A very cool place. A little on the high end, as would be expected. The bar lounge area is really nice. Great river views. Although we just had the appetizers, eg. Oysters calamari etc. everything was great. Good beer selection too, and some really good looking mixed drinks. Bar staff was great!! Friendly and knowledgeable. I took my daughter here for her 18th birthday dinner; the ambience was great-the restaurant is right on the water, and the views are fantastic. The food was DELICIOUS! She ordered the filet mignon, which was cooked to perfection; she finished her entire meal, which never happens! I had the branzino, which was one of the best that I've ever had. Our waiter Elias was courteous and professional; when we were too full and took our desserts to go, he even added a candle for my daughter tres leches cake. Fantastic place to enjoy dinner and a drink on the river with a picturesque view of NYC skyline. Looks like the place was recently completely revamped and has a very upscale 1970s feel to it. As a Gen Xer that may sound terrible but apparently that time period has made a comeback and this place did it right. Lots of outdoor seating with plenty of space and umbrellas at every table. There were tons of spacious indoor seating with beautiful views of the river as well. Definitely worth a stop! Lots of seafood options but there are steaks and burgers for those non-seafood eaters. Drinks were $$ but well made. I think you can use Yelp to get on the waitlist? When we arrived they took our cell phone number and texted us when the table was ready. Beautiful waterfront restaurant with loud pop music playing, like they do in the drug stores- somehow the place felt disjunct. It's a large place, and where we were originally seated was very close to several other tables, which was also odd. Another strangeness was that we had to ask for everything twice. I'm not exactly sure why. We ordered wines and the lobster mac for lunch, which was plentiful lobster-wise, but bland, cheese-wise. I also wish they had a better wines-by-the-glass selection, but maybe this isn't that kind of place. It's pricey and 'white-tablecloth', but not exactly. Their COVID protocols are great and make you feel very comfortable dining there, either inside (where tables are well spaced and/or separated by glass partitions) or on their gorgeous outdoor patio. And the views are amazing - the Hudson River, Palisades, Mario Cuomo Bridge to the north and NYC skyline to the south. You'll want to be sure to order a cocktail. The bartenders are surly (maybe just busy), so don't expect them to offer suggestions, but there is a great drinks menu and what is delivered is both delicious and pretty to look at. The food is consistently good. A lot of fresh seafood available. Oysters in season. I find it annoying that you have to order (and pay for) bread for the table. The bread is good, but there is nothing special about it - it's just a basket of bread and should be available for all tables. That said, order it and use the spicy oil for dipping; it will not disappoint. The lobster mac and cheese is amazing if you want to splurge on something heavy. And you're sure to have leftovers to bring home for another meal or two! One of the big negatives of this restaurant is that they no longer take reservations. I'm not sure when this policy went into place, but if you are dining with a larger group or have a tight schedule it makes this a no-go. read more

If I could leave 1/2 a star, I would. We often frequent Half Moon for brunch and celebrations with my family. I have a one year old. I called ahead to ask what the wait was like. I was told it was short. I literally live down the street. 5 minutes later I pulled up for brunch and was told it was a 2 hour wait. What a terrible way to treat repeat customers. Lovely Hudson River setting in Dobbs Ferry for a family celebration in August. Got a nice outdoor patio table with great Palisades view, which was perfect for the two toddlers with us. Food was pretty good but not outstanding. Stick with the seafood and fish choices which are fresh and well prepared. Prices are extremely expensive for what you get. A dish of plain, buttered pasta shared by the two little ones was over $30! Choices for kids are not great and not listed on menu. Waiter recited kids menu without the prices. Still, you're paying for the gorgeous setting with a skyline view of Manhattan in the distance. Nice place for celebrations but bring a stuffed wallet. It was perfect for our West Coast visitors. read more

The views is the only real thing this restaurant has going for itself. Beautiful views of the Hudson River and Tappan Zee Bridge otherwise the food is very mediocre. They are trying operative word is trying to emulate gourmet dishes and they fail. The belief that pricing it high equates delicious food is erroneous. Started with some pork ribs that involved short ribs that have met an InstaPot and were dosed in Thai chili sweet sauce that you can buy at most markets these days. The roasted oysters were at least fresh attributing to one of the stars but again involved breadcrumbs and thats its. The octopus over cooked and rubbery on a bed of some purée of a sort. The scallops here comes the other star were not over cooked and were ok but I was underwhelmed at the price point and considering they came on a bed of corn which resembled Mexican street corn that I actually love not at $30+. We ordered a side of potato purée that tasted link instant mashed potatoes and I know this because in my lazy younger days I have made them at home for the kids. The dessert a carrot cake was so so. Bottom line at over $200 for this mediocre meal I paid for the views. Service was not bad but they need to invest in the quality and menu items and perhaps an Executive Chef with the necessary experience and training to charge at this price point. read more

Let's start with the positive. The ambiance and the views of this establishment is very nice. The service and the food is another. We went here for the first time two Sundays ago. The waiter came and took our orders, we ordered appetizers which came out in a timely manner. However our entrees came out over an hour and twenty minutes later. No one came to tell us the eta. The portion of the salmon, and the seared rare ahi tuna lacked taste, and same the portions were small, the lamb chops my family ordered was cold. Another party within our group ordered a steak and we had to continue to wait to flag someone down to ask for steak sauce. We were not even offered bread (was told from the waiter we should have asked for the bread as it was listed in the menu, unfortunately we missed that but I still feel that they could have inquired) or salad like most restaurants would include within the meal. The service overall was subpar and the food portions for the price point were not worth it. By the time the waiters came back we were not even in the mood to order dessert and just asked for the check. I am disappointed I really was expecting more. read more

