Went with a group, the place is very modern, so I was instantly pulled in because it's always a treat to go somewhere that seems newly renovated. Personally, everything was just alright for me. I'm not the biggest Mexican food person so I got the classic tacos with a side of fries. For me the tacos were just alright, but the fries were really good. To try to lighten the mood of the table I suggested a dessert and they had something called Raspberry Burritos which were very intriguing, the server has a hard time explaining what it really was. When they came out I noticed that they are in actuality, sopapilla with a creme filling and have raspberry drizzle, along with a side of ice cream. We ordered to go. I haven't tried any Mexican restaurants since moving to this area. This is close to home and the menu looked interesting. We finally decided to try it, I think I'm being generous with 2 stars. I'm including how easy it was to order online as 1 star. Just based on food, I'm not sure I would give 2 stars. Ordering online is really easy and there were no issues. I was so disappointed because the menu sounded a little different from some Mexican restaurants. We got one Al Pastor Tacos plate (3 soft tortilla), beans, and maduros @ $14.95, a beef, crunchy taco a là cart (Gringo style for my Latin boyfriend... he was in that mood) $2.95, the Covington Guacamole ($12.95), a quesadilla @ $7.95, a flauta @ $2.95, and a side of rice. It was over $60 when we picked it up with the take out fees and a tip. The Al pastor tacos were close to what I'd label as bad. For the price, there was very little meat and it was small, dried out pieces. They reminded me of rabbit pellet poop when I looked them. Even after that description, they were by far not the worst menu item. The beans were bland and I love maduros and I think it's hard to get me not to like them. These seemed undercooked and a bit hard. You only got 3 very small pieces. The Covington Guacamole was good. It's about 4-5 bites each for 2 people. The pineapple and bacon add a nice kick to the dish, I liked the pork rinds with it. This would be a nice option for Keto. At $13, it's too expensive for the amount you get in my opinion. The gringo style taco was pitiful. There was maybe 1-2 tablespoons of beef and even less cheese. My boyfriend said he would prefer a well know fast food Mexican place over this one. The flauta and quesadilla were equally as bad. It seems like the items were sitting under a heat lamp for hours, but we picked the order up as soon as it was ready. Neither of us finished our meals and threw away about half the food. Maybe they had an off night but I can't imagine spending $60 again for a meal from here. read more

We moved into town about a week ago and when asking locals where to eat, Habaneros came up a few times. As a local chain, everyone had an opinion on what to order and their favorite location, but our general consensus was that the food/service had minor changes in each location but the same selections in each store. We came to this Habaneros last night at around 8:30pm, after shopping across the road at River Chase shopping center. We were definitely the last ones there, as they close at 9pm. Despite this, food was fresh and the service was prompt and attentive. We were not rushed to order or leave. We ordered the enchiladas verses. The plate came with a good portion of grilled chicken and rice. Everything was cooked well. My husband ordered the Baja tacos and the kitchen was kind enough to sub the shrimp for a grilled snapper. He liked them just fine and added the accompaniments of tortilla soup and rice. Our waitress was kind enough to reheat the soup when it was served on the colder side and to bring us hot sauces (which were excellent!) from the kitchen when we asked. In addition to the plates, we each order a margarita (my husband the cucumber mint and I the house sangria marg) and they were both good and had a fairly strong taste. The staff also served us chips with a bean dip and salsa to start. I will say that we were not told the bean dip had bacon until after my husband ate it. He does not eat pork, so it would have been helpful to disclose this, or ask guests if they have any allergies/dietary needs before service). In short, the service and food were good and we would consider going back. Their food is Tex Mex, so flavors are very Americanized to accommodate this crowd. This place has great decor and I can see this as a very instagram worthy place for the younger crowd. read more

