Wasn't sure about this restaurant because of the mixed reviews but close to where we were staying so wanted to give this a try. The food was great and service good. We were a party of 6, so had a good selection of share plates. Had a good greek wine to start and their fried anchovies, taramasalata with trout caviar, & lamb ribletts. They were so delicious and the hot pita bread with olive oil such a great accompaniment. Had their Dakos salad and braised greens for our veges and moussaka and whole fish for entrees. Wow was it all tasty and good. Loved their version of moussaka, crispy/ crunchy eggplant inside. We were all full with great company and satisfied stomachs. read more

Was excited to love this place but walked away feeling a little neutral! There was not a ton of ambience, the lighting was nice and low at that perfect date-night level, but other than that not much of an environment. The wine list includes classic great Greek grapes, but I went for a cocktail instead which was delicious. The food we ordered was a range. The grilled lamb riblets we had were a 9 or a 9.5! Highlight of the meal for me with the sweeter date and interesting dill ish ranch dipping sauce. The spicy whipped feta started out seeming alright but grew on me and the warm pita was a great touch. The moussaka was low for me, having had the real thing in Greece, and unfortunately I've had better spanakopita in honestly a lot of places. So while it didn't wow me I still had a good time and walked away feeling full and satisfied, if only a little underwhelmed. This place is not good. I shoulda known if I want Greek food I just gotta get myself to astoria. The tomatoes and cucumbers in the salad were not fresh, crispy, or juicy, the feta was lacking funk n flavor. Why tf were there peppers in the Greek salad? The spinach pie was not crispy at all, which is like kinda the whole point. The drinks were just not good, very small, not tasty, like idk who made it the cocktail menu but it's like the didn't even taste it. The cup smelled like egg (granted it did have egg white) and I could barely enjoy the drink with that smell. The chicken was actually good, super juicy and charcoaled lemon, just a bit too salty but otherwise enjoyable. The hostess was giving pretentious energy like girl the food here isn't even good sat outside and there were birds nests in the awning, was scared they would shit on me. Waitress was nice but didn't even bring us water. All in all this place is expensive, the food n drinks were bad, and I will not be returning! read more

Some of the best food in New York! The homemade pita "pockets" were so good we had to get another order. I got the gyros and they were perfect. It was pork but it tasted perfect with the toppings. The salad was so special as well. I cannot recommend this place enough! read more

We love to explore the area and visit Nami Nori often. I was waiting patiently for this to open and I AM SO GLAD IT DID. The style is very open-- the finishes feel light and fresh. The old picture frames on the wall gives the restaurant such a warm touch. You can tell alot of love went into this. At first glance, the place looks small but after you pass the kitchen you can see a bigger dining room in the back. We had a reservation but when we arrived we asked to sit at the bar, the host was more than willing to accommodate. A perfect view of the open kitchen and really close to all the wine bottles. Sanders helped us navigate the menus and explained in detail about the dishes and drinks. He was pleasant to talk to and provided the perfect amount of service! Sarah and Demetri, the masterminds behind the concept, were present and casual. their demeanor was warm and lively. I love to see passion projects come into fruition and most importantly deliver on vision. That's whats happening here at Gus and Martys. This meal will be imbedded in my brain for a long time. The service and the food were top notch. Round one consisted of Spinach Pie and Lamb Riblets. I will just say get BOTH OF THESE. The spinach pie is so cheesy and packed with spinach. Great flavor and texture. Their version seems to have more of a creamy, melty cheese as opposed to just feta in the traditional version. When I saw the word 'riblet' on the menu, it immediately reminded me of applebee's riblets. Little did I know that it might be the highlight of my entire meal. They are so perfectly cooked and the puffed amaranth with the date combo is GENIUS. Round two blessed me with the BEST pork gyro I have ever had along with some octopus souvlaki. This was truly an experience that I will never forget. I have been to many first week openings and always seem to find minor flaws, Gus and Marty's only flaw was being perfect! Now they will have to maintain this standard forever! The pork had perfect charred pieces along with juicy tender pork. The fresh house made pita was thin, hot, and delicious. I