Having wanted to go to a local brewery, which was having a very loud trivia might, we decided to go to El Jimador as our back up plan. At half pass seven it was not very busy. We were immediately seated. The beer selection was typical for a Mexican restaurant in the United States. Menus, water and chips were brought out immediately. We enjoyed some guacamole with our chip and salsa. I had a nice cold Negro Modelo and a burrito, enchilada and tamale combo.. Good food, served hot and a cold beer to wash it down. Bland bland bland. From the decor, to the food, ending with the service. The salsa was pleasant enough, if you were a child and didn't like any spice. No onions, cilantro or jalapeños were evident. There were only 3 tables with customers, but we still had to wait for service. Had to wait for salsa. Had to wait for the check. Actually, we never got the check. Ordered Take-Out on Wednesday, and it was the 1st time I've had El Jimador's food. Their location has changed restaurant names+types sooo many times! But, I hope (and expect) that they'll be the success story and last a long time! *** Note: Sorry, I ate all the food before I even thought to take pics..*Laughs*..Next time! *** I'm a fan of Mexican Food and we have plenty of Mexican Restaurants around here: La Caretta's, Adobe's, La Sarrita's, Izzio's, Pink Agave, El Agave, Margarita's, Si Senor Taqueria, and MANY MORE! When considering the whole scope and pack of the Mexican Restaurants, Sadly, I find very few stand out to me, and there are plenty of them I don't like+won't eat at all. The range of Restaurants go from Business Casual Dining, to College Beer Pong +Frat-mosphere, to Everyday Annie/Johnny Walk-in & Eat Casual. I would place El Jimador (Walk-in & Eat) as follows: a) CASUAL, Everyday Dining, Wear Whatever, Relaxed Atmosphere b) PRICING = Low to Mid-Level, VERY Reasonable Prices! Entree's are UNDER $10usd c) QUANTITY of Food = Healthy Portions, but I get the impression (strictly from the portioning+packing), that "Take Out", can be coin toss as to if diners get a good portion to a small/average portion. d) TAKE-OUT PACKAGING: Uses a combination of styrofoam clam shells, and metal containers with the cardboard lids. Which matter only from the how hot or not your food stays in transit, and if it will arrive a big mess w/sauce everywhere. I'm not a clam shell fan as sauces tend to leak. The Alum +Cardboard lids are great+everything stays inside+keeps its heat! e) QUALITY of Food = The most important point! And Le Jimador doesn't disappoint! Their food actually tastes good! It has flavor without being made dramatically 'spicy' or 'hot', their refried beans are good w/o being either runny or cement. Their rice was cooked well, not mushy, not hard, but imho it didn't have much flavor, which is a shame as that is such an easy fix, and since it is served with most platters, etc., it's a key point in a Customer's overall dining experience. Again, an easy fix, and critical part of the meal rotation since most Customers will be eating it. e) SAUCES = With Mexican food another key component are the basic sauces: Red Sauce/Enchilada, White Sauce/Queso, Green Sauce/Verde...I had Cheese Enchiladas, a Chalupa, and a Chimichanga (not all at once, 3 meals ..LoL).. I found the Enchilada Sauce/Red Sauce a bit thin in consistency but it wasn't too runny, and it had a good flavor. I would have to say the White Sauce/Queso Sauce was my favorite and it definitely stood out. It was Rich, Creamy, Thick, it not a brick even when cooled. Although it naturally is a somewhat salty sauce depending upon the cheese used. This white sauce thankfully wasn't too salty. It certainly paired well with the Shrimp Chimichanga (shrimp, green bell peppers, tomatoes, onions, wrapped in a flour tortilla w/White Sauce =YUM!) I could write so much more, because there is a lot to like about El Jimador's food, but I know I'm either already at or closing in on the max text amount... ...so, Swing By El Jimador's their food is worth the visit..*smiles*.. 2 Thumbs Up! & 5-Stars!..I can't wait for my next Mexican food craving, now that I know I have an unassuming, nicely priced, wear whatever (from day at the beach to summer dress w/No side eye), local Mexican restaurant that serves GOOD FOOD to visit! read more

