brought my car in because it was shaking after I hit something, and I specifically mentioned I was concerned the rear axle needed attention. I was later told the car had been checked, test driven, and was good to go, and that no issue with the axle was found. The only service performed was an alignment. The very next day, the same problem returned, the car was still shaking and pulling heavily to the right. That was extremely frustrating, especially after being assured everything had been thoroughly inspected. What concerns me most is that I took the car to another mechanic down the road, and he was able to visibly identify the problem right away. That left me feeling like my concerns were not taken seriously, or that the inspection I was told was performed may not have been done thoroughly. I don't like leaving negative reviews, especially for a local business in my own neighborhood. I make a point to support independent shops over big corporations whenever I can, which is why this was especially disappointing. I'm sure many customers have had positive experiences here, and I'm not questioning everyone's integrity. But based on my experience, I felt let down and didn't feel I received honest or competent service. Because of that, I won't be returning. read more

GO TO THE OTHER GUNNELLS ON MAIN STREET. Gunnell's Tire & Auto on Gilbert & McKellips is consistently some of the worst service and general attitudes that I've experienced in the auto-mechanic business. Poor communication and just a general attitude of contempt. Just the other week I dropped off my car for a check-engine light, and they charged $73 to run a diagnostic test, only to tell me that I needed to spend another $400 dollars to do ANOTHER diagnostic test. Nearly $500 just in diagnostic tests alone - before they would even start working on the car. And the initial $73 diagnostic test was to "test-drive" the car, and pull the engine codes (which you do at Auto-Zone for free). $73 bill for 10 minutes of work is insane. What's the hourly rate on that? $430/hr might be one of the most expensive rates in the market right now. Meanwhile, the Gunnell's Tires & Service on Main Street was able to RESOLVE the entire issue in less than 1 hour, for a FRACTION of the cost. (And they didn't need to run any extra diagnostic tests either). How is it that one place will charge upwards of $500 simply to diagnose an issue that the other place can resolve for less than a tenth of that entire cost? "Oh well you chose to bring your vehicle to us." Yes, and I will not be bringing it back there again. What a joke. read more

I live less than a mile from Gunnell's. I've had two experiences with them. The first was when I got a quote to replace my truck shocks. They were by far the highest bid I received so I didn't go there. The second time I went there was to have them look at my tires. They are Michelins and they're showing "chunking" where relatively large pieces of the tire are coming off. I was directed to an authorized Michelin tire seller to have them evaluated. Gunnell's was the closest so that's where I went. Big mistake. When I got there, one of their employees came out and looked at the tires. He said that I've been driving on dirt roads and this is happening because of that. I could believe that but for one, the damage happened after a trip where I went 2000 miles on paved roads. Secondly, they're off-road tires! He tried to tell me that was normal. I countered with the fact that I've been buying tires for 40 years and have never seen this on any tire of any kind, any amount of wear, or any age. It's a defect. He disagreed and wouldn't listen to anything I said. What an $$$****. Gee, with employees like that and "customer service" like that, why would anyone go there? I certainly won't and you shouldn't either. They're getting one star because I can't give zero. read more

Somehow I picked up a razor blade in my rear driver's side tire that was quickly deflating it. Inflated it again, but it lost 10 lbs just going a half a mile . Spotted Gunnell's and pulled on to ask for a tire repair. They set it up right away and had us on our way in about 25 minutes. Best yet, they said it was no charge. My car's computer told me that one of my tires was low on air pressure. I went to Discount Tire and and they told me that the tire had two nails in it, one of which could not be repaired. Un/fortunately, they didn't have a tire that would fit my car in stock. So I went to Gunnell's, which is where I usually go and will always go from now on. They determined that while there were indeed two nails in the tire, only one of them caused a leak, and it could be repaired. So they fixed the tire for free. They also set the air pressure on all my tires to what is recommended for my tires and my car, whereas Discount Tire over-filled all four tires. read more
