Mixed Plate (Chicken & Lamb over Rice)

We've been meaning to post a review for this location of Halal Munchies - finally as we grabbed our lunch today - was reminded to finally do it. We are big believers that people need to take the time to recognize when things are right; especially in these times where people are too busy to care about the next guy. This Northern Blvd location has been here for several years, having taken over another Halal spot. We've tried HM at another location and were not impressed but this location is definitely different. First of all, the guys running this shop and all of the staff, are always efficient, patient and professional. They're always busying themselves cooking or organizing or cleaning up and are always pleasant and courteous. Second, the open-kitchen is very well taken care of and clean! This is actually a rare and pleasant surprise because lots of fast-foodish joints have messy kitchens. You can clearly see everything laid out and how clean it is. When it comes to food, that is a huge point for us. And, their food - is good. Priced for value, good portions and they make your order fresh, even when ordering ahead on an app - they put together the order when you walk in so that it's all hot and good and not just sitting around getting cold. We love their hot sandwiches like Philly Cheesesteak and of course, their Halal meats over rice like the Mixed Plate. They have side options like hummus, salad, french fries and their french fries are delish! If you're looking for straight down dirty excellent meat over rice like the carts in the city - sure, this may not be it. But, all in all, with its location, good prices, good service, good food - it is definitely a solid pick.

Is the menu that difficult? I didn't even order online, I walked in and literally said Lamb Over Rice no fries. Get home and get ready to eat. Open my dish, it has fries and chicken over rice. Hello? Don't get me wrong, I am not allergic to chicken, but Hello? I paid for my food, and it wasn't even busy. I called and they asked me to come back and they will correct it. Nah, I ain't going back there again. One more local customer not to worry about.

We ordered from Halal Munchies due to a UberEATS deal with their Chicken Over Rice and it came with a side of seasoned fries and salad (shredded lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber). It was good, but I wouldn't say it is significantly better than other food carts that I've tried from considering it is a little more expensive. We also asked for sauce on the side because we wanted to adjust the amount of hot sauce, but it was put on top. I think I would only order again during promotions.

Food was great I found a deal on UberEats and they didn't short on the food. Quick service and pick up on arrival. Got the combo over rice with fries and salad x 2. Always a great choice when you have a halal craving.

Visited a friend and we ordered food from here. I had high expectations since I've heard good things. Best I can say is that it is good halal food. I've had better and I've had a lot worst. Definitely one of the best I've had. I ordered chicken and lamb over rice with salad and fries. The fries were great, made to perfection and well seasoned. Nice and crispy! As for the rest of the meal, it was delicious. They packed a lot of food in the container. I had enough for leftovers. I felt like I got good value out of my food. My only complaint is the container the food came with. The bottom should've been flat.

Chopped cheese sandwich was good, but the wings and chicken gyro was okay. Need to find another halal spot for my gyro/halal food.

I had a great experience here. Quality was fantastic. Decently priced too. I actually switched from my old halal spot to this one. Plus they're open late for late night eats! Overall, positive experience. Would recommend.

Please do not be fooled, this place use to be call Halal Hot Spot has now been bought over. I knew I should have stuck to my instincts and walked out once I went in and things were changed around. You walk in and 3 people are just sitting around, the grill seemed to have been off for some time. What the heck I gave it a go and stayed and ordered. First the staff is very unfriendly, being new and trying to win customers to stay and come back, this was by far the opposite. I went in around prime time normally which was 6pm, old spot had people inside and ordering. This place was empty. I tried to start a little small talk and said, oh you guys changed the name and the lady looked at me and turned her head and never answered. Also all three seemed very angry looking at me for even coming in like I slapped their mother or something. So I thought I gave it another try to talk and asked "when did you guys take over"? She now responded and said I don't know what you are talking about we are new and been here for two months. Anyhow, now for the food. I ordered just the basic Chicken and rice. First off the guy went to scoop some rice out of the rice cooker and then scoop some chicken that I couldn't see from the side. Who knows how long that chicken has been sitting out. So I bring it home to eat and of course the first bite I took there was two chicken bones. As for the taste, the chicken was very dry and without much flavor. The rice was ok, but just some long grain rice. The white sauce must have been mixed with lots of water as it pretty much had no flavor and tasted like water. Sadly as much as I hate to waste food, I had to throw 3/4's of it away. You can save for sure I will not be coming back to try again since if they say they been there for two months and still can not get it right, it's only going downhill. Really missing Halal Hot Spot!

Quick chicken and lamb combo over rice, salad and fries. I always ask less rice more salad. White sauce and 2 strikes of hot sauce Best halal this side of queens in my opinion.

We were greeted with a complimentary popcorn, which was delicious! The waiter was also incredibly attentive to our table and made sure to check on us occasionally. The ambiance is dim, kind of like a bar restaurant without too much noise. It's a great spot for a date night out. We ordered 20 pieces of wings, half with soy garlic and the other half with mango habanero, tteok-Bokki (with cheese) and truffle fries. I personally do not handle spice very well, however the mango habanero was surprisingly good and not too spicy. In my opinion, I thought the tteok-bokki was spicier but not too spicy to the point where I couldn't take a second bite. Although I have been to many other Mad for Chicken chains before, this is my first time in the Forest Hills location and also my first time publishing a review for this restaurant. I would totally come back!

