I would give 0 stars if I could. It's actually embarrassing when the owner (Sharon) is incapable of running her OWN business on Thanksgiving Eve. Considering it's the most well known drinking day of the year in the United States (of America) may I add. She was well understaffed and I witnessed her repeatedly shove other women away from entering the upstairs lounge. I've been a regular here for the past couple of years but I will NOT be returning. Went here on a recommendation of a friend and was completely underwhelmed. My friend and I arrived about an hour early to grab some drinks at the bar. They told us we couldn't sit at an open seat because it was reserved. Not a joke. I thought it was and laughed then the bartender asked me to get up again. I had to check with him when another seat became available. We were seated for dinner and my friend and I ordered the same appetizer but when they came they were clearly two different sizes. The service was good in the begining but our drink orders took a while and out waters were not refilled often enough. The place was suposed to be known for their seafood but it was not up to par and is overpriced. I heard the head chef may have been replaced. So I met a friend for dinner last night at this wonderful establishment. From the moment I walked through the door I was greeted and brought to the table where my friend was sitting. We ordered the escargot and lobster appetizer topped with puff pastry, if I would have stopped at that and left it would have been the best meal I've had in a long time!! Spectacular!! We also ordered crab cake appetizer and each had a special from of the menu. Everything from the atmosphere the music the bartender the food it was just a wonderful experience and I would recommend this restaurant to anyone who wants to impress someone!!! read more

I've been here a few times with a meetup group I belong to, and despite the fancy decor and extensive beer and liquor flowing, they could stand to make some improvements. Their staff on the bar upstairs can be quite rude. The individual in question practically shouted his name at me when I asked once, "Wa-keen!!" Their appetizers are overpriced, and when you want a little something, you end up paying New York prices when there's no need. Also, drinking outside is a nightmare. They send their goons outside and tell you not to sit and drink on the wall. Ridiculous. read more

Try somewhere else in Montclair before you go here, there are better options. I can't remember what the dish was that I ordered, maybe a special - some kind of pasta/lobster dish that was 100% tasteless. We also had a bizzare waiter. More like 2.5 stars. I will rate the meal honestly & accordingly- The oysters were delicious & fresh. The octopus salad was pan fried- dried out, drenched in oil- & disguised w juliene bell peppers. V small & not awesome enough for a $20 appetizer price tag . The shrimp & clam entree w basil wide flat noodle was- 1- shrimp was overlooked & rubbery & 2- the pasta was doughy & a'dente at the same time. But not in a good way. The entree included 4 shrimp & 4 clams for $$$. & not only was the portion sub average for the normal adult; it was more like a soup with the sauce appearing much more like a watery broth. The steak frites were & truffle fries were modestly good. The plate was 2/3's French fries- which were crunchy & tasty. The steak was nothing to rave about, nor complain. The restaurant overall had a nice atmosphere, however the fruit flys flying all around us & hovering by our wine made our experience less desirable. My friend took me to this place since I was dying of hunger and told her I had to have good food. They didn't disappoint! I had the bass, sauteed spinach and a layered potato casserole(?), it was AMAZING! The only thing that would have made the experience better is if they sold Veuve by the glass or mini-bottle. We chose this place because we were coming in from the city and it was right around the corner from Walnut Stn. I would recommend dressing smart-casual as a minimum but I didn't receive any looks for my jeans, t-shirt and members only jacket. We started off with Lobster wontons & Flat iron steak tacos and they were pretty good. For the mains I ordered the Classic lobster roll and the two others in my party ordered the Filet mignon and Salmon. For desert, we had the chocolate ice cream and mini cupcakes. Presentation for all the dishes were very nice and the bussers used a discreet crumb scoop to clear off the table for the next dish; nice attention to detail. The food is ok but the prices don't justify it. The prices justify the service, atmosphere and presentation. Good place to come for couples. Our bill came to over $130 before tip - I always make sure I tip in cash for the servers because they remember that. ;) read more

