Get out of your food comfort zone folks and get into Grüit! No more funky food mishaps, ok the service needs a little help but that part is always a work in progress, but I digress. Chef Erick, formerly of Boru Boru and other high Michelin star rated spots, is the executive chef here now and doing what he does best to make this gastropub a huge success. Dishes you'll be familiar with but with a slight twist in a good way is the name of the game here. The vibe is upbeat, staff is friendly and the food is on point. This night we had the caramelized medjool dates with chunks of crispy beef bacon, pickled red onions with a drizzle of aioli that but thru the sweet and have it a nice balance. Their signature burger is ultra juicy bf flavorful, even if you must get it well done ;), the Duck pastrami was really tender and had all the flavors of what a traditional pastrami would have. Their charcuterie board was phenomenal and chef said he'd be updating it from time to time with new additions as well. And I'm physical obsessed with their pickled veggies jar!! Loved their olive oil cake served with an in season persimmon and kumquat coulis, almost like a short cake and the sweet and tart of the fruit coulis complimented really well. So get your GNO, BNO, birthday, date night, family celebration going here! It's a fun night out with great food, beautiful ambiance and upgrade energy! Oh and they will hold your table 20 min past your reservation time, DO NOT BE LATER THAN THAT because there is a ton of walk ins and they will give your table up to one of the many hungry patrons waiting. I was excited to give Gruit a try, but after waiting over 20 minutes without being able to flag anyone down to take our initial order, we got up and left. It wasn't that busy and we did see several other groups nearby get sat and attended to, so not sure why we were ignored. So I can't comment on the food or drinks, but for the prices on the menu ($31 burger), the service was completely unacceptable. read more

Found respite here on a cold winter night, a little too late to be out without something in our bellies. A little on the pricey side, but impossible to whine about the value when the quality of the cocktails and fries were this good. We had a $9 side of fries. They're shoestring with crunch and texture - a dusting of flour before being diving in the frier? The toothy texture and crispy fries carried the mayo and ketchup. I appreciated the cilantro garnish. Altogether these golden rays were just what we were looking for in the final hour of service on a cold night, rejuvenating is before facing the cold dark night again. The coolest new place in Brooklyn - 25 minute walk from 770 so it is on the outskirts of Crown Heights, but still close enough. The decor inside is a modern/trendy diner feel with a retro bar in the middle - it is super cool! The atmosphere is very interesting- considering the location and that Gruit has a bar. It attracts all people - not just Jews which I personally love. The food of course is German cuisine which I feel like they really stick to the theme by having flights of beer and items such as, pretzels for what they call it "bites." They even take it a step further by having authentic dishes like breaded chicken wienerschnitzel and spaetzle on the menu as well! I personally RECOMMEND the pretzel (it is a beer garden - you can not come here without trying a beer and pretzel!), fried chicken wings confit - sooo delicious, crispy french fries - the truffle mayo sells the entire "bite", and the chocolate mousse cake for dessert. The service was amazing as well. The waiters and waitresses constantly checked on our table and were always pouring us water - it is really hard to remember the last time I had such great service even when the restaurant got busy! The runners who were giving us the food (goyim) even knew to tell us that the pretzel was ha-motzi. This always shows me the true service of a place. The prices were in my opinion, so reasonable - especially for kosher! I feel like you would pay the same amount at a non-kosher establishment. I can not wait to go back and try Gruit again. To be straightforward- Gruit is fun, and gruit is different. It's a beer garden but they've also got an indoor seating area that sort of resembles a diner. They have an incredibly friendly staff, and they have one of the most unique menus I've seen in a very long time. All of the food is kosher, which means that the chefs had to get a little bit creative with some of the items on the menu- for example "crab cakes" made of pan fried corn and fennel relish, or wienerschnitzel made with beef bacon. Some of the food came off as a bit odd, while some of the food- the beef bacon stuffed medjool dates in particular- were an absolute hit. On top of the food, they've got a pretty wide selection of drinks. I got a pitcher of beer for $28, which is a pretty standard price. They also offer flights for beer tasting, wines, and a variety of other drinks If you're looking for a fun place to hang, especially outside, Gruit is a great place to be. read more

