We hired Geri and his team to implement our plan for a double bathroom remodel. Both baths were stripped to the studs, non-load-bearing walls moved, windows resized, and all-new everything installed. This included replacing a cast-iron tub with another cast-iron tub, adding an electrical subpanel, replacing stucco, moving an attic vent fan, a copper repipe, and the usual tile, fixtures, vanities, etc. Geri's team did an excellent job, and our bathrooms turned out as close to perfect as anyone could reasonably expect. The work was done on time (plus extensions for unforeseeable delays, namely discovering the need for the repipe), and Geri's guys were dedicated and showed up on time and stayed late every single day of the project. Geri himself checked in regularly - every other day on average - and asked us constantly if we needed anything. He was very responsive to calls and texts, and always followed through on his promises. We chose Geri over two other bids largely because Geri was the only one enthusiastic about accommodating our request to do the bathrooms in sequence so that we could stay in the house. As Geri says, often, "it's no problem!" Some other positives: Geri personally handled all of the permitting process, including scheduling and attending all inspections. Having dealt with San Jose permitting before, I can say this is a very valuable service. The team was very cleanliness-minded: They covered every non-work area to prevent dust from migrating, covered their traffic areas with taped-down paper, and cleaned up all debris, even sweeping nightly before leaving. A few considerations (not criticism!) to keep in mind: The foreman and craftsmen on our project were all great, hard-working, and skilled, but as the customer you need to make sure your desires are known to Geri and/or the team. Don't just assume they can read your mind. Geri required us to purchase our own finish materials before the project start date, which is fairly standard and was part of our contract, explained clearly up-front. He provided assistance with choosing sizes, quantities, etc., and pointed us to places to get good deals, but be prepared for a lot of leg-work! We just got ADU done with Geri and the team. They did a phenomenal job and also felt very efficient. They clean basura as and when the work kept finishing. They also made sure our washer and dryer was available throughout the construction as it was in Garage which got converted to ADU. This was a big thing for us too. We really liked his workers also Chilo and Santiago. Very sweet and hardworking people. Geri did find ways to save money wherever possible . Also suggestion related to width of peninsula was very helpful. Also he is very detail oriented. He worked with City inspectors and all of inspections passed. As usual any work needed to be done, make sure it's in the contract. Like any other contractors, there will be extra charges for the work not in the contract. REMODEL: Geri and his team remodeled 3 bathrooms in my house. He and his team were accommodating to my wants and preferences. The pricing was reasonable too especially for the final product I ended up with. He gives you a scope of work that details exactly what the project includes. He also knows all the good places in the Bay Area to shop for supplies. NO MORE GROUT! YAY!: I have a dislike for grout because it's hard to clean and in my opinion not sanitary. I had grout on the flooring tile I've been wanting to get rid of. Geri recommended flooring without grout that's easy to clean and walls in my showers without grout too, which makes me soooo happy not to ever need to clean grout ever again! He even saved me money in labor because the shower walls and floors were way less labor time rather than placing tiles one by one. CLEAN: His team lays down tarp on the floors in the home to make sure they don't ruin your carpets. They were also careful to wear masks the entire time they were working for COVID safety. OVERALL: I recommend Geri and his team. He is responsive promptly with phone calls and or text. Summer of 2024 we wanted to add a bedroom and a bathroom to our house and contracted the work to "GS Design and Build", who quoted a reasonable price and fast build schedule that suited our budget and time. We were provided with professional design of new addition from a competent architect and GS design handled all liaison with the city for necessary permit. Even when we asked a change in plan to include relocation of an existing bathroom GS handled the plan revision with the architect and arranged for a speedy approval from the City to adhere to the original build schedule. During signing of contract, GS provided proof of insurance, licensing and a clear payment schedule for each stage of the project upon successful completion of and passing city inspection. Geri, the owner of GS is gifted with excellent time management skills ordering services like dump trucks during excavation / demolition or arranging cement mixers during foundation work just in time with immaculate accuracy with minimum disturbance to our daily life and of our neighbors'. GS has a workforce who followed excellent work ethics, arrived on time, maintained schedule and kept the work site tidy with minimal intrusion in the existing section of the house where we could live peacefully without vacating for the entire length of the project. We could see the fast progression of the project and so did the neighbors who appreciated the speed at which it was getting done and enquired about who the Builder was. Usually I don't write reviews this long - but as these are usually not small decisions, I figured a longer review couldn't hurt! The short - highly recommend! Introduction & Background When looking for a contractor in a high demand market it is hard to find someone with integrity, that is affordable, and will complete the job on time and on budget. Fortunately, GS Design was all of this and more. We found GS Design and Build (Geri) on nextdoor. One of the neighbors posted Geri's contact information, so we gave him a call and oh boy were we glad that we did. We briefly explained what we were looking to do for our project and Geri stopped by the next day to take a look and provide us with an estimate. Geri's attention to detail and pride in his business were apparent from the first meeting. He asked several clarifying questions to make sure he