If you live on the South shore of Lake Pontchartrain, Habanero's is little off the beaten path. However, it's definitely worth the ride. I had my first and only visit (so far) on Sunday 20 MAR 2022; but it definitely won't be my last visit. It was my nephew's birthday and this was where he wanted to eat. The place is easy to spot as you head down LA-22, as there's a big skull on the exterior façade. The building is in very good shape, is aesthetically pleasing from the outside and has a decent amount of parking in their attached lot. The inside was surprisingly nice and the bar was the focal point of the restaurant. But don't let that cool bar fool you, as this place is definitely all about the food. The chips and salsa were immediately an indicator that the food was going to be good to go. There's no way these chips were store bought, as they tasted freshly made. I was a little nervous when our server began to take our orders, as we were a party of 10 and he didn't write a single order down. Based on the recommendation of my nephew, I got the the Apache tacos, which are listed on the menu as signature tacos, and comes with 2 sides. These skirt steak tacos are loaded with more meat than I've EVER seen on a taco and are served in a purple hard corn shell, but you can opt for a lettuce wrap or flour tortilla upon request. Unless you are watching what you eat, go purple or go home, as these taco shells rocked. They are topped with Oaxaca cheese and nopales (cactus). Don't let the nopales scare you, as they add a wonderful, subtle taste. The tacos were some of the best I've ever had, but they were a little too salty. Great flavor, but the salt was just a little too pronounced. The signature tacos come with 2 sides and I got the guacamole salad, which was uneventful, and a bowl of chicken tortilla soup. The soup was fantastic, as it was seasoned well and loaded with chicken. As was my concern, three of our orders were "slightly wrong". The entrees were correct, but some of our side orders were wrong. Unless you have a photographic memory, I'd recommend writing orders down, especially for large parties such as ours. Overall, this was a great experience, and I'd recommend it to anyone, as it was definitely surprisingly delicious. I wish they'd go a little easier on the salt. Take a look at their online menu. We have been to the Madisonville location many times and have never had a meal we didn't like. We decided to stop at the Covington location before shopping at Sams on a Saturday because it was convenient. Not the same! Bean dip was watery and frozen margarita was rather bland. I ordered the chile relleno and I couldn't finish it. It seemed to be previously frozen, not fresh because the whole thing was just soggy. The birria was also lacking birria, I received the smallest cup of Burris I ever seen, no way you were dipping that taco. Came here on a Tuesday afternoon. The place wasn't crowded but there was plenty of servers, who were all super friendly. Even the manager came out to speak with me. I think this chain gets an A for effort but some aspects of the food miss the mark. One, it is on the pricey side for Mexican food, but the restaurants are clean and tastefully decorated so ok. They do make a great rice and grilled chicken (though it is not much because it is cut like a scallopini and they don't give you all the slices of a whole breast). However, they do not provide much food for the cost and they skimp on the ingredients. The shrimp tacos barely had shrimp with a little bit of topping and they were small so you are basically eating a corn tortilla. The cheese enchiladas barely had cheese inside and they charged $1.75 on top of the $16.95 for queso sauce, instead of green sauce but failed to mention that. My biggest gripe however is regarding the corn tortillas in both meals. I think they make them which is great! However, they tasted undercooked; really undercooked, yet the edges were hard! I mean tortillas are the main staple and you can't cook them correctly? Really! Anyway, this was our last visit. Now I will say lastly that the service is always friendly and top notch. I hope they improve but for overpriced Mexican it is just not worth it! read more

In my opinion, this is the best Mexican restaurant on the north shore! A lot of people love La Carretas, but I will say that Habaneros is way better hands-down. Their presentation and menu selection is wonderful and creative. You also don't get a slew of rice and beans like most traditional Tex-Mex places. There are other side options, such as tortilla soup, steamed vegetables, street, corn, and many more! We used to love this place, but the last two times we've been have been questionable. They served our 10 year old raw chicken (thankfully I always inspect the food when it comes to chicken), which was enough for me to never return. We gave them another chance because we love their margaritas, and the food was awful. It's a shame - we really loved this place. Before I begin I'd like to advise you that my experiences with Habaneros have all been take out. I can't comment on service or ambiance, but I can strongly recommend their food as it is delicious. Most of the time that I think of Mexican food I think of the reasonably priced Tex-Mex style restaurants so prevelant in the area. Habaneros is much different than these places, and probably not for everyone. It is most definitely for me. To borrow a phrase from my favorite celebrity chef, Habaneros takes Mexican street food and "kicks it up a notch". Here are some of the items I've tried: Street Corn - Holy hell man. Who decided that addining mayo to corn was a good idea? Give that man a raise. The ingredients seem weird together, but this tangy corn is excellent. Sope Trio - These two bite sized corn pillows are a good way to sample different flavors. Chorizo was my favorite. LA Roka - This is basically a sampler platter with shrimp, sirloin, chicken, sausage, onions and cheese. It's better than any combination platter I've ever had. It comes with tortillas to make fajita like bites, but it's good enough to stand on its own without the tortillas. Tacos - There are many different varieties and all I've had are great. The apache and habanero are the best beef versions and the playeros and vaqueros are the best with shrimp. If I had to pick my favorite I'd be hard pressed, but the habaneros with carne asada and chorizo or apache with shrimp and cream cheese stuffed jalapeños would win out. Beans - I'm not sure how they prepare their churro beans, but they're the best I've ever tasted. It's more like a bean soup with large chunks of meat. I actually take the container and sip it so that I can taste that amazing flavor as fast as humanly possible. No spoon can shovel fast enough. While the food is amazing, if you're used to more casual Mexican joints you may be in for a bit of sticker shock. Tacos are around $13-17 and LA Roka is around $23. But if you know that going in, you're in for some of the best Mexican food you can get. One day I'll actually eat at Habaneros. Until then it will be my go-to Mexican to-go restaurant. read more