First off, it looks abandoned from the outside. Inside was clean but run down. We went at 6pm on a Monday and there was one table leaving as we walked in so that we were the only customers in the place. The salsa & bean queso dip was extremely bland. Chips were nasty. The steak fajitas were brought out on a plate not a sizzling skillet and were tough. The chimichanga chicken was dry and flavorless. The beef nachos were blah and looked like they dumped whatever toppings they had in the kitchen on top of them. We ordered 4 menu items and every one of them was brought out wrong. It was cinco de mayo and packed! I still only waited 20 minutes after ordering for two orders of fajitas (3 meat)Texanas and a cup of tortilla soup. It was packaged well in aluminum plates which helped the food to stay warm and fresh until we made it home! The tortilla soup was tomato based which doesn't do well with my acid reflux but really tasty not salty so that's a plus. First less than stellar experience. Came in for lunch and the food was great... the guacamole on the other hand was old... and obviously so. We sent back our order of extra gaucomole hoping for a remake, but none was offered. He even brought more of the old stuff on my fajitas plate, also sent back. Just visited again and everything was great, upped my rating! Previously...We heard that this was opened by the same people that previously owned El Tapatio... which was one of our favorite tex-mex spots for years. Our party of 5 was seated immediately and the service was great and friendly. They brought plenty of salsa, but it just didn't have the zing it used to have... a little too much on the tomatoes. The fajitas were great portions as usual for a great price. The chicken, steak and shrimp were all top quality meats. The kids had quesadillas, both shrimp and chicken... and seemed satisfied. The youngest had a kid's nacho plate with added jalapeños. Our adult drinks were great too. So... definitely worth a visit... the salsa is not as it was before... but that's just my opinion. I actually had never planned to go here until the word got around town that this restaurant is owned by the same people that had previously owned El Tapatio. After some digging, I found this to be true. El Tapatio was our favorite Mexican restaurant in Hammond before it closed. It may have been the cheapest around, but was of extremely high quality. They also ran a 2-for-1 margarita special every day at all times. El Jimador has brought back the same original menu with all of your Mexican favorites for a low price. The chicken nachos, both fajita style or shredded, are the best nachos I have had anywhere. The chicken is perfectly marginated and is topped off with bell peppers and tomatoes. I had a pleasant take out experience here today. My good was prepared quick and was fresh & hot. The gentleman at the counter was quite friendly and made my check out quite nice. The lunch special was a good price and I was happy to receive chips and salsa also. I ordered the chimichanga special, which came with beans & rice. I opted not to get the guacamole, lettuce & tomatoes that also come with it, I was happy with the flavor of each component. The rice and beans had an authentic taste, which was a nice surprise. The chimichanga was seasoned well. Which added a good flavor to the chicken (Oh, yes sorry! I ordered it with chicken. lol) . It wasn't hot or overly seasoned, just perfect. It was not as large as others I've had in volume. Actually as I cut into it, I realized that it was very skimpy of the meat. It consisted of mostly the outer tortilla. I expected the rice & beans to be a smaller portion as a lunch meal, but did not expect the chimichanga to be far, far less than full. That was disappointing. The al pastor taco tasted like a cheese burger. Chicken enchilada was ok, beef tamale was ok.. I feel like I would have had good odds with frozen food. It really seemed like they just opened and were understaffed. Wait time was actually quite short. Stuffed poblano was... Umm... Idk I wouldn't be surprised if none of the food was actually cooked today. There was a lot of flat soggyness and for the dry stuff, dryness. I'm grateful for food, I'm grateful to be able to eat, the service, and the fact that these folks are trying to make it happen. I think if I were them I'd get a consultant to overhaul the processes. Love that they have flour chips. Amazing. Salsa was spicy and delicious. Tried the fajita beef taco salad via door dash. Delivery fee was only 1.99 so that was amazing and much lower than anyone else. Steak was yummy. They made the taco salad shell which was also flour and delicious. Also got the queso which was the absolute perfect mix of creamy and spicy. Prices are extremely affordable. Most of the combo plates are 7.99! We were in town for the Renaissance Festival and thought we'd give El Jimador a try for dinner on our way home. It was a good solid choice. The fajitas were tasty, with a good ratio of meat to vegetables, as was the fajita quesadilla brava. My 8-year-old approved of the cheese quesadilla, and my 15-year-old's only complaint with the chicken chimichanga was that the chicken was shredded instead of in chunks. Me and my girlfriend recently ordered from El Jimador. Our order was the fajita nachos and a taco bowl. Being a takeout order, I asked for the topping to be separate, so that the nachos wouldn't get soggy on our way home. Upon arrival, I was told they normally don't separate them, but they did anyway!
