If it wasn't for the fried onions I wouldn't go back. We started with the fried onions which are a tradition and wonderful. Crispy with a nice batter and not to greasy. 2 of the 3 burgers were cooked correctly (Medium) but still not juicy. They lacked seasoning and there are so many better burgers to be had. Good lunch at Hackney's! This time was the one on Lake. Parking can be tricky depends on the way you pull in. COVID-19 was back in full swing so this visit it was ID check/vaccine card at door. (I don't mind it at all, yet didn't see it posted or should check website maybe for a update or call ahead and ask?) Seating was good, so was our server. Only small complaint is they are know for a good Hackney burger (it is...) On Rye better but the bread doesn't hold up the power of the burger and tends to fall apart... read more

This place WAS an institution when I was growing up, but that was nearly 40 years ago. Now the remaining locations are showing their age, the menu hasn't changed, the median age of the people that dine here is probably 70 (remembering what the place used to be), and the kids who took over the restaurants from their parents are (shamefully) squeezing every penny out before the inevitable day when there are no customers left and the land is worth more than the business. It's hard to believe there is any management here. Or anyone left in the kitchen who gives a damn either. Ordered the onion loaf and it came out a shade of brown nearing black (see my picture). No salt so it lacked any taste too (carbon not withstanding). Ordered a burger medium rare and it came out somewhere between medium and medium well. Was supposed to be 8oz, but the 1 inch of extra bread all around the burger made me think it was much less. Can't say I will be back. Gave them many chances over the past 10 years. But other than that the customer service was amazing and they handled my sister's wedding reception very well super friendly and professional. The food and drinks are good! Was excited to try this place out after hearing about it on TV and via word-of-mouth. It is a quiet but welcoming setting that is reminiscent of old-school lunch places. The hostess and the waitress both did a nice job. As for the food itself, it was good but not anything too memorable. I got a side caesar salad that was very good with crisp lettuce and quality ingredients. My friend and I each ordered a Hackney burger with cheese on the in-house baked rye bread. Each burger came with fresh-cut toppings, including a thick slice of onion. Overall, a solid burger, but again - nothing to write home about. The fries were average. If the salad weren't very good or the ingredients weren't so fresh, this would have been 3 stars, but I would imagine that some of the other dishes are very good. My perspective is different from many of the other reviewers, who've been coming here since childhood. Somehow I (and my husband) made it well into adulthood without visiting Hackney's. We've passed them many times, but until I read the raves on Yelp, I was never compelled to stop in. So as a newbie, I give a solid 4 stars. True to the hype as far as burgers go. I had an unadorned Hackeyburger (no seasonings, no mushrooms - only cheese) that was perfectly cooked. True medium. I loved it. My husband also praised his bleu cheese burger - he said he tasted the bleu cheese in the burger, as well as what was atop the patty. We had to try the onion loaf. We passed about 10 signs touting it on the way to being seated : no trans fat, they proclaimed. True enough, but there was enough grease to lube a car. I liked that they didn't overdo the breading - it actually clung to the onion, which had a nice sweet taste. But the grease overload forced me to stop after consuming about a quarter of it. Overall, a nice atmosphere. I liked the dim lighting with the individual lamps on the tables. Big booths. Definitely a family place, and there is a preponderance of senior citizens who eat here. I'm fairly sure we were the youngest customers in the room, which never happens. Not a complaint, just a FYI. Not a beer drinker, but my husband is and - for what it's worth - he said their beer menu was extensive. The food portions are big, so we were too full to try any dessert (although the Snickers ice cream pie sounded tempting). We'll plan to come back in summer, when we can eat on their outdoor patio. read more