Great spot for brunch. I have been here twice now. I have had the pankcakes and the french toast. They were both delicious. The perfect compliment are the mimosas. The decor is very sleek and everyone there is very personable. It is very busy for dinner too but I have yet to go here for dinner. Brunch is only on Sundays. There is parking in the back as street parking can sometimes be tough to get. My favorite place to sit here is close to the huge windows in the front. I truly enjoy coming to Halcyon, and the most recent visit was no exception. This is a special occasion place for us and we have not been in a couple of years since the birth of our daughter. Funny enough is the fact that this was also our last meal out since we are about to have another baby and who knows when we will be able to go out next(!!!) :). Truthfully, this is a bit of an odd setup with the fact that it is attached to Egan's and a hallway separates both the cuisine and clientele. With respect to the food it is fantastic! The seafood is super fresh and always full of flavor. We enjoyed a delicious(!!) octopus salad and the dumplings to start. The main dishes were the 20 oz. strip and monk fish special for my wife. The steak was a very nice cut and tender...unfortunately, it lacked flavor which was a shame but I still left the bone to be taken away. My wife was raving the whole time about the fish and I will definitely stick with seafood next time. Lastly, it was unfortunate that the dessert left much to be desired with only a few pies and sorbets. It's just a personal peeve of mine when it's such a limited (much like our server's personality) menu and I was hoping for a molten lava or some sort of chocolaty dessert with ice cream. All that aside, it's definitely a restaurant that is not to be missed and we look forward to our next visit...just don't know when that's going to be. read more

Great place. My wife and I enjoyed a delightful dinner here, despite arriving around 6:30 on a Saturday, spur of the moment thing with no reservation to a pretty packed house. A restaurant this successful can get away with a snooty "tough luck" attitude about that kind of thing, but no such experience greeted us at Halcyon. The hostess welcomed us kindly, and we found a high table for 2 near the bar, where we received attentive service from a bartender who provided full menu and meal service and checked on us just the right amount. (The hostess let us know when a table opened up, but we decided we were perfectly happy where we were.) The food was excellent, from the "salmon 3 ways" appetizer to my paella and my wife's scallops, to the chocolate mousse-cake dessert we shared. Great cocktails too (whiskey sour and a Cosmo). Came here for the first time last night. Planned to go somewhere else but ran into this place and thought to give it a try. The restaurant itself is very pretty nicely done. I ordered the Scallops entree as did my sister. The meal was good but very price at $34 for only 3 small scallops. No bread was offered to us either. There's no place else like Halcyon in Montclair. My husband and I have been coming here for years, and it's really just the best. Whenever we want to go out, we try other places, but always end up coming back. Always sit at the bar if you're able - but don't take our seats. The bartenders are all personable, knowledgeable, and always on top of things. Mixed drinks are solid and strong. The food is great. They're especially good with seafood; the crab cake, fish tacos, and salmon trio are all awesome. The burger is absurdly good; ask for them to grill the inside when they cut it in half - trust me. Off the menu: ask for the steak flatbread. And though we've only done the brunch once, it was really good too! In any case, just go to Halcyon. You won't be disappointed. Well, it's finally oyster season, and Halcyon delivers with an oyster menu 12 deep (something I'm not accustomed to in NJ). Overall dress was stylish, but everyone was enjoying themselves and not being stuffy. I had the Swordfish and parmesan frites. It was quite good, and the portions were perfect. You don't feel slovenly as you're signing the bill. Overall, I enjoyed the place, and will definitely pay them another visit. read more

Am sitting here right now...love the atmosphere and feel. Disappointed in the service... we ordered appetizers that did not come until after the entree. And we waited about 10min to get silverware for or entrees. It was very frustrating. The food itself was very tasty, but when you miss part of it because they leave it off the order or bring it late it ruins the dining experience. Additionally, they still left those items on the bill and we had to have the bill corrected at least 2x. I had filet mignon..and was not even asked how it should be cooked...came out well done, which I would have preferred medium rare. When we ordered desert the waitress came back because 2 of the 4 deserts we ordered were out. As tasty as the food was, the overall dining experience was lacking. read more

The food was worth the wait, the seafood paella was delicious, just the right amount if spice without everything in the dish tasting the same and the bourbon salmon and black rice was cooked perfectly! Always enjoy coming here for cocktails and food at the bar. Flatbread (pizza) of the day is always good and the tacos are delicious. Bartenders are always on the money and we always enjoy eating at the bar for this reason. We have sat at a table for dinner many times and always enjoyed it as well. Decor is beautiful. Great place to meet friends for drinks as well if you are over 30, since the crowd is usually 30+. We attended at private birthday party here in the space on the second floor and it was fabulous.
