100 STARS IF I COULD. GC is a family run business and it shows. Great service by people who care about their customers and about their reputation. Whenever I've needed help with my car I just call or drive in, and it's taken care of. Bonus, whenever the care is serviced they throw in a cleaning. Bonus bonus, you can actually talk with one of the Coopers, the family running the business. Where else can you do that? TBH the gas costs a little more than at the nearest competitor but I'll always throw my business to Gus Cooper. Gotta support local business if you want them there to support you. read more

My car died in their lot early Sunday morning. I left a note intending to have my car fixed at their shop because it was convenient. A man called me later that morning to say to come by with a key and they'll take a look at it on Monday and call me with an estimate. I never get a call with an estimate, when I called to check on my car, I was simply told they had found and fixed the problem and it would cost about $200. After paying $120 for a battery (What is that, 100% markup?!) plus $75 for labour, they said the car was ready to pick up. Took the bus there, drove my car less than 1 mile, AND THE CAR DIED AGAIN!! They hadn't diagnosed it properly and simply assumed it was the battery! They towed the car back and ended up charging me an additional $300 (including tax) for a new ignition coil (again... 100% markup?!) and labour. We don't believe it would have cost us $500 if they would have found the problem the first time. They also wasted our time to bus there - once only to fork over $200 and have the car die right after then have to walk the rest of the way home, then bus back hours later just to pay another $300. After this experience, I would say avoid Gus Coopers Services because they wasted my time and I felt over they overcharged me for the parts. read more

Tow review. Popped a hole in my tire & don't have a spare (and can't fix a sidewall hole w/ my fix it kit). OK, called AAA as I sat and listened to the air hiss out of my tire. Showed up w/in an hour (called to say he was there so I could leave my pathetic watch). By the time I walked back (less than a minute) he had the tire re-inflated & had evaluated the situation. He advised me that the car + tires were new enough that if I wanted to go down a few blocks firestone could probably set me up for only 1 tire replacement. He said it was my decision and he could still honor my original idea and take me to a les shwab if I wanted but (b/c I had Firestone tires) I'd need at least 2 tires from them. Sure enough - he stayed with me & guided me to Firestone who had me quickly taken care of with only one tire! THANK YOU!! read more

I had a tow truck gentleman come out to assist me with a tow via AAA. This was probably the least helpful tow experience I've ever had. The guy was full of sighs, eye rolls and judgement. He made me feel like a burden, not to mention his scathing attitude. I unfortunately lost the smart key fab (the only one I had) to my car. I had some spare time to have it towed to the dealership to purchase a new one and have it reprogrammed, which I was excited to accomplish and be able to again drive the car. When the gentleman showed up, he said he would have to go get a different type of truck because of where the car was parked. Ok....fine. When he came back with said different truck, he tried for about two minutes to position the truck in such a way that he could tow the car. Apparently it was my fault that I didn't happen to know the owners of the surrounding vehicles and he suggested I start knocking on doors to figure it out. Luckily, the neighbors were as helpful as possible...but to no avail, the owners of the cars in the way were not home. His 'tip' for me was that I should have a spare set. Really? Dude.....of course I should have a spare set... BUT I DONT. Not only was losing my whole key chain one the most infuriating and traumatic events of late, this fine gentlemen tells me, as if it wasn't the most obvious solution ever, that I should really have a spare set in case I lose one. He decided he was going to leave since he wasn't going to get anywhere with the car and that I should call them back if one of the surrounding vehicles vacates their parking space. I will not be requesting the device of this company again and have requested via AAA to send my call somewhere else. I fully understand the predicament of the other vehicles surrounding mine being in the way of a successful tow....but I could really have done without his attitude and judgement. Terrible customer experience. I'm thankful he couldn't tow the car so I would have had to ride with him in the truck to the dealership. I wasn't even the person who called for a tow, but I saw that a car in front of my home was going to be towed. I went out to offer to move my vehicle, which was directly in front of the car to be towed. The driver was rude and dismissive (and he actually thought I was the customer!). I was trying to make his job easier. He did end up pulling in front of the other car, using the space I provided by moving mine. If I were to ever need the type of services this company provides, I would go elsewhere for sure. read more

