Absolute Disgrace of a Business - Unacceptable Substitutions and Zero Customer Service! I am completely shocked and furious by the absolute lack of professionalism, basic courtesy, and competence at this place. I paid $12 for a Chocolate Soufflé (Lava Cake), which explicitly states on the menu that it is a hot baked item served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Instead of delivering what I paid for, the kitchen unilaterally decided to scoop plain chocolate ice cream into a regular, unlabeled plastic delivery cup, which arrived completely melted into a warm liquid. To make matters worse, they apparently were completely sold out of the savory cheese pastry I actually ordered, as well as the two bottles of Lemon Snapple I ordered for my friend's kids. Rather than picking up the phone to call me out of basic courtesy to offer a refund or an alternative, they silently threw a random spinach stick into the bag--an item that isn't even on their delivery menu. Even worse, instead of the Lemon Snapple, they substituted apple juice, which the children are extremely allergic to. The staff at this bakery carelessly endangered the health and well-being of children and completely wasted my money. They then tossed in a random chunk of chocolate cherry cake without my consent, clearly using a freebie to cover up the fact that they completely ripped me off on my actual order. Furthermore, packing hot food into delivery containers with completely fractured, smashed plastic lids is a major safety hazard. Sending random dairy and high-sugar items to a customer without checking is a serious liability. You do not treat paying customers like a dumping ground for whatever leftovers happen to be sitting in your display cases at the end of a Friday shift. I will never order from here again. If you cannot fulfill an order accurately, do the professional thing: cancel the item and issue a refund. This business takes customers' money and refuses to deliver what was paid for. I'd be curious if anyone could explain to me the phenomenon of Turkish establishments proliferating in otherwise Russain/Georgian/Uzbek Brighton Beach. Is this to cater to Russians' nostalgia for vacations on the Black Sea? In any case, despite this being a branch of a much-trusted brand (see my 5 star review for the Cliffside Park location), the baklava looked rather stale on a recent visit, and the su boreki that we tried was decidedly mediocre. My saddest moment here was when I asked if they had sahlep, my favorite Turkish sweet hot beverage, which is served at the Cliffside Park branch. Stopped by here for some baklava and coffee when I happened to be in the area this past summer. This is a Turkish chain with a few locations in the NYC metro area, though this was my first time visiting one. They have quite the variety of baklava on display, and other Turkish and Middle Eastern/Mediterranean sweets as well. I chose a few different types of baklava to go, as well as a Turkish coffee, and an order of their knafeh. The knafeh took a little bit of time to make, so you may wish to call in ahead if you're trying to order that. The Turkish coffee was good - strong and bitter. The baklava pieces I had picked out were all so tasty and they kept well in my fridge for the next few days. The knafeh was interesting, and I'm not sure I would get it again since I wasn't as crazy about the taste, but I appreciated having to finally try out the dish for myself. Came here again after 2 years. I am reviewing the desserts, not the ambiance. I personally like my baklava more soaked, and not too sweet, and this place had what I like. It so has other lesser known varieties of desert, rice pudding two types for example. Will I travel here just for baklava? No. But definitely will stop by and grab some to eat and for take away. Consistency is very important in restaurant/cafe business. It starts with the management, which I don't think they have one. Staff is either running around like chickens without heads, or 3 people watching while 4th is making a coffee with a line of customers getting restless. I've turned around and left several times to get my coffee across the street or at any other of many cafes in the area. Who has time to waste being ignored? Most pastries are 2-5 days old and stale. Cappuccino machine is often broken. Cheese pie is good but top is greasy, when it's in stock. Past month I don't see it anymore, which is a favor to those who care about their health/weight. hopefully they will make some improvements as I want to keep going back. Hate to see so many places close in the past few years. read more

Didn't try the Baklava. It was breakfast and coffee for me this morning. This place is my larger inside than it appears on the outside. It's a Turkish establishment from Turkey founded in 1871. This location has been around for about 20 years. Situated a block away from the Q train exit (in the northside), it is worth going just for their Turkish coffee. I got the double. It was the perfect temperature, consistency and taste. I ordered 3 eggs breakfast. It can with sliced cucumbers and some tomatoes and Turkish bread. Total cost was $9.25! I then purchased a few baked goods to go. I forget what the are called but it looks like a twisted pinwheel flakey pastry on the outside and I got one meat filled and the other spinach. I haven't tried the latter yet, but the ground beef filled one was not saucy at all or fatty. It has some nice spices and a gReat tie-over snack until lunch. read more

