Grumps is perfect... If a clinical level of OCD isn't a problem for you. While cleanliness and 'neat' isn't their thing, they serve some of the best breakfast food in Annapolis. In a strip mall in Eastport, it's easily missed unless you're a local or steered into it. It's crowded on Saturday and packed even more on Sunday, and customer service can wane a bit with so many people - I waited 15 min for a glass of orange juice, and butter & syrup were apparently hard to come by in any usable portion size. That said, the pancakes were perfect, the bacon substantive, the eggs done just as requested, and overall had a great experience. If you're already on Main St and standing in front of Chick & Ruth's, stay there and eat. If for some reason you want to try something different, check out Grumps. read more

Living in Hillsmere, I go to grumps a ton! I've always loved going there but today that changed. I put an order in for pick up and the person on the phone was beyond rude. Then when I went in to pick up the food I was greeted by a frowning face and lots of attitude. I get some people aren't morning people but don't work at a breakfast restaurant if you aren't one!! Really yummy place for breakfast! I came here to meet a friend, and he had already had breakfast so he drank coffee while I ate. I was a little puzzled by the pajamas (did the waitresses sleep there, or was it just super casual Friday?) but as soon as I entered the restaurant is started to make sense. It looks like someone went to their 5 year old granddaughter and asked her to decorate the place. Really interesting decor, very fun. The food was also very good. I had the blueberry pancakes with strawberries on top along with creamed potatoes. The potatoes were interesting, and the blueberry pancakes were delicious! It wasn't the season for strawberries, but they were still a nice addition. We had a very friendly waitress who brought us our food. We stayed for a while, and enjoyed their outdoor seating. Last time I went, I took a British friend looking for a genuine American breakfast experience. She's a daring gal and tried the Chicken Fried Steak, fried eggs and grits. My friend and I went here for lunch yesterday! It was great. I had the French toast with a side of potatoes. The potatoes were so yummy and seasoned very well! Inside the place itself was so different to me. I enjoyed all the wall decor and the confetti like paint on the floor. I loved it. They issue a mini rubber bear to identify our table number. Interesting Place. Stopped in for a burger. Didn't know anything about the place so I thought I'd give it a whirl. It is fairly small inside and very loud dispute the fact it wasn't crowded. I was a little turned off by the staff wearing pajamas, looks sloppy and unprofessional not too mention a little gross. I did enjoy my guacamole burger. Much to my surprise it was made with a real fresh mashed up avocado not the premade green goo some places use and it had a beautiful and delicious home grown ripe tomato. Very good. Came here for the on a busy Monday around 11am. The method of ordering seems really backwards to me. You speak with the host at the front who gives you a numbered rubber ducky and as many menus as you request. The number is the table that they set for your party while you wait in line to order. It's awkward to deal with a diner sized menu while other people are trying to cut through the line to get their drinks. Speaking of drinks, the coffee was terrible. Not much more flavor than hot water. The creamer was empty every time I went back up for a refill. I brought this to an employees attention who grunted in response. We ordered three kids and two adult breakfasts. After 35 minutes our plates came out. Everything was luke warm, and they forgot a few sides. For $4.99 the kids meals came with one medium sized pancake and a sad piece of bacon. The servers who brought our food were wandering around the restaurant for a few minutes with our plates before they found our table, then they weren't able to tell us which plate was which. This is the third time I've been here and it was clearly busier than usual. The issues we encountered here seem to be more of a bad design and careless employees than just being in the weeds. The decor is fun and the owners are friendly, however the food is so-so and the waitstaff are extremely unfriendly. I didn't like Grump's the first time I went there, but I gave it another chance today just in case the last time was an "off" day. Unfortunately, I didn't like the food this time, either!! I ordered banana pancakes (without nuts), grits, and a side of fruit. My husband ordered a Bloody Mary and the daily "special", which was a "red, white and blue waffle" with strawberries, blueberries, and bananas. Our meal came to $35.00... SUPER expensive for what we got. My husband had to check the bill to make sure it was correct. They royally messed up my order and put nuts in the pancakes and didn't bring the fruit. I asked them to please fix the pancakes and do NOT put nuts in them. The second batch came out super fast and the pancakes were RAW inside! We're talking.... wet batter. It was really disgusting. I had one bite and didn't eat any more. The grits were served cold and tasted like the ones you buy from a box. The fruit was the only redeeming part of my breakfast. And the hot chocolate was good, but it cost $3.99. The food is generally overpriced, and just mediocre. Also, I know they're trying to be different and cute with the PJ's, but it's kind of gross. Some of the wait staff wear baggy, saggy, stained PJ pants. Not really what you want to look at while you're eating breakfast. And the seating system is really weird. You have to stand in line in the middle of the restaurant while you wait to order. It gets VERY crowded here on the weekends, and also quite loud. You can barely have a conversation over the shouting. Overall, I only go here because my husband likes it. But, there are many better places in town for breakfast/brunch. I'm a foodie, and breakfast is my favourite meal of the day. This place just doesn't cut it for me. It's a greasy spoon trying to be something more than it is. I have to start with a bit of a rant... To me, 4 or 5 stars generally means a restaurant that makes their dishes from scratch using quality ingredients. Sometimes I'll rate a place 4 or 5 stars for one or two particular items that stand out as exceptional even if their other stuff is lacking (see Ruby Tuesday, Arby's, etc) I don't care if the place is a hole in the wall, a dive or a Michelin rated gem, it is the freshness and quality of the food that wins me over. Grump's is a family owned and run place that has been in business quite awhile now and has been very good for the area. They were the only place open during Hurricane Isabel, not only offering badly needed hot coffee, but letting customers help out in the kitchen to get people fed. They are great people. However, their food is almost completely pre-made, pre-packaged, fast food/Sisco kind of fare. I know that they advertise their slaw as being made there (and it's not bad) and their chili (which is dreadful) but by and large, things come out of a bag, a box, or the freezer. Unlike JR.C, I had the WORST hamburger there I've ever had and never tried another one. Unless they have completely changed since then, it was a frozen, possibly even pre-cooked dried out mess with a chemical aftertaste. A short trip to Eastport will get you better burger at Davis' Pub. There is nothing that I've had over the years that I could rate above 3 stars and a lot I could rate lower. Today we tried the sweet potato fries which came out burned--twice--and I mean inedible. A short trip down the street to Main Ingredient will get you sweet potato fries that are actually good. The salads are expensive and light on ingredients except lettuce. A short trip down the other street will get you a great salad at half the price from Adam's Ribs. I generally don't go for breakfast, but the couple of times I have tried have also not been great--pancakes far inferior to those around the corner at Main Ingredient. Sandwiches are sad with bread that just crumbles apart the minute you touch it. The mayo tastes cheap. (and these babies cost a pretty penny too...) What Grump's is great for is a "quickie" If it is not busy, you can get in and out in a flash, which cannot be said for other restaurants in the area. It is almost as fast as McDonald's and yeah, ok, I suppose it is better than they are. I am rating 3 stars instead of 2 because they are great people who deserve the business from people who are not as picky as I am. I am sorry to be so negative. I wish there was something on the menu that I have tried that I could heartily recommend, but mostly it is just very mediocre food, very convenient. As much as they are loved in the neighborhood it would be a terrible shame to lose them, but then again, for the purpose of this site, I think it is important to be honest. read more