WOW. I went to the grocery store, went to start my car, and nothing. The good folks at AAA said they would send "the guy." The guy came, told me he didn't think it was the battery, but the starter, and offered to tow me anywhere I wanted. I chose a shop I used to go to YEARS ago. Without being pushy, the guy told me that place was under new management and if I wanted, he could see if his shop could get it fixed for me the same day. He called, somehow got the car to turn over, and I followed him to his shop, Gus Coopers. Yes, I was skeptical. It is inside the Shell station. The guy told me it was probably the starter, so I was expecting them to "uncover" all sorts of hidden things I needed to pay for, but I am a nanny and I had a baby strapped in the back and need my car, so I signed it over. Then, the first big event--they offered to drive me home in my car so the baby had her seat (and we got home safely and lawfully) and then drive the car back to get it repaired. I was starting to build a little trust. Then the second big event--they called me right away to let me know they had diagnosed the problem--dead battery. Okay, I was a little annoyed that the guy had told me it wasn't the battery, and now they are saying it is, so I expected them to charge me for a new starter and a new battery. But Jeff (the dude on the phone) didn't. He said the battery was the original (eight years old) so it is expected and the starter looked good. I gave them the go ahead to change it out. he told me the cost and was really transparent. I was really starting to trust and like them. The third big event was them calling me two hours later telling me my car was finished and then orchestrating schedules and going WAY out of their way to come pick me back up in my own car (again, baby seat), and driving me back to the shop so I could pay. They easily could have said that I needed to just come get it, but they didn't. They found a way to work with me which I really appreciated. Finally, the smaller events that make a big difference. One of the employees comes to pick me up and I noticed they washed and vacuumed the inside of my car. It felt like a new car. We all know clean cars run WAY better than dirty ones (tee hee hee), and I really appreciated the gesture. I was also surprised that the bill was EXACTLY as I had been quoted. However, written on the bill I noticed they checked my entire car and made recommendations, but didn't push them on me AT ALL. My tires are a little sad, but driveable. All of my fluids are topped off. They wrote these things so I could see them, but didn't say to me, "Hey, you are really needing tires. You should buy some now," or anything. I was just really impressed at the honesty and the lack of pressure. They tested the battery, checked over the entire car, fixed the problem, and cleaned it inside and out in four hours?! Yeah, awesome. I have already been talking to all of my friends and anyone that will listen about how great these people are and how far out of their way they went for me. Soooo... on Wednesday I went to work... same ol' same ol'... finished at the normal time, drove back from Issaquah... pulled into the ARCO (I know, shut up) on 85th and Aurora, filled up my tank... turned the key... NOTHING. Starter dead. Good game. I don't remember the fella's name from Gus Cooper that AAA sent out but he was there in like ten minutes, super friendly, and towed my loser *ss to Gus Coopers Service Center. Within 30 minutes they told me the problem, quoted me, and I went home. Confirmed it was a fair price with research, actually ended up a little cheaper than most places. It was done first thing in the morning, and they were nice enough to take a credit card payment over the phone (no further explanation on that one needed =P ). Thanks guys. I have a special car. He requires a lot of attention, or he breaks down. He also needs a lot of love, pampering, and apparently, a good third of my paycheck every month. So, needless to say, I call AAA a lot. They have almost always sent me someone from Gus Coopers, and the drivers have always been wonderful. They've shown up at 5am, 9pm, in the snow, and always have a smile. And somehow, they make me smile, which is especially impressive considering I'm usually in the middle of kicking my evil-moneygrubbing-car while sneakily plotting how to unload it on some sweet, unsuspecting consumer (any ideas?). I like that they'll call when they're 5 minutes away, so I don't have to sit outside and wait. Just tonight, while switching out a busted tire courtesy of a huge pothole (on 3rd Ave NW - beware! It'll eat your car alive!), the driver told me how to file a claim with a city to help cover the cost of the repair. And none of them have seemed to have a problem helping this (obviously) black girl out. So, yeah, I'd recommend 'em. read more