I lived in Turkey for a couple of years and was very excited to find a place that sells Pogaca ( A Turkish pastry that usually served for breakfast). As soon as I learned they sell Pogaca here, I decided to go. I tried a few of their fillings and grabbed a couple other sweet pastries. I stopped into Gulluoglu one day last week to pick up some of their baklava, which I always enjoy, but my visit was ruined by the seemingly lovely young lady behind the counter who turned out to be a thief. :( She is the kind of thief who deliberately short-changes you, and if you're not alert, you wind up leaving her a large - $10 in my case - inadvertent, unearned, and undeserved tip. I admit it was on me in part, because I've been careless with money my whole life, and I didn't realize what had happened until I got home and counted my money, but that doesn't excuse her in the least. I called the next day, and in the middle of speaking with a manager (a man), I was cut off, accidentally, I thought, but since they didn't answer the phone for the rest of the night - I tried calling at least 6 times - I must assume that he hung up on me. So delighted to stumble upon this at Brighton Beach. This brought up such sweet memories from the Gulluoglu in Istanbul. However, in both ambiance and quality, I think this location definitely falls short to the mother location in Karakoy. Since I'm comparing this place to the original baklava joint in Istanbul, this is miles apart in quality. I don't think the baklava looked very fresh or was displayed beautifully... and it seems like they may have been sitting out for a while while the Karakoy location had them glistening under display. I ordered the su boregi which brought back great memories (*tears*) and I know they serve kunefe after asking which I would totally get the next time! Takes 15 minutes to prepare. I called the office three times on three different days, the office manager wasn't available and didn't return my calls. I was there for the baklava so I tried the pistachio and the traditional and both were exceptional! Small enough to not feel too guilty for trying multiple. I am living not far away from this cafe, so I go their every now and then not only to sit and enjoy some sweets but also to take some home or work. They provide boxes and you pay by weight. Their baklava is always fresh and gives a perfect combination of nuts and honey ( who does not like it). The only problem for me is that sometimes this place is in need of a cleaning person. Why is it every time I order my Turkish coffee the way I like it, the ladies behind the counter make it exactly how they want? Here's the play by play... Walk up to counter. Lady smiles, "Yes?" I say that I want a Turkish coffee with 3 sugars and milk. Eyes bulging out of her head she replies, "3 sugars???" Yes, 3 sugars. She proceeds by saying that it's too much for the small cup. I say to put it in the "American" sized small. I am thinking, what it the big deal woman. It's just sugar. It will melt. Then she tells me only a little milk will fit. I tell her I like it on the milkier side, so just put a little more milk to water. "Okay, I put a little milk." Ummm...fine. What she said. The coffee arrives, with literally a drop of milk. I still thank her and she just shakes her head at me, like a parent whose child has asked them to pick out all the peas from their bowl of rice. Takes ten minutes to cool down and for the grounds to settle. Finally I can drink it and while quite good, it is not the way I like it. A sharp contrast is the Gulluoglu in Astoria, where I order my Turkish as above and I get a smile without questions save for "to stay or to go." There's nothing wrong with 3 sugars and a little milk my Eurasian friends. Get it together and fix your facial expressions!!! read more

Gulluoglu is a place that doesn't disappoint. I've been to the manhattan location and both places have amazing food. The ayvalik sandwich is big and delicious compare to the ayvalik toast in manhattan. The chocolate baklava is a must when coming to gulluoglu. I highly recommend this place if you're into Turkish brunch and dessert. The place is spacious and good to come to brunch with your special one or friends. The customer service is good expect a wait on the food, but it's worth the wait. Also the place is close by Brighton beach. The price on the food is cheap compare to other places. read more

When Dan B.'s parents came to visit from Texas, they made a trip to Clifton, NJ to get baklava for us. They had worked in Turkey for 12 years, so they know good baklava. It was the best baklava I had ever had. When Dan convinced me to walk here from Coney Island, I wasn't sure if it could possibly compare. It was better. Honey-soaked, flaky phyllo layers, ground pistachios - and wait, is that goat cheese? Dan looked at me with confusion because apparently cream doesn't go in it and he didn't know what I was talking about, but there was a rich, creamy, tangy flavor permeating the baklava that strongly reminded me of goat cheese. Perhaps they used goat butter (is that a thing?) to meld the crust. Or perhaps that's just my senses overloading on the rich intensity that was this unassuming little baklava. Our favorite baklava is pistachio, so we didn't bother getting walnut, chestnut or sour cherry (but you have that option!) We made the silly mistake of getting both the pistachio baklava ($1) and the double pistachio baklava ($2). I thought the double pistachio baklava meant twice as much pistachio, but it really is just ... twice the size. Whoops. They must've thought we were so silly! I don't know very much about Turkish cuisine, but the other desserts looked delectable, as did the Turkish bagels (slender braids of bread in a circle) and the pagocas (pronounced "pa-wa-jas"). The ambiance is great - elegant and comfortable (albeit in a pretty small space). I can totally imagine sitting here over baklava and tea and conversing for hours, though it is a bit out of the way and there is the beach a few minutes away ... :x In the future, I will definitely recommend Gulluoglu for baklava. And whenever I'm in the area (Taci's Beyti, or if I've walked sufficiently east at Coney), I'll definitely drop by. The Zagat sign mentioned a location in Astoria, so you might be able to get some delicious baklava there, too! read more
