Mmm! Delicious! The people were right, this is the place to go! I ordered a Gyro/Befteki Sandwich, I may have liked the Befteki more- it was so MmmM! The meld of the sauces and juices of the meats. Yummm. We also ordered a Gyro/Lamb Souvlaki Sandwich, this was strange. It came with only Gyro and Souvlaki. No lettuce, nothing, just the meat wrapped in the Pita. Eh? I now work super close to this place, but even before that, I often ordered delivery from here. Their food is pretty standard, I would stick to the gyros and souvlaki options as their pizza isn't so great.. but that's fine for a place called "gyro world" - what do you expect? Love the soup, the pita bread, the chicken souvlaki but most of all, their service. The guys (and few girls) here are so kind! This is my favorite spot for gyro in NYC area. I live in Manhattan and we specifically make the drive to Queens to eat here when we are having the craving. The portions are enormous so order wisely. The platters are excellent. My favorite is the Greek salad with gyro on top. ( I like the beef and lamb gyro the best. I'm not as big of a fan of the pork gyro). The lemon potatoes are near perfection. I tried some onion rings which were a big of a disappointment. They were frozen and just thrown in the deeply fryer. The tatziki sauce at Gyro world is unequivocally the BEST. Service is nice although I do find that I have to ask for everything. ( ie water refill, to go box, check etc). I can't find one flaw with this restaurant. We are somewhat regulars at this place, coming here 1-2 a month. The waitress knows us and greets us every time we come. The service is very friendly and trained. It is a really casual restaurant, with a Greek feel. They have a huge wall saying Enjoy Your Meal in 30+ languages. The food is really cheap and fresh and delicious. The gyros are really delicious. The avgolemono soup is very tangy, but really yummy. The Greek Salad has so many ingredients, like stuffed grape leaves, so the salad is so amazing. I ordered a gyro and some onion rings and my fiance ordered a couple of slices of cheese pizza. The pizza was okay, but a little bit on the soft/soggy side, especially for a NYC joint. Disappointed my fiance, who is a native of this area. The gyro was large. A lot of meat, a lot of onions and I think a whole tomato cut into slices. But the pita tasted...stale, the gyro meat was pretty bland and was VERY DRY (which is a huge thing for me with gyros) and the tzatziki sauce was watery. I love this place, it never disappoints. More often then not this is my choice for when I am working, the food is quick and the portions are good. Every person I bring here agrees the food is amazing. When I am home I often order the Gyro Plater for two, it has all my favorites and comes in a huge tray. Me and my husband both get about two dinners and lunch from just this one tray. Just ask for a few extra pitas. It also comes with a huge portion of their amazing tzatiki sauce. Went for a late night dinner yesterday with my father. This place used to be my favorite Greek spot in the neighborhood until last night. I ordered a chicken souvlaki platter with a salad and a side of French fries. The chicken was poorly marinated, not tender and tasted like the bottom of a cooking grill. The service was poor. Our waitress did not inform us when the checks were closed for the evening and refused to serve us another drink before heading out. At Gyro World it seems that whoever prepares their food either has no sense of taste or has never tasted a souvlaki sandwich that is actually good. Thank God for the red onion or else the whole thing would have been entirely blah. I'm not exaggerating. The chicken didn't have a sprinkle of salt, let alone any other seasoning. The service is decent when eating in and there's nothing particularly wrong with the place, but they never seem to include any tzatziki sauce on to go orders. I've ordered their food to go a few times. Every single time, the cashiers always seem okay with lying straight to my face when I ask them whether or not they put a container of tzatziki sauce in the bag. After co-workers ordered from here last week, I knew I would be trying it very soon. We ordered take-out. I initially asked for the "gyro plate for two" which would have been $20.95 but I was told it only came with pita and taziki. So, instead I opted for 2 Gyro plates which each came with pita, taziki, French fries and a salad, all for $10.50 each. .. To me, that was strange. We waited for over an hour so I called to check in and was apologized to and told the guy would be here shortly. The doorbell rang a few minutes later. The food was definitely worth the wait! The Gyro was perfectly seasoned, not took greasy and tender. The pita was nice and warm which I of course dipped in the light, refreshing taziki sauce. The salad it came with was a very good size and had olives, tomato, onion, grape leaf and feta. The only complaint Ihad were the soggy French fries. This is the first time i've ever