He gave a very fair offer and was patient as I checked out some gear in his shop (which is full of beautiful guitars!). I just picked up my Marin that I had on consignment at Guitar Pickers for over a year. When I got there I looked at the guitar and noticed it was EXTREMELY dehydrated. I also felt the fret ends and found that they were very sharp. The owner kept saying the he has 2 humidifiers going in the 40's. If that's true he should have them checked because I don't think they're working. After I got home I did a full inspection on the guitar and found a crack on the top going from the bottom of the bridge all the way down to the bottom where the soundboard meets the bottom of the guitar. Also, it is so dehydrated that the soundboard has sunken in. For that to happen the guitar had to have been exposed to extremely dry conditions for a long time. I am now left with a guitar that I will have to pay to have the fret ends filed so it's playable again. Also, I'm not sure if there's any other damage that has been done. I will have a luthier do a full inspection and fix whatever he finds. I wouldn't doubt there's a brace that's loose as well. DO NOT EVER LEAVE A GUITAR WITH GUITAR PICKERS! They have proven they could care less about people's musical instruments. I do not recommend doing business with these people in any way. There are plenty of other shops you can buy a guitar from. I have also bought a couple through him. He is fair, honest and a great guy. He probably finds me a pain in the ass, but i like hanging out there when bringing something in just to talk. After their long song and dance, they weren't looking to buy my guitar, they wanted to take my guitar on consignment Second, Third, Fourth impression- worse The community says they often respond to classified ads using various names- Al, Linda etc. Offering to help sell, and making various claims. Time-wasters I experienced this multiple times then solved by sending their emails to spam. I rate this shop Bb...go in there and your wallet will B flat. They are nice enough but a bit on the stuffy side. The guitar maintenance is higher than normal due to location and unless you're looking for a holy grail it is not your place. An instrument closer to my price points didn't have the action or maker I was interested in but very rarely do you see a blue SG. Your bargain is not here. The setup could be more affordable. I recently took one of my favorite amps in because it died and they brought it back to life. This is a mid 70's Fender tube amp and they were very professional. Took them a couple days. Well, something else started acting funny with the amp and I was lazy but finally took it back like a month later--they said no charge--they missed a bad capacitor. Been playing my old Bronco amp, sounding better than ever. Beyond the amp repair shop, they have a wide selection of quality guitars and amps and a friendly staff and environment. Purchased a 1996 'MIM Fender Stratocaster' from Al a year and a half ago. Went to resell the guitar to upgrade and found out that it is actually a Squire body that someone put a Mexican neck on. False advertising. I would advise to stay away. read more

I've driven by this place many times and thought of my dad who lives out of state. Well he was in town and I decided to take him over there to get some guitar strings and I must say the guy who was there acted like a complete jerk. My dad asked for certain size strings and the guy acted like my dad was stupid. He really made me feel uncomfortable. I walked in one day after driving by this place everyday on the way home from work....big mistake. I went in to see if they sold guitar pedals. The owner (I assume) and a couple of other people were sitting in main display room on what seemed to be lawn chairs. I walked up to them, because none of them acknowledged me and I asked if they sold guitar pedals. The owner (I assume) looked me over and said in the most condescending way... "Not too many......". I stood there waiting for about 10 awkward seconds for him to offer to show me the "not too many" pedals they did sell. It never happened. I walked out. I can honestly say, I have never been treated that way....ever. I will keep ordering from Sweetwater. Pretty sad that an online dealer provides MUCH better customer service than a local business. read more

The worst part about my multiple experiences at this place is the way I'm treated by the owner, Al Lieberman. He's very cocky and acts like his $%!T doesn't stink. But let me tell you, it sure does. What an absolute disappointment. Because I'm sick of Guitar Center and live close to Guitar Pickers, I visited their website, which touts the services of a "Master Luthier," read some reviews, and thought I would contact them. They didn't respond to the email I sent them via their site, so I texted them and inquired about getting several upgrades to my Squier Affinity Strat. This is the response I received in all its functionally illiterate, scarcely civil, glory: "I don't usually take in Suire products. Your guy will be Brendan down at the Musib Store. Thx." I then asked if they might work on my Ibanez RG and was told the following: "No Floyd's, Locking nuts." How is it possible that a "Master Luthier" can't handle a Floyd Rose? Needless to say, I won't be setting foot in Guitar Pickers and won't send a dime of my money their way. read more