I guess this place so an institution in this neck of the woods, but I thought it was just okay. It's a large space with plenty of private rooms for events which all were in full use on the night I was here, Service for the private event I was at was pretty sketchy and I finally gave up on the server and just went to the bar to get a drink. But that was clearly where the problem was as there was only one bartender working the bar and this place was packed! Service got a lot better once I left the event and decided to eat at a booth in the back. Our server was terrific and took it all in stride even when some drunk guy we didn't know decided to sit at our table and order some soup to sober up ( it's just that kind of a place!) My food was okay- nothing remarkable that would have me driving all the way to Glenview to get it, but okay. I had the salmon and a salad and my friend had a patty melt but they also have other sandwiches, entrees and salads. And the decor can only be described as old and kitschy. Parking here is probably easy on a normal night as there is a huge parking lot but it was so busy on the night I was there that I had to park in some auxiliary lot and hike in. And the other thing that sticks in my mind is the average age of the patron here- well over 65 which is what their menu seems to appeal to ( haven't seen cottage cheese as a side dish in a long time) Hackneys is like a throwback to another time and place. As much as I love hosting parties in their basement I'm more likely to go elsewhere for a beer and a burger. They have priced themselves outside of my comfort and value zone. $12 for a 1/2 lb. cheeseburger, (I swear it's not a half pound) $12 for a really crappy ruben, (where's the beef?) $9 for their famous brick of fried onions and drinks are too expensive. Hackney's has really gone down hill in the past few years. Last night I ordered a Hackney burger well-done on dark rye, and a 1/4 serving of an onion brick. First, the burger came back medium, on a regular bun; no dark rye. The onion brick was tasteless, not up to their well-known standard. And the fries, AWFUL! They were so overdone, I couldn't eat them! Even the server said "Here are your fries, a bit "crunchy"." They really looked and tasted like they were reheated from a previous frying. As everybody says, this place is an institution. The place oozes character. However, they've gone a little bit downhill lately. For some reason, despite their mass production of unlimited french fries, they still haven't figured out how to cook them all the way through! There's nothing worse than an undercooked, limp, greasy potato. This has seriously happened about 2/3 of the time I've received fries at this location. 2018 update, still limp nasty fries. Why is this so hard for them after 70 or so years? They have a decent draft beer selection, with an emphasis on traditional German bees. They have some good craft beers, even one from a brewery in Mundelein. Also, reportedly they lost their coleslaw provider and as a result it went from being my favorite coleslaw to one I won't even touch. I'm not a colesaw person normally but they used to have a delicious one with a bit of horseradish in it. And lately it tastes different with each visit! I believe the traditional way to order a Hackneyburger is on the dark rye with raw onion and no cheese. At least that's how I like it. And there's a long-standing urban myth that they deep fry their hamburgers. They never have. I still prefer the Hackney's on Harms during the summer sitting outside. Nothing beats it! read more

