up antenna for Field Day. They had the MFJ-2100 Octopus antenna head that I was looking for. This allows me 4-bands with my hamsticks in a small footprint. I had originally ordered it online, but noticed that is was shipping from the Phoenix store, so called to ask if they would hold the order for pick-up. They happily obliged. This helped a lot and I really appreciated the effort. As I picked up my online order, I couldn't resist picking up a couple of additional items. The ham store for hams! A small store but it's packed with all sorts of radio equipment and accessories. I also enjoyed the fact they had several radios on display that you could actually get your hands on! Many of their handhelds were on display in a display case and it was easy to get a close look at those as well. I took advantage of the coupons sales visiting the store twice. Everything I needed was in stock and a few things I was unaware had been on sale as well. Staff was very helpful and friendly and they answered all of my questions. The store was busy at times but they kept the flow going so there were no long wait times to purchase what I needed. I don't live in this state, so the only bummer with purchasing from the store is the Arizona 8.6% tax! I thought my state was bad! Glad they take credit cards so at least I got some airline miles out of that add-on. I've spent lots of money with HRO over the years and I've never had a bad experience, period. From crank-up towers to coaxial parts, it's all been good. This was yet another positive experience and the reason I keep going to HRO first. The Phoenix Ham Radio store is an ideal example of what customer service should (and used to) be - a rarity in these days of on-line and "faceless" buying. I planned to give my significant other a Ham Radio for Christmas but am not technologically savvy and had no clue what I should/shouldn't buy. After some initial research with his friends and a local police officer, I was referred to the Phoenix Ham Radio store. Bob answered the phone and immediately established a conversation that couldn't have been more helpful. His knowledge and expertise were obvious, and he spent time understating our expected use and misc. other personal circumstances that would influence my purchase. He did not try to up-sell or add on anything and in fact talked me out of buying one item stating it would be something to consider down the road but not for initial needs. Given my nativity on this stuff, a less than ethical retailer could have easily taken advantage and gotten more money out of me. (P.S. The price of the radio and other items were equivalent to what any other on-line source was offering) The other issue was that I needed the item within the next 3 days as we were traveling for the holidays and I wanted to give it to him on Christmas day. Unfortunately, I was unable to get to the store in NW Phoenix from South Tempe due to work conflicts. After a minute on hold, Bob told me the store manager, Rod, would meet me in the East Valley on his way home from work on Monday to drop off the radio, etc. That was amazing and I was so grateful. Yet, a few minutes after we hung up with that plan, they called back and Jim, a part-time employee, had overheard the conversation with Rod and realized he lived very close to me so he volunteered to arrange for a more convenient meeting the next day, Sunday. This was truly above and beyond any normal customer service and it was obvious this type of culture was simply their way of doing business. The radio gift was a huge hit and we have since driven to the store to thank Rod, Bob and Jim as well as gain their assistance in clarifying some of the set-up and programming questions for the radio. As I experienced on the phone, they were extremely generous in their time and expertise as well as being honest about what else to consider and when you might plan to add on - if you choose. No up-selling - no pressure - just real information. Its obvious their primary goal is to simply ensure their customers get what they want, learn to use and enjoy the Ham Radio world. We would gladly pay more for an item that includes this kind of service - something you will never receive when buying items on-line or in the big box stores. Whether you are a veteran Ham Radio user or a "newbie" this is the place to go. I cannot imagine having a better experience and am grateful that the surprise Christmas gift came along with a wonderful story of service and commitment to the customer. read more

Specialty stores are in a difficult place these days. From Amazon to eBay, it seems that everyone is trying to sell you something a couple of bucks cheaper and without state sales tax. Yes, it is often cheaper, but what about the employees at the local store who are willing to fix/set things right when products or services don't work or there are problems? HRO is always willing to stand behind their products and unlike the other sellers, they know amateur radio inside and out, they know their products, and they can help new hams or someone buying a gift for a ham. I've been buying from them since the 1980s and have never had less than great service. read more

It's a small shop but the amount of stock in the place is amazing. They also did a very good job of organizing such a huge inventory into ways that you can see and touch everything. I was expecting the usual stock of 2-3 choices of things, but I ended up spending a half hour poking through a dozen options on antennas for my Jeep. The staff offered to help as soon as I came in, but then let me browse unmolested when I said I wanted to look around. When I was ready to ask questions I got a lot of help and good advice. They really went out of the way to help, not just move me along. The prices are reasonable, not the absolute cheapest, but very good. When you add in the personalized service and wide stock availability, it's a fantastic value. read more

This last year I had received a lot of top quality ham equipment from a life long friend that had passed. That which I could not use I took to HRO - Phoenix and had them sell on consignment. They sold 8 pieces for me at a total retail of $3,871.00. I received a total of $3,097.00 promptly as each piece sold. They won't let you into the store... annoying, but okay. But if you don't know exactly what you need, they are not very helpful. Handed me a magazine and told me to find what I need, which I had no idea what I needed or wanted. Asked a couple questions and they get upset you don't know enough to just get what you need and leave. There aren't any other ham radio places around, so it's a bit disappointing to not have the ability look around and ask questions. We are in some scary times, try to help those that need help. If you're that scared of covid, let people come in one at a time at least. read more

This establishment caters to Armature Radio Operators (Ham Radio). their service and knowledge of the products they sell Is tremendous. The people that work there are helpful, not-pushy, friendly, and even willing to teach you a thing or two. When they're not busy this is a great place for new people to the hobby. I'm still figuring out the various aspects of amateur radio.
