We stopped here for lunch last Friday after my friend ran a quick work errand in Oakdale. It's a historic bar from the fifties, so it was dark and dated. At first, we did not feel welcome, maybe because we're not regulars. No one was rude, just dismissive. My friend and I had patty melts with fries and a cup of bean soup. I don't think I've ever complained about patty melts. It was perfect. The fries were fresh and crispy too. The bean soup was okay, about a 7/10. Our server perked up and was so friendly by the end of our lunch. We loved hearing stories about the place and some of the history. It was heartwarming, and we love seeing family businesses succeed and the next generation take over. When our server asked if we liked clam chowder, we said yes, so she quickly returned to let us try a sample. This was the best clam chowder we've had, even better than Sam's Chowder House in HMB! A 20/10. It was so creamy, with big chunks of tender clam. We ended up ordering more to go. My husband was also impressed when he tried some for dinner. I finished it two days later, and it was still amazing! read more

We just had dinner here for the first time. (Had their catering and lunch several times. Been here to drink MANY times.) I was extremely pleased with my ribeye dinner. It was soft as butter, super tasty and cooked to perfection. I can't explain just how perfect the flavor of the steak was. It was everything you want from a quality dinner. My husband was shocked by the price. The meal we had should've cost us $80 but instead was just about $55 with tip. Soup, salad, two sides and the most amazing steak you will eat for just $20. Side note the homemade soup and mashed potatoes were just as good. This is a place we need to visit for dinner more often. read more

As others have mentioned you don't really get a welcome here from the guy bartender (maybe owner?) as first timers, we got a good looking over. I got 2 beers in bottles and I then asked for 2 glasses. Apparently this amused the aforementioned barkeep. My wife and I wanted a change of scenery so we drove to H-B from Manteca. Sure, it's old and quaint and maybe the food is good. I had a burger that was very tasty but the praise the clam chowder I saw on some reviews is surprising. It was watery and not many clams in there. Just tasted like cream. The young lady waitress took over for our food order and more drinks and she was pleasant. First of all I didn't order an alcoholic drink. I was visiting the "Cowboy Museum" next door and wanted to get something to eat. Why five stars? I had the best hamburger I have ever eaten - and I have eaten many. They are char-broiled but unlike anything I have eaten before. They make everything from scratch. The onion soup was about as good as it gets. Only problem is that the more you eat the more you want to eat. Great food. Service was good as well. I met the owner and the chef. Both became instant friends. I spent a lot of time with the chef. A man of worldly travels. Originally from England and has been in other places in Europe. I have been coming to Oakdale for six years and it took a visit to the nearby Cowboy Museum to find and enjoy this place. Oakdale has a lot of interesting history, and has regularly scheduled events throughout the year. I highly recommend having a meal here. My only regret is that I have missed out on having my past meals here. That won't happen again. I found their prices well in line. Be advised - cash only. I plan to visit at every opportunity. Being close to my new best motel "Holiday Inn Express of Oakdale", drinking isn't a problem, as I can walk back to my room. Next trip, less Yelping and more eating and drinking. read more

Helloooo Cowboy Central! Came here for a beverage cause this is the place to go in Oakdale. The walls are covered in cowboy memorabilia (I guess the owners son is a pretty famous Oakdale bull rider). Everyone knows everyone here, I'm sure I stood out like a sore thumb, but everyone was very friendly nonetheless. This bar is like any other country bar in the sense that it was full of cowboys, cowgirls and like another reviewer said oozes with honkey-tonk. I had such a fun successful day yesterday at my 2nd craft fair!! Met so many wonderful ppl! Plaza 131 salon and boutique was amazing!! Their store and owner is just amazing! We did a lil shopping in there and they gave me these fun stockings that will match my tree!! Along with free mimosas! The super fun/sweet bartender Brandy that works at H-B Saloon on Oakdale walked my my booth, I yelled, I luv your purse, so she went home and brought me one and gave it to me!! Shes amazing!! This is the "Oakdale" bar. Overall its ok, but if Brandy is working then its the best place to be in the valley! If you want stiff drinks at the best price and you want them fast...come see Brandy at H-B! Joe & Mike are really good at watching the door and making sure no under age a-holes try sneakin in. They can also see a problem before it starts and resolve it. They have 1 security schmuck that is the problem and if I see him and his "Security Coveralls", Im goin to The Battered Beaver. Gonna put it plain and simple...If Brandy is bartending, Im there! If Joe or Mike are security, Im there! Love the ol' timers and the regulars since the 1st time I walked in there 11 years ago, they make you feel like you right at home. This is my first Yelp review. I feel I need to write down my experience . We are from Los Angeles area . My husband and I spent a few days in March in Oakdale Ca. We came with a mission . Our son was Getting married in June and being the parents of the groom it was our pleasure to look for a place in Oakdale that we could hold the rehearsal dinner We met Mike , Mikes wife....mikes sister his son Beau and Jackie and their baby . We knew right away this was the perfect fit for our party. On a Friday night no less . We were able to decorate the banquet room the night before . Jackie told us feel free to bring a video of the engaged couple as they had a projector. Our son the best man made a video for me and his brother and soon to be sister in law . .. and all the guest to enjoy... long story short .. we dropped off the video, we were to return with our party of 50 in about an hour . We returned to the HB to find Beau and Jackie frantically bring in a tv from their home so we could play our video . They went over and above what they needed to do but we had become fast friends. Brandy the bartender was fantastic and even offered to work the wedding if we had any problems. We even exchanged phone number so we could meet up if ever they are in our town . The buffet was top notch, everyone loved the food, the service and the atmosphere. We had pulled pork, scalloped potatoes, Cole slaw, chicken, and salad. I've lived in Oakdale my whole life and finally went here mainly to see what the fuss was about. I'm so glad I went! The hostess (named Victoria) was very friendly and was so helpful in giving me suggestions on what was good to get there! I mainly went for drinks and the ones the hostess suggested were very very good(she made me the best Sex on the Beach I've ever had!). Went to the H-B tonight, a Friday. No hostess. Sat ourselves. No more than 10 people in the entire restaurant. Bartender came to the table promptly. Brought us to beers. So far so good. Downhill from here. We watched the (yes one) waitress walk around for thirty minutes. Never acknowledged our presence. She would sit and eat with patrons. I then got up and requested menus from the bartender. Waited another 30 minutes, still no attention. After an hour, placed no order. Paid for the beers and left. Horrible service. Bad experience. Worst meal out I've ever had. Service was great, despite the waitress drinking wine while serving us. My appetizer soup was very good. Then I got my burger....it was burnt and tasted charcoal.