EXCELLENCE -- This is not what you'll find at Gus Cooper, sadly. A three decade association comes to an end today. Imagine, my 93 year old aunt lost her only daughter on Tuesday and yesterday she lost her only son. My two cousins are gone. My head is still reeling. I'm driving my 86 year old mother to the ferry to take her over to be with her sister on Bainbridge. But my wiper blade was broken, my spare was unopened, and it was confusing how to install. And it had begun to rain. So we pull into Gus Cooper and ask if they know the trick to installing it. "Well, I don't know they are tricky". "Oh" I say, "I don't have much time and I need to make that ferry." "Well, we are busy and we don't have time for you." Heavy sarcasm. They say, "Well pull around and well take a look WHEN WE HAVE TIME". Eyeroll. I said "Guys, be nice". "We ARE being nice". They say. So I pull around. Wait. Wait. Wait. The taller sarcastic one just slowly does his work on the car, ratchet this, tweak that. Clearly, punishing me for saying something they've heard a million times before and should be able to handle without getting annoyed. First time for me. They were stalling. Deliberately. My mother was anxious about missing the ferry so we left and prayed the rain would stop. Thank God we made the ferry. And my Mom helped me figure out how to install the wiper blades. Could have taken the guy 30 seconds to help us. But they just didnt care about doing a good job. If they can't do a good job with this simple communication. How good could they be with their work? Attitude is everything. It costs nothing to be kind and helpful. It spreads goodwill and makes everyone uplifted. We will go to a different station now. We will not use them for emergency Triple AAA either. Whatever you do, be excellent. read more

First off-their driver almost merged into me! had I not threw myself over (almost endangering everyone on the road including my passenger and I) he would have ruined my vehicle as well as the car he was towing. Secondly-I called their number pretty upset, fairly-so, the first person hung up. At that point im so infuriated that this company isnt taking this seriously and is so unprofessional I called again angry and I let them know if they refuse to release driver info I would call the cops to which the guy on the phone rudely said go ahead and call the cops then HANGS up again for the second time. This company is absolute garbage and I hope the owner will hire more respectful employees who actually care about the safety of others on the road. Not to mention almost ruining the car you are paid to tow. Cops were called as well. read more

I can't speak for others, but I had a really good experience with Gus Coopers today. I brought my car in at about 7:30 this morning; one of the Coopers called me about three hours later with a diagnosis and estimate (I needed a bunch of work done on my brakes). The estimate seemed really reasonable, given my limited knowledge. (He also noted another minor issue and gave me an estimate on that work for future reference, even though I declined it today. There was absolutely no pressure or "hard sell", just an FYI.) They called me at about 1:15 to say that the car was done (!!!). When I went to pick it up, I noticed that it looked suspiciously shiny and clean (as opposed to the layer of pollen, bird doodoo and other Seattle detritus that had coated it when I dropped it off). As I was paying, they informed me that they had washed and vacuumed out my car as part of the service. This may be S.O.P., but it was certainly a pleasant surprise to me! After paying, I was given a detailed receipt with the breakdown of all charges (parts and labor). I was also treated with respect and courtesy throughout. Good job, guys. I've been taking my vehicles to this station since the year 2000. I have been extremely satisfied over the years. They work on my 50 plus year old car and my newer Honda Element. I am treated with respect and I don't feel like I've ever been over charged. They've unlocked my sons car, and towed me multiple times. They're an old school business and have been around since the 1950's. Whenever they work on our vehicles we get a complimentary car wash. A very nice service! read more

Stopped to get gas on my way to work. When I went to pull out, my car decided that it didn't know how to shift gears anymore. I may not be a mechanic, but even I know better than to try to drive a vehicle with a possible transmission problem. Called AAA, gave requisite info, was told that a tow would be there within an hour. Flatbed showed up at 56 minutes. Mike, the driver, talked with me about the problem, then proceeded to load my car and transport us both to the repair place. Obviously knew a lot about cars because he commented on my particular model being a less common one. Apparently it was a particularly busy morning - he kept getting calls on the radio while we were en-route. Incredibly polite, professional, helpful and informative with me, their dispatcher and the other drivers. Had to take a slightly roundabout way to my repair place because of maneuvering the flatbed, but didn't charge me for the excess mileage it created. Got me and my car where we needed to go as rapidly and safely as possible. Direct billing to AAA, so minimal hassle for me. Excellent job, guys! read more

I wish I could give them no stars. Having seen their trucks driving around the North end with "24 hour service" on the boom, they were the first people I thought of when a lady friend I was with had car problems in Fremont the other night. I called their number, and it rang and rang. We tried several times, in case the person who was supposed to be answering the phone had stepped away for a moment. Nothing! No dispatcher, no answering service, not even the courtesy of a message that they were closed. They were no help for a stranded motorist. Lincoln Towing, on the other hand, answered the phone and promptly had a truck with a very courteous driver to our rescue. Their number is going in my phone, and I will never even think of calling Cooper's again. read more