I used to love going to half Moon in Dobbs ferry with family and friends over the years. However,I had a horrible experience yesterday. There was a hair in my drink so I simply asked to have it sent back to have a fresh one made. A person came over and asked what the problem was; I explained. He then returned a few minutes later with a drink. As I'm looking at the drink it was the same drink I sent back with the hair still on the toothpick around the olive. I went up to speak to the bartender and he was rude, loud and disgusting. The so-called manager then came out and tried to brush it under the rug. Made a new drink and giggled and laughed it up with the bartender. I've never been treated that way ever at any establishment in all of my years! Half moon, you used to be a great place. I've visited this restaurant probably a dozen times over the past 3 years and I have to say, the location is great. Even if you sit inside, you could enjoy a nice view of the Hudson. I haven't been disappointed with the food but I'll admit I've noticed some inconsistencies - sometimes the food is good and sometimes it's acceptable but it's never been bad. For me, the most recent issue I had was with a hostess, or whoever answers the phone. I understand times are different now and social distancing and compliance with CDC regulations has made life difficult for everyone. That being said, going out is different for customers as well and maybe some of us would like to make a reservation ahead of time so we don't make the trip from afar only to wait a considerable amount of time for a table. Seems reasonable enough, right? Well not for Miss Sassypants on the phone because she answered with a tone that made it easy to detect her annoyance that anyone would dare call during business hours and then offered a snarky chuckle when I asked if they could take a reservation. She informed me, with more than a smidge of condescension, that "it's first come first served." Well okay then. I guess I'll go somewhere else from now on. Thanks! read more

MEDIOCRE AT BEST - OVERPRICED BARFOOD AT MANHATTAN BISTRO PRICES It would seem the owners are relying on the location to justify outrageous pricing on what would otherwise be described as bar food on oversized plates. My family and I had been going to Half Moon for years prior to Covid, and had always found the fare to be somewhat pricey but still within reason given the location. Post Covid, the owners are literally trying to grab as much cash from customers as possible before people realize the extent of their usury prices. Our last visit was as a treat for my wife's birthday. We sat on the outside patio area and began our evening with a usual favorite, a pitcher of sangria. What we received was a fruit juice laden pitcher full of ice and fruit with what I would generously grant was a hint of rose wine. It was so weak, we felt comfortable enough to allow our 15 year old to take a sip, who wondered why we would order juice for dinner. BTW, this was $52. Appetizers to share included an order of Calamari ($24) and a Mediterranean Platter of babaganoush, hummus, and pickled crudite ($25). Honestly, these were the highlight of the evening as these were tasty choices and fresh, but the portions were somewhat limited (even the waiter warned us). Then we waited.....and waited.....and waited....for our entrees. After approximately a 20 min wait, they came. My son ordered the HM burger, medium with Cheddar, Bacon and Avocado ($26 + $1 + $1 + $1 = $29.....yes, they charged a dollar each for the avocado, bacon and 1 half slice of cheddar). He received a charred, well done burger of approximately 1/4 pound with lettuce and tomato on a brioche bun on an over-sized plate of at least 16in x 12in, loaded with french fries. The optics seemed to indicate that to compensate for a less than full sized burger, the fries were tasked with masking the otherwise emptiness of the plate. I ordered the fried chicken sandwich with bacon and avocado ($26 + $1 + $1 = $28) which in all fairness seemed to be an entire 1/2 breast of chicken battered, deep fried and on a brioche bun served again on a 16in x 12in plate loaded with french fries. My wife decided on the Plancha Seared Salmon entree ( $40.....yes, $40!!). My following description of what she received is no exaggeration. Again, the oversized plate, with cucumber cubes lining the bottom of the plate as a bed with scattered bits of walnuts and a SMATTERING of date bits. On top was the piece of salmon that was AT MOST 4 inches by 4 inches, 1/2 inch thick. When I first saw it, it was so dark I thought they burned it, but it turns out it was the skin of the salmon which upon closer inspection was seared to the point of leather. The remainder of the salmon was cooked dry, and my wife (who never complains) even commented on how disappointing the meal was. $40 for a burnt piece of fish and some cucumbers. Although dessert would have been nice, we had had enough of the fleecing and disappointment. For our evening, the bill (pre-tip - $223. Add tip of 20%, and VOILA - $267....all for some fruit juice, some burnt fish and a view. BTW, our waiter was extremely nice and helpful....but the overall staff at the hosting station and bar area were disinterested at best, disdainful to have to work. While waiting for our table, we decided to sit inside at the lounge area to have a drink. No waiting service was evident but when I inquired at the bar about some wine, the bartender curtly informed me I had to wait for the waiter who did not show for 15 mins....until the moment our table was ready. The "vibe" was not very inviting If you doubt the veracity of my pricing, I suggest you visit the online dinner menu. As for the quality of the food or service, if you have any doubts as to my review, then by all means visit the restaurant and enjoy the feeling of regret afterwards read more

The male bartender who began his shift at 4 pm on 9/27/2022 was a lying rude and unprofessional individual. Rude to us and all grins and giggles with those that looked like him...