I've been to this place twice and I would definitely return! The pros are that the food is good, the onion loaf(what this place it known for) is indescribably delicious, and the waiters are fast and courteous. The cons are that it's always dark inside. The hanging lamps look they they came out of my 90 year old grandmas house. They are painted glass and very dim. The overall feel of this place reminds me of the 1930s era. The tables are also really close together. My chair was practically touching the guy sitting behind me. I couldn't even get out of my seat to go to the bathroom because I couldn't push myself out due to my chair touching the guy behind me. Once I did get out, the tables are so close, it's impossible to navigate because you can't walk between tables due to their closeness. I felt so trapped! I would go back just to have the onion loaf. The burgers were decent, not great. It was also $13 for my mediocre burger. The total was a little pricey for 2 burgers, fries, 1 pop and 1 wine. I washed it down with a Domaine Dupage from our friends at Two Brothers because this location specializes in local brews. You might still be able to get a Sprite if you like. We arrived at 7:05pm. Waited 30 for a table, the restaurant was very busy. After sitting down the waitress took our order for appetizers and we received them in a reasonable time. I ordered a burger & my date ordered soup and salad. At 9pm no food. We noticed that others around us were also frustrated at slow service and incorrect orders. We decided to leave without our meals. Met up with some friends for dinner here. We all got some kind of burger...I had a bleu cheese burger which was fantastic...cooked how you like it served with fries and their cole slaw. Had Green River Soda with it....most of my other friends had the Hackney Burger which looked really good as well. Then for dessert we all had apple streudel with ice cream on the side...wow talk about tasty and delicious! When I walked in I felt like I could have been in an old pub in Germany or the UK...they were all decorated for Halloween and fall...there is a very cozy feeling when you're in here enjoying the great food. Is it the best burger in the area? - well probably not- but where Hackney's falls short in some food groups it makes up in charm - in this eater's opinion. Adorable....especially on Halloween weekend- full of pumpkins, patrons, and wait staff in costume. Stuffed burger is good and certainly way filling. I am from the N.E. so this burger on toasted bread is different and I like that they make the bread in house. It needed to be toasted longer however. It was quick to get soggy. The onion loaf is about the best you will ever find anywhere.....and the turkey on the club is roasted in house and not sliced too thin and it was served with a nice side of fresh fruit. This is the second time I have eaten here and I find it lots of fun and look forward to returning to Northbrook sometime when we can dine on the deck. Took me a while to get to this review but better later than never... and I really hope the staff reads this review because it's not about their food, but the waitress who helped us. I do not recall her name but she was extremely rude. When we asked about certain items on the menu she simply stated "I am a librarian, you can ask me about books, but I do not know about anything on this menu". Ummm... ok, that is a good way to start off serving your table. We all ordered our food, she came back once in a blue moon to check on our drinks while we were waiting on the food to come, but for some reason she was at the table next to us several times, maybe they were fellow librarians??? It almost seemed like she would deliberately avoid our table for some reason. We are super friendly and happy people and are always super nice to our servers, not demanding like some patrons can be. When the meals came my mom asked for a pickle to go with her burger and she said "just so you know hackney's does not serve pickles with their burgers". I am pretty sure all of our mouths dropped at her response, it was just about the rudest thing I have ever heard from a server. It would have been one thing if she laughed or mentioned it in a comical or friendly way, but the tone of her voice was absolutely absurd! Good thing the food was great otherwise I would give less than 3 stars. Whoever this waitress was needs to be reviewed and talked to about her attitude. (We have been going to Hackney's for years, my grandmother's home was located in Glenview so we are regulars, not just the ones who come in on St Pat's with the rest of the world lol.) Hackney's is a North Shore institution that will hopefully be around for generations to come! My family loved coming to the place when I was a child and now I enjoy taking my family here! This location is a large mansion that has been converted into an awesome restaurant. It looks pretty much the same as it did in the 80's - I love it! There are old photos, nick-knacks and Irish art all over the place. Many of the staff seems to be have been there for quite a while, but the service is top notch. The burgers are the star here at Hackneys. They grill these beauties up fresh and offer them on the fresh bun of your choice (including pretzel rolls or homemade rye bread). The meat is always juicy and cooked just right. I really like the pretzel bun, but the rye bread is awesome on a Patty Melt. They grill up some great onions - so be sure to ask for those. Every sandwich comes with some decent fries, but try the sweet potato fries for an unexpected treat. The onion rings are unique - a whole basket of onion rings smashed together. You have to try them to understand how good they are. Potato skins are also great accompanied by the house made apple sauce. I highly recommend Hackneys for an awesome burger and unique dining experience. read more

One of the classic restaurants from my childhood. I love the burgers and the atmosphere that they have created. It feels like your home every time you walk in for a meal. It starts out with you walking in to what seems to be this beautiful mansion that welcomes all comers. Then in the entrance decorated with family pictures from the years. Everything thing feels so genuine and warm. The food is delicious and worth the trip. My favorite is the onion haystack and the classic hackney burger. The haystack is thinly sliced onions deep fried together in a fry basket "square shape outcome". Then there is the classics hackney burger that is no frills straight up delicious perfectly cooked burger. Hackney's is not a place to find exotic fair but a family oriented restaurant that does simple great. I highly recommend visiting and creating your own memories read more

