We loveeee habernos, so much that we go almost every Friday! Food is always amazing and service is always quick! The fried Oreos are a must try! If you're looking for a great healthier option- I always order shredded chicken on lettuce wraps and it is so good!

Went with a group, the place is very modern, so I was instantly pulled in because it's always a treat to go somewhere that seems newly renovated. Personally, everything was just alright for me. I'm not the biggest Mexican food person so I got the classic tacos with a side of fries. For me the tacos were just alright, but the fries were really good. To try to lighten the mood of the table I suggested a dessert and they had something called Raspberry Burritos which were very intriguing, the server has a hard time explaining what it really was. When they came out I noticed that they are in actuality, sopapilla with a creme filling and have raspberry drizzle, along with a side of ice cream. In the end, I just found the food to be ok, I really came more for the people.

If you live on the South shore of Lake Pontchartrain, Habanero's is little off the beaten path. However, it's definitely worth the ride. I had my first and only visit (so far) on Sunday 20 MAR 2022; but it definitely won't be my last visit. It was my nephew's birthday and this was where he wanted to eat. The place is easy to spot as you head down LA-22, as there's a big skull on the exterior façade. The building is in very good shape, is aesthetically pleasing from the outside and has a decent amount of parking in their attached lot. The inside was surprisingly nice and the bar was the focal point of the restaurant. But don't let that cool bar fool you, as this place is definitely all about the food. The chips and salsa were immediately an indicator that the food was going to be good to go. There's no way these chips were store bought, as they tasted freshly made. I was a little nervous when our server began to take our orders, as we were a party of 10 and he didn't write a single order down. Based on the recommendation of my nephew, I got the the Apache tacos, which are listed on the menu as signature tacos, and comes with 2 sides. These skirt steak tacos are loaded with more meat than I've EVER seen on a taco and are served in a purple hard corn shell, but you can opt for a lettuce wrap or flour tortilla upon request. Unless you are watching what you eat, go purple or go home, as these taco shells rocked. They are topped with Oaxaca cheese and nopales (cactus). Don't let the nopales scare you, as they add a wonderful, subtle taste. The tacos were some of the best I've ever had, but they were a little too salty. Great flavor, but the salt was just a little too pronounced. The signature tacos come with 2 sides and I got the guacamole salad, which was uneventful, and a bowl of chicken tortilla soup. The soup was fantastic, as it was seasoned well and loaded with chicken. As was my concern, three of our orders were "slightly wrong". The entrees were correct, but some of our side orders were wrong. Unless you have a photographic memory, I'd recommend writing orders down, especially for large parties such as ours. Overall, this was a great experience, and I'd recommend it to anyone, as it was definitely surprisingly delicious. I wish they'd go a little easier on the salt. Take a look at their online menu. I guarantee the photos alone will make you want to go there.

The new decor is picture perfect! The waiters seem flustered as the place is small with many tables and little room to walk. The drinks were decent and the food was hot. The birria was also lacking birria, I received the smallest cup of Burris I ever seen, no way you were dipping that taco. I won't be back but pretty decent food just needs a lot more flavor for my taste buds.

While working here locally have eaten here maybe five times and each time the food is excellent! Gourmet lever tacos! The service good and per the norm we get out orders fairly quickly. I could do without the lame music but the food and service are what keep us coming back!:) The Apache tacos are especially good!! read more

Excellent place to eat. We met some friends here for the first time and we were thoroughly impressed. The food was fresh, well prepared and well presented. It was far from typical Americanized Mexican. The staff was friendly and attentive - I think we were visited by most every employee and manager, but not to the point of being disruptive or annoying. We have definitely added Habenero's to our dining roster! We will be back. read more

Food is okay and decent service. The atmosphere is horrible. The music was blasting away in some kind of Latin techno music over the sound system. We complained to manager. He said sorry but that's what the owner wants. I feel sorry for servers that has to suffer an entire shift listening to that blasting away. Won't be back. Poor dining experience read more

Definitely some of the better tacos and sides you will get around this area. They are unique for this very bland section of Louisiana where it seems all Mexican restaurants are all the same. You will pay a little more then other places but overall, Habaneros steps out of the box a little and the cocktails aren't bad. read more

My wife and I love Habanero's! I recommend all of the following: trio Chimichanga (steak/shrimp/chicken); steak fajitas with peppers and onion; chicken quesadillas. Normally all is good here... Sadly I had Alejandro taking care of me, and the words 'taking care of me' Is a stretch. Took him a half hour to bring me up my order of to go chips, hot sauce and guacamole. Specified a large and brought a small. First blamed it on the kitchen and then stated I must've ordered a small. I was very specific when I said regular guacamole "large".. asked for a napkin, he went and took care of two other tables and then brought them drinks before I got my napkin 10 minutes later. I went picked one up previous because he was taking so long.. Overall the service was very very slow. When you go to a restaurant you're not supposed to take silverware and napkins set up away as he did.. After all this is a restaurant.. Need to retrain Alejandro. If I go back which I probably will I will make sure I will not have him as a server.. read more