understood what we wanted and all our questions were answered quickly by someone who clearly knows the business and what to watch out for. This was particularly important for us, as managing expectations is a key part of the process so everyone is on the same page. The turnaround time on the quote was prompt and detailed. Geri also gave us the opportunity to view an in-process project that was using similar materials to the ones we selected and even got to meet a member of the team that would be working on our house. This was a very nice touch and helped in our decision-making process since we could see the quality of the work. We spoke with several other potential contractors throughout our search and GS Design was clearly the best choice. Scope of Work We used GS Design and Build to update a standard size full bathroom (no plumbing/electric movement) and to transform a half bath into a full bath, moving plumbing/electric, redoing floors, adding baseboards, and adding in both a closet and a new pantry where the old bathroom used to be. We also added a ceiling to our basement with full insulation. We had received a quote from another contractor that was also recommended on nextdoor which didn't even come close to Geri's in terms of price and understanding of what we wanted to do. Geri's quote included all raw materials and the vinyl flooring we were putting in. Our agreement was to purchase all fixtures, which was great, because we could choose exactly what we wanted and price shop for the best deal. Before buying the shower base we confirmed that those items would fit/ were the right size, etc. Geri helped with pick up of large items like closet doors, and his team helped unload heavy items like stone slabs for the shower and store them until they were ready for use. Preparation & Project Execution Geri asked when we wanted to start, and we gave a date, thinking it would likely be later due to the high demand. We were pleasantly surprised that Geri was able to accommodate us without any issue. When the date came Geri was ready with his team. Demo was quick and the team cleaned up everything as if it never even happened. This would continue throughout the project and Geri and team were great about cleaning up at the end of each day and making us feel that they both cared and took pride in what they were doing. During demo and construction floors and hallways were covered along with furniture and any other surface areas or walls that were not being touched. This really helped us feel like we had our space back at the end of each day. Every day during the project Geri stopped by in the morning to let us know what was going to be done that day. He also stopped by for a progress check several times a day and came back at the end of the day for a detailed walkthrough where he showed us what was done and what still needed to be completed. He always asked for what we thought - if there was anything else and to let us know if we saw something we did not like/needed touchup. This was huge for us, as it showed our satisfaction with the final result was what mattered. During the project we had a few scope additions, which he priced, and we paid for toward the end. He was very flexible on these changes and was clear about any additional costs, so we knew what to expect. There were no surprises, which was wonderful. Additionally, there was a day where PGE had to shut down the power to our block. Geri was able to accommodate by bringing a generator so his team could keep working. They never missed a beat. I cannot overstate how nice Geri and his team are on a personal level. It never felt like we had strangers in our house. It felt like we had friends stopping by each day. Plus, they seem organized with paperwork and gave me a breakdown of what I was paying for. The contract clearly listed the work to be done. Gershon and his crew remodeled a bathroom and did miscellaneous repair work around the house (dry rot fix, replace door etc.) for us. Gershon listened to our needs, scoped out the work and gave us a reasonable estimate of schedule and cost. He also recommended some stores for us to pick items like floor, shower panels, etc. . His crew always showed up on time, worked hard, kept the place clean with tarps and plastic sheets and cleaned up at the end of each day.Gershon responds promptly to questions via phone or texts, and checks on the work almost on a daily basis. G did a great job remodeling my kitchen. The cabinets were outdated and badly needed replacing. He suggested white shaker cabinets to brighten up the kitchen and make it look bigger. I am very happy with his design. He even helped me choose materials because I sure don't know anything about construction! He and his team were easy to work with. I called on Geri @ GS Design again to do flooring in a bedroom and a bathroom. Turned out the bathroom flooring had many repairs over the years and Rigo had to remove at least 3 layers of wood that had been wet for years (!) and a foot of drywall all around. Also, Rigo went under the house to bring the piping where it should have been. Rigo and Geri repaired the floor and properly, re installed the commode and vanity, Geri went to get the current wall paint matched and today you can't tell there was anything done. The flooring in her bedroom looks awesome and naturally streams into the bathroom. Again, I'm very satisfied with GS Design. For those of you looking to remodel a kitchen, bathroom, deck or?? but may not know exactly what you want or are reluctant to engage an unknown contractor because of previous bad experiences or fears of cost overrides or construction delays: look no further than GS Design and Build. Several years ago I took a leap of faith and contracted with GSDB to strengthen my deck and was very pleased with their work, cost and timeliness. I have subsequently engaged them to do not one, not two, not three, not four, but 5 additional renovations for my residence and rental properties: three kitchens, and two bathrooms. Since I did not use an architect and have minimal interior design talent I especially appreciated the counsel they provided on details of the renovation as well as where to find the appliances, fixtures and tiles needed for the projects. We encountered a few minor unanticipated problems but they were easily resolved without the fearful supplemental costs some of you may have encountered.
