I will say this restaurant has become quite deelish! When I first went several years ago I wasn't a fan at alllll by the service, FOOD, and vibe. But when I went with my mom and decided to go for dinner it was a wonderful experience!! The restaurant is a little on the older side and they have really revamped it and turned it into a delicious one!!! We started off with their pot of melted cheese, French bread, and butter yum! The French bread was warm soft and easy to pull apart. We then got the "all day special" where you get to pick a salad or soup, a plate of entrees and a side. My mom LOVES this deal with their salmon and I got the same thing only with italian dressing on my salad. Perhaps next time I will get the bleu cheese like my mom did. Unfortunately they do baked potatoes but not mashed potatoes so I went with the fries. They were a bit thick with ranch. But to my surprise the SALMON! Was not as thin as it was last time it was a wonderful portion, cooked to perfection, and sooooo tasty!!! Now I understand why my mom loves going here often! As for the staff it was wonderful I didn't get her name but our server was an absolute sweetheart she was also ON it! All while having the entire section so we tipped her well! She also knew the menu like the back of her hand which was nice when I hadn't been in so long and had questions about the sides, sauces, etc. lol The vibe is average. It was a regular week day dinner hour and decently packed! That's always good! People working were all very polite and I like how they changed the look of the restaurant by taking down some of the cheesy decorations and leaving up more trendy ones it looks very nice!!! 5 stars well deserved! Rich, smooth, creamy cheese. Bubbling warm over a little steno flame. Lactose intolerant me couldn't resist and tried some. Mmmm. Then they had an all day special two entrees for $32.95. The choices were plentiful. Choose from the likes of sirloin, cheeseburger, salmon, shrimp, chicken Alfredo, chicken parm, chicken piccata... that's just to name a few. The entrees came with side of veggies, baked potato, and soup or salad. Or choose from the regular menu. Plus on Fridays and Saturdays , they offer prime rib. Well I have to come back to try that. We choose the cheeseburger and sirloin. I ordered the sirloin at medium rare. It came out just like I ordered, medium rare. Tender cut. Flavorful. I liked it! Hubs enjoyed his cheeseburger. I took a bite. Mmm. The waitress was super fun and engaging. She chatted about the place and family as we told her it was our first time. We met Gus (the owner) and his son Dino. Both very cool. Being a local people rave about this place. And it is doable but it's not great. My opinion is most haven't traveled or have any clue about food or different cuisines and there pallet just doesn't know the difference. But the food is bland it's lacking in so many places. And is disappointing for a steak house. Texas road house steaks taste better... the place itself is dated and old. Not sure if that's purpose but it's been the exact same for over 25yrs... service is hit and miss the several times I've been here the service is low grade at best. I had eaten there before about 6 years ago and it was good that time, this time I bought a more expensive rib eye steak meal and was very unhappy with the lack of quality of the meal. The steak was absolutely terrible. The bread had no flavor and as well the butter had no flavor. The vegetables were over cooked and awful. The meal cost $55 plus a tip, I will never eat there again. The fondue was sub par like velveta mixed with cream cheese and it still didn't help the dried out bread! I ordered Lemon Chicken picatta , which was so vinegary and sour not really lemon ? I couldent eat it ( altho the chicken was cooked just right ) such a waste of food . My baked potato was warm not hot. Hubbys Teriaki sirloin was covered with chunks of gelatinous brown stuff that looked like it came from A dog food can.The meat was edible but his first bite was gristle. Excellent food and outstanding service!. Based on several travel sites, we put this location on a 10 day road trip that included this area and are so glad. We had prime rib with baked potato and clam chowder with a Caesar salad that were all fantastic. The fresh hot bread and cheese fondue that they serve everyone was a nice surprise. So my mom recommended this place to us. So we went on Valentine's Day. They had a wait so figured that was a good sign that food was great. We were seated and given a Valentine's Day menu. The prices were double what I expected to pay but we decided to stay. The waitress we got assigned was absolutely awful. She was pushy, impatient and not kind. I don't like to be rushed when trying to order food at a new location. When we ordered we were told that splitting a plate would be a charge of 8.95 for a plate that was already 40 dollars. We just decided to get two plates instead of dealing with extra fees. When we received our soup and salad we were unimpressed by how small the appetizers were. Onto our plate of Ribs which had no flavor of real barbecue. Mashed potatoes and veggies had no real flavor. In the end it wasn't a great choice for our Valentines dinner. It gives me great pain to have to write this. We moved to Sonora about four years ago after having to close our Bay Area, 4.7-star restaurant due to the pandemic. My wife is a skilled top-end chef, so we've been wanting to try Gus's for a long time. We had visitors from the Bay Area who