Don't miss this place. Homemade chips and salsa, delicious street tacos, and good food for picky kids too. I had grilled chicken street tacos with rice and black beans (their beans are like nothing I've ever had before and we eat a lot of Mexican food). My husband had the bacon wrapped BBQ shrimp tacos and couldn't stop telling me how good they were. We have picky daughters and they were happy with the kids menu as well. I know you're not coming here for French fries, but even those were delicious. We're from Indianapolis and when we head home, I'll still be dreaming of this place. read more

Ok, I am not disappointed. Read TF review and totally agree. The delicate texture of the fried foods accompanied by spicy salsa is Devine. Shredded chicken is lean and tender. I measure Mexican fare by the chicken tortilla soup, again, I use delicate as my best adjective and flavorful. The flavor of the broth is subtle but satisfying. read more

Had fajitas beef and chicken we're very tough and took forever to chew. the corn tortillas were also chewy. I asked the waitress to warm them before hand and I guess she didn't care to. She was not too nice. Won't be back! read more

Probably one of the worst meals I've ever had. Ordered the food through the Waitr app and it arrived fast. However, most of the food was inedible. I ordered the carne asada which smelled horrible (like feces) and was rubbery. I didn't even feed it to my dog just threw it in the trash. The queso and salsa were both too spicy to eat and the napoles tasted like armpits. Kid's sirloin was too chewy for my toddler. Chips, beans, rice, and sautéed onions were the only edible parts of our meal. Will never order from here again. read more

I am so thrilled to have located this Mexican restaurant that serves the kind of Mexican cuisine I am accustomed to. Just located to Covington from 35 years in San Diego (lived 15 miles from the US/Mexican border) and Habaneros serves Mexican food just like you get in San Diego. Fresh ingredients used, well thought out menu items and not the lard laden Mexican food I have found at other Mexican restaurants in the area (known as Tex-Mex in California). Beautifully presented and a wonderful menu selection sure to please all palates. read more

Pretty good dinner. I had green chile enchiladas with a grilled chicken breast. Pretty tasty. I also had a side of guacamole that was not too good. Pretty sure it was fresh but just didn't have a very good flavor. Very good & friendly service. I'll probably give em another shot. It was about $22 or so before the tip with the side of guac and 1 beer at happy hr price. read more

The food and margaritas are great. I always have a great experience, but the to-go service needs improvement. Our recent to-go order had to be taken back to this location twice due to missing or wrong items being given to us, and we still ended up with an incorrect item. The particular item was enchiladas, nothing complicated. It was sloppy and did not taste as good as their food normally does. read more

Just went to the location off Hwy. 21 in Covington. We ordered the steak fajitas and carne asada. The only difference between the two was the fajitas were cut in strips. Was loaded with grease and the meat was very tough. The renovation is definitely geared towards a younger crowd along with the loud music. We have been to many mexican restaurants around here and in Texas and this is by far the worst I have ever eaten. Wife got home and threw away her leftovers. read more

A small Mexican restaurant located in a strip mall that serves up some excellent tacos! The outside of the building is neat and clean, aside from the sign you wouldn't know it was a restaurant. In this particular strip mall, there are three other restaurants. The space is quite small, but arranged efficiently. The decor is modern meets early 2000s Ed Hardy. The service is average, not really friendly but far from rude. You probably won't be greeted when you walk in, and will need to request a drink refill. Hopefully they took note from other reviews that had issues with the service. They do tacos very well. They are served on a wood plank with a stainless steel taco holder to keep them upright. Great presentation, excellent flavor, fresh ingredients. The salsa is spicy, which I thoroughly enjoyed. I prefer a more rustic salsa, but this was puréed and smooth. One of the better salsas I've sampled. The rest of the menu is mediocre. I had the chicken quesadilla and was not impressed... it was average at best with very little flavor and a sad presentation. The prices are a little high, for a Mexican restaurant in a strip mall. Entrees are around $12-15.. the tacos are the only item worth the price. So-- Order the tacos. Enjoy the salsa. Skip the rest of the menu. Don't expect great service. Expect to pay a little more than you would at the other Mexican places in town. read more

Don't waste your money on the taco salad!! My first visit was good. This place is pricey but the portions were good. This second visit I got a taco salad to go and it was a joke! I paid $20.00 for sweet tea and extremely small salad. The salad only consisted of lettuce, cheese, and chopped tomatoes and a tiny dab of sour cream, I paid extra for the 6 shrimp! No guacamole! No beans!No dressing! I feel ripped off! read more