The car was in Fremont with 2 flat tires and I was communicating all the way from Maryland state via phone. Nick could have charged me any price. We've gone to Gus' ever since we moved to Seattle for car issues. However, the last two times we've gotten service from them it's been SO bad I would rather walk 5 miles out of my way to just find an oasis rather than to ever call or set foot into this place again. The other morning the key wouldn't even turn to start the car. Neither my husband nor I had any idea that if you turn the wheel a certain way while parking it will LOCK the steering column. We called at 6:45 a.m. before work, to a place we thought was 24-hours. Their tow guy was coming in at 7:00 a.m., fine.. He arrives. Is a COMPLETE A-HOLE, doesn't even explain what the problem is until I MAKE him. Then we get charged $72 for the guy to turn the wheel, start the car in less than 30 seconds and treat us like crap. I wrote this off, everyone has bad mornings.. I shouldn't have. Today, we needed service for an entirely different problem. My husband called their location and the GIRL on the phone tells him that it's $100/hr labor. So, in essence, they can take 3 hours to LOOK over our car to just tell us the problem and we're already out $300. Are you F-ING kidding me? I don't think so. This, coming from a place that has consistently changed the issues with our car each time we bring it in. Telling us one thing, then another thing, then another. So, when we think and budget around fixing something like a belt, then we're told the belts are fine but yada yada isn't.. It seems fishy. I'd never have them my touch vehicles, nor give them cash for GAS ever again. And since we're a AAA member, I'm going to even let them know about their dishonesty so they don't ever recommend this place to other members. read more

I called aaa, told them i have an all wheel drive vehicle. They send gus coopers. So when the driver (in a wheel lift truck) shows up he proceeds to tell me i need a flatbed. Hmmm, why didn't they send a flatbed in the first place? Because they get paid to show up and reject the call. I'm pretty sure gus coopers doesn't even have a flatbed. Everything about my experience with Gus Coopers was exceptional. I broke down about five blocks away from the shop and called AAA for a tow. Gus Coopers was able to pick me up within 10 minutes. The tow driver (Dino) was super friendly and made me feel well taken care of. He offered to have the shop diagnose the problem for $50. Dino called a few hours later to tell me they had found the problem, researched it to get a more accurate assessment, and had an estimate ready. Then he encouraged me to take all the time I wanted to research the issue/price on my own before giving the go-ahead on the repair. He even invited me in to talk with the repair guy (Paul) the next morning. After calling Honda and other repair shops I found that the price estimate was very fair. I went over the next day and Paul showed me all the parts that were broken and explained what had happened and how he was planning on fixing it. They said it may take 3-4 days (due to waiting on parts to be shipped) but the repair was completed in two days AND at a 10% discount. To top it off, Paul noticed that my key remote battery was dying so he replaced it free of charge! Over the top service, wonderful communication, and fair prices. Based on the praise from the Yelpers here, I called Gus Coopers Services to tow my sickly Saab (busted radiator hose) in Capitol Hill to Ballard. They were extremely courteous, called me back to clarify how long it would take for the tow truck to arrive, and called me when the truck was 10 minutes away. When the operator arrived, he was extremely friendly, confirmed that my choice of service garage was a good one (and provided reasons why), and asked where I had heard about the towing service (hi if you're reading this!). He got my saab quickly and safely to where it needed to go. I believe that the price was fair (my one regret was that I didn't have Triple A to cover it) as well for the service received. Never used the garage aspect of this place. Though I have got gas here from time to time. The price of gas is always a few cents more expensive here than at the 76 station across the street so it is always dead while the 76 station is busy. If I am in a hurry and can't wait at 76 I fuel up here. Besides it being a shell station means you get free air for your tires. For that service alone I will pay the premium from time to time. Minus one star for being more expensive than a station across the street....always! read more

There is never a good time to have a dead battery. When you get into you're car to go somewhere and it doesn't start, you know you're late already. That was not the for me Friday. I figured out I had a dead battery, I called Gus Cooper, and one of the Cooper sons was at my car with a battery jumper in under 10 minutes. No kidding. If you live within a couple miles of these guys and need timely help, I highly recommend these guys. read more