mean, even down to the fries-- they were perfect, hot and crispy. I couldn't have asked for better. I make octopus often because it is my favorite protein and when I have it out I almost always find mine to be better. When I tried the octopus, I was speechless. Great texture, fresh, and just flawless. The culinary team is working so diligently to bring us high quality, flavorful food and I am here for it! I had no idea that I would be so elated watching chefs roll out pita dough right in front of my face. Kudos to the kitchen team-- keep it up. Round three concluded out first visit with a take on a baklava type of roll over ice cream. The chef brought it out to us and I was showering him with complements on the food because they deserved it. It was the perfect ending to an incredible night. I will be back. I will bring friends. I will make friends with the entire staff. This is my plan! I'd wish you luck but you really don't need it! P.S. So glad this spot opened- great Greek was completely missing from the area! We got the Horiatiki salad, the dips, the spinach pie and whole fish. Everything was suuuuper solid and the fish had the best char and olive oil taste. The restaurant is also reaaaally gorgeous and the waitstaff and hosts were lovely. It's been a while since Williamsburg has had a top tier Greek place. Maybe not since the days of MP Taverna, once located only two blocks away, circa 2015, when Obama was still President. There's Meraki, which while very good, has diner vibes. Gus and Marty's is in a sleek, cavernous space across from McCarren park and the food is truly out of this world. Not only is this the best Greek food I have ever had, it is one of the best meals I've had in Williamsburg in a very long time. What works is mostly a mix of the traditional (taste that cinnamon in the Moussaka!) and some clever risk-taking. With attentive service, and solid cocktails, this was a rare 10/10 experience for us. Plates, other than the biggest courses, tend to be on the smaller side, making for more of a mezze experience, which makes you order more, and can add to a bit of sticker shock at the end, so just be aware this is a high-end restaurant, not a casual gyro-and-go kind of place. Their prices aren't listed online, so I'm adding this note for you here. But I appreciated that I didn't feel bloated, full, overfed. Things I wouldn't miss: the riblets, the dips with hand-stretched pita that is out of this world, the moussaka, petit gyros, and the baclava sundae. The main thing that makes this place special is the fresh ingredients (note the pretty tomatoes in piles across from the kitchen) and an incredible amount of skill in the kitchen. This is the 1st time I have ever posted a review of a restaurant. This place is a joke. The food was terrible and the service was actually worse than the food! I am not sure who is actually running this restaurant, but there is clearly NO quality control in either food or service. Our waiter came by 1 time at the beginning of the meal to take the order, and we only saw him for a 2nd time at the end of the meal. We had a party of 6, so we ordered several plates. First time trying this restaurant and this was hands-down the best Greek food I've had in NYC! Such a hidden gem! We ordered two Gus cocktails, pita with tzatziki, spinach pies, lemon chicken, roasted whole branzino, and got the cheesecake and the baklava with ice cream for dessert. Not a single dish missed the mark. I was so impressed! Everything was excellent. One of the owners, Demetri, came to our table a couple times towards the end of our dinner to chat and he was very jovial and gregarious. It was wonderful hearing a bit about the background of the restaurant from him. Will definitely be back and will be telling friends and family about this excellent Greek restaurant in Williamsburg! I especially enjoyed the braised lamb shoulder -- super different from other versions I've tried. Thank you Chef! I cannot say enough about the wonderful dinner we had at Gus and Marty's Greek Restaurant in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. It all began with the reservation process. It's a gift to be able to alert the chef when going to a restaurant when a guest (or two) has food allergies. This makes the dining experience better as well as giving the chef time to think about how to adjust ingredients on the menu to client's food allergies. Our waitress, Ashley was incredible in every way. She was prepared when we entered the restaurant to review not only our food allergies but how the chef could adjust our order to reflect both our food needs and also our culinary experience. Some restaurants would shy away from a client that could not eat dairy, mushrooms, pineapple, meat, or eggs which one of our friends have, as well as my gluten intolerance. The other two in our group had no food problems except deciding what to order from the very exciting