really had a gyro, and i really enjoyed it. I order the greek gyro, open sandwich which the server told me is their traditional gyro. So i was expecting it to be all wrapped up, kinda like a burrito, but it was not. Nonetheless it was still delicious, the pork was so juicy and the pita bread was perfect. The white sauce that they have with it was amazing. I could eat this everyday. My boyfriend got the beef and lamb gyro closed sandwich, which is the one that came out looking like a burrito. Best Gyro in the area for miles. No wonder people are willing to wait for seats to open up during dinner service. I was one of the lucky ones who didn't have to wait. Their Gyro Platters with Lemon Potatoes are amazing. Other places tend to overdo the lemon and make the potatoes too acidic for my palette. This place does it justice by balancing out the sour with proper seasoning and a dash of olive oil. If you are seeking a place to enjoy gyro, this is the place. No other gyro restaurant in the area has gyros that taste as good as the ones here. Their "white sauce", I think, is also made in house instead of being bought in, which I think is extremely ambitious. The food definitely comes out quickly and the waitresses are very attentive and make sure everyone is happy. As for the pitas, well, they're definitely fresh. When I'm in Queens and in the mood for a Gyro, I always make it a point to come here. I've been coming to this place since it opened up and love it every time. The place is small (about 10-15 tables) and usually is busy, but you can usually expect to be seated in just a few minutes, if not seconds. A gyro sandwich with a couple fries will only cost you $5.05 which is a pretty good deal. Part of what makes this place so special is that they love to pile the gyro meat on top, with slices of tomato, red onions and their homemade tzatziki (white sauce). Super yummy, the gyro meat always being moist and not dried out like other gyro places in the neighborhood. And their greek fries will not go unnoticed. They come nice and crispy with just the right amount of potato taste inside. Service is pretty good as the waitress will always walk by or check to see if everything is alright. Every time I come here, I do usually finding myself asking for more water, which is the only gripe. My ideal service is that if the waitress see's an empty glass, she will make sure to fill it up without you having to ask. Besides that, this place is very good. And after you are handed the bill, make sure you pay in cash and go up to the cashier to pay. Leave your tip on the table and you will leave hearty, happy, and full. read more

The reason why this place doesn't get a higher rating is the long wait we had to wait for our food. We came out here on a relatively hot Saturday, 6 of us in total. Other than that the food was pretty damn good. I think the food wait time between ordering and getting our food was close to 45 minutes. Usually most people start wondering where their food is after about 30 minutes, but once that happens each minute that goes by seems like an eternity. It definitely was 45 minutes though. Other tables came and left before we got our food, which was disappointing to me. So we ordered the massive plate of meat for 4 along with a few other things not worth mentioning. The plate of food had 7 different meats that came along with Pita and some sorta white sauce (forgive me i'm not an expert at greek food). Not really recalling what exactly i ate, the skewers were the best. The beef patty thing was very very good and seasoned very well. If they make that into a burger - it'd be amazing. The meats sit on a bed of french fries which are soggy. so don't expect the fries to knock your socks off... I've also had the greek gyro, which is apparently more authentic... it definitely tastes a little more gamey than the regular gyro. which i'm assuming is the "Americanized" gyro. in any case both gyros were ok i think the regular gyro more so. neither of these came with any lettuce just onions, tomatoes and sauce. i found that the wait for the food is pretty long but that's probably because this place is usually packed to the brim. it's a very popular place. read more

Our absolute favorite Gyro - we've been loyal since its opening days many many years ago. Everything from their meat platters, to salad and spinach pie, all so good. And while the taste is just as good, our most recent order last week was a surprising let-down as far as portions. The Gyro sandwich price has gone up in recent months, and the portions have gone way down. Clearly, significantly enough for all of us to have noticed. But we all agreed, we've still got to give it another chance just incase, it was a one-off fluke, or perhaps the cook just happened to make a mistake .. because the thought of giving up Gyro World due to a decline in value - would be such a sad thing. Fontana's has its own loyal following, and we've tried theirs too. They are known for their generously big portions at a comparable price.