After being seated and told our waitress would be right with us it took about 15 minutes for her to take our order. We ordered food and 2 drinks. Waited 25 minutes for drinks and they never arrived. Assuming they were forgotten about, I walked up to the bar to order because the waitress would not come to our table no matter how we tried to flag her down. When I got to the bar, I waited several minutes for a bartender to acknowledge me despite there only being 2 people at the bar. there were two men grabbing things from the bar and they walked off without saying anything. The bartender returned and tended to the servers first before finally asking about my order. Once he took my order he's like "Oh I poured these already. Your server never brought them to you. Then handed me warm/watered down drinks that he said were sitting there for about 30 minutes." I returned to my table and food had arrived finally. I ordered a turkey burger which I have had in the past and thought was great. Well, today not so much. There was zero seasoning on the burger, didn't seem they used eggs or breadcrumbs or anything to bind/mix the ground turkey either. It was bland mush. I took a couple bites and had to stop - no condiment could save this. The texture and flavor were off. My mom tried a bit and agreed and couldn't believe it as she's ordered it before as well and loved it. Tried to flag the waitress down to order something else - she didn't come back to the table until everyone was down with their food and ready for dessert and the bill. She asked if I wanted a box and I mentioned that the turkey burger was not good and not made properly and would've wanted something else had she come sooner, she just said "oh" and took it away and moved on. My mom ordered a grilled cheese and the cheese wasn't melted. My sister ordered the inside out burger and it arrived with the bacon and cheese on top instead of inside and the burger was cooked rare MAYBE medium rare - she asked for it to be medium. My dad had a turkey sandwich with just a single slice of turkey on it. It wasn't a dinner or lunch rush. It was mid afternoon. The service and quality of food/drink was concerning considering the time of day. I can only imagine how much worse it would be if it were a dinner rush. We used to go here all the time and never had issues. Hopefully this is just an off day but a lot was off about it so I don't imagine we will want to return anytime soon. read more

This is the first time I've been to a Hackney's in a long time, but the burgers are still fantastic. My wife and I have a good burger craving for awhile now and have been left unsatisfied with our last couple of tries, and Hackney's really came through. We were in the area, which is not close to home, and decided that Hackney's was a good choice and it was. We started with the onion loaf, of course, and it was amazing as usual. I had the Gouda bbq burger which was just a perfectly cooked medium rare, juicy and loaded with grilled onions. I also opted for the pretzel bun which was perfect. My wife had the stuffed burger. You can never fail with Hackney's. Just great comfort food in a classic family atmosphere. The BEST fried onions rings (onion loaf) and Potato Skins in the world. I have yet to find a Patty Melt or "Inside-out Burger" (8oz burger stuffed with bacon and cheese) that is better than Hackney's. Fries can be inconsistent (ask for them crispy), but they are bottomless so eat all you want. The rest of the menu is pretty basic, any of the sandwiches are solid (i.e. The rueben, BLT, chicken avocado melt) and the deserts are worth trying (i.e. The leprechaun pie). Also make sure to check the specials changing daily. Service is always efficient. side note: They carry the best apple sauce in the world: Mullen's apple sauce, started and run by a disabled Chicago police veteran. It tastes like the inside of an apple pie and is available for purchase by the jar. read more

Of course my daughter didn't touch the broccoli once she saw fries come out with everything else. A sour start since I asked for it to come out before everything for a reason. I stopped a server walking by who wasn't our original server, since they forgot to check in, and she admitted it looked like a "dry, well done" burger and she would get a medium out ASAP. I was not going to send my burger back a second time because the rest of my family was into their meals. The actual server came back and he saw how it was well done and said it must be how they're smoking the burgers. Okay... my boyfriend had also ordered medium and got medium well at best but he was too hungry to send it back. I'm not sure why they ask for a temp if they only know how to cook well done. I have grown up going to Hackneys for a family meal now and then. The place is massive and even if there is a wait, it usually isn't long. There is a small game room where kids can spend the wait time playing $0.25 games. The onion rings are a must and I've been told the green soda is good (I don't drink pop). During THE holiday, you can see Irish dancers in the basement (I remember dancing there when I was young). There is a solid beer menu and the food is pretty good. The wait staff can be great, but also can be a bit of a let down. read more