The thighs/drumsticks are better, but the chicken wings are always too dry for me. With that said, Mad For Chicken chain has been around for a while, producing one of the more tender and juicier piece of chicken. Unfortunately, we did not love their sauces at this location. The soy garlic felt weak, while the spicy soy garlic was not spicy. Serano chili was okay but nothing special either. Our favorite thing that day was their Bulgogi Toppoki Japchae. It was pretty tasty. Might come back for this dish and give their chicken one more chance.

First the owner is the one taking your order he is very nice and professional. I had a lot of questions he answered all of them and I as very patient. The fish was fried well but not overly fried that it was dry, I liked that. Next the shrimp was a good size and had the right amount of batter; also very good. The macaroni and cheese was not for me but that does not mean it was bad; I like my macaroni and cheese simple and for me this macaroni and cheese was overly seasoned in my opinion. So it depends how you like your macaroni. The other item, I ordered was off the light bites which is a great idea because some people eat small amounts from that menu I got the wings and fries. The wing sauce I got was the honey jerk and I liked it a lot. The wings were really good and so were the fries. I also ordered the guava lemonade which was good and the lobster and shrimp enchiladas and a which was also really good, it came with a sauce that is delicious. Sometimes at fried places; the food makes you sick but not here. I look forward to trying more things off their menu. Also we did order the sweet plantain with oxtail; it was good but the amount of oxtail was not enough for the thickness of the plantain; but I know that with that comes rising the prices which he probably doesn't want to do so; it is worth a try. What a neighborhood GEM!! Kuku Korean was fantastic! Fresh, tasty food at reasonable prices!…read more We (6 of us) were in the neighborhood for a Valentine's Day celebration and searched Yelp for a good ethnic restaurant in the area. We came across Kuku Korean and said YESSS, this is the place to go! The only wrench in our plans was that Kuku Korean doesn't take reservations; not even on Valentine's Day! They warned us that they expected to be very busy that evening, and to expect a wait. Ok, we made plans to go, but also made a Resy with another restaurant close by, as a backup plan in case there was a long wait for a table. But really, Kuku Korean was our preferred first choice. After our V Day event, we rushed over to Kuku Korean to see what the wait time was for a table for 6. It was just after 6pm, and the stars were aligned for us, because we got the last large table available! Woo Hoooo! Happy Valentine's Day to us!! We quickly cancelled our Resy with the other restaurant (sorry!) and perused Kuku Korean's fabulous menu. Our MENU (shared by 6ppl): ~ Seafood Pajeon ($24/large): Crispy battered pancake made with green onions & seafood (mussels, clams, squid, and shrimp). This was phenomenal! So much seafood and such a comforting dish...get this! ~ Veg Japche ($21): Stir-fried Korean vermicelli with Kuku soy-garlic Japchae sauce and assorted veggies. This dish was also available with various proteins but we opted for Veg since we were ordering other meat dishes. This dish was so flavorful and delicious. ~ Kuku Bibimbap ($24): Seasoned vegetables over rice, topped with a fried egg. Served with Kuku spicy bibim sauce. Again, you have the option of adding protein to this dish but we kept it veg. Another great dish! ~ Pork Galbi ($28): Char-grilled Pork ribs marinated in Kuku sauce, served with sauteed onions. Served with kimachi, daily banchan & purple rice. The pork was cut in thick slices, which was surprising, but wow, this was phenomenal! So tasty and lean, and just delicious. ~ Beef Bulgogi ($33): Sauteed thinly sliced beef rib-eye marinated in Kuku sauce with mushroom, Served with kimachi, daily banchan & purple rice. Another phenomenal dish. Bursting with flavor. -- Spicy Squid ($28): Stir-fried squid in spicy Kuku gochujang sauce, onions, hot pepper and carrot. Served with kimachi, daily banchan & purple rice. This squid was prepared perfectly; not over cooked nor rubbery! Great dish. - Ban Chan: generous unlimited servings; fresh & delicious. These 6 dishes, plus Ban Chan was perfect for 6 ppl to share. We finished everything and were fully satisfied. Every single dish was delicious and we ALL said we wanted to return to Kuku Korean to repeat some dishes and try new dishes. Customer service and atmosphere were great. The busser staff did an amazing job and were even more attentive than our server (who we only saw twice)...kudos to the bussers! They were so hard working, with a smiling, friendly attitude! Give them a raise! Looking forward to a return visit to Kuku Korean...hopefully SOON!!

Tteokbokki is considered street food and its literally rice & fish cakes. And they give you 3 pieces of ginmari. No reason it should be $19. Then for rosé flavor, which is literally just adding heavy cream to the sauce, is an extra $6. Then we ordered the 10 wing + 5 drumstick combo and we asked for half/half sauce assuming half of the 15 pieces are one sauce and the second half is another sauce. First off, they charge you $2 for sauce, which is fine but tell me why they charged us $2 FOUR times. So $8 total for sauce bc they separated the 10 wings into 5 and 5 and put one sauce each and they charged $2 each for that. And then they separated the 5 drumsticks into 3 and 2 and put one sauce each and charged $2 each for that. So total for 10 wings & 5 drumsticks was around $44. I've literally been to every korean fried chicken place on northern blvd and never have they separated the chicken like that and charged the sauces that way. Like why are you charging us for sauce 4 times when it is one single order of chicken. Never coming back here. Its a legit rip off. On top of that, they charge you for to-go containers, which is free at every restaurant. They just charge you exorbitant prices for literally every single thing here. We spent $85, not including tip, on tteokbokki, 15 pc of chicken & an order of fries.