I can't remember how may instruments I've put on consignment or traded with them. The prices are fair and the instruments are always in good condition. I was not impressed in the least with Guitar Pickers located in Scottsdale, AZ. From my first step in the door as the owner barked a flat "What do you need?", I regretted the tedious search it took to even find the place with its lack of signage or indication that it even existed outside of a Google search. I let the owner know I wanted to see what kind of trade value I'd get for my instrument, he gave a slight sigh and then pointed me to a table to un-case it. After reviewing the model/make he went to his desk and researched online for what he could offer. Upon his return he informed me my instrument was valued anywhere from $800-$1000 but that since he was trying to run a business he could offer me $250 in trade or less to sell it to him. To be frank I understood his reasoning, I mean the guy needs to make as much money as possible off folks and I'm sure more than one person has let him swindle them out of a nice instrument. I politely declined his offer and left. Beyond my poor experience with this shop, the pricing for the inventory was exorbitant with used instruments at or near retail and higher end and vintage guitars priced with plenty of fat on top. I wouldn't call this much of a guitar shop as it is an homage to the owners ego. I came to Guitar Pickers expecting a mom & pop style atmosphere where I could get a fair deal and create a long lasting relationship with a local business, instead I found a small version of Guitar Center. On a positive note I ended up trading my instrument elsewhere for a Gibson Blueshawk which this shop had listed for $999.00.. read more

I took my 1988 J45 Gibson in for some minor work, which was done promptly and reasonably I thought. While waiting for the luthier, Sherlin Gerhart, I browsed the selection of acoustic guitars. I wasn't really a serious buyer, but did ask to play a Taylor 814ce. The owner took it down and it played and sounded OK but I wasn't thrilled. He pointed out the major repairs that had been done to the instrument which was priced a few hundred under new retail. Honest, but expensive I thought. Running a small business is tough, with fragile instruments all over the place and all kinds of folks wanting to test drive, whether they have $$ to buy or not, and he has to pay the rent. So I thought the place was pricey, but I'm glad he's in business. This wonderful shop is my first step and favorite place to shop on the region. They care! They protect their instruments and I am always assured that my purchase is going to be perfect. This is a family business and is a Phoenix jewel. They are not a Guitar Center type store. They love their guitars so that their customers will love their purchased guitars. This place is comfortable and beautiful. I have had top notch care. Al knows his stuff. Sherlyn is a luthier genius Sam their dog even sings along to nice acoustic melodies! Give this place a try. Their stock changes fast. Always something in there that I have read about but never seen. Although these instruments are vintage, you can count on Sherlyn and Al's eyes making sure they are correct. I've had nothing but great experiences with Al and the luthier on site so I'm super surprised to see those two or three negative reviews.. those opinions should most definitely be taken with a grain of salt. I'm on the move to leave town and one thing I didn't have is a guitar bag for my SG Special. I start looking all over town and I realize that bags are really expensive. I went on Yelp and found Guitar Pickers, which was walking distance from my house. I went in and the gentlemen that greeted me was kind, he immediately had an affordable bag. I have never had such a bad experience in my life with a guitar store. I know the guitars are vintage and all, but I'm careful and I don't need the owner taking one from the lower rack for me. I'm not 2 years old. This place is no Guitar Center. When I asked to play an EPIPHONE and try to plug into an amp, the guy questioned whether I was a serious buyer or not. I just gave the guitar back and walked out. How do you expect to do business when you have a rack full of guitars you virtually cannot play? If you want to get a feel for a guitar that you may want to buy in the future, steer clear of here. Unbelievable. read more

I recently consigned three fairly high-end guitars (Gibson Custom, Fender & Taylor) -- all lefties -- with Al at Guitar Pickers. The entire experience, from first walking in the door, through the sale of my third guitar was outstanding. I first went there several months ago, just to look around and get a feel for it before actually consigning any instruments. From the time I walked in for the first time, I felt welcome. The environment is comfortable, no pressure to sell or buy anything, just friendly, informative and enjoyable conversation about guitars as well as admiring some of the beautiful instruments hanging on the wall. After chatting with Al and getting a better sense of him, I decided to consign two guitars to test the consignment waters. I brought them in, a Custom Les Paul and a '56 Fender Strat reissue. I went through the valuation process with Al and I thought the asking prices he suggested were very fair and reasonable. I departed with consignment forms in hand and a good feeling, knowing that my instruments were in good hands. The next contact I had from Al was a phone call letting me know he sold the Les Paul and that he had a check for me. The process couldn't have been easier. I know from past experience that left-handed guitars aren't the easiest to sell, but he did it! I then consigned a beautiful Taylor 12-string, also a lefty. Same process -- comfortable, friendly, easy. Bottom line, Al sold all three of my guitars, I'm very happy with the prices received, and I look forward to working with Al again in the future. read more