This place was really fun. The staff wears pj's and were super friendly. The guy taking orders was funny and kept up with my bf's sarcasm like a pro. The set up is odd though. You get a toy animal, go to the back of the restaurant to order and then wait for your food. There wasn't a wait but there was about a ten minute line. But it was also a sat or sun morning. It's another Annapolis, make that EASTPORT icon, and you need to have a laid-back attitude and a bit of a sense of humor to enjoy this place. If you want a structured environment and quick, traditional service, there are other places to go. The waitresses here are in t-shirts and pajama bottoms, and most of the patrons just a step above that. You're either down with this or you're not. If not, please don't complain; go find another place. Yeah, you order at the cash register, pay, and then wait. It's casual, cheap, and easy going. Nothing fancy. Me and the wife came for Brunch, nasty day outside and this place was jumping. She got biscuits and gravy with a side of potatoes, I got that bacon and cheddar burger stuffed with more bacon and cheddar. We also got a side of the "grumps wings" which claimed to be big. Welp the wings came out first and not only were they big but most importantly juicy and delicious! Than the rest of our food came. The burger was one of the best hamburgers I've ever had in my life! My wife loves the biscuits and gravy, and the potatoes she said had steak seasoning on them which she loved. This place was super good and I can't wait to come back and try the breakfast. read more

Somewhat chaotic and strange, and not at all what I expected when I picked this place, but the food was surprisingly delicious. The only real disappointment was my son's blueberry muffin. My sister-in-law and I agreed to meet at Quiet Waters Park to have pictures taken of our kids - a holiday gift for my parents, so they could have some nice, professional photos of the grandkids. I looked up restaurants near the park, and found Grumps Cafe. Didn't look at all like I had expected, but we got there before the rush, so we had a good table and after perusing the menu for a bit, we were able to order quickly. We were given breakfast menus so I didn't even realize there were lunch options until I got to the register, but no biggie. I had tried to place my order in a way that made sense for our table (i.e. blueberry muffin and home fries for my toddler, which is what he wanted), but that didn't translate in the register, apparently. Our food came out pretty quickly, but the potatoes were with my sis-in-law's wrap, and I had to remind the server that I had also ordered a blueberry muffin. He seemed somewhat confused, but eventually came back with a muffin wrapped in Saran Wrap that he tossed on the table. Not cool - my sensitive little guy seemed confused that he didn't have a plate, when the rest of us had normal looking breakfasts. Oh well. The potatoes tasted pretty good and my cheesy avocado toast or whatever it was called was actually delicious, so if I find myself in the area again and in need of food, I just might stop in. I would just hope that everyone at my table at least gets a plate, regardless of what they order. read more

Cafe is conveniently located across from Quite Waters Park and a good spot to come to for a post run meal. I got the 3,3,3. 3 eggs, 3 pieces of bacon, and 3 banana nut buckwheat pancakes. The food was good and hit the spot. I do enjoy when the nuts and fruit is inside the pancake out waffle. The bacon crisp and eggs made the way you like. The boyfriend and I splint a biscuit which was good. He had a veggie omelet and 3 pieces of maple sausage. There were no complaints out of him. They have outside seating which was great after a hit sweaty run. The way in which you order and wait in line seems to keep it from being do crowded and make turnover easy for the staff. They should probably consider this system in Jerz or Philly. I give this place a 3.5 starts the good was good and hit the spot.