menu, Greek food with some twists. Chef Pete made it all happen.Sauces were served on the side when necessary and substitutes were provided so no-one missed out on a course. To begin, we were very impressed with the variety of Greek natural wines. We were not familiar with any of them but at Ashley's suggestion, we selected the Stiianou Great Mother Amber, Vidiano 2022. It is from Crete, one of our favorite islands and we loved her suggestion for wine. For starters, we ordered the Trio of Meze- including the Taramasalata drizzled with caviar, the tzatziki's, and the charred eggplants. The 4 of us shared this, but two without allergies enjoyed the gorgeously prepared hot pita bread, made right there in the wood stove. The dairy free person had fagicoio bread, and I was given fresh vegetables for the dips in lieu of bread. Every dip was yummy, a little taste sensation for the mouth. We also shared grilled octopus that melted in our mouths. It was better than the octopus I have had anywhere. We had two orders of grilled Sardines as well, which were delicious. For our main course, we shared the lemon chicken and the charred whole Branzini, also outstanding. Our vegetable side was gorgeous, tasty, blistered peppers. We were so incredibly full that we could not finish the chicken despite everything being perfectly prepared and beautifully presented. Of course, we still managed to save just enough room to taste their traditional Baklava, Olive Cake, as well as their fresh vanilla ice cream with strawberry sauce. Again, telling each of us, which we could eat based on food allergies. We also found out that their olive oil actually came from their family farm in Greece- wonderful! The waitstaff and host were all attentive, knowing when to approach and when to give us space to savor our meal. The four of us were talking about a return booking even before leaving the restaurant. The restaurant itself is well designed and inviting, with a modern looking open kitchen, featuring a huge wood stove, placed between the indoor seating areas. They also have a number of outside tables. We hear it is already a neighborhood staple, but for us, taking the L train from Manhattan to the first stop in Brooklyn will make it a regular spot for us as well. The staff all seem to love working there, a very high compliment. They shared that the photographs you see on the wall are all several generations of family photos, of the proud owners. Dining here is like being at a grandma's or aunt's house for a delicious family meal. You must experience this amazing restaurant. read more

For anyone who has never been to Greece or who hasn't had authentic Greek food, you may not be disappointed. Otherwise, Gus & Marty's is a horrible representation of what Greek food is or can be (as well as a horrible representation of Greek hospitality). I'm shocked this restaurant is purportedly run by someone of Greek heritage. The food was mediocre at best. The Horiatiki (Greek Salad) had sliced green olives (not traditional), pitted Kalamata olives (not authentically served with whole olives containing pits), maybe two bites of cucumber, barely any tomatoes, thinly sliced red bell pepper that was barely discernible, and very few capers (when a traditional horiatiki has abundant quantities of cucumber, tomato, red bell peppers, red onion, and capers). The predominant ingredient in the salad was two large slabs of feta -- it really should have been called a feta salad. The gyro and grilled sardines were overly seasoned -- extremely salty to the point of not even being enjoyable. The gigantes (a traditional Greek bean dish) were underseasoned and lukewarm -- the beans were overcooked and tasted like they were from a can instead of properly prepared; the entire dish had very little flavor. The dips were just meh; I could buy better at my local bodega. Our server was absolutely clueless about Greek food. She even pronounced gyro with a long "I" sound (like the shorthand for the word "gyroscope") as opposed to the proper way to pronounce the sandwich ("yeero"). If you're going to pretend to have a Greek restaurant, at least train the staff to properly pronounce the dishes; otherwise, change the name on the menu to "sliced pork pita sandwich." Additionally, the restaurant offers no hot teas of any kind -- let alone traditional Greek mountain tea. Finally, service was rushed. We were the first seating for a table of three at 5pm, and our third guest was going to sit in the chair at the table where it had been placed instead of along the wall on the banquette -- but then a member of the staff came to take the chair away and said they were moving it "to make it easier on the servers." What?! There was no proper firing of our dishes; everything came out rapid fire instead of thoughtfully paced and coursed. Definitely not worth a visit unless the quality of food and staff training markedly improve. read more
