Alcohol. Caffeine. Nicotine.
Damn right. I love it.
I've been coming to this place off and on for a couple years, since I've moved to Austin. The atmosphere here reminds me of my cool uncle; fun, intelligent, and a bit mysterious.
A quick lick on the 3 majors, plus a couple others:
Alcohol.
The selection of alcohol is wonderful. Wines, Liquor, Liqueurs, Beer, you name it, plenty of each. The prices are standard for each.
Every time I've come here, I've been treated well. On a recent meetup with a friend to smoke cigars, drink scotch, and talk noise, we had been in the deadly afternoon heat, enjoying our cigars and scotch and decided to venture in for a reprieve.
On entering we were desiring more alcohol, of course, but in a more refreshing form. When we declined the girly sounding mojitos, we asked for help from the barman and he gladly described the perfect cocktail: The St. John.
A deliciously cool mojito-style cocktail of gin and ginger ale with muddled cucumber and basil.
It was superb and a treat for both of us.
Next Commandment,
Caffeine.
I don't tend to deviate much from the standard cold brew, black--or drip, black--but the coffee has been wonderful and adequately priced every time. The iced coffee is perfect for this heat, too. Just don't mistake it for water, or you'll end up with a stomach-ache.
The Third and Almost Final Commandment,
Nicotine.
The quickly fading, and soon to be black-marketed element of wonder. The prices of cigarettes are comparable to other places downtown and their selection of cigarettes is strictly amazing, very comparable to even the best tobacconists.
I would know this because I've worked for one.
The cigar selection is quite adequate for a cigar smoker and you would be hard pressed not to find something to enjoy. However, the prices of the cigars are a bit steep; nearly a 3 times mark-up compared to some tobacconists, but that is neither here, nor there, based on the pure fact of convenience.
The Fourth and Quasi-Final Commandment,
Food.
I haven't had a lot of food here, honestly.
I've had the turkey brie panini with mushroom pesto and side salad, which was excellent and comes with the sandwich, salad, and coffee(iced or hot) for about $7.50. That's a superb deal.
The next thing I've had was the s'mores. That made a great little novelty in the randomly cold winter days. Pretty simple, but a treat and not badly priced.
The Fifth and Final Definitive Commandment to Excellence,
Atmosphere.
Like I said, a favorite uncle. It's mellow, has something to say, artistic but not pretentious, and it's been around long enough to get it right. Leather couches surrounding coffee tables inside, comfortable aluminum and black vinyl weave chairs outside. The normal bar area with stools, tall tables and tall chairs, and normal height tables and chairs, inside as well.
The art on the wall is consistently changing, always interesting, and I hear they even have live music.
All in all,
Let the nicotine fill your lungs, the alcohol and food fill your belly, the caffeine constrict your veins, and the atmosphere intoxicate you.
Join the experience, it's highly recommended.