Got food here on a weekday with two friends in the summer. The bar staff made a friendly effort to strike up a conversation, like a friendly neighborhood bartender which was appreciated. The interior of the bar is very modern diner. Pretty chic and it has a good atmosphere. We were the only ones in the place except for maybe one person at the bar, so it had a pretty empty, silent feeling. Drinks were decent. I had a blueberry cocktail concoction which you could tell was carefully crafted, but a bit on the pungent side. Unfortunately, a couple of the drink specials were not ready or available to drink. They did however, have a good drinks special at the time. The food, however, was pretty bad. I had the Kasha Varnishkes, (a noodle dish with mushrooms), but something was not write with it. Too much oil, the mushrooms were cooked for too long so it had oversaturated, slimy taste and the mushrooms also tasted a bit old. Bleh. For the price I paid, I was really disappointed and the whole atmosphere actually ended up depressing me. My friend didn't end up liking their entrees either and we're equally as disappointed. I ended up having to go to another restaurant after this to clean my palate and eat something fulfilling. Granted this was a while ago now, so hoping their food has improved. read more

Came here because of a Woman named Levana Kirschenbaum whom is my Rabbi's mother and organizes dinners for groups to different kosher restaurants. Needless to say, she is a food connoisseur. Now to my review. This place is awesome! We had so many appetizers that was shared with all. One was better than the other. The food is world class in my opinion. The entree came and I was stuffed. All I can remember is that the schnitzel was great and so was the fish and chips. I would says I'm more well "rounded" than most whom regarding the wide variety of eateries than most whom will read this review so "believe me" I know. This is the place for every kosher foodie to try at least once. You will be back! Unfortunately, my family & I had a terrible experience at Gruit. I was a big of Gruit originally, and we have a lot of family members in town for a wedding, so I booked an outdoor reservation for dinner. My mom called the restaurant shortly before to confirm, and all was set. However, once we got to the restaurant, they told us they had booked an event, and there was no longer outdoor seating available. We had 3 different Ubers on the way, relatives coming from all over, and I had to tell them 1 by 1 that dinner wasnt going to work. The Gruit manager blamed it on the system. I understand it may have been the systems fault, but then maybe they should switch systems... If the system doesnt have the ability to tell the restaurant when someone books an outdoor meal, seems rather obvious to me that they should use another system... In our 10 minute there, we say the same exact thing happen to another group. We keep strictly Kosher, and are always looking to support Kosher places. This was an extremely disappointing and unprofessional look, and unfortunately, there is no chance we'd ever go back. The host was rather rude to me when we complained, told me to calm down, even though I was perfectly calm. Having never been to a Kosher restaurant, nor having tasted Jewish cuisine, I must say, Gruit is a delicious and wonderful experience that I recommend everyone must try! From the delightful hostess, to the yummy drinks the bartender made, to the cute atmosphere and decor, the politeness and knowledge from the servers and the kindness and hospitality from the manager, Menacem, there was absolutely nothing wrong! After being welcomed and sat from the hostess, the server waited on me promptly and gave me some recommendations. After sitting there awhile, the manager came over and asked if I was enjoying my evening and if I needed any help with the menu. After talking some and hearing some more house favorites, I went with some items he had mentioned. I could not believe how delectable and flavorful the BLT, General TSO Cauliflower, Creamed Corn Dumplings and Beef Fried Rice were! It is definitely a cute little spot for a cosy evening with friends or family with great drinks, food and people! If you have not been to Gruit, it is a true injustice! read more

It's a good things that they made the ambiance into a diner because this is truly the kind of food you get, albeit overpriced... The menu consists of deep Fried everything except for the steaks. We ordered the everything bagel chicken fingers which were standard, the Kilbasah which looked like it was deep fried and wasn't great, the spicy fried chicken which was just poppers over a corn scramble, and the fries which were good. I felt the restaurants value to be very below what you are getting. My beer glass looked like a pint went on a diet, the bill at the end was $103 for some fast food. They add a mandatory 18% tip which is a bit much considering the service is subpar (only got water refilled once in an hour). I would not recommend this place since a more reasonably priced fast food menu exists in other places. read more