also have discriminating palettes. The staff was very friendly, but it took 45 minutes for our meals to arrive, and there were only four other occupied tables. Two of us ordered the $49.99 ribeye. The salads came on a tiny bread plate and literally barely covered 2/3 of the plate, single-stacked. When they arrived we all looked at each other and laughed. My wife commented she would be ashamed to serve that. If they were out of salad, they just should have told us so. The steaks were a thin piece of un marbled meat that had been improperly defrosted and was completely tasteless and dry. It tasted like a super-cheap, frozen sirloin, not a $50 ribeye. We both only ate half the steak despite arriving hungry. But at least my dog will be happy for a couple dinners ... maybe. My wife ordered liver and onions. She took one bite and said "I'm full". My friend's wife ordered the fillet mignon. It was the only edible meal of the four, and only barely. Unfortunately this will not be our "go-to" steakhouse in the future. I'm sorry to say $242 later, we were shocked and disappointed. I'm not going to give them one-star because I don't want to damage a local business. We are in town visiting family and decided to eat here. Gus's is an icon in the Sonora area. Known for amazing food. We have eaten here a few times and it's been great. If you get there early 3:30 pm you can eat off the Early Bird menu which is a dinner for two at 29.99$. That's a pretty good deal. We have had the Early Bird special before and it was delicious. However last night was pretty bad. My sister and mom had the tri tip dinner. My wife had the shrimp pasta dish and I had the salmon dinner. The service was ok. But the food I have to say wasn't anything special. I know it's an Early Bird Special menu. But that doesn't mean the quality shouldn't be lacking. I honestly don't think they are tasting the food to ensure quality. My salmon was so small and tasteless the veggies were barely cooked. The minestrone soup was not very good either the veggies were old and tasteless. I tried my wife's shrimp pasta and it was a bland. Not a hint of garlic at all. My mom and sister both weren't to impressed with their dinners. For dessert we opted for the bread pudding that arrived cold with peaches that we practiced frozen. That was it for us. We were done. We paid and left. I am pretty disappointed with Gus's. This place is a staple in Sonora and they really need to get on the ball. The interior is very dated. But it's still nice inside and honestly I like it like that. Because it has that old steakhouse type of atmosphere. But man you guys need to step it up on the quality. I was so excited to have a delicious steak. I don't have many opportunities to enjoy one nicely prepared and wanted to treat myself. I figured coming to a local steakhouse that has a great reputation with nearly five stars, that there'd be no way it would disappoint. I mean, it's a steakhouse. That's why I came here. I was so excited as I sat down and ordered my gin martini. The complimentary bread cheese fondue was a wonderfully unexpected delicious surprise. The salad was small, but fresh and crispy, served on a cold plate. When my steak was delivered, about seven minutes after I ordered it, it was accompanied by a small baked potato that was topped with a wonderful dollop of sour cream, butter and scallions and there was also a garnish of thinly sliced carrots and zucchini medallions (yes, 'garnish' because there were no more than 10 slivers, combined). Onto what was to be the star culmination of my meal - the steak. Decidedly, the worst steak I've ever had in my life. I sincerely feel horrible saying that, because I've had many steaks in my life, even from places that weren't steakhouses. I ordered a New York steak vs the Rib Eye (maybe that was my mistake, but I've had many wonderful New York steaks at steakhouses), medium rare. It was served smothered in a lovely display of beautiful mushrooms, and I was so excited to cut into it. But that is where the joy ended. I knew right as I sliced into it that something was not right. It did not give like a freshly NY seared steak normally gives to a steak knife. Honestly,I'm still trying to figure out what could have happened here. My steak came out in less than 10 minutes, if even that (I think it was between five and seven minutes. It was unusually fast..). It was barely warm. I'm not exaggerating. It was almost as if it had been pre-prepared and kept in some sort of barely heated warmer for later serving. I'm now convinced it was cooked beforehand. And its flavor was oddly bland with a strange rubbery chewiness that had a slippery 'give' to it, if that makes any sense. I guess I'm used to freshly prepared steaks that are seared and cooked on a very hot surface, basted with hot butter and olive oil, coming out so darn piping hot so that when it's served, and you initially slice into it, your tongue is greeted with the most juicy, fragrant and yummy deep bursting flavor. This steak had none of that. Zero juice, It was as if it had been bled dry. The flavor was just a nothing awful. I'm so disappointed. (insert crying emoji) I didn't say anything to the wait staff. I'm not that person. I politely asked for my check and paid full price for the meal after having only two small bites. I left the meal on my plate with a fair tip to my server because they were polite. BTW, I'm a local and am super bummed because I was excited to have quality steak that would be worthy of enjoying. I'm so bummed