WOW.. are you kidding me? You're going to get pee pee hurt because the guy wants to take a guitar off the wall for you? Go to Guitar Center, kid... I went looking for an acoustic.. I have played for years and want something nice, for a fair price, that hasn't been pawed by every single 19 year old in the valley.. the owner was very attentive and offered several selections based on my communicated needs. yes, he took them off the wall for me. I'm still adjusting to life, but I think that I will get through it. Like another gentleman stated, I too was blessed with another patron who wished to display his prowess on the Crankmeister 5000.. and like the other gentleman, I was offered a private room to actually hear the guitar that I was interested in.. very nice touch, especially in a facility so small.. I'll go back, if they have something that I like.. I will negotiate a fair price, that's kind of how things work.. try that at Guitar Center.. read more

I was in town for one day staying at a hotel a mile away. I called to see if the store was open (Thanksgiving eve) and Al answered the phone and invited me down. When I arrived, Al greeted me warmly and invited me to look around. I told him I was just visiting and not a serious customer. It didn't phase him at all. He did ask that I let him get down and replace any guitars I wanted to play. I picked out three very nice Guild guitars and Al happily let me play them all. He even let me use a quiet side room to play an acoustic as there was another customer cranking on a Strat and amp with distortion. I don't understand any of the negative reviews here. Going into his store and telling him I was just there to kill time, Al still was a nice guy and very easy to talk to and interesting as well. I guess for the guy who got all twisted up because he couldn't get down his own guitar; these are very nice, vintage instruments and expensive. This business is NOT a pawn shop. GROW UP. read more

i bought a Snark Tuner from this store a while back and when I took it out of the box I noticed that one of the plastic pieces was ready to break so I decided to return it. The store is by my wife's work so she returned it for me. The owner was a complete jerk to my wife and refused to return the product. He then took the tuner out of the box and started putting the battery in and broke the tuner worse. Then and only then after breaking the tuner did he give my wife a refund. Brought my NEW guitar in for a set-up by the on site wannabe "luthier" and man did they set me up alright. Had Sherlin install a new up-graded bridge which he installed backwards and stripped out every single intonation screw head while scratching the new chrome tail piece. Also installed a new bone nut but didn't bother to shape it or cut the string slots properly, horrible. Doesn't listen to you because he thinks he is the "EXPERT". Sherlin is a complete hack & don't buy into his expertise... pathetic workmanship!! Took 3 weeks to get my guitar back and when I went to pick it up he is nowhere to be found. He rarely is there and he does not answer his phone, voice mail is full so can't leave a message, he requests you send him a text. Took my guitar to a real luthier (who was very familiar with Sherlins skills or lack of) who confirmed the shoddy work done by Sherlin and to repair everything Sherlin destroyed, which was all done right in front of me for a total time of 30 minutes! Never bring your guitar to guitar pickers, plenty of Truly skilled luthiers in the valley who will take care of your guitar needs quickly. Al & Sherlin are a couple knuckle head stooges who work together like carnival workers. Way over priced guitars and most of the guitars have issues if you have a trained eye. EVERYTHING IS SOLD AS IS , NO RETURNS & he has Sherlin to back him up, it is a perfect scam on the un-knowing. You would be well advised to avoid this snake pit. read more

I don't know about spamming craigslist, but I contest the pricing information in some of these reviews. I was recently shopping for a used martin, I was impressed with their guitars, and sorry I didn't buy a really nice 2008 HD28V listed for $2,5o0 but offered for $2,250, which is hardly overpriced - that's a great deal.. yet it even had an incredible setup job from their luthier. I am glad I've gone to the store and checked out their selection - they are the anti-dote to today's music retail giants. As for the prices on the wall, I think if you talk to them on the guitars they're negotiable, but if you went in there with your head up your backside I can see how they could push you out the door pretty quick.
