I haven't been to this location in years, so I was delighted to see how nice the outdoor dining area had been decorated. We were greeted with a smile, as our waitress was super friendly and helpful as she offered her recommendations. Not a bad place to hang out, enjoyed our experience beside the train blasting in our ears but to be expected. The outside is very pretty and enticing full of foliage. The host was a little judgmental, I guess she thought we just knew to sit down somewhere so we stood for a second before being helped. The waitress was a little rude and didn't visit very often to refill drinks or check on us. Great concepts, great looking food, less than great execution and delivery. Carne asada tacos were very good, but everything else was "meh." The Tamales Oaxaqueño with carnitas and salsa verde sounds terrific, but comes out really bland (not quite flavorless). The plate was advertised with pico de gallo and refried black beans. The pico was nowhere in sight and the beans were kind of rust colored red. The beans, and Mexican rice, were pretty good, but just not what I was expecting. The Monterey Shrimp plate (grilled shrimp with grilled veggies) was simply grilled with no seasoning at all. Shrimp and veggies alone are good, but it seems a reasonable expectation to have them somewhat seasoned at a Mexican restaurant, don't you think? Service? I've come to appreciate slower than normal service for the relaxation from the rat race, but when the waiter simply forgets? That's a bit much. (After asking for our check, I had to get up and go find him to ask for the check a second time.) All in all, not a terrible experience- patio dining with great weather, and decent food (just not all I hoped for), made it a good experience. Seemed to be bothered by having to take my table, frustrated by the food I decided to order (a light afternoon snack) and proceeded to grab the menus in an angry way mumbling as he was walking away , approached us to take our order by saying "what do you want?". i love this restaurant but this is by far the worst service i have ever received in a restaurant, and being i work in a restaurant i would hate to work alongside a server like him. read more

I've been here to eat a few times now since my daughter has chose to go to Southeastern and It's been consistently a good experience. The service has been really good which is a little surprising since all the wait staff are very young. They must do a good job during the hiring process and with training the employees. The last time I came I got a grilled chicken dish with Spanish rice and veggies and everything tasted great, even the rice which I usually find bland in many Tex-Mex restaurants. The guacamole is fresh and made table side if you'd like for a little more. Besides that they have the usual Tex-Mex menu plus a lot of local seafood Tex-Mex inspired dishes that are really tasty. The atmosphere is loud and fun. Lots of tv's to watch the sport of choice, an area for live music and a decent sized outdoor seating area if the weather is nice. Had a horrible day at work and was referred here by the hotel. Wasn't up to looking at the menu and asked Grace to bring me dinner. Not uncommon for me to let a server choose. Grace brought the Monterey dinner with shrimp. The meal was seasoned well and delicious. Anyone who follows me knows you loose a star if the kitchen doesn't execute. In truth the lost half a star but I round up. The half star was lost to shrimp that had either been steamed or boiled before cooking and as a result had a boiled texture. The texture didn't kill the flavor but the execution was not flawless. Came here for lunch with the family after seeing some signs on the highway headed to Baton Rouge, family wanted Mexican so decided to go here. Atmosphere is great. Unfortunately the chips were stale and had some ketchup salsa. There was some Cholula hot sauce to add to it to try and make it better. Ordered the chimichanga lunch, beans and rice were good, ground beef was rich on the stomach from tons of seasoning, could only eat less than half my chimmy. The water was good. Service was mediocre. Food was decent, but also bland, the guacamole was basically just avocado and lime juice and all you tasted was the lime juice, refried beans were cooked well but just lacked seasoning and flavor and that goes for the rice as well. This our go-to place almost every Friday. My wife loves the place and I find it good. The reason for the 3-star review is they got rid of the blood orange margaritas. I'm not a big margarita fan, but these blood orange margaritas are very good. Some waiters will get them for us and others it is always "we don't have them anymore". We talked to one of the managers and he said that yes they still have them just out of the mix. Last 2 visits we unluckily got the same waiter. The best waiter there is Rudy. I usually enjoy coming here but i ordered take out and it was completely wrong. I'm a vegetarian and ordered and simple bean, rice and cheese burrito with lettuce, guacamole and sour cream added into. NO WHERE on my receipt did I order meat in it. One time is fine, i just reordered it and went about my night. when the second one came everything was in but there WAS STILL CHICKEN. That is absolutely ridiculous. We hadn't eaten at this restaurant in a while and thought we'd give it a go. It was a Friday night at dinner time and we'd already been to and left Cate Street Seafood because of a 30 minute wait. There are far too many restaurants in Hammond to have to wait that long, even on a Friday evening! Anyway, after a short wait at La Carreta we were seated inside the main room. We had requested a table in the back room because of a loud band in the main room, but were told the back room was filled with a large lingering party. We had been hoping to avoid the noise and would have taken an outside table had it not been raining. Pro: Live music. Con: Live music so loud you couldn't hold a conversation without yelling. Drinks and food arrived timely and as ordered. I had the three taco dinner plate. Pro: The pork and pineapple soft taco was phenomenal. I wish I'd ordered three of those! Con: The avocado didn't taste fresh. The roasted pepper on the side feels like a volcano in your mouth, but that isn't really a con if you like that sort of thing. Our server was experienced and courteous. The decor, inside and out, is bright and fun. There are tv's everywhere. Didn't check out the restrooms. Had my friend and I been able to hold a conversation I'd rate the establishment 4/5 stars, but the music was just too loud and there was no opportunity to escape it. read more

My favorite of all the La Carettas in the metro area. This location sits in historic downtown Hammond next to the train route. There is plenty of outdoor seating on the beautifully decorated patio. You can see live music on the mini stage or watch the game on one of the many outdoor televisions. There is plenty of indoor seating as well. The margaritas are delicious and very large. You can't go wrong with anything on the menu. My favorites are the flautas and chili relleno. For dessert try the churros, very authentic. Service is fast and friendly. read more

We have had the worst service ever.My friend and I have been here for over one hour we have never even been brought a water. My friend has had to go to the bar three times to get our drinks. We even try to make eye contact with our waiter to see if we can even get him to come over here and he just keeps walking past us. They seem to be paying attention to all the other customers at the restaurant besides us for some reason we don't know. Margaritas were weak and my "small" was just a watered down(literally) margarita in the same glass as my wife's large. We got some nachos in a big tin bowl but they weren't good at all. This place is always a great spot for the atmosphere. However, the drinks will quite literally make you sick. I came with my partner and sister. They both got very sick from what i'm assuming were the strawberry margaritas (I got regular). The food was great. They only got one each so it was not due to the alcohol, they had no buzz.