out. Maybe it was an off night. I don't know. Regardless, I'm convinced my steak was not prepared to order (i.e., I believe my steak was cooked a before I arrived and kept warm before serving). PS: Other people comment in their reviews about the ambiance of the restaurant. And while I agree with that observation, I figure if the steak is delectable, who really cares about the appearance of the place? I'm not pretentious that way. I just want a fresh, well prepared steak, and that didn't happen tonight. PPS: I should add that normally when you walk into a steakhouse, you are usually smacked in the face by the delicious mouthwatering aroma of seared steaks cooking in the kitchen. That should've been my first red flag... I didn't smell that once during my entire visit. Not upon entry, not while I was seated, nor when the steak was served to me. Never happened. Burned my tongue on the "fondue". 5 dollar upchardge for Cesar salad which evnded up being a downgrade from the regular salad just add Cesar dressing. The shrimp dish I ordered was so unremarkable I can't even tell you what the name of it was. And two days later I am writing this from the toilet as the meal has given me some digestive troubles. I am so disappointed my family and I had dinner at Gus's Steakhouse this evening. It was awful the minestrone soup had no flavor, what happened that soup used to be so good. The dinner the sauce on the pasta was like paste, the peach bread pudding was cold. My Sister in law had shrimp Alfredo there was no garlic, no flavor, you have to use fish stock and garlic. Oh wow, where to start? Just posting a two star review on Gus's seems sacrilegious. But sadly, our visit on Saturday, April 5th, 2025 warranted this review. My partner has been visiting Gus's for probably the last two decades. She has been insisting that we go eat there on a regular basis . My first time there, I had the prime rib medium rare and it was amazing! Our waitress was great and very attentive. Our second time there we did the two for $32 deal and it met our expectations. But I have been craving that medium rare prime rib at Gus's since my first visit. Well, we went as mentioned on Saturday, April 5th around 7pm. Business seemed slow and we were seated approximately 5 minutes after arriving. We both ordered the prime rib medium rare but it came incredibly late given the low attendance of customers. The cuts of prime rib were sub prime and over cooked to a solid medium. To be gracious, I could only down about a third of it disappointedly favoring the French fries with ranch dressing which was even more depressing. I am reluctant to say this but I could cook a better prime rib for cheaper on my rotisserie. After eating, both my partner and I sat for over ten minutes before our somewhat aloof waitress asked if we need to-go containers. My partner said yes and the check came as well a few minutes later. $99 and change for two lousy, over cooked prime ribs. Add a 20 percent tip for the inattentive waitress and eating out at Gus's might not be the way to go. I'm not going back for now. read more

Went for the early bird meal and there were lots of great choices. All of the servers were very friendly, and also efficient, given the number of people who were there. Some reviewers say the decor is out-dated, but it's clean and the old-fashioned tuck'n roll seats are very comfortable. One of the things I love most is fresh, hot bread, and Gus's has great bread. They even have a cheesy fondue-like dip for it. The next course was soup or salad, and then they brought the entrees. My friend enjoyed his chicken parmesean, and the salmon that I had was yummy. There was even dessert (small chocolate sundae, rainbow sherbet, or bread pudding). The interior is super outdated, which actually makes the experience unique. The restaurant is super clean (we didn't use the bathrooms). The staff is very friendly and accommodating. The owner's son is very visible, constantly walking the restaurant, clearing tables, seating guests, checking on the tables. Our meal started with a small fondue pot of cheese, French bread, and a nice portion of margarine (I prefer butter always). Orders were taken -- New York steak rare and chicken scaloppini. We both asked for mashed potatoes. The food arrived quickly. The steak was quite well done. We brought it to the attention of our server and the steak was quickly replaced. The chicken was tender! It lacked salt and green onion. The veggies were okay, lacked salt. The potatoes were pretty good but also lacked salt and butter. Gravy was needed. The restaurant was full! I noticed mostly streaks being ordered. This place didn't have that wow factor associated with the food. It was dinner good. Good service. Happy people were eating and ordering drinks from the bar. Me and my family when to Gus's Saturday march 1st and it was for my moms 2 year sobriety from alcohol after she was in the ICU for a week and it was also for my nephews 2nd birthday. Cindy the waiter we had was extremely rude she started off with gotta shove that in like you stole it when I was in the middle of eating and then she was just outright rude the whole night I was just 125 pounds a year ago because of drug addiction but I got my life back on track and i weight 225 but her comment made me wanna cry shame on her... they gave me 50$ gift certificate but im not going back the food was cold and my lady's food was microwaved my sister got some of the shrimp and it was sour like mouth puckering sour probably old.