If you are instead looking for great food that is more interesting, this is the place. For example, tonight we had a chicharron that looked liked two of biggest fried slices of hog heaven you could hope for. It was amazing! We also had the chimichurri sauce which was slightly different from what we have had in the past but it too was awesome! The experience was started with a teenage hostess who was initially rude to my friend who got there before us. After we arrived the group was sat and it took about 25 minutes for us to be spoken to. They seemed steady, but definitely not busy considering multiple employees were standing around at one point doing nothing. We still kept our hopes up because we were excited to try out the restaurant. The waitress insisted on us ordering all at once; drinks and food. My margarita was incorrect and it was $12 for a HOUSE on top of that. I was never able to inform her that my drink was incorrect because she never came back to the table until we were well into our meal. I just ignored it and still remained optimistic. Our food came and it was terrible. The el pastor tacos were so dry and hard, pineapple was only on one taco, and I was given incorrect sides. My husband received incorrect sides and the waitress forgot to enter half of our order for our kids food. When she finally came to our table to check on us... the one time she did... I told her of all the mistakes and that we were ready for our checks. Nothing was comped or adjusted even though it was the restaurants fault that our entire meal was messed up. She ran our cards, sat the books on the table and didn't even tell us "have a nice night". She just walked away. The entire table was covered in all our dirty dishes and trash. She didn't pick up anything while we were sitting there. When I waitressed, I would have been chewed out by management leaving the table that way. I will NEVER eat here again. This is by far the worst dinning experience I've ever had; food was mediocre and service was TERRIBLE. The only reason it deserves a star is because the place has a cool atmosphere. read more

You can tell when a place has "it", this place definitely has it...authentic Mexican food, incredible owners and staff. Hands down, my favorite place to eat in Covington...I actually crave it. The owners and staff make you feel like family and the food is perfect, not overly seasoned, always satisfying and never greasy. The dining area is small, but I wouldn't change a thing if it meant the overall experience would suffer. We've been eating there for the past 4 months and there have been times that we've eaten there 3 days in a row...that should say a lot. If you're looking for real Mexican food, this is definitely as good as it gets. EDIT: I have to say I was confused as to why someone would give Habanero's 1 star and a negative review, especially since almost every review is favorable, then I realized they're upset because it's more expensive than Taco Bell...well, pretty much everything is more expensive than Taco Bell. You get what you pay for and everyone knows Taco Bell is the lowest form of food. Also, the fact that the reviewer said there were "no beans" is also inaccurate, the Charro beans are incredible as well as the re-fried beans and rice, so that alone is misleading. I was staying with family in Pawleys for the week and it was my night to host dinner at the beach house. I wanted to theme my meal "Taco Tuesday" but not being from the area, I had no idea where to turn. I made a list of local Mexican restaurants and just starting calling. My first call was to Habaneros, and needless to say, it was my only call. I spoke with Lupe, and he was eager to help me with a "taco bar" and all the fixings. Do you know how many businesses act like they don't care if you patronize them or not? That was not the case here - Lupe was kind, easy to work with, and excited to get my business, plus he gave me a great price. I picked up my meal the next night and it was everything Lupe promised and more. I couldn't believe the generous portions. My family went crazy - might have been the best meal we had all week. I was genuinely looking forward to trying this place, but the experience was extremely disappointing. The meal began to unravel the moment I bit into my shrimp taco and encountered a hard rock embedded in the filling. Not a shell fragment.....: an actual rock. When I brought it to the staff's attention, no one could identify what it was or explain how it made its way into the food, which was both alarming and unsettling. Unfortunately, the rest of the meal did little to redeem the situation. The corn elote, which the menu describes as a seasoned and flavorful dish, arrived bland and dry. It tasted as though someone had taken cold corn and simply squeezed mayonnaise over it, with none of the bright, savory elements that typically make elote enjoyable. We happened upon this restaurant after a long weekend soccer tourney in Hammond, and not wanting to make the drive back to Slidell for a long lunch break between games. It was the best thing that could have happened to us (food wise) that weekend. We lost (closed for unknown reasons:( )our lone decent Mexican restaurant in Slidell about 6 months ago. It was nice to find a Mexican restaurant with an awesome food selection and a wonderfully prepared Margarita. A Margarita for me, will make or break a Mexican restaurant for me. My kids love this place and I'd love to keep ordering from them but if they leave an item out of your order they will fight you lol. We were missing a wrap and some fajitas. When I called, the very annoyed woman huffed, told me hang on, then came back to tell me he (?) said it's all in there lol. Well, it wasn't. I don't know what else to say. I don't think I'd lose a customer over a missing wrap and some tortillas. The order was about 100 bucks so this was really kinda gross of them to do. Casa Garcia next time! read more

I never had 2 separate waitresses come up and ask to take my order, so that was kind of cool. Everybody was friendly, and the service was quick. My only complaint was that the lunch portion was pretty skimpy. I would have made the taco with twice the filling, and I wouldn't have served a flat cheese enchilada. I found Habaneros using "Nearby Restaurants" on Facebook. I had no idea it existed, but I'm glad I found it! Great customer service, great authentic food, great margaritas and beer, and great environment. It is a small space so probably better for couples or parties of 4-6.