I only have good things to say about Grüit. The food was incredible, the atmosphere indoors and out was lovely, and the service was great. Outdoor seating is very nice at night; there are string lights and the ambiance is delightful. The menu has a wide variety of very interesting and enticing foods, so you better eat lightly before you come because you'll definitely want to order a lot! It's really hard to choose what to order! We ordered the everything bagel spiced chicken tenders with truffle mayo for the table, which was delicious, my company ordered the beef brisket, the beef bacon fried rice with a fried egg, and the badger flame beet dish, all of which I tasted and wanted to put my fork back in for seconds. I ordered the signature burger (pictured below) well done and it was exquisite. All in all, I had a great experience at Grüit and will definitely be coming back. read more

I had been to Gruit kosher resteraunt in the summer because loved idea of outdoor bar resteraunt, as its so rare in kosher world. Unfortunately , it was a bad experience, will leave at that. Our friends told us last week to give it another try as it has been revamped. Wow, it has been definitely reworked. The staff was attentive, smiling and prompt. I went in asking for the Korn Flake Chicken but I was told they changed it to something else similar. It tasted fine. My major issue was the service. It took over ten minutes before someone even acknowledged us sitting down there waiting for water at least. I asked for a coffee and was told, "we don't even have coffee here." Besides the fact that it was an unprofessional way to say they didn't have something, I could literally see a coffee machine from where I was sitting. Someone from our party ordered a beer and the waitress spilled some on the counter. Then throughout service about four to five different staff people kept asking us if we were okay. Atmosphere is key to making any establishment successful. Gruit's interior (as it rained on our visit and we weren't able to visit the garden) was cozy and yet bustling with activity. It gave you a real sense of belonging even if you felt out of your element in such a place. As for the food, the flavors of some items trumped others; the burger and dates were phenomenal, while the schnitzel left me wanting more flavor. The main downside was the price; for the neighborhood, such high prices cannot draw much attention, though they seem to have a regular group that comes in from other parts of Brooklyn. read more

Was smart enough, made a reservation so we barely had to wait. Once seated we ordered a few apps... The chicken fingers were rubbery, had a snap to them, and tasted extra chickeny if you know what I mean. The Beef Bacon Medjool Dates were served piping Cold in a mini cast Iron pan. I stuck my fingers in the bottom of the pan and asked a waiter if they were supposed to be served cold and he actually said "YES" lol!! Did the same thing with another waiter and she finally got the point. She brought us another order of the dates which were warmer but still not hot. The chili was good and the pretzel was OK (microwaved?). I couldn't bring myself to try the wings bec they still had mini feathers on them and that makes me wanna gag. Some are OK with the feathers, I'm not(Personal Preference). All 4 of us ordered the burger and were pleasantly surprised, The high point of the evening! The s'mores rugelach was good for desert, but stay away from Sorbet Pops!! Now for the Piece de Résistance! We asked for the bill, it came and we were looking at a bill close to $400 bill for some apps and 4 burgers (fries not included). After scratching my head and making sure we weren't charged for something extra my eyes caught a glimpse of something called a "General Fee" for $52... I told myself that's probably the tip. Usually restaurants don't add a tip for a table of 4 at a casual burger spot. So I was like whatever, it's OK. Went up to ask the waitress if the "General Fee" was the tip to be 100% sure and she said "Yes, and for the entire crew!" I said to myself the entire crew? Wtf? We split the check and I paid with a credit card on purpose. I noticed the waitress hovering over me and our table for the first time the entire night lol. She was waiting to see if my friend would leave her the change from his half and me on the check for mine. Well I def didn't add anything extra, circled the "General Fee,"and told my friend to put his money away! We were given the stink eye as we left... They should mention this practice on the